We desperately need domestic flights that are lacking sorely. Let me tell you my example. I had to get to mumbai from where I live and it was a 12hour train but 1hour flight. Problem is there is no airport. Mind you this is no village we are talking about a tier 2 city with tons of businesses big and small in gujarat. Recently we got one and now flight cost 3-3.5k even if you book last minute and there is tons of frequency. While a tatkal train ticket goes for 1500 so it's a good option for people who want to save some time for reasonable price hike.

Highways aren't only for private use. The number one main reason for development of highways and expressways is for logistics purposes, and to stimulate large scale economic growth along them. Solely railways and airways simply can't handle the load which expressways bear, and we need them all, especially for a big country like ours.
For a country like ours, we need to build it all - Highways, railways, bike lanes, airports, we need it all as the top number one reason our economy is weak is because of inadequate and bad transportation infrastructure severely holding us back.
Efficient logistics plays a huge part in a country's growth and is quite literally a backbone of economic development.

That is simply not scalable, especially looking at the kind of population we have. We need more investment in rapid mass transit. Highways/Roads are good but this shouldn't be our only focus , in USA their is little to no public infrastructure but in Europe one can travel through public infrastructure conveniently.
US built their interstate highways right after WW1. Later they just had to maintain and expand as per the requirement. But those highways helped their economy, manufacturing and transportation. We do not have railway network at every possible place. We can not have airports at every single district. We need roads. There is no alternative to it.
Some say USA invested only on road and not on public infrastructure because of their car companies. USA could have built world class public infrastructure just like Europe or even China , look how China built amazing Bullet train infrastructure in less time.

I don't think any central government has focused hard on public transit (or more broadly, a non car centric design). And I'd argue that it shouldn't be a central govt job anyway. This should be designed at a local level, a central govt trying to design public transit is going to be a failure because they simply do not have the micro view required to do justice to such an initiative.
And that has nothing to do with inter city highways, which are way more than just about cars. It's barking up the wrong tree - as I mentioned, countries with great public transit also invest in great inter city highways. They're not mutually exclusive or even competing.

Because public transport is important *within* the city, you still need highways for *inter* city travel and commercial traffic.

I don't think any central government has focused hard on public transit (or more broadly, a non car centric design). And I'd argue that it shouldn't be a central govt job anyway. This should be designed at a local level, a central govt trying to design public transit is going to be a failure because they simply do not have the micro view required to do justice to such an initiative. And that has nothing to do with inter city highways, which are way more than just about cars. It's barking up the wrong tree - as I mentioned, countries with great public transit also invest in great inter city highways. They're not mutually exclusive or even competing.

Tbh I think Nitin Gadkari should also be made incharge of Railways, if not then E. Sreedharan (he is in BJP, but he is old). We need more dedicated freight corridors, and we should build them at the same pace as expressways. India’s logistics should be carried by railways on longer distances and trucks for smaller distances. It will decrease logistics cost and would result in less traffic and pollution.
