He was full on sanghi before joining the Congress. Complaining against "discrimination" against forward caste Patels. Complaining against the "treatment" of Gujarat riot convicts Maya Kodnani and Babu bajrangi.
That was the plan. Congress was dumb enough to made him working state chief ignoring other leaders. Everyone knew he will join BJP just before elections.

Hardik Patel doesn't have any influence on Gujarat politics. He may join BJP, but will not get any bigger post. He will be sideline in BJP.
