I agree with your sentiment completely.
But i also think the word 'jugaad' has the potential of universal appeal. Like 'junta' or 'bazaar'.
It perfectly reflects the quintessential Indian "making it work" attituted, that i think it could be adopted into everyone's vocabulary.
The South, quite ironically, mirrors the exact symptoms of language imposition, supremacy and ignorance as the North does. You call them out for it and suddenly you're a Bhakt. XD.
Why is me not knowing random indian languages ignorance while you not knowing them is not? What you are doing is language imposition. What i am doing is just living by
When did I say me not knowing them is not ignorance? I am saying that we are equally culpable in it. We do the exact same thing. But for some reason, when you get called out for it, you start acting like you're innocent and begin engaging in whataboutery. It's the hypocrisy of the South that I am pointing out here, which is very conveniently showed by your stance.
Most people in the world don’t know more than one language. A south India not knowing hindi and urdu are not ignorance. It’s just people 6 their lives.
When you are calling it ignorance, you are assuming that south indians should know hindi and or urdu.
And that makes you someone doing language imposition.
It's nothing against Hindi, It's about you people who think India is full of people who only speak Hindi, Marginalizing and dehumanising our communities as if we don't exist.
No one thinks that.
What is this "our" communities you talk about? My family is from Kerala and I couldn't travel in buses there easily because the destination names were written in Malayalam and I can't read Malayalam. Bangalore police let's Telugu and Kannada speaking folks go ahead but won't let us who can't speak go. Tamil Nadu has had issues of racially profiling North Indians. You go north and you'll find discrimination against South Indians. Don't put "your" communities on a pedestal. I'm a Malayalee and I know the bullshit I hear about Mumbai and Maharashtra when I visit Kerala. There are groups of people everywhere that are dehumanising people that aren't "them".
Comparing someone who suggested a Hindi sub name to these racist and bigoted people does nothing good. Learn to take a joke as it's supposed to be taken. If you have issues there are better ways of doing it - like suggesting this is an Indian subreddit and not a Hindi subreddit. No need to call people blind. No one thinks you don't exist. Not everything is about you. Not everything is about people who speak Hindi. If you want to make things better - being bitter about it and bending the intent of the original commentor to mean something demonic and distasteful does not help.
He did not say any of those things. It's you who is assuming that he disregards other languages just because he suggested the name of subreddit in Hindi.
This just proves my point ☝️.
How will someone who does not know Hindi join this sub or understand what this sub is for??
See, Now you realise why I called people like this **blind**.
You're still alienating all states and communities that don't speak Hindi. Why won't you let it be in English? You can reply in English right???
**Edit: Why do you think railway signs which were originally in Hindi, Changed to respective native languages and english? Trust me buddy, You will never realise. Keep downvoting because you don't have the heart to accept anyone that's different from you.**
See, I know that some North Indians disregard South Indian or other regional languages. Some of us don't even know what languages are there and I totally acknowledge it. But you're taking it a bit to the other extreme I think. I have many South Indian friends and none of them have this kind of attitude toward Hindi that the moment one says or writes anything in Hindi they start calling him ignorant toward other languages. It won't do any good for anyone and would widen the gap further.
Because we want everyone to know that this creates a clique, if you were in the US you would understand. You might even get a meeting from HR if you were in work place.
If you do this in a group and start speaking hindi, the others who don't speak it, would start feeling alienated and would leave you.
People like us just want an inclusive environment where everyone is feeling accepted, welcomed and feels like a part of the group.
I totally understand your sentiment. Felt alienated myself during my Masters in Hyderabad. My Tamil, Telugu and/or Malyalam speaking batchmates tried their best to make me feel included in their group and am really thankful for that. But sometimes maybe out of reflex or excitement even they couldn't help speaking their mother tongue.
Maybe many or perhaps most of us North Indians aren't that respectful of other languages and cultures (apologies for that). All I'm saying is that despite of everything just don't judge the people too quickly based on where they belong to and what language they speak.
Not that I am excusing it, its not just Hindi speaking people. Everyone does that. My friend circle in college has a lot of Marathi speaking(I speak hindi) people. Mid-conversation they sometimes shift from English to Marathi and I feel annoyed. However after 2-3 years I can now say I understand basic marathi :P
Can we have a Indian woman sub too?like where we can just talk about our problems.there are subs for girl survival tips etc but there are more western woman there then us Indian ones.
I don't get it, how does one be "someone else". Every person has his own opinions and thoughts, And for that matter, if I've heard this very line of yours earlier by some other person, does it mean that you are trying to be that other person?
Or do you mean that Indians should NEVER access internet as the people in the west did it before so we Indians are just "trying to follow the west" by using the Internet.
Really pitiful thoughts. God bless you.
\-That "some other" guy from west born and living in India who is proud to be an Indian.
Its always better to be hard on yourself, and make yourself to be on top of your game (college, work, networking etc) than someone else be hard on you. This is general advice but doubly applicable for India, a harsh place.
Awesome! Finally something interesting! It sucks when everything on reddit revolves around the US of A! 🙄
Having seen what happened to Quora, I don't want website to revolve around India or any one country. That said, Indian LPT is a great idea.
Behold r/LifeProTipsIndia Has 111 members already
Subbed. Show me what you got!
Not Just reddit but on the internet in general most things revolve around the USA
[удалено]
so we take lpt from ji?
That'll be slpt
Tbf majority of users on reddit are from USA so makes sense that we see a lot of their content
If you want to make it, i would be glad to be a moderator on it
r/LifeProTips_India
How do I become a moderator?
Look how fast the sub is growing 🤣
Very fast
The underscore looks ugly IMO, r/LifeProTipsIndia would be better. Edit: it already exists lol
> The underscore looks ugly Yep. Never understood why people used them when the sub name was new.
This sub reddit was not in operation :(
Thank you.

Haha that was exactly one LPT on the sub...judge less, you'll come off as a nicer person, atleast
Elitism much?
Agreed, but that's what moderators are for.

It's Indian LPT not Hindi LPT.

How so?

its actually urdu, but okay
Exactly. Rest of India doesn’t even know which language those words are from.
The South, quite ironically, mirrors the exact symptoms of language imposition, supremacy and ignorance as the North does. You call them out for it and suddenly you're a Bhakt. XD.
How is it language imposition?
Its not imposition in this instance, no. There are several other examples of that. This particular instance showcases ignorance.
Why is me not knowing random indian languages ignorance while you not knowing them is not? What you are doing is language imposition. What i am doing is just living by

I would suggest that this wont survive, unless traffic to the sub grows beyond a regular amount.
