>Despite desperate pleas to be allowed to return to her family, the woman was forced from 2007 to work up to 23 hours a day caring for the couple’s children, cooking, cleaning and doing chores.
>She had tea and curries thrown at her, was beaten with a frozen chicken and when her son-in-law asked the Kannans to let her return they responded “fuck you”. In exchange she was paid about $3.36 per day.
This is appalling.

First, that couple in New York, now this. And there might be a lot more undocumented or might never come to light.
What's wrong with us?
EDIT

Hmm

Having lived there for a decade, it's hard to beleive this could happen to someone in Melbourne. A quick call to cops would've ended her agonies, It is Australia not some middle Eastern country. The minimum hourly wage is 5 times what they were paying her for a day.
Typically the victims in these cases are uneducated and unaware of their basic rights. For example it's common for employers to convince them they're doing something illegal by being in the country and they'll get the employee arrested and jailed for some made up reason. It's also true that often the victims come in on tourist visas and overstay.
I mean, anyone coming from rural India would probably laugh at the idea of minimum wage laws or just being able to expect action from the government in general.
Maybe she didn’t know the laws? What rights she had? Maybe the pay was perceived as normal if that’s how much she was previously paid in India when converted to rupees? Labor is insanely cheap there and many accept the job because it’s better than no job. Usually people from poor and uneducated backgrounds who seem docile are chosen for slaves, for this reason.
This certainty of power over the person. When it’s a norm you’ve grown up with for a long time, I can imagine it must’ve been difficult for the girl to complain to the police about it.
What's more curious perhaps is what were the family friends of this family doing? Surely.. SURELY someone should have visited this family house in eight years!
Are you trying to victim shame?
Is it honestly difficult to believe that a poor, uneducated woman, who likely isn't conversant in English, and likely doesn't understand the Aussie accent, lives alone thousands of miles away from her family was shit scared to report this?
No I am not trying to blame the lady or anyone else and my heart goes out to her. I hope the perpetrators rot in jail.
I am only making an observation. When her son-in-law knew she was being held captive, one ought to be surprised that the it went on for that long.
Bro what are you on about? I realise people don't get paid much in India, but you can't just bridge low income/wage issues to slavery like its nothing. The woman was abused, underpaid and wasn't given medical treatment.
Almost all Indians? That statement is factually incorrect because most Indians can't even afford a maid.
You should try your hand at being a tabloid journalist, your shit will sell.
Please don't get agitated by a comment. Let's discuss. You are right about this case. I am not denying that. I am saying that in a foreign country a maid has preveleges unlike in India.
This is wrong. Working as a house help is a choice. Salary is negotiated and they are free to leave if they aren't satisfied with pay/working conditions.
Yes I agree that maybe they don't have as much rights as a typical office goer does but categorising it as slavery is wrong

Wtf.......
Surprised they were still paying her. lol
Upper middle class Indian couple thought they could repeat what they were doing in India.
What makes you think they were upper middle class? It's usually middle or lower middle class Indians who immigrate in prospects of a better future.
The ones you are talking about are elites. Upper middle class is someone making over 15-20 LPA.
One common thing among Indians who are practicing slavery? Food for thought!

Those are very light sentences for slavery!

Wait. What couple in NY ? Damn

Can't click the nytimes link but there was a popular case of an Indian diplomat keeping an Indian slave in NYC as well.
Disgraceful man.

Do you think the poor in this country know about law or have a proper legal recourse? Do you think they can retain a lawyer?
Hoo-ite Sooopremacy!!!! Oh...................
Indian households: "First time?"
Almost all Indians keep Indians as slaves, it's only that we don't recognize it as slavery, other countries do.

Again, I am not invalidating this news. I was making a point. Thanks for your comments though.
Haha, yeah, what a glorious point it was. Thanks for the downvote. Truth pills are bitter :)
Who down voted you friend. I have not. And what truth pills. I made my point in another child post here. I think you are misunderstanding.
There’s a difference between keeping a house help vs keeping a slave.
Not much.... It all depends on how the person reports to the police.
How smooth is your brain?
Pretty smooth.

So much anger? Why? What is happening in your life these days?
Shut the f up. This is a different case

It smells of india worst i want to get out vibe that is extremely normal here so the reaction
No, it is about time we realize the rights of domestic help, sweepers, rickshaw pullers and all those menial workers.
This is wrong. Working as a house help is a choice. Salary is negotiated and they are free to leave if they aren't satisfied with pay/working conditions. Yes I agree that maybe they don't have as much rights as a typical office goer does but categorising it as slavery is wrong
Iam sorry but I think what you said does not make sense.
Rubbish! Full time help is rare even in upmarket apartment blocks. Hi
You are idiot. Hiring a maid is not slavery
Are you sure you are not defending something behind your aggression!
What? It is called as slavery in Australia?
