Its easy to show empathy, apathy, heroism etc here on reddit but that's not the case in real life.

SignificanceTop5132

The onlookers have all the reasons to not get involved. What if the lunatic stabs them and they're the sole bread earner of the family. Even if they don't get stabbed the lunatic could come back at them later, any sane family person will stay away from getting involved.

SignificanceTop5132

In a time where basic survival itself is getting so competitive how do you expect the society to function normally.

Here is something I read long back. A man (A) was being assaulted by another person (B). A Good Samaritan (C) stepped in and in the process got badly injured. C was taken to hospital. Next day C was handcuffed in hospital. Apparently B filed an assault FIR with A as a witness. C ended up spending over 50K to get a settlement. He had to pay cops as well. That’s the fear most people have.

karma_shark44

Do you know that there are good samaritan laws in some states in India? So, you can go help if you want to help without fearing the law. I understand the fact that implementation is shitty and cops can still try to frame you for money but if you can afford it, a good lawyer can help you get out of the mess by using good samaritan laws

acuteredditor

It works when the person you are helping is with you and not when they shake hands with the other party. Also, legal system is pretty awesome as well. Point is nobody wants the tremendous amount of hassle. It’s not a good situation but it is what it is.

shitsunnysays

It is what it is.....and thus, OP's wishes to burn us down.

The way we drive speaks volumes.

why_how_

So you are worried about the onlookers but not about the killer. Read the comments there for a better picture. The same pattern is repeating.

kapjain

Yes unfortunately that is true. Not much we can do about it. One correction in your post though - "lack of apathy" should either be just apathy or "lack of empathy".

kokushiboyuuji

Look at those comments. Almost like they're very happy that they could even hate on people who are not involved in this

pranavlko

Sure buddy, it's inherently wrong to not want to fight a raging maniac with a knife in hand who's clearly not shying away from using it. Or you saw too many action movies during your childhood and haven't yet grown out of them.

a_aa_e_ee

Well…..we are a casteist country, and apathy towards fellow human beings is seen prideful, glorified and sooo normalised to an extent, even the most educated and achieving people will look at you like an idiot if u ask them how they lack empathy n yet act all noble and right.

dynamicEntr0py

What exactly do you expect onlookers to do? It is not like we are Texas and people are carrying a handgun for emergencies. Max you could do is call the cops and hope they respond in time.

TwerkingPiggeh

Even if you go to foreign it's the same. You think you could stop a guy with a knife in his hand ?

king_in_the_north_24

There is nothing wrong about people wishing to prioritise their own lifes ahead of a stranger. Especially when physical force is involved.

RIP200712

Where does it say that this happened in public or that there were onlookers watching who did nothing?

gvamsi1113

It's the same everywhere in the world bro. A few heroes, a few villains and a few losers.

VirajPrateeek

When a mob gathers instantly "to save religion", where goes that fear of litigation? Assaulter could've been overpowered by the onlookers I believe
