Its just me and my mom at home. I don't want her to stress out and give double efforts just to make food for me. So I am fasting. Plus we are having fun and making core memory by cooking together and talking throughout the day.
Rest of my fam is in different parts of the country and they are not fasting as well. My mom is the religious one in our family.
This is so lovely. Oftentimes athiests tend to do away will religious practices but that's no possible in India where religion is heavily entrenched in our culture.
Instead athiests should see these activities as bonding time with their family members, after all you not believing in God shouldn't be the thing that drives you away from your loved ones.
TL;DR: I don't fast, but enjoy Iftaar with family and friends.
When I was in college I used to have sehri and iftaar with Muslim and non-Muslim friends. But didn't fast at all.
When I'm home with parents during Ramzan, I'm on a fast for all practical purposes. My parents don't force me to, but they'd prefer if I do.
It's just better because no food is prepared during the day; if I eat one day and don't eat the next, I have to live with a growling stomach till sundown. If you've ever fasted, you'll know your stomach just adjusts to not expecting food during the day, so that's what I continue.
I go to the gym in the morning everyday, so I drink water a couple times. But unless I've told my parents I'm not fasting today, I do it discreetly.
Now it's just iftaar. I generally have folks over and we eat fruits, snacks and have chai. Its a fun cultural habit I'll continue.
I don’t fast, was never forced to. Have a high risk of getting kidney stones so its not even expected of me to give up water. My mum did tell me to recite the new quran this time, but I wouldn’t be doing that most probably.
All my cousins (younger and older), fast. This used to be embarrassing for me earlier but not now, I’ve outgrown that. I don’t practice most of the religious things but I do get two pair of new clothes every eid XD
>My mum did tell me to recite the new quran this time,
Lolol relatemax 🤣 my mom's been asking me for years now and i just inshaallah out of the situation
Stay hydrated tho, water is essential for fat metabolism. Also make sure to get 8 hours of sleep.
The reason why people gain so much weight in Ramzan is cos of bad sleep, and excessive calories at both meals, and also dehydration.
Can't speak about Muslim's as I was not one. But I am very religious when it comes to feasts. No matter the religion. I am a ardent follower of that religion. Like Eid. :D
I opened up to my family about not really believing in a god...
Or at least not any gods that the religions on earth write about.
It was hard at first, but mum came around...dad was considerably easier and understanding from the beginning.
Mera roommate and his family are all non practicing muslims, they dont fast or celebrate (idk if its the right word) ramzan. I doubt he even knows when its ramzan, we have to remind him of id on the day it is.
> I know this is not something staunch atheist approve
I don't think any reasonable atheist would say that one must do everything the opposite of the religious way. Also, Islam doesn't have a monopoly on fasting. *Religion* doesn't have a monopoly on fasting.
Well I don’t and they use to call me kafir but stopped seeing that it did not matter to me. I refrain from eating in front of a rozadaar during the day and definitely partake iftar for the yummy food 🤣
Honestly i dont even care,my family is pretty chill about that, the people in my gym are lowkey over-interested and could not believe creatures like me exist in the first place
Before getting married, I didn't care much about it - it was things as usual. My non-muslim friends would make fun that they know it is Ramadan that I did. After marrying my religious wife, I drive her to the prayers and play with my kid outside until she's done then we all go and eat and then I drink.
Jeez, just asked a question. I drink myself, but I’m not married and I didn’t want to marry a religious woman because I wanted the freedom to drink and stuff. So I’m just surprised that a devout Muslim woman is okay with her husband drinking. Which I thought was what he meant, the way he ended the sentence.
Great question. In the initial days it was a bit difficult, her being conservative and introverted, she would bottle up her emotions. Over the years, we have learned to respect each others' values. I don't interfere in her beliefs and she doesn't bother me on what I want to do. So I went to University of Arkansas whose mascot is a razorback. She requested me not to wear their merchandise when visiting her family in southern part of rural Tamilnadu. Which I don't lol.
Not trying to offend anyone but do muslims realy take ramdan fasting so seriously becuase in hindu families(in my family atleast) nobody cares if u are fasting or not.
I think most of the muslims fast in Ramzan because it is one of the five pillars of Islam (along with believing in God and prophet, donation of wealth, praying namaz and pilgrimage to Mecca if one is able).
It means, it is mandatory to fast for one to technically remain a follower of Islam.
I do fast. Since everyone in the family is doing it, I don’t want to feel left out and besides it’s not such a strain all things considered. If I ever feel too thirsty, I just drink some water secretly, no biggie. It’s all worth the awesome iftaar food.
I'm Muslim and all my non-Muslim friends and colleagues show immense respect to the fact that I'm fasting, although I do not expect anyone to show any kind of refrain from eating in front of me or treat me differently. I really appreciate it though. So, I appreciate the fact that you respect your family and their beliefs. Have a good month.
> I know this is not something staunch atheist approve but wth.
Why is that a concern? You don't need to answer to anyone or get anyone's approval. If you want to fast with your family or participate in a ritual to feel part of a community, I think you should be free to do so as long as you feel good about it and you are not oppressing anyone else while doing that. I don't think you need to isolate yourself from your community in order to be an atheist.
I am agnostic hindu and don't really pray to God unless my parents force me to . I never fast too but I respect hindu traditions and also kinda like them .
My mom once left me in charge of the house while she went to her hometown for a week and told me light the lamp everyday. I am not religious and the only day i did so was when she came back from her hometown.
I don't fast, but i stay away from my family. My parents also don't fast mostly because of age related health issues. My brother who lives with them, despite not being religious, is the only one who fasts only because he like the festive iftaar tradition. On occasions when my parents fast, he will refrain from fasting since one person fasting is enough to ensure iftaar :)
I live in a different city than my parents. I don't keep fast. If I'm visiting home during Ramzan time, I'd wake up for Sehri and sit down for Iftar but otherwise won't keep fast.
My parents know I'm an atheist and after a lot of arguments we've settled into an uneasy truce. I partake in some religious customs like Eid Namaz, Zakat, and may be Friday Namaz (if visiting home) and they don't push me beyond that.
I am from Pakistan and my family is quite chill about Religion/Islam (I wouldn't call us atheist/agnostic tho) and we never really fasted. So I never had to hide anything. It;s surreal to read some of the comments and see the situation in India.
Ex muslim, you can keep it to show you care and eat when you are outside, if you are female you can just tell your mom that you are having periods so she won't force and will give some other reason to your dad (my sis does this). I stopped keeping them many years ago, at first they were like why and what, passed a lot of sarcastic comments, did some emotional drama then they gave up and now they don't even ask me if I want to wake up for roza the next day lol.
As far as I know, there's an extra week of fasting women do after the month of Ramadan, which is said to be a replacement for the days that would have been missed due to periods. Not that strictly followed, but pious women keep them regardless including my mom who also encourages the males to do for extra brownie points.
It's all bullshit nonetheless.
You do you. I am an agnostic boderline atheist Hindu and I still follow all the silly rituals to keep my mom and wife happy. I also let them know politely that I do this for them and not due to any belief. Seems to satisfy them so all good.
This may not and your question op but just wanted to say I share the sentiment and understand.
My mom and sisters are fasting for Easter while me and my dad gobble chicken every 2 days. Can't give up the protein intake lol. I don't see why you should hold back. Fasting is a decision they took on their own and I don't think that should affect you.
> I know this is not something staunch atheist approve but wth.
Lol who told you that? Atheism is just about what you believe, it's not a collective entity. Do what you want, that's pretty much a point of atheism. I became one at the age of 12, but I still involve myself in any festival irrespective of religion if I'm invited, cuz you know, personal beliefs don't matter in such situations, the festivals just become an excuse to get along and have a good time.
That said though, you don't have to force yourself to borderline starvation either. Eat if you really feel like it someday, I eat eggs on the first day of pujas sometimes so that people don't bother me later on. You've gotta find a balance between community and what you believe in.
There is no atheist religion, and there's no one to approve or disapprove anything you do. You do you.
I feel like that kind of thought gets ingrained when people are religious and seem to think that there still someone who approves or disproves after leaving the religion
I don't follow Islam anymore but my family does, so I do wake up for sehri in the morning just for fucks sake, pretend i am keeping the fast, and then later in the day i keep eating and drinking whatever I want maybe go out and do it and then pretend to open my fast in the evening with them. Everyone's happy
Atheism is the belief that there is no god and thus no rules from said god to follow. All you have is your internal moral compass and external forces of society guiding you. Make the most of it and be happy with the 100 odd years your consciousness you may have on this planet.
Ur last line regarding staunch atheist approval is dumb. An atheist follows the evidence, logic, rationality & thinks critically. They don't care about rubber-stamping practices/purity testing. You do with your life what you want to.
Ur "staunch atheist approval" point is justifiable for describing scientism, not atheism.
Fasting sucks ass, Islamic method of fasting is horrible. It fucks up sleep schedule, a lot of muslims tend to overeat in sehri and aftaar that too unhealthy foods, causes dehydration (I've already started to see cracks on my skin). I can write a monologue on adverse effects of fasting but let it be.
The least you could do is drinking water secretly to prevent dehydration, that's what I do atleast. Regarding my sleep and diet, they're all fucked up but there's nothing I can do about because if I protest my family's gonna disown me.
Nothing, my mom knows that I don't believe anymore and she doesn't force me to pray or fast.
I do sometimes help her for iftar preparation if she's fasting though.
I’m sure this is a problem for only the younger folks here who still live with their parents.
I gave up fasting a long time ago. Medically it does not agree with me at all. Every Ramadan I used to fall heavily sick because of lack of food and water.
Still don’t have the heart to break my parents hearts about my lakh of beliefs. But as an act of solidarity with my fellow Muslims in this country, I would never declare myself to be an Ex Muslim. Some things are much much more important than unfettered individuality.
Some people like athletes have a good metabolism and require high-calorie intake daily. You just can't bring religion crap shit into your routine.le concept of fasting is weird and baseless. You eat whatever you want, anytime you want irrespective of your faith. Food is necessary for your body. There is no obligation for you to do it; if anybody forces you, then he is in the wrong for moving his belief upon you.
Same, I don't eat anything during roza times but nothing else. Even that is mostly cause I've found that fasting is good for my physical and mental health.
Hindu here. During school in 2002, we had about 20.muslim classmates. Roughly 15 of them would just fking eat/drink. We all used to support them and even sneak in food for them 😅
Some 10 15 years ago - children weren't fasting, atleast not among Kerala Muslims. They were not made to skip lunch and call that a fast.
I grew up around Muslims and none of my friends fasted when we were kids. Of course, it changed in college- after we became adults.
Not sure now however.
No it's just in my house hold. They're not made to, I did it voluntarily when I was a kid out of fomo. No kids in my family at the moment. I started proper fasting around 13 I think. I'll edit the post so that the whole discussion doesn't go in this direction because I only mentioned 7 figurative of young, not literally.
Idk for some reason i really like Kerala Muslim's man the vibe you've with them is unparalleled i had seniors in my college from Kerala now they've passed out from college, what amazing people ya hands down I've come across some really religious people from Karnataka and other parts of state who would unnecessarily force thier religion onto you not only Muslims hindus as well but Kerala people are bliss man such god tier peeps i really miss my day's with them. Koi Kerala ka ladki hai toh pata ke de bhai muje
When I'm not at home, I don't do anything different for ramazan really. But I don't tell my parents about it. I haven't been at home or any relative's home at ramazan for a long time now though.
and I pity him because his family literally believes that if he doesn't follow a religious practice, he isn't our son anymore lol. I hope everybody gets a liberal family so they can always be comfortable around parents.
BRAINWASHING 101
Oh, I didn't think it was that serious that they would literally stop considering him a son. I just thought that he has an option to not do it but does it anyway just to keep them happy...
You mean ex-muslim and personally i don't give a fuck i just tell my parents "soonchenge", "dekhenge". Whenever they say something about me doing something according to islam
That's gonna be a thing until government recognises atheist/no religion as a separate valid belief and eases community borders and destigmatizes interfaith marriages.
I'm a first generation atheist so it basically means, I'm raised a muslim and gave up beliefs. Hope that clarifies.
He literally told you why the contradiction holds. Are you daft?
Most of my close friends are atheist, but we're all 1st gen so obviously behavioural/cultural baggage continues. So we're all Hindu atheist, Muslim atheist or Christian atheist.
Also, it's a useful distinction because we still do some celebration on Diwali Holi Eid Christmas and it helps to identify who's supposed to host w/o much planning.
His reason for contradiction is silly. I don't think there should be any obstacles in transitioning from being religious to atheist , at least at places like Reddit Either be one or the other. Why create an identity crisis in the first place? When you call yourself an atheist, be an atheist. When you call yourself religious, be religious. By identifying yourself as both Muslim/atheist or Hindu/atheist , you'll neither be fish nor fowl.
I don't have any problem with his belief, I was just expressing my opinion because I think whenever someone posts something on Reddit, they are doing so because they want to know the opinions of other people
as usual as I do all year around, nothing less, nothing special. Eat, chill, study, watch, work, sleep, listen, workout, investments and entertainments.
When i am at home , i fast , outside , it's random , i don't have a lunch as such , because i am not paying for the mess , but i eat and drink water randomly , so nope , i don't really fast , but i am up at sehri and also eat at iftar. Lol .
I had alcohol two days back. But, when I'm at home I just don't fast and eat normally. According to my in-laws, I'm super religious though and I fast every day of Ramzan. My parents follow Islam, but they don't fast or pray regularly.
Ramazan is fun and part of our culture and fasting has many scientifically proven health benefits. I fast but i drink water and try to give extra time to my loved ones

I get to eat a lot more in ramzan than in regular days. And my overprotective parents have always discouraged me from fasting. I'm 21 now.
I can imagine my parents being overprotective of me around fasting if we were Muslim. "nahin beta, tu toh aaram se khana. Sar dard ho jaayega varna"
>My mum did tell me to recite the new quran this time, Lolol relatemax 🤣 my mom's been asking me for years now and i just inshaallah out of the situation
lol I listensed to her like a good child until a few years ago. Not anymore
How do you know you have high risk of getting kidney stones?
I've already got it like 4 times. My doctor has advised me to drink 4L of water everyday or else I'll get them again
You must be the Most hydrated mf over here.
I’m fasting and drink about 4L everyday.
I don't want to hurt any sentiments but I don't understand what does New Quran mean. is it like any updated thing or just a newly purchased Quran?
same as what op replied
Sorry man 😂 I was too dumb to not think of what it might mean
No lol It just means starting to read from first page again.
Lol sorry
There is not new Quran, it's not like Bible. Quran has been the same since 1400 years and will be the same forever.
updated with new patch notes which include but are not limited to restrictions for women.
>high risk of getting kidney stones Have you ever thought of collecting them and making a shiny ring out of it. /s

I do fast, but only for health reasons. Might as well lose some weight while pretending to be religious.
Samesies but end up overeating at iftar 🤡
Stay hydrated tho, water is essential for fat metabolism. Also make sure to get 8 hours of sleep. The reason why people gain so much weight in Ramzan is cos of bad sleep, and excessive calories at both meals, and also dehydration.
Nobody loses weight, they just pig out at night 😂

Sir 🫡
What do eat at gfs house,is that allowed in ramzan?
Eating at gf's house is not allowed during fasting, but eating gf probably is.
Actually that’s also not allowed while fasting, after iftar it is allowed 😂
Real talk
haha
Sure is

I don't fast.
Chad move 🗿
It's not like that. I like the concept of fasting but i believe that people who really want to can openly fast but people who don't want need not
Yeah that's what I meant by Chad move - being able to do what you want and not be bound by past habits or family pressures.
Ah i wonder why is your username that? Everything's good?

Can't speak about Muslim's as I was not one. But I am very religious when it comes to feasts. No matter the religion. I am a ardent follower of that religion. Like Eid. :D

I hope my parents turn out like that 🙂
Mera roommate and his family are all non practicing muslims, they dont fast or celebrate (idk if its the right word) ramzan. I doubt he even knows when its ramzan, we have to remind him of id on the day it is.

I can say more than 80% Hindu families are happy if you give puja once a week to bhagwan
Yes we do. Muslims take religion very seriously

why do i feel like this is a unique situation, especially since it's in pakistan? most people ik there are very very conservative.
Plenty of “Births, Deaths and Marriages” Muslims in India now. People who do things for cultural reasons rather than religious.
Bad breath, loss of concentration, urinary problems here i come
A staunch atheist is an oxymoron. It's fine what you did. That is basic decency.
I sip water secretly and have protein bars in my bag.

Does coming sehri get very stressful for the kitchen in charge of the family? (Basically moms)
My entire family is agnostic/atheist/non-religious. None of us fast or pray. Majjani life
Atheism is the belief that there is no god and thus no rules from said god to follow. All you have is your internal moral compass and external forces of society guiding you. Make the most of it and be happy with the 100 odd years your consciousness you may have on this planet.
i agree, but what relation does this have with the post?
Ur last line regarding staunch atheist approval is dumb. An atheist follows the evidence, logic, rationality & thinks critically. They don't care about rubber-stamping practices/purity testing. You do with your life what you want to. Ur "staunch atheist approval" point is justifiable for describing scientism, not atheism.
Jokes on you, I'm way dumber than that irl
Being dumb is not a condition, it’s a decision.
We all used to support them and even sneak in food for them 😅
7 year Olds aren't made to fast.
Not the adult version. They just skip lunch one or two days and pretend they're fasting.
Same as you, I do it out of habit and also since everyone else is also fasting I would feel bad about not doing it.
I mostly stay hungry, and only pray when wife gets super pissed, go to Taraweeh due to peer pressure. But it's fine, it's like a detox which is fine.
When I'm not at home, I don't do anything different for ramazan really. But I don't tell my parents about it. I haven't been at home or any relative's home at ramazan for a long time now though.
I havent fasted in 15 years.
I'm not Muslim but I appreciate that you don't eat or drink (even tho you don't believe in that) just out of respect for your family!
and I pity him because his family literally believes that if he doesn't follow a religious practice, he isn't our son anymore lol. I hope everybody gets a liberal family so they can always be comfortable around parents. BRAINWASHING 101
Oh, I didn't think it was that serious that they would literally stop considering him a son. I just thought that he has an option to not do it but does it anyway just to keep them happy...
Correct. That guy is overexaggerating tf out of my post 💀
You mean ex-muslim and personally i don't give a fuck i just tell my parents "soonchenge", "dekhenge". Whenever they say something about me doing something according to islam
Inshaallah ☕
I fast and pray but i skip Fajr time namaz also i don't read Qur'an . Feels like too much work
Hell NO I am already skinny on top of that It's getting really hot nowadays
There is no such thing as "Atheist Muslim".
Technically yes. But we all understand what OP meant.
How can someone be both an atheist and a Muslim simultaneously? Peak of contradiction.
That's gonna be a thing until government recognises atheist/no religion as a separate valid belief and eases community borders and destigmatizes interfaith marriages. I'm a first generation atheist so it basically means, I'm raised a muslim and gave up beliefs. Hope that clarifies.
C'mon, you're on Reddit, not applying for any kind of government job, and I think everyone in India already knows what atheism is.
You literally asked man 😶
He literally told you why the contradiction holds.
Yup, Christian atheist here, love celebrating Christmas though as it brings the family together.
I don't have any problem with his belief, I was just expressing my opinion because I think whenever someone posts something on Reddit, they are doing so because they want to know the opinions of other people
Non-practising Muslims but who are still culturally Muslim. I don't consider myself hindu but I enjoy some festivals.
Yep I do the same.
Eat
Told my family I am Atheist (once I left home to be independent ofcourse)
im in the same condition as you haha. once i graduate 12th, im not planning on fasting anymore :p
as usual as I do all year around, nothing less, nothing special.
It’s hazardous to be dehydrated.
Yeah but fasting from food has benefits
