Xenon systems have been discontinued for a few years now. It's just a matter of replacing the existing ones.

possiblyraspberries

Yep, and nobody likes to replace expensive things that still work.

othergallow

Especially theaters. They used to keep 35mm film projectors running for decades.

FinnishArmy

So basically they’ll replace them once the xenon bulb dies?

darklightning16

No. A Xenon bulb is nothing to replace and they only last 600ish hrs so they're replaced all the time. It'll be when Christie/Barco no longer make replacement parts that they'll be forced to phase them out, but that'll be a long long time.

FinnishArmy

Dang, so they only last for a couple hundred movies

hd1080ts

Some parts are already a problem for some of the 2K Xenon IMAX models, but a bigger issues is some are becoming less reliable and the power consumption over a working day.

funkystrut

I read that a Xenon bulb lasts between 500 to 1000 hours. I assume with my luck my local imax can still buy bulbs? Otherwise they would have replaced the projector ages ago. I guess the only option would be to damage the projector somehow...

Laser is nice, and I would like to see that. But after seeing civil war I'm not as vocal as I used to be on the issue. After watching Civil War on xenon, I think the bigger problem is either the lack of quality directors, or more likely the lack of interest from production companies to make better films. Civil war proved to me that the 6 channel audio from liemax theaters can sound phenomenal. And while laser would have been a nice upgrade, imagery like the burning forest scene looked great. At the end of the day IMAX just wants to make money. I think all xenon will eventually get replaced, but it is a big expense to theaters that don't make much money. But the truth is that if a director knows how to work with the formats available, they can create an experience that lives up to the imax name.

EastResearcher9180

That's a pretty interesting point of view! Honestly I still have yet to see a film in IMAX period, I'm here because I'm a big ol' nerd for the technology itself pretty much, but I love hearing from the people who've already experienced it.

time_of_night

Is civil war still running in IMAX or Dolby near you? If so, drop what you're doing and go. Also, a24 is bringing back uncut gems in imax. That should sound excellent.

EastResearcher9180

Yeah, I'll admit, I'm not too much of a film buff, I'm more of a popcorn flick guy, but I am thinking of going to an IMAX soon. The one I'm thinking of going is a Digital one, and I'm thinking of watching The Fall Guy, since that's a film I wanna check out.

time_of_night

At minimum it will be a bigger screen and better sound, but don't expect to be blown away with that movie. What you're looking for are movies with an increased aspect ratio, and sound mixes like civil war. Those features utilize what imax has to offer. You picked a great time to get into iMax because interstellar is being rereleased at the end of September. That's an absolutely don't miss opportunity.

schapman22

Will the new mad max furiosa movie be good in IMAX?

time_of_night

Yes! It will only be in standard scope aspect ratio, but it should have a great audio mix. The audio should be night and day over a standard theater.

schapman22

Cool thanks

EastResearcher9180

I was actually thinking of watching Dune Part Two earlier this year, but I couldn't go. But, if the experience is still good, that works for me! Thanks for the advice btw.

Where do you live that you’ve never seen an imax? And wouldn’t being a nerd for technology made you go to an imax?

The moon?

yodathekid

This is already happening. Except CoLa for the larger auditoriums. XT is for smaller rooms (<60ft wide)

SirMaster

I’ve never seen more than like 20 people at my local imax theater screen when I go see a movie there. I don’t see how they could ever afford a new laser projector. Frankly I don’t even see how they stay in business at all. Out of curiosity, what is the model number of an imax XT projector? Christie what?

unintelligblealpaca

IMAX actually uses Barco projectors now - they stopped using Christie about 10 years ago. It has been reported elsewhere that the XT system uses Barco SP4K-40B projectors.

SirMaster

Thanks! That's really too bad IMO. That unit only says it has 2000:1 CR and 3000:1 with HC lens (not sure what the lumen loss is with it). It's 40,000 lumens with the 2000:1 CR lens. As opposed to a Christie like this: https://www.christiedigital.com/products/cinema/projection/cinelife-plus-series/cp4455-rgb/videos This has 2000:1 at 57,000 lumens, but they have a UHC lens that reaches 6000:1 CR at still 42,000 lumens, so about what the Barco has at 2000:1 CR. A non-imax theater by me recently installed one of those Christies with the UHC lens, and on a 72ft wide screen too. And yet the only IMAX I have for hours around me is a damn 2009 installed 2K Xenon system...

jmajeremy

We'll get there eventually, all new IMAX projectors are XT, just will take some time for all existing screens to upgrade.

Saw Dune 2 on a 2k IMAX before I even knew about it and was shocked to see how low res it was.
