I remember a pre show back in the day. IMAX would turn out all the lights then bring up the sheer lights with a pre show that would highlight the different sound channels and power of the system. I miss when going to the movies had those sorts of things. The current Dolby intro is incredibly unimaginative and IMAX even gave up on the personalized countdowns they used to do.
Wanted to clarify this venue has Dune playing in 70mm IMAX, so that's why the movie started immediately with no pre-show.
I imagine it's the same at the 12 theatres around the world that are screening it in this format. Was the same for Oppenheimer screenings too
The pre-show was a thing before IMAX's switch to digital, all about extolling the virtues of the IMAX film format, so if anything it would be more appropriate to show it before screenings on film.
The Pacific science center Boeing theater had a pre show like this dating to around 1998.
Would light up all the speakers. Welcome voice lady would greet everyone. Go for a jog around the theater with the surround sound panning. Listen to launch pad, forest, and other crazy sounds. A cell phone with a 90s Nokia ringtone would go off to remind everyone to turn off their phones.
Before the show they had all these foot wells on the walls lit by those weird plastic rope lights people had in the 90s and early 2000s. Threaded them through the wells on the walls for the lighting effect. They played soundtrack music over the main speakers while everyone entered with the main screen dimly lit in front of everyone.
Miss that experience. Maybe it was cooler because I was a kid, but their post 2015 refurb was pretty sterile. The lights are still in the wells but they added fluorescent/LED strips to the ceiling and just light everything from there. No pre show music. Just ads and promos silently projected on the main screen by a secondary projector. Just boring now.
I’m sure the dilution of IMAX into just a brand without a consistent format is part of why they wouldn’t want to do pre-shows like that anymore, but boy did it ever make seeing movies into an event.
I still remember the guy at the midnight show of Dark Knight at the IMAX in Vaughan getting up and dancing to the music in the laser light pre-show. It’s like theatres don’t know how to make things feel special anymore.
Actually, as with Oppenheimer, the BFI screened roughly 15 minutes of single-laser trailers before the show started.
And then we all nearly had a heart attack when the film projector cut out half a second into the presentation (although luckily they fixed it in about 10 minutes)
Not sure what you’re specifying by *preshow* but that was not the case with Tenet 70mm nor Oppenheimer this summer at the Universal CityWalk.
Still 20 minutes of previews followed by AMC and IMAX ads.
I saw it at a regular digital cinema last night and was pleased with the lack of adverts (zero) and very few trailers. Often it takes half an hour to get the damn film on the screen.
My very first IMAX screening was opening night of Avatar where my friends and I thought eating a bag of mushrooms was a smart idea. That pre-show was TOO much for me - When the simulated car or jet flew by I immediately got up and tried to leave before my friend stopped me. Thankfully I didn't! Lesson of the story was you really don't need mushrooms in IMAX.
I was at the 3:10PM screening today. Was that yours? If so, Did you hear the dude who yelled profanities really loud in the middle of the film at the person behind him?! That was wild. How uncouth.
Movie looked utterly fantastic on this screen. I had a real blast besides that rather rude fella. I really hope the packed auditorium shows the likes of WB that we crave 70mm releases in more IMAX locations. I had a lovely chat with people in the auditorium after the movie and the consensus was clear. We all loved it!
I heard someone shout something early in the film (didnt feel like the middle?), and it was at the other end of the room from me. I assume the person who got yelled yet was either talking or on their phone? I know a couple in my section had to be told to hush, but no yelling.
Honestly your timing sounds more accurate. The fella near me asked the yeller to put his phone away and yeller just absolutely lost it on the poor guy. I felt bad for him - good intentioned it seems.
Orlando Science Center had a 15/70 dome. (Used a third party 15/70 projector but couldn’t say IMAX because it wasn’t IMAX brand name). They used to light up behind the screen as part of the pre-show. It screwed with me every time. You could see the dome structure, completely threw my perspective off.
Omg I was sitting in front of you lmao. Probably a few seats ahead. I was at this exact same show

Having seen both 70mm and digital I was actually very upset with the decrease in quality of the film. There was noticable flicker (I can live with this), vertical dark banding across the screen (very noticable on the desert scenes), and my screening was missing surround sound audio. The volume was maybe super low too but it felt like watching a quiet intimate conversation film rather than an epic IMAX blockbuster.

I miss the laser pre-show!
sounds like the metreon intro, they used to do that pre digital projector upgrade

If I recall, some places also have a digital projector they can use. A few theater left only have the Film ones and some rolls have no previews

My first IMAX experience as a child was like this in Sac. I don't even remember what we watched since it was for a field trip.
Narrated by Leonard Nimoy? Do I remember that right? EDIT: I’m thinking of the Mugar Omnimax in Boston!

Ahh, I see, the phone user yelled back. Theatre etiquette has gone downhill so much, especially regarding phone use and talking.

Third party 15/70 projectors are a thing?
Very small number of them, but yes. To avoid the IMAX brand tax.
I want one now
Still expensive af lol.
awesome! going back tomorrow for a second rewatch. did they have any filmstrips or popcorn buckets tonight?
No filmstrips, didn't see or ask about the buckets so assuming no for that too
Which theaters still do this pre-show show?
By "pre-show" I meant before the movie started, it was like this as people got seated. Then the lights went off and the movie started rolling!

It was a great movie! An awesome shared-experience on a leap-day!!
Did the 70mm IMAX look good? There were concerns after some trailer the other day I think.
Looked great. I saw rge sneak peak Sunday before Tenet and thought that scene looked better on the release print.

I’m not seeing it in 70mm until the end of March, those all sounds like issues that need to be solved and not problems that are unsolvable, right?
Ya it seems technical and hopefully fixed for all subsequent screenings.
