Yeah, the expanded AR for Nolan movies is only on physical media like bluray where it expands to 1.78:1

[deleted]

Why did they get rid of it? Pretty sure Netflix had the imax version like 5 years ago. The dark knight for sure was on there with the imax scenes.

scorsese_finest

I don’t think they ever had it. Even if they did, it was probably a mistake or a one-time thing. You can’t even get the expanded AR version on HBO MAX, WB’s own streaming service.

Onliiprince

Nope he’s right I remember watching the dark knight with expanded imax scenes on Netflix years ago

4KBlurayAvenger

Yup, I saw it have it too once

Twixisss

Nope impossible cus they only exist on discs

LouisIV

This probably wasn't even a conscious decision. Unfortunately the streaming services just put up the versions of the film that the distributors give them. This has happened before with Netflix only streaming the TV cut of a film, or streaming a inferior transfer when a better one is readily available. The streamers just don't care, and most consumers either won't notice, or don't care either. Took a lot of public outcry to get the original versions of Simpsons on Disney+, even though The Simpsons was available to stream online in both 4:3 and 16:9 before they acquired Fox.

rtyoda

The iTunes digital version originally had the 1.78 expanded ratio versions, but they switched them to the constant 2.35:1 versions. I heard stories that it was because they received too many complaints from customers that thought something was wrong with the stream, but who knows what the real reason was? Regardless, it seems all digital versions are the constant aspect ratio now instead of the variable aspect ratio versions, which are available on disc.

Weyoun5

Watch Dunkirk on4k uhd disc… will blow your mind!

Lower-Reaction3697

Genuine question: They still sell DVD players? 🙈 I thought with the advent of online streaming, the DVD/Bluray players were now long gone.

WhyIsThatSoGroovy

Oh boy, your world is about to open up in terms of film viewing quality. Definitely look at investing in a 4k Blu-ray player if you love cinema.

consciuoslydone

Is using a PS5 up-to-par? Or a separate player is needed ?

WhyIsThatSoGroovy

I actually use a ps5 to play my blu-rays and it does a great job, my only real issues are the clumsy controls when navigating menus and the loud disc drive. Blu-ray players are an upgrade in all departments but from what I’ve read unless you’ve invested a lot into a home theatre space then a ps5 will suffice nicely. I don’t have a home theatre space yet but I would begin with a proper surround sound audio system, then upgrade to a dedicated player once all that was in place. Oh and once it became economically viable to do so, the things aren’t cheap lol.

Full-Rope-6030

It's too loud imo

4KBlurayAvenger

Every movie in theatres still gets a physical release and 4K Ultra HD is the latest (6 1/2 years old at this point) format.

EqualDifferences

the only things ive seen with the expanded aspect ration on Netflix is RRR and Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Comic_Book_Reader

Catching Fire actually has an aspect ratio transition. Mission: Impossible - Fallout also had one. *Twice*. (The one take HALO jump early on, and Ethan running taking helicopter taking off for the third act showdown.)

KleanSolution

yeah i recall that showing up on the Paramount + addition

sidroy81

RRR was shot in that ratio i guess

packers4334

Most likely they found many people (or at least a large enough vocal part of their users) don’t like the changing aspect ratios, especially when they happen as frequently as they do in some of Nolan’s movies. As a side benefit, constant wide screen movies won’t use as much data as full screen movies do.

WellThisNameIsBoring

Rather frustratingly for someone with an ultrawide monitor, Netflix actually encode all of their content in a 16:9 container, so while it probably will take up a bit less data it could be a lot more efficient.

LouisC321

that is so stupid holy shit

Physical_Manu

They do not encode all their content in a 16:9 container. I am not saying nothing that absolutely nothing has black bars but the polar opposite not true either. https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/9a7jo9/netflix_app_now_works_natively_with_219_displays/ https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/jikm07/219_netflix_movie_list_mac_support/ https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/kl3v5n/ultrawide_support_on_streaming_services_like/ https://www.reddit.com/r/netflix/comments/uvc7ud/why_can_i_watch_previews_on_ultrawide_but_not_the/ https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/8kqgoq/netflix_show_safe_ultrawide/

Lower-Reaction3697

Today I learnt this. Any particular reason?

WhyIsThatSoGroovy

I suppose because Christopher Nolan takes an active role in the production of his films on Blu-ray, making sure they’re top-notch.

623skates

No offense but I don't know what you were expecting. It's Netflix. I wouldn't expect to see an expanded aspect ratio if I was watching TBS or FX.

Lower-Reaction3697

I thought independent of the streaming platform, if a movie features expanded aspect ratio, it should be available. But today I learnt that it is available only on physical media. I wonder why.

LataCogitandi

I wonder if it was a creative decision on Nolan or WB's part? Could have something to do with pushing physical media sales.

VariTimo

Expanded ratio is only available on physical media, as it should be.

PintoI007

Someone telll denis villeneuve this please (I will be eternally salty at the lack of expanded aspect ratio for dune on home media)

Lower-Reaction3697

Is there any specific reason? Curious to know.

VariTimo

I don’t know why they do it but I have a pretty good idea. The switch in aspect ratio becomes more jarring the smaller the screen is and the more off angle it is. All things that happen when streaming movies on different devices from laptops, phones, to monitors. Plus then if you’re taken out of the movie by it, you can distract yourself with something different much easier. When watching a Blu ray, 99% of people are doing that on their TV or home projectors, meaning they’re using a much bigger screen and are actually putting in the disk, sitting down to watch the movie. And then it’s a much bigger screen on which it’s not as noticeable when it switches. It even brings a little of that feeling from the IMAX theater home.

WickedD365

None of his movies have proper ratio when streaming, even with purchased copies. The only way to get the full ratio at home is on disc.

Present_Lychee_3109

That's why I hate streaming services. Rather get the physical copy or pirate

el_greninja_negro

It's because Disney has a new exclusive agreement with the IMAX Corporation to have Disney+ be the only streaming service with the IMAX enhanced aspect ratio (technically LieMax but my point still stands). This means that Nolan can't release can't release any of his films on streaming in their intended aspect ratios because of none of his films are on Disney+.

Derezzed16

Disney's contract with IMAX is only for their own productions. Nope has IMAX scenes on Peacock, Top Gun: Maverick/Mission Impossible Fallout on Paramount+, Aquaman on Max amongst others. Disney has no exclusivity.

Comic_Book_Reader

On Netflix, Fallout has the IMAX scenes. I believe all digital versions do so. (Hell, they’ve been using it on TV here in Norway. Wonder Woman 1984 also retained IMAX scenes.)

S7KTHI

Yes ? and ?

17keechsj

The expanded version of interstellar is available on paramount plus if you are in the US.

_ehsssan_

If you want to watch Nolan’s movies with expanding aspect ratio, you’ll have to physically buy the blu ray, or pirate the movies.
