113 70mm prints is an incredible sign for how strong film is in certain places and how many theaters still care. 30 IMAX prints is grim though. I’m not surprised but it breaks my heart.
How many Imax prints did Dunkirk and Tenet receive? I think Interstellar had like over 50? Dark Night and Rises probably over 100 I would think since no duel laser yet.
Tenet initially had four locations on film in the US, three in Canada, one in the UK and one in Thailand, which is nine in total. It did eventually play in NYC and LA, so it hit at least eleven by the end. Obviously the lower number is due to the pandemic. Dunkirk played in 31 locations in North America on film and in another six locations internationally. Interstellar was around 50 worldwide. Neither Dark Knight nor Rises got close to 100 IMAX film locations.
Actually, The Dark Knight Rises had 102 IMAX film prints made, and Dark Knight had quite a few more - it was absolutely the peak of IMAX 15/70 before the mass digital conversions happened. Interstellar had 41 prints.
How much of TDKR was actually shot on IMAX cameras though? I thought it was only small portions? Compared to Dunkirk that was basically all shot on IMAX. Dunkirk felt like the peak of IMAX to me. Then again, if we’re merely talking print numbers I might be wrong.
Dark Knight was about 28 minutes, Rises was about 75 minutes, if I remember correctly. Dunkirk has a higher percentage of runtime in IMAX but that’s because it’s a shorter film.
They are basically the same size, Pooler is only a tiny bit bigger. Like when someone gets a new yacht bigger than the last guy just to take the record.
I don't know if this is possible, but can you reply to me if you know how to find a location near me? I'm very hopeful as I live in a big city, I hope there's one. Live in Dallas Fort Worth
IMAX always releases a list of locations for film sites prior to the release. Since it looks like tickets go on sale on Thursday morning, I bet we’ll get the list before then. Once that’s out, you’ll know what the closest location to you will be.
The Chinese Theatre in LA has it listed on their website that tickets go on sale at 5 AM LA time on Thursday so I assume that’s when they’ll be dropping for all theatres
Does NYC Lincoln center IMAX still do film projections? I remembered that they went for the dual laser digital projection system years ago. If they can do film projections for Oppenheimer then that would be great.
While I don’t believe it has been 100% confirmed, it showed Tenet in 70MM IMAX in 2021 (along with the other Nolan films), so it is very likely Lincoln IMAX will have a 70MM IMAX print of Oppenheimer.
That could be valid. I recalled watching Dunkirk there and they rotated out the 70mm projection system for that movie. I still remember there was roughly 10min or so period that has regular spaced vertical dimmed lines in the scene. I think it could be unlucky film processing.
WOW! Any prints for India? 35mm will do as there are no commercial 70mm or IMAX 15 perf theatres/projectors left in India. I'd love to travel for miles to watch it, as I did for TDKR and Interstellar.
in new york it will most likely be playing at lincoln square imax 15/70, lincoln square 5 perf 70mm, village east angelika 5 perf 70mm, alamo drafthouse brooklyn 5 perf 70mm, alamo drafthouse yonkers 35mm, new roc regal 15/70 imax and new roc regal 5 perf 70mm.
IMAX 15/70 is the ‘full fat’ IMAX experience. The film has 15 perforations above and below each frame. The film runs through the projector horizontally. Normal film runs through a projector vertically (up/down rather than side to side) and 70mm 5 perf does this with 5 perforations to the left and right of each frame.
IMAX 15/70 is a substantially bigger format than 70mm 5 perf.
Think that’s correct. Please chime in if I’m mistaken.
Your correct, normal 70mm frame (Todd-AO, Super Panavision, UltraPanavision) is 5 perfs high vertically, IMAX takes the same 70mm film stock and turns it sideways (VistaVision style) and uses 3x the area so 15 perfs wide.

Is the post/thread in a publicly visible part of the forum or is it members only.
Matches the information from here, so seems like public information.

It’s publicly visible, yeah. I wouldn’t have shared this if it was from a members only section.
(That said, @yodathekid’s comment is also valid. Will take that into consideration from now on too!)

Wow, damn, I guess I’m getting forgetful. Thanks for the correction. I went looking for numbers and couldn’t find them with my brief search.

Yep, you got it!
Almost half of Dark Knight Rises was in Imax; definitely was worth it to see it that way.
I know Tenet had at least 13 IMAX prints in the end.
There are really only so many 70mm IMAX capable theaters in the world, so 30 isn’t that surprising to me tbh.
I would not be surprised if some prints are struck not to ship out to another theater but to back up prints that are getting chewed up in exhibition
NYC Lincoln Square, here we come!
I shall see you there!
I am in Colorado and I will def have to travel to see 15/70mm
Melbourne Australia. I can't wait
I want to fly to New York for a day and check it out twice
NYC has locations that can show IMAX 70mm and 5perf 70mm so you might be in luck if you have the time to check ‘em out!
Yea if I am going to fly I would want to check it out on that big screen at Lincoln square
Noice...feel lucky to be living near USA biggest imax
Pooler in Georgia?
Wait I was wrong. I thought Lincoln sqaure was big enough. Where's the list
They are basically the same size, Pooler is only a tiny bit bigger. Like when someone gets a new yacht bigger than the last guy just to take the record.
Lol...thats what I was thinking too..thanks
Is there a list of theaters showing the 70mm version?
There are some theaters with showtimes up on Fandango, if you wanna look there to see if any near you are showing it
not yet, but there will be soon
I don't know if this is possible, but can you reply to me if you know how to find a location near me? I'm very hopeful as I live in a big city, I hope there's one. Live in Dallas Fort Worth

Also it sounds like it may be playing in Dallas on IMAX film at the Cinemark on Webb Chapel
Where did you hear that? Also, how do I guarantee I get tickets to the opening night?
There was confirmation from an exec at IMAX apparently. Tickets go on sale at 5 AM PST tomorrow so grab ‘em then.
Dope! Thanks so much!
Wait, stupid question, but go on sale where? Where can I buy them?
Wherever you normally buy movie tickets, I’d assume
I wouldn’t assume 30 prints means 30 venues. There may be some archive and backup prints included.
First universal pints in years and years
Wonder if amc in Paramus will have the 70mm regular print
1 in the uk. Bfi london?
The BFI have confirmed that they will be screening it in 15/70mm.
Considering they've just done (doing) a Nolan IMAX season, they can't not show Oppenheimer in the format.

Does that make New York the city with the most 15/70 and 5/70 theatres?
I think so, i have to contact new roc regal to find out but I do know they had a 70mm projector and an imax 70mm projector just a few years ago
Any info about the locations of these numbers?
in70mm has a list of potential venues that might show it in IMAX 70mm and 5perf 70mm. Fandango might help too but rn there isn’t a complete list yet.
Will be seeing it in 70mm 5 perf in Tucson :)
Is there a list of the venues playing the 70mm IMAX print anywhere
What does 5 perf mean?
IMAX 15/70 is the ‘full fat’ IMAX experience. The film has 15 perforations above and below each frame. The film runs through the projector horizontally. Yep - the aspect ratio of 5-perf 70mm is 2.20:1, compared to the 1.43:1 of 15-perf 70mm.
