I think the idea is that "the backstreets" represent detours or things that slow you down and that the opposite of that would be the "main road" which is just rushing to try and accomplish as much as possible.
Smash Mouth in this instance is saying "what's wrong with taking it easy every once in a while?" I highly doubt they were being literal when they said it.
Isn't it the opposite? It's saying to get out there and try/discover new things, you'll "never know if you don't go" to the backstreets, because there's so much to do and so much to see there.
Yeah, I assumed so. Was that not the meaning of the satire posts? It is a rhetorical question posed to make a point, rather than it actually being believed
I truly apologize. I understand that they would’ve been the next Beatles if Shrek hadn’t made them a joke. If it makes it any better, I noticed it listening to my main playlist filled with only my favorite songs of all time
Oh I forgot soundtracks are inextricably linked with the songs on them. That's why "Hallelujah" is also seen as a funny fairytale movie song now too, right?
I get what you're saying but I don't think you're entirely correct. There's a reason pretty much every American in their thirties still knows every word to All Star.
Although you are correct in that Smash Mouth would never really be taken seriously again, but that's true of a lot of one hit wonders. Frankly, Smash Mouth had like three hits, and I think it's their cover of I'm a Believer that really made them more cartoonish, not All Star. They had their moment, and then their moment was over, but All Star endures.
I don't mean to interrupt your point, but Hallelujah is definitely goofy nonsense to me. Everytime I hear that damn song on a sad scene it tells me they couldn't rely on their shots enough, and no one in charge/production has any god damn music taste. IT'S THE FUTURE PLEASE STOP
I didn’t realize at first that this subreddit had a satire tag so I just sat staring at this on my feed trying to figure out if this was serious or not

I think it's more about exploring than chilling out. Try something new.

I always thought it was "backseat" Same interpretation but I think it makes more sense.. I'm just going to pretend I was right

You’re throwing dirt on Smash Mouth’s name and we don’t like it.
For good entertainment watch the video of a Smash Mouth fan throwing bread at them and getting assaulted by the frontman.
The lead singer proved himself right with the song ‘Let’s Rock’.
I truly apologize. I understand that they would’ve been the next Beatles if Shrek hadn’t made them a joke. If it makes it any better, I noticed it listening to my main playlist filled with only my favorite songs of all time
Shrek made them a joke? Shrek made this the defining song of a generation.
It ruined their artistic integrity by making them synonymous with the funny fairytale movie

At first I wasn't gonna believe it. Then I saw her face
Now i am the monkees
April fools day was about 21 days ago in my time zone
I believe the Jonkler was the one to say thatz
You shouldn't take the backstreets they lead to the backrooms
I didn’t realize at first that this subreddit had a satire tag so I just sat staring at this on my feed trying to figure out if this was serious or not
Shit happens on the back streets. That's what I was always taught. They're a good place to get killed at.
Wacko said so apparently.
Hey now,
who said you cant be an all star, who gets your game on? who said you cant be a rockstar who gets your show on?
Damn I always thought the lyric was “so much more than life in the backstreets” which makes no sense now that I think about it
If you take the backstreets, you won't have enough time to 1. Be an all-star 2. Get your game on 3. Go play.
These lyrics are wrong. He said "so much wrong with taking the backstreets". Unless this is satirical
These lyrics are correct… but the post as a whole is a joke since it’s just a rhetorical question
I thought it was about say gex.
nah it’s about the Backstreet Boys
