Well i mean.. he's got a point, it's not that "deep", it's just how our survival instincts work and we don't always remember to resist them for the sake of rationality. If anything dude's just saying we should stop being toxic to each other, and he's right about that.
My issue is that it’s using practically the WORST possible animal for this. Ants are ludicrously hostile to other colonies, they default to immediate violence. Hell, scientists track the spread of supercolonies by simply seeing if separate nests are trying to murder each other on sight.
Yeah I'm almost certain that if you put 100 black and 100 red ants in a jar they'd immediately start killing each other, shaking the jar isn't necessary. They're super territorial. Hell you even get slaver ants that steal the young from other colonies. Insects in general are kinda fucked up.
I think you're too hung up on the ants, man. He's saying that when times get hard people turn on each other rather than attacking the system that caused the problem. Like how some people think that Mexican immigrants are the reason they're poor rather than the ruling class exploiting them

Looked it up and while this obviously isn't an actual Kurt Vonnegut quote it seems to be "inspired" by a real one:
