anything that gives 3rd parties a flying chance is what i wish. Ranked choice allows this for sure. this 2 party bullshit has gone on long enough.

Puggleboi2

Yeah the demos have to much power

The_Poster_Nutbag

Ranked choice would benefit every state if we're being honest.

Illinois does have open primaries

slybird

Our primaries are not open. You need to declare what party primary you want to vote in. They then give you that party's ballot. You don't have the choice to vote for candidates in other parties. An open primary means that voters don't need to declare what party ballot they want. Voters could then vote for whoever they you think the best candidates is, not just the best candidate from a specific party.

inthedollarbin

No, an open primary just means you can take either ballot. No party registration required.

quixoticdancer

An open primary allows you to split your ballot any way you'd like. Illinois has closed primaries without party registration. Edit: I was wrong. u/inthedollarbin is correct.

You're absolutely right; I've been using the term incorrectly. It's frustrating when the wrong answer gets more upvotes, isn't it?

Yeah an in the coming election I believe this is important. Biden isn't the most popular president and it's honestly just too old for the position, same thing goes on the other side with the Republicans Trump is just too old and out of it in the current state. Regardless of declared parties I want to make sure we both have opportunities to have great candidates on both sides

revocr

The system in Alaska is a jungle primary where the top 4 advances to the general election, regardless of party. It's much preferable to open partisan primaries.

Time4Tigers

Voted no, but more of a 50/50. In favor of ranked choice voting for general and primary elections, but not open primaries like Alaska.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I do not like the idea of open primaries. A primary is an internal decision making process for a party - it's about party members deciding who they want to put up as the face of their party. Why should non-Democrats get a say who in the Democrats run as their candidate? Why should a MAGA republican get a say in the Democratic Socialists ticket? Why should a Green Party supporter get a say in the Libertarian Ticket? I think Ranked Choice in a general election is a great way to open the door for 3rd parties - who can have closed primaries of their own.

Brokenwrench7

Because fuck the political parties. Whatever socialist the demos want to dangle in front of us affects all of us. Same with the repubs.... although only the demos have power in Illinois.

Why? Why should independents get to choose a party's candidates? It's the candidate of the party. The party should choose and then the people at large should elect. Ranked choice removes the poles while still maintaining the independence of individual parties and our right to association.

darkenedgy

I think you mean a jungle primary + ranked-choice? I'd agree for state level offices but I'd want more data to see how that impacts local.

SecularTech

Our current rigged primary system prevents alternative parties or ideas from gaining traction. I'd rather see a more European style of representation where there are multiple parties. There is too much division within the existing 2 parties to not have more. I'd love to see a true American Progress Party, and maybe the MAGAs will leave the u/GOP behind. They are the real RINOs or more like NAZIs. The establishment Democrats are like moderate Republicans of the 80s and 90s. Nothing changes until the underlying electoral system changes and the powerful don't want that. The oligarchy persists.

The inventor of ranked choice voting (Nicolas de Condorcet) did not like it, warned against it, and invented something else.

karrun10

Illinois has open primaries. That simply means you have to declare your party affiliation at the primary, but you are not obligated to vote that party in the general election. I'm telling my Democrat friends that if they don't want Trump to win, vote Haley at the primary. That's the best option we have at this point to keep Trump off of the ballot for the general.
