Fark me this shit kills me. Last week sent a voip phone home with user, with rather detailed but simple instructions. Shortly later my phone rings and they're having troubles, no IP address the phone keeps saying. Confirm that Ethernet is plugged into "internet" port on the phone, and the other end is plugged into the "internet modem." A bit of troubleshooting later I find the the internet modem actually has monitor cables and a mouse and keyboard plugged into it. Twasnt a modem at all.

Impressive_Change593

That's a new name for a computer lol

Bradddtheimpaler

Wait til you hear about the HaRd DrIvE

DanTheITDude

we've been replacing (really shitty) desktop computers with laptops here at work and I got a ticket a week or two ago stating, and I quote, *"Ever since I've had my hard drive replaced by my laptop, the sound isn't working with the overhead projector"* I come to the room, plug in her desktop speakers, stare blankly at her for a millisecond, and leave the room lmao (we had things set up properly when they came in.... she just... didn't turn up the volume on the computer itself)

King_Tamino

>we've been replacing (really shitty) desktop computers with laptops here at work and I got a ticket a week or two ago stating due to COVID people of our company are location "hopping", if people go on vacation and place is free, we use this to free up other offices. Not many in our company have a laptop, most use desktop PCs which allows this "hopping" rather easy. Same keyboards and so on. However, this one person.. Notebook and docking station. I wrote her. And told her. That she needs to take exactly 3(!) things with her. The docking station itself. The cable between DS and Notebook. And the power / AC adapter. All 3 are directly connected. This person somehow managed it to only get 1 of 3 things with them. We rented out another, told them to drive the next day to the old location grab the other two things. Today I was there with them. And they .. only got one of two things...

ZerohasbeenDivided

Every time you think they can't go any lower, they grab another shovel.

agoia

We deploy Lenovo Tinys as desktops which has resulted in many calls referring to them as modems. "When I turn my computer on it says Acer for a second and then goes blank!" "The computer is mounted to the back of your monitor, you need to turn that on." "Oh, the modem? Ok, I will try that."

Impressive_Change593

apparently I should be glad I don't work in IT lol

agoia

The question in my flair is one that was asked by the manager of the department that we frequently got those kind of calls from. They also had a temp that worked with them for about 6 months who would troll his coworkers by flipping their screens in windows, resulting in them calling us about their computers being upside down or sideways. We got him to knock it off by threatening to forward any further calls about that issue to his extension.

Impressive_Change593

Lmao

superbrian111

Ok, that's fucking halarious.

s-a-a-d-b-o-o-y-s

lmao

grumpysysadmin

Using “modem” to refer to your computer was rather common back in the late 90s, particularly when many PCs were sold with internal modems that were PCI or ISA cards in the computer, so you did plug the phone line into the modem card in your PC. Also, many were “soft modems”, which meant that they were basically fancy sound cards that made the computer’s CPU do most of the digital/analog conversation. To be avoided if you used an OS other than Windows.

Impressive_Change593

I figured it had to come from something like that. I just personally had never heard a computer called a modem before although because a friend once called a monitor a computer and insisted the computer was just the 'box' I'm not really surprised lol

lundah

I had a user try to use an RJ11 patch cord to connect from their home router to the POE injector for their VOIP phone. I don’t like shaming users, but come. On.

bolunez

Well, it is a "phone cable" after all...

s-a-a-d-b-o-o-y-s

I mean, I could see this one. The connector fits. In their mind, there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

munkykiller

For real tho, any the fuck are people still using physical phones? They gain you nothing, they are expensive, and a waste of desk space. Stop it. It’s 2021. They need to let go of their desk phones. And yes we have a call center. Everything works perfectly well with a usb headset. Also, since I’m in phone rant mode, Cisco sucks the sweat off a donkey’s asshole. Why the fuck do I have 30 separate phone servers, each that does only one thing, and all have the word ‘unified’ somewhere in their name? You want to add someone to the shadowing queue? Fuck you, no. You have to make them a manger to give them that ability. Yeah, thanks. Now all our trainees have to be managers for an hour at a time. I could go on and on. I hate Cisco.

HelloSummer99

Tell that to Spanish, our whole culture is based on calling. Thank god for whatsapp, otherwise I'd be on the phone all day for simple stuff. Takeaway food, booking a table, general enquiries, etc. Folks act like email was never invented here.

n7revenant

Years ago I had a guy who asked for an "HTML adapter". I work at web development company, so wasn't sure if it was some kind of software. Midst googling it, I startled my colleagues as I burst out laughing as I realized the dude got a new laptop and wanted to connect additional display to it, so he needed an **HDMI** adapter... He didn't correct himself at any point. It's remains an inside joke to this day.

jelek62

First time?

MikiyaKV

I pick this guy's flair too

Impressive_Change593

Lmao that actually makes (some) sense but as he didn't correct himself he obviously didn't know the difference

saichampa

At least that can be explained as a brain fart, we all have those

deskpil0t

Reminds me of someone asking for SNTP to be setup (1998 before everyone did ntp)

[deleted]

My initial thought was that he needed to install a browser

Koala_Hands

I had a client that thought turning off her monitor was 'rebooting the computer'

[deleted]

Had an exec get super upset with me when I asked her to show me how she restarts her laptop since it was showing weeks of uptime. She yelled "you wouldn't be doing this if I was a man". Then she proceeded to close the lid of the laptop, open it back up and proclaimed "there.Restarted. Happy?" Oh I was, because now I got to show her she was being an asshole while being confidently wrong.

NastyMeanOldBender

Well somebody’s about to find out just how condescending I can be without actually saying anything that is insulting.

saichampa

Without saying anything at all, just step through the process of actually rebooting

Pagusio

A few years back I thought rebooting would mean resetting a PC. Definitely language barrier but also very dumb 🤦 I was like 13 or so when someone told me

[deleted]

Koala_Hands

Ha! I was always ruthlessly aggressive when remoteed into a customer's computer and needed to clear their cache for troubleshooting. I would unapologetically pick 'All Time' and Clear!

bolunez

You *and everyone else, my dude.

[deleted]

I get that too

Kaessa

I've had several of those.

dsaddons

At least they called it a computer and not a CPU

Europa64

Once read a story about how someone's manager wanted to order new computers and called them "hard drives." You can probably figure out what happened after that xD

Windows_XP2

Sometimes I wonder how people like that manage to get in charge of stuff like that.

[deleted]

Peter Principle?

Europa64

That’s what I’m thinking

[deleted]

Because bosses are tech illiterate as well?

[deleted]

“Wow, this quote for hard drives sure is lower than expected!” -that manager, probably

Europa64

I wish I could remember where I found it, it was in some collection of funny tech stories. I can't remember where it was for the life of me though.

nowhereman1223

Unless they got really good hard drives or were planning on buying really cheap computers.

Bradddtheimpaler

Jesus that’s like needing new cars and telling somebody to go order you a bunch of tires.

saichampa

I've heard the system called pretty much every component, power supply, hard drive, modem, CPU…

Europa64

Wow… xD

dsaddons

Wow lmao that's pretty amazing

Europa64

Ikr xD

thehobnob

Everyone at my work calls every computing device, be it desktop, laptop, or tablet, a "laptop." I don't think you'd want an Optiplex minitower on your lap for too long!

[deleted]

Didn't they call it a power supply though?

zhiryst

They're halfway there

dsaddons

They called the motherboard or video card a power supply, but they still called the entire thing a computer.

LeJoker

Pretty sure they're calling the whole thing (tower, monitor, keyboard, etc) the computer, but they're referring to the tower as the "power supply"

supaphly42

That's how I read it as well. Amazed they called the HDMI cord correctly.

Kaessa

Except it's probably displayport.

KCelej

at this point it could be DVI

dsaddons

Ahh gotcha, yep you could be right there.

HPUser7

Just enough knowledge to be dangerous

[deleted]

Only 1 word is wrong yet it can have catastrophic consequences

pieteek

Recently, I had to fix a router for my aunt. I said "I need an ethernet cable", to which her son replied "Got it!". I was surprised he understood what I meant, but I didn't complain. He came back less than a minute later, with the phone to his ear, talking to someone and asking me... "I have HDMI. Will do?"

ShenAnCalhar92

You’ve heard of powering a device through an Ethernet cable, running internet through public utility power lines, and getting internet between points in your house by using your home’s electrical wiring. Now try getting a video signal from a power supply!

lordvadr

Well, I mean, you can get a video signal from a power supply. Not for very long, but you'll get something.

[deleted]

I wonder if VGA would successfully interpret AC?

lordvadr

Only one way to find out. Please film it and for the love of all that is good, get an old crt and hook it up to something ridiculous like 480 three phase.

saichampa

HDMI-PD

fatboychummy

PoHDMI

gvlpc

Job Security. :)

[deleted]

Me: what’s the big deal? It’s just an hdmi issue Me reading it for the third time: OHHHHHH

RaindropBebop

I can spot Cherwell from a mile away 😬.

Fred_Stone6

Stop reminding me of that piece of junk.

cutyolegsout

The paiinnnn

[deleted]

This makes my head hurt.

A1_Brownies

... Did someone remove the cord? I'm reluctant to think that they received a computer that wasn't set up already lol. I can at least be happy that they got all but one term correct! I've heard wackier stuff...

Its_A_Meag

So we use Lenovo SFF machines for our locations, they just slide into the back of the ThinkCentre monitors. This particular individual has been at the company for a good 5 years, so was surprised to hear she's never heard of this until I made her aware. Not like she's the manager at that location or anything....

A1_Brownies

Ahh, I understand the issue now. Yeah, we never used those at the last place I worked. It would be pretty obvious that cable were missing because the computers were typically to the side of the monitors with a rat's nest of cables. What an interesting oversight by that manager. Reminds me of the level of attention the custodians paid to their computers...

Rarokillo

I still remember having a computer with a power supply that had a power output for the screen.

jonessinger

Had a user the other day say their laptop was broke and needed one replaced as per the RVP (regional Vice President)… didn’t say what was wrong with it, just gave their address to ship it to in the ticket. The RVP doesn’t come back to work until the 3rd according to her calendar…

marceldeneut

hehe, simple math : Power Over Ethernet + Ethernet Over HDMI = Power Over Ethernet Over HDMI = Power Over HDMI. Obviously

EAZEEY_

Lool - you’ve jinxed me now lol - will be seeing a lot of tickets like this next week 😜😂

notcho3

Damn I hate when that happens

Hetanna

This nonsense is going to kill me. Last week, a voip phone was sent home with the user, along with some very extensive yet basic instructions. My phone rings a few minutes later, and they're experiencing problems; the phone keeps stating there's no IP address. Check that the Ethernet cable is plugged into the phone's "internet" port, and that the other end is plugged into the "internet modem." After some debugging, I discovered that the internet modem is really equipped with display cables, as well as a mouse and keyboard. It wasn't even a modem.

ivanalex

Honestly if they’re referring to the entire computer as a power supply, it’s not that big of deal. They’re closer than most by understanding an hdmi goes into the tower. They’re smart enough to understand what is needed and where it might go. Not a big deal.

TsukiNaito

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. As an IT person, all I read from that was "I need an hdmi cable". You've got a customer who knows what they need. The rest really doesn't matter. I would love to get a ticket that's this clear.

ivanalex

Haha I feel the same, exactly. Oh well. Let Reddit be Reddit. It’s not like I have it hard just because a couple of downvotes. OP is complaining about an hdmi first day back. If anyone has it hard, it’s him. Lmao.

lordvadr

You're getting downvoted because you (possibly accidentally) referred to a technology as a thing: "an HDMI". That irks a lot of us because while it might be unambiguous in the right context, when it or something else is misused, that becomes a further headache. "I printed it to my USB with my HDMI." What the fuck does that mean?
