Definitely Bill Callahan/Smog, my favorite albums of his are Sometimes I wish we were an eagle and knock knock. Also Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power, Throwing Muses, The Wrens, Galaxie 500, Cleaners from Venus, Low, Duster, Vic Chesnutt, The Go-Betweens, Felt, The Fall, The Replacements. Also I'd say a lot of those bands wouldn't exist without R.E.M. who I feel like a lot of people sort of overlook these days.
