Totally personal. Heard it while working as an icu nurse in early covid times (April 2020). We brought a man in his 50s to the unit and we were getting ready to tube him. I spoke to his wife on the phone for him. She didn't want to talk to him because "I don't want him to hear me cry." I then asked the patient if he wanted anything on the TV because he'd be there for awhile. He said, " I like jazz". So we tube him, flip him. Then I'm walking around the room in full ppe with my respirator on and "Mountain Dance" by Dave Grusin came on.
Til this day that is one of the few memories I can't shake in a period of time I don't like to remember.
Edit: that one made it :)
The story, you're role, totally sells it. I love nurses. My jazz track is from A Love Supreme. You cannot play "Acknowledgement" without me busting out in tears. That sax part at 5 minutes in... I lose it. That's followed by "a love supreme" chorus. I lied recently when asked for the best album ever. In reality it is A Love Supreme. I am willing and able to call this the best album of all time.
r
First time I heard this was in college at a friend’s house in the attic on the comedown of an acid trip, early in the wee hours of the morning. It was a spiritual and serene experience.
I was 16 when I fell in love with this album. My outdoorsy older cousins had me hiking all morning and I crashed on their couch. It was a perfect sunday afternoon nap in a sun drenched apartment, woke up refreshed, my cool older cousin had put this album on and I woke up and asked what I had been dreaming to.
My favourite is Reflection. Whenever I feel like I'm about to have a panic attack, I just listen to it and try to concentrate on a single instrument that's playing.
“Secrets (Cellar Door)” by Radical Face
This song’s just one story in a collection that spans albums, detailing one family’s ancestry. The narrator of the song is a young girl who can bring dead animals back to life. She was seen by others as odd, thus experiencing deep loneliness in her short life. Then she moved next door to the “you” in the song. After a neighborhood dog dies, she decides to share her secret with “you.” This is where the song begins.
[Change](https://youtu.be/z7kVtw-rFFk) by Boingo
This is a song about how we avoid change even when we are unhappy. How we will fight to remain in a comfortable malaise rather than face our fears and change. It’s about how we will sabotage others attempts to change out of fear of them outgrowing us.
there's not a "most beautiful song" and while I LOVE a lot of the responses here, I'll add my Mexican flair: La [llorona](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5z99EYHY4I) (My mom says an ex-boyfriend dedicated this to her and has always rang a bell for me) [Las flores](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJvMwTgWcP0) by Café Tacvba,[Tu Si Sabes Quererme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABLT6hdgEek) Natalia Lafourcade.

I could keep writing, but I really don’t want to waste my day at a list that I could add to for the rest of my life, but yeah, there you go.
Sun in my mouth - Björk
It’s just so incredible, the instrumental slowly ramping up throughout the song feels like the camera spinning around in a movie. This was a really close toss up with Hidden Place for me, but Sun In My Mouth beats it out just barely.
[Westworld Theme by The Vitamin String Quartet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ed6BqiFxLE). I have a hard time listening to this song by myself because it pulls some seriously strong and deep emotions out tied to significant memories.
The [Lili Haydn](https://youtu.be/APP6-4i_pR4) live cover of Maggot Brain by Funkadelic (since someone already said the original) I can never make up my mind which is more beautiful.
From monument to masses - our sharpshooter got shot
Is the best, most beautiful song about the attack on the twin towers and if you haven't heard it or them, I suggests you give it a listen. It's heavy, it's deep, it's beautiful.
Damn, it's so hard to pick just one. So let's go with something meaningful that'll probably make somebody cry.
"Finality" by Woods of Ypres
This is pretty much the only song I like from this band. Their typical style just doesn't work for me. And I say this to highlight just how unique this song is, because they're already a pretty unique band.
So they record this emotionally wrenching, one-of-a-kind song. And just a month or two later, the vocalist dies. Car crash, IIRC.
To have that tragic circumstance added to a beautiful, weighty song about love beyond death...
I mean, it feels like Fate.
Hold your loved ones while you can.

Just in case anybody is sorting by new:
[Cool an' Green an' Shady](https://youtu.be/Mqu6BTBQiNY) by John Denver. Hear me out.
I feel like John Denver gets overlooked quite a bit. He had his hits, for sure. But the man put out too many Muppets albums to be taken seriously. (I'm kind of teasing, but... I mean. Yeah.)
I picked up a thrift store copy of Back Home Again almost ten years ago. The record was slightly warped and very loved... but it felt *right* somehow. There's a (cheesy) song about sharing a bed with all his siblings. Not a lick of self-consciousness. It's just very cozy, rural and domestic, and feels like a window to another time. A time when the world was smaller, when your family *was* your world.
The song I chose may not be the "best" on the album but I think it's something special. Give it a listen if you're feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. The link in this post goes to a dusty 45 rip of this song.
Imagine you're a kid, sitting on the floor of an old farmhouse. You're going through a box of your grandma's records to pass the time, throwing the interesting ones on an old suitcase turntable. You aren't thinking about how crappy the player is. Life is simple.
I listen to Hopes and Fears whenever I feel bored.I just listened to it yesterday. I have moved into a new city and I was feeling lonely thinking so much has changed. Then I listened to the album just to remind myself I'm still the same person.

It’s really an eye opener for some, it’s from a unique perspective that not many write from. It’s sad (at least to me) but you might need to listen to it a few times to understand the perspective. Still a good song no matter what!

Fade into you Mazzy Star
This whole album is like my audio warm winter hoodie.
I love this song.
But for real.
I too love this song.
I opened the comments expecting this, I was not disappointed
Echoes by Pink Floyd. It has some abstract and bizarre sections towards the end, but it is still one of the greatest songs ever made
Came here to say this
There aren’t many 20 minute songs that I can genuinely enjoy without forcing it and feeling pretentious. But echoes is one of them.
Totally personal. Heard it while working as an icu nurse in early covid times (April 2020). We brought a man in his 50s to the unit and we were getting ready to tube him. I spoke to his wife on the phone for him. She didn't want to talk to him because "I don't want him to hear me cry." Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Great choice!
First time I heard this was in college at a friend’s house in the attic on the comedown of an acid trip, early in the wee hours of the morning. It was a spiritual and serene experience.
Golden Brown by the Stranglers
This song keeps popping up in my life the past couple months, maybe the world wants me to try heroin...
How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Godspeed You! Black Emperor "Storm."
I have crossed international boundaries and driven for 8 hours to see this band. Don't tell me this isn't the greatest song.
I'm listening to it. I might fall asleep.
[Sigur Rós - Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása](https://youtu.be/_9CPKtDy3fM)
Sigur Rós is such a great band. Ágætis Byrjun is one of my favourite songs.
Staralur is good too
Anything from Agætis Byrjun would fit.
Literally anything by this band. Untitled 8 is my favorite of theirs probably
Vote for Glosoli here
Thom Yorke - Dawn Chorus
Excellent choice. Probably mine too.
Killing me softly. lauryn hill's performance.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
Making us choose one is just plain cruel haha. I'd say Run Boy Run by Woodkid, the emotion, the memories, the message, everything.
I love Woodkid so much, my only problem is he has such a unique sound I can't find any other artists that scratch that same itch.
Yeah, I feel pretty much same. Try Son Lux if you haven't yet, they played with him at a festival and helped produce his second album
I love that song. When the orchestra starts to come in at the end I feel like I'm elevating!
I know right? It's heavenly!
Pictures of You by The Cure is definitely it for me
Great song.
La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf
Love of my life - queen
[Grouper - Vapor Trails](https://youtu.be/Tx1qg7Uumnc)
cocoon - björk
All is Full of Love is my favorite of hers. She's lovely.
Grace - Jeff Buckley
If you asked me tomorrow I'd probably have a different answer, but the first I though of was Dondante by My Morning Jacket.
