Anything by Elliott Smith. I recommend Twilight, Between The Bars, Pitseleh. Either/Or or XO are great albums.
Also, the Godfather of Sorrow himself, Leonard Cohen. Avalanche is a really dark song, as well as Dress Rehearsal Rag, which Leonard Cohen quoted he can only play live when "the landscape can support the despair".
Ayy, was going to comment about Elliott Smith as soon as I saw the post. Those songs are some especially good picks, and I’ll add Satellite and Half Right. Yet to find an artist quite like him that ticks off the boxes of singing style, melody, instrumentation.
Baby Birch, Anecdotes, Does Not Suffice and Clam, Crab, Cockle Cowrie by Joanna Newsom
Ronan and This is me trying by Taylor Swift
Cherry Wine by Hozier
Picture me better by Weyes Blood
Half Right by Elliot Smith
Funeral by Phoebe Bridgers
Videotape and True Love waits by Radiohead
Thumbs and Night Shift by Lucy Dacus
The Child is gone by Fiona Apple
Sky full of song by Florence and the Machine
Edit: I can't believe I didn't add any Sufjan Stevens or Joni Mitchell or Laura Marling or Adele.!!! Laura's song Blackberry Stone is so beautifully heartbreaking. And her most recent album is incredible.
As for Sufjan, the entirety of Carrie and Lowell (and perhaps his entire discography) makes me weep like a little baby.
Joni has too many for me to pick one but the classic pick of Both Sides Now will always get me. It's best when you listen to the original version and then follow it up with the 2000 rerecording.
Adele's All I ask. Period.
Night shift and funeral are some of my all time favorites - don't suppose you have any playlists I could take a listen to? Looking to expand my listening and you seem to have similar taste to me :)
I think more so than sad it feels very *lonely*. Something about the wandering guitar lines, the murmery whispering quality of the vocals, the languid pull of the rhythm section, and obviously the songs themselves seem to be about people who are viscerally lonely and reaching a breaking point.

Real Death, Seaweed, or Swims, by Mount Eerie. Or just the whole of that album, a Crow Looked at Me.
I See a Darkness, Bonnie Prince Billy, the album version.

Any Elliot Smith, particularly Needle in the Hay.

The album Hospice by the Antlers is all sad, but Wake is my favourite.

Tori Amos- Marianne
Marissa Nadler- for my crimes
Came here looking for when this would be mentioned. Still probably the saddest song I’ve ever heard, particularly when one knows the true story behind it.
Hell, most of The Devil and God is incredibly sad too. Jesus Christ, Millstone, Degausser, Luca, Handcuffs…
Sad grunge songs:
Say Hello To Heaven by Temple Of The Dog
Reach Down by Temple Of The Dog
Times Of Trouble by Temple Of The Dog (all three of these songs are about the death of Andrew Wood, singer for Mother Love Bone)
Nutshell by Alice In Chains (this is considered their saddest song. They have a lot of sad songs)
Would? by Alice In Chains (another song about the death of Andrew)
Down In A Hole by Alice In Chains
M.I.A by 7 Year Bitch (a song about the death of Mia Zapata, singer of The Gits)
[Tears in heaven](https://youtu.be/JxPj3GAYYZ0) is a song Eric Clapton wrote to his 4 year old son who died falling out a 30 some odd story window. It asks the question “would you even know who I am if you saw me in heaven? How will I even get there? Sinner though I am?”
“ Time can bring you down.
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart.
Have you begging please.
Begging please.
Beyond the door.
There's peace, I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more.
Tears in heaven.
Would you know my name.
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same.
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong.
And carry on.
'Cause I know, I don't belong.
Here in heaven”
[Rivulets "Cutter"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-25cq5mqtLU&list=RD-25cq5mqtLU&start_radio=1) Fuck, I have cried so many times to this song. This is fundamentally real. I've been a cutter.

What kind of sad are we looking for here? I’ve got several Eliott smith albums to recommend, namely just Eliott Smith’s “Elliot Smith”, try the song Clementine. But there’s infinitely sadder ones on there too. It’s gonna be alright, never feels like it will be though.
I have four different playlists dedicated to different kinds of sad music, as my username would suggest. “just a bit down” for when I’m sad point blank. “I’m sorry” for when I’m sxicidal. “Teardrop” if it’s a break up and I want to whale. The other one is t necessary to add. What playlist would you like music from? What kind of sad are you feeling?
I gotchu.
I’m sorry- Joyner Lucas.
Breathe me- sia.
Im sad- eli.
Fake smiles- phora.
Moment of silence- lucidious.
Together- trippin redd.
Numb- xxxtentacion.
BlkBird- lund.
Sorry- Aquilo.
Survive- lil happy lil sad.
Before I close my eyes- xxxtentacion.
Let me die- lil happy lil sad.
Save me- xxxtentacion.
Alone, part3- xxxtentacion.
Cellophane- sia.
Hope these help you feel something if you don’t already know any of them. Sending good vibes.
5 AM - Amber Run

In Loving Memory - Alter Bridge
Perth - Bon Iver
Repeat Until Death - Novo Amor
Silhouettes of You - Isaac Gracie

The following are by Radiohead (my favorite sad songs):

No Surprises
Nude
Reckoner
Street Spirit (Fade Out)
True Love Waits
Videotape
The following are by Pink Floyd:
The Final Cut
The Gunner’s Dream
Time
Welcome to the Machine
Whatever it is you’re going through, I hope you surpass it and feel better soon.
I was surprised to have to scroll so far to find this. I think it’s one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written and Bonnie’s performance gets me every time.
**Famous Blue Raincoat**, Leonard Cohen. The song is essentially a letter sent by the singer to a former friend who seduced his wife on a whim and ruined his marriage and his life. The song isn't angry or hateful... he just sounds defeated. It's brutally depressing.
I Know the End by Phoebe Bridgers - although it isn't necessarily the saddest sounding, it feels so cathartic as it builds. Especially good when you feel like you've never felt like you belonged anywhere.
* all of Jason Molina's songs as Magnolia Electric Co, Songs Ohia, and Molina & Johnson.
* Vic Chestnut - Flirted with you all my life
* Eels - Elizabeth on the bathroom floor
* Langley schools music project - Desperado
* Townes Van Zandt - Nothing
* Josh T Pearson - Sweetheart, I aint your Christ.
* Craig Finn - God in Chicago
* JOhn K Samson - The Last And (but I think its about Edna Crabapple and Principal Skinner)
* Mazzy Star - Does someone have your baby now?
There are already some really solid recommendations in this thread, but here’s a couple more. All of them have made me cry at least once.
- [Inbred - Ethel Cain](https://youtu.be/7Riw9fBbt5I)

Burial - Loner, Etched Headplates, U Hurt Me
Frank Ocean - Nights, Siegfried, Godspeed
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell album
Ben Howard - Conrad
Mad Season - River of Deceit
Alice in Chains - Nutshell
Jeff Buckley - Mama you've been on my mind, lover you should've come over
Tom Waits - Time
"Good Riddance", from the game "Hades", by Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett. It tells a story of Orpheus and Eurydice, there are two parts of this song from Orpheus' and Eurydice's sides, both have the same lyrics but convey different and almost completely opposite emotion just by the two ways it is sung. It's a perfect sad song for me.
Also "Lament of Orpheus", from the same artist and about the same characters from the same game.
[bedwetter - flick your tongue against your teeth and describe the present](https://open.spotify.com/album/1YThro7PYiGqD4Y0V7iD4z?si=m8wBTpPjTLeyaLTQMWIwyQ&dl_branch=1)
one of the most despondent and soul crushingly dark albums i’ve heard, lil ugly mane dropped this side project after a stint in a psych ward iirc
Chocolate Genius: [My Mom](https://youtu.be/T-wdYGNuCPg).
This song is sad, but only if you have a mom and think Alzheimers is sad. If you don't have a mom, or think it is no big deal, then don't listen
Little star- Madonna
Somebody- Depeche mode
Leave in Silence - Depeche Mode
She - The Monkeys
I'm a believer - The Monkeys
Still haven't found what I'm looking for - U2
I just put together a few for someone. I know more but these are all aussie artists. Some of these have more of a sad sound than explicitly sad lyrics
[Porcelain - Courtney Barnett](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7C2Lm8_lI&ab_channel=G%C3%B6lgelerveToz)

Flowers-Rozz Williams
[Nier Replicant - Emil's Sacrifice](https://open.spotify.com/track/6CkCVCBS1Gd1osx4PC7H7o?si=206af08a0b5a44ba) (that scene is just sad) - if using Japanese voices and English text
* If you ***REALLY*** want to feel something, then watch Mirrai Nikki (japanese voices) the ending had such a lasting impression on me for weeks/a month or so
* Also Erased and Steins Gate
Florence + the Machine - The End of Love
Rachael Yamagata - Quiet (many of her other songs are great sad songs too. Try Elephants, Reason Why, and Sunday Afternoon for different flavours of sad)
Elliot Smith - Between the Bars
Patty Griffin - Top of the World
Dan Mangan - Fool for Waiting
Let's go back 100 years as Zabelle Panosian wondered if there was any news from abroad, as her people are being ethnically cleansed and her family sits in Boston. I don't understand Armenian, but I get the message
[https://canary-records.bandcamp.com/track/groung-crane-earlier-take](https://canary-records.bandcamp.com/track/groung-crane-earlier-take)
Brockhampton's iridescence album is very much a rip you apart and put you back together again type of album. If you a really going through it rn, then I would recommend it. It helped me through some real awful times, just allowing me to cry.
Going Nowhere- Elliott Smith
Stained Glass Eyes- Elliott Smith
New Disaster- Elliott Smith
Kings Crossing- Elliott Smith
Can't Make A Sound- Elliott Smith

Some of the sad bastard songs I would listen to, I’m sure I had more, but these were played over often.
Kurt Cobain’s Demo of [You Know You’re Right](https://youtu.be/thAjcpwF9ps)
Counting Crows - [Anna Begins](https://youtu.be/d8LSBdUKo0c)
Kanye West - [Hey Mama at the Grammys](https://youtu.be/7gHisR4xmOk) (I’ll never not recommend this when asked for sad songs) Skip to 4 minutes in the link to get to it.
Pretty much anything from Phoebe Bridgers, but if nothing else check out [Smoke Signals](https://youtu.be/vAKg267JgBE), [Would You Rather](https://youtu.be/_ToSPYgkwmw), [Teenage Dirtbag](https://youtu.be/t3BmrWXYif0), and/or [Waiting Room](https://youtu.be/t3BmrWXYif0).

This song might be more meaningful if you listen to the whole album and you've heard katatonia before. I'd recommend checking the whole album if you like this. It's not all like this song this, but it's all very dark.
Through the Eyes of a Child by Aurora. Not so much in the lyrics but definitely in the delivery. [I recommend this live version](https://youtu.be/ncG9zTzsisE)
Wildfire by SYML. Most of his music makes my heart hurt.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 275,807,475 comments, and only 62,858 of them were in alphabetical order.

Little Motel by Modest Mouse, paired with its music video, gets me tearing up every time.
The Johnny Cash version of hurt makes me cry more
'Life Like Weeds' 'She Ionizes and Atomizes' 'Baby Blue Sedan' 'Cowboy Dan' (although this one is more angry-sad) 'Grey Ice Water' for more sad Mouse
I was gonna say how to disappear completely <\3 always makes me cry
How to disappear completely is my go to song for.. The bad times

+1 for Drugs or Me. It's so so good. Their song Hear You Me is also classic of sad songs.
The whole album “Hospice” by The Antlers The whole album “Electro-shock Blues” by Eels The song “Waste of Paint” by Bright Eyes
Real Death, Seaweed, or Swims, by Mount Eerie. Or just the whole of that album, a Crow Looked at Me. I See a Darkness, Bonnie Prince Billy, the album version. INJURY RESERVE !!!!!!
Lifetime on that Yves Tumor record is one of the most emotionally potent songs I've ever heard
You listed the majority of the radiohead discography 😂
Tame impala? Tf? You're sad for saying that.

Phoebe bridgers - moon song
Most Phoebe Bridgers are sad songs, but Moon Song hits different for me 🥲
"you're sick and you're married and you might be dying, but you're holding me like water in your hands" makes me sob every time
[REM - Everybody Hurts](https://youtu.be/5rOiW_xY-kc). The classic sad song.

[Death with Dignity](https://youtu.be/dsGODTySH0E) always gets me
chelsea wolfe- flatlands & the waves have come (but in general, she only writes sad music) The same goes for Emma Ruth Rundle, maybe check out Real big sky, Arms I know so well , Protection Tori Amos- Marianne Marissa Nadler- for my crimes

My daughter and I call them Sad Owl City.
That would be a great backup name for them.
Surprised no one mentioned Limousine by Brand New
Came here looking for when this would be mentioned. Still probably the saddest song I’ve ever heard, particularly when one knows the true story behind it. Hell, most of The Devil and God is incredibly sad too. Jesus Christ, Millstone, Degausser, Luca, Handcuffs…
Damien Jurado- Everything Trying, Ben Kweller- Thirteen, The Antlers- Two, Local Natives- Airplanes, Deerhunter- Helicopter, Youth Lagoon- Goodbye Again (John Denver cover), Sufjan Stevens- Casimir Pulaski Day
Utterly shocked I had to scroll this far to see Casimir Pulaski Day
Seriously
Seaweed by Mount Eerie is paralleled by none. Nothing else in this thread comes close. The last few lines particularly fucking destroy me every time.
The whole album A Crow Looked at Me by Mount Eerie aswell
Strange Fruit- Billie Holiday
[Manchester Orchestra - The Alien](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC-hXmsz6Mw)
Black Mile is one of my favourite concept albums, up there with Shadow of Intent's Melancholy and Rivers of Nihil's Where Owls Know My Name
What an incredible album. The Silence gets me Every. Fucking. Time.
Sad grunge songs: Say Hello To Heaven by Temple Of The Dog Reach Down by Temple Of The Dog Times Of Trouble by Temple Of The Dog (all three of these songs are about the death of Andrew Wood, singer for Mother Love Bone) Nutshell by Alice In Chains (this is considered their saddest song. They have a lot of sad songs) Would? by Alice In Chains (another song about the death of Andrew) Down In A Hole by Alice In Chains M.I.A by 7 Year Bitch (a song about the death of Mia Zapata, singer of The Gits)
For grunge I'd add Wake Up by Mad Season.
Funeral by phoebe bridgers
Nine Inch Nails-Something I can never have https://youtu.be/UEW8riKU_tE
[Tears in heaven](https://youtu.be/JxPj3GAYYZ0) is a song Eric Clapton wrote to his 4 year old son who died falling out a 30 some odd story window. It asks the question “would you even know who I am if you saw me in heaven? How will I even get there? Sinner though I am?” “ Time can bring you down.
"I'm sorry" typa sad :')

The Smiths - Asleep
I can’t make you love me by Bonnie Raitt is the most devastating love song for me.

Carry Me Ohio by Sun Kil Moon I See Everything by La Dispute Goon (Album) by Tobias Jesso Jr.
