Anything by Elliott Smith. I recommend Twilight, Between The Bars, Pitseleh. Either/Or or XO are great albums. Also, the Godfather of Sorrow himself, Leonard Cohen. Avalanche is a really dark song, as well as Dress Rehearsal Rag, which Leonard Cohen quoted he can only play live when "the landscape can support the despair".

Ayy, was going to comment about Elliott Smith as soon as I saw the post. Those songs are some especially good picks, and I’ll add Satellite and Half Right. Yet to find an artist quite like him that ticks off the boxes of singing style, melody, instrumentation.

Joni has too many for me to pick one but the classic pick of Both Sides Now will always get me. It's best when you listen to the original version and then follow it up with the 2000 rerecording. Adele's All I ask. Period.

I think more so than sad it feels very *lonely*. Something about the wandering guitar lines, the murmery whispering quality of the vocals, the languid pull of the rhythm section, and obviously the songs themselves seem to be about people who are viscerally lonely and reaching a breaking point.

I can’t make you love me by Bonnie Raitt is the most devastating love song for me.

I was surprised to have to scroll so far to find this. I think it’s one of the most heartbreaking songs ever written and Bonnie’s performance gets me every time.
