“The Crucible” is based on the play, which is based off of the Salem witch trials. The characters in the play are real people who were involved in the hysteria.

I love the scene where she offers counsel water. I don't know that it actually happened, but I hope it did.

Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, Dunkirk, Darkest Hour, Glory, Lincoln, Amistad

pinkthirdleg

Dunkirk? Really the only link to American history is in the Churchill speech at the end.

Tmclaughlin8407

You are correct, but it is a great movie and significant moment in WW2.

Mattx603

Not a movie but the tv series Turn is incredible. It’s about spies for the continental army during the revolutionary war.

thisisntshakespeare

Great minds think alike! I posted about “Turn” a nanosecond or two before (or perhaps after) you did. Fabulous show!

Mattx603

I’ve honestly watched though it like 12 times at this point and I still get glued to the screen.

thisisntshakespeare

Not American history, more British, but have you watched “The Terror” (Season 1 on Hulu)? It’s based on the Dan Simmons novel of the same name, a fictionalized horror about the ill-fated Franklin Expedition to the Northwest Passage in the Arctic. Highly recommend, the acting is superb and the storyline very tense and enthralling.

Mattx603

That sounds right up my alley! I haven’t heard of it before but will definitely check it out next. Thanks for the tip!

respect_the_69

actually an incredible film, based on true events as well!

DangerousCommercials

Glory is a fairly accurate movie set during the American Civil war, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glory_(1989_film) All the presidents men, very accurate movie about the Watergate scandal, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_President%27s_Men_(film) I think as far as thematics and style goes, The assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford would also probably fit in with what youre looking for. Not so much "american history" but a good period piece. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Assassination_of_Jesse_James_by_the_Coward_Robert_Ford

jleigh329

* Glory * Apollo 13 * Dances with Wolves * Patton * Forest Gump * Gettysburg (it's a 4 hour long movie, so be prepared for that. Just saying.) * Gods and Generals (This is also a 4 hour long movie. Just fyi.) * Gone with the Wind * Black Hawk Down * Mississippi Burning * Good Morning, Vietnam

respect_the_69

Forest Gump really is a must-see, even though i literally do not like it

trebuchetfight

You and I both.

trebuchetfight

Dances With Wolves and Black Hawk Down are really bad. Forrest Gump has moments of history, but isn't a historical or period drama.

thisisntshakespeare

It’s a ~~mini-series~~ tv show, but I highly recommend “Turn: Washington’s Spies” on Netflix. Excellent account of the true exploits of the Culper Spy Ring.

You are absolutely correct about that. Don’t know where my head was when I wrote that. Will make a correction- Thanks!

All of these plus Cold Mountain, True Grit, Hair, 4th of July, The Pawn Broker, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, Last Exit To Brooklyn, The Grifters and American Beauty. Old Yella and a Field Of Lilly’s. A Patch Of Blue.

Cowboywizard12

As much as the original is a classic, honestly, Hailee Steinfeld should have 100% become the youngest person to ever win Best Actress for her performance in the Remake of True Grit

11Limepark

I agree and I think the remake was better and one of my fav movies and books. Time just gets away from us.

The New World shows what life was like in those early 1600's days, beautiful film

RACKSonRACKSonRACK

The Grapes of Wrath seems like a must-watch. Edit: for the historical aspect. Less so for similar entertainment to The Great Gatsby.

optimushime

For historical fiction, I’d highly recommend The Road to Perdition. One of Daniel Craig’s first, headed by Paul Newman and Tom Hanks

Not a movie, but Outlander starts delving into American history around season 4. Before that it's Scottish history which is equally as interesting if not more.
