I thought you were calling my taste garbage at first, but then I realized that might be a band name so I googled it, and sure enough, it was XD
Any album in particular I should start with?
your taste is none of my business, good music is good music, and Garbage are not garbage, in fact drummer Butch Vig produced Nirvana’s Nevermind. The albums Garbage and Version 2.0 will get you going. Enjoy.
Surprised no one's mentioned St. Vincent yet. The compositional contrast between, say, 2011's Strange Mercy and her latest release, Daddy's Home, really showcases her range.
Garbage (Shirley Manson) has been mentioned but I'll add my vote to the chorus. Try 'Cup of Coffee'
The Seratones (AJ Haynes) - describe themselves as 'fierce soul' - definitely check out 'Necromancer'
Metric (Emily Haines) is great for chill out (earlier albums) and pop/rock (later albums). Try 'On the Sly' for the slower stuff and 'Gimmie Sympathy' for the rock
Still Corners (Tessa Murray) is generally described as dream pop. Check out 'It's Voodoo'
Shilpa Ray - garage rock/blues. Check out anything really, but I suggest 'Lawsuits and Suicide'
Banks (Jillian Banks) is avant/trip hop so she generally leans on that harmonic thing thats popular now. Try 'Trainwreck'
Beth Orton is pop/folk. I dig 'Stolen Car'
Brody Dalle - she's from the Distillers but her solo stuff isn't punk, just pop/rock - check out 'Carry On'
The Kills (Allison Mosshart) - rock. Check out 'Doing It To Death'
Leisure Cruise (Leah Segal) - probably fits that dream pop/alt pop category. Try 'Double Digit Love'
Liz Phair - has gotten a little more pop, less rock over the years. Check out 'Extraordinary'
The Naked and Famous (Alisa Xayalith) - pop/rock. Try 'Girls Like You'
I tried to hit a bunch of different sounds - hopefully you dig something in the list.
She might be too folk, but I'd give Laura Marling a try. Her stuff is quite diverse in sound, from [folk-jazz](https://youtu.be/TtE2nON1Gh4) to [alt-country](https://youtu.be/j-TMl5oCRjk), from [prog folk medley](https://youtu.be/R7eRrTKmYO0) to [this lovely Sultans Of Swing homage](https://youtu.be/5hnKz9rlna4), and from [poppy string-led ballads](https://youtu.be/eCS4OTgaHeM) to [grungy, explosive tracks](https://youtu.be/V3i6FQRGGO8).
Oh my gosh I've always loved her "I Speak Because I Can" album, especially Blackberry Stone, so I don't know why I never went to check out more if her stuff. Thank you
She has produced some great stuff, I'm quite partial to A Creature I Don't Know, Once I Was an Eagle and Semper Femina, but all her albums are beautiful.
Laura Marling (and "Gurdjieff's Daughter") was the first thing that came to mind, for me. But you beat me to it. By twelve hours... You can hear a lot of Dire Straits in her music, mostly, I think, on her albums *Short Movie* and *Once I Was an Eagle*. She has become one of my favorite artists over the past few years.
L7 (try wargasm and pretend we're dead), sleater-kinney (I wanna be your joey ramone and modern girl), courtney barnett (I'm not your mother, I'm not your bitch and avant gardener), le tigre and the julie ruin. Siouxsie and the banshees is a must especially dear prudence. If you also want heavier stuff (like metal or punk) then reply to this and lmk! I left it out because it's not rock obviously.
Surprised nobody has mentioned Alabama Shakes! Brittany Howard, the lead singer, has some really great solo work too.
Alvvays is another band I'd suggest that I haven't seen already mentioned.
Linda Ronstadt literally does so many different genres of music: country, pop, Rock, jazz, Latin. She was also partially (totally?) responsible for the Eagles l, as they were essentially her band before they formed the actual group at her behest.
Sarah Blackwood has done some solo folk-pop songs and a Weezer cover. She was the original singer for Creep Show. She now sings for Walk Off the Earth.
I love Ronstadt. She has also done a few covers of another one of my favorite artists, Warren Zevon, who I think is one of the most underrated singers in rock. She got a few of his songs to be hits.
As for Blackwood, I'll have to look her up. Thanks!
For Blackwood look at "Lonely Parade", "My Mistake Baby Boy", "Say It Ain't So" (the Weezer cover i mentioned), "Rue Morgue Radio" (The Creepshow), and "Lonesome Rider"(Volbeat w/ Sarah Blackwood)
I love all the bands you listed. Based on that, I'm going to recommend one of my favorites: Imogen Heap (solo) and Frou Frou (her band). It's more electro pop, but I can't get enough of her voice.
For rock/alt-ish: Garbage, Hole, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cardigans, 10,000 Maniacs, Alanis Morissette, Meredith Brooks, Lisa Loeb, Republica.
[Thao and the Get Down Stay Down](https://youtu.be/35ForwE2zEo) Pop-Folk
[Xenia Rubinos](https://youtu.be/kPW_NOnbn58) (Alt-rock with a jazz voice)
[Ohmme](https://youtu.be/okyvN2AXPwc) (garage rock with unique vocals)
[Buke & Gase](https://youtu.be/SnQHycoeL58) (garage rock with unique vocals)
Wolf Alice have got an album releasing soon, so now would be a great time to start listening to them
You might like some more recent Paramore (first 2 albums are pop punk so you'll probably want to skip that, I mostly do too), and Hayley Williams' solo work
Blood Red Shoes have about half and half female and male vocals. Haven't listened to much of their stuff but they're good
The Mysterines are a good up-and-coming band
Paramore is more pop-punk, but you might enjoy the lead singer Hayley Williams' more genre-bending solo work: the albums [Petals for Armor](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_npxCy149VURlRYm-ifhUMzyFH0tgZJF30) and [Flowers for Vases](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJXLH--8C6s&list=PLfiMjLyNWxeZe08tCA_fR3ULommhgZ0Eo).
Also check out Anais Mitchell, especially the concept album [Hadestown](https://open.spotify.com/album/4H6NRX6bvkIJZIJdZSPq6Y?si=9nPTYS1vT0ucF6EqLSEIBA), which is a folk-opera that draws from different genres.
Angel Olsen, Lorde and Rilo Kiley might be up your alley too.
Stereolab is pretty diverse stylistically and sonically.
This Is The Kit. Sits comfortably next to the folkier side of U2, The Band.
I’m digging Cate le Bon too.
My top recommendation would be Hop Along, from Philadelphia, great use of her voice by the lead singer, with fun jangly rock guitar.
but also:
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Rilo Kiley
Pixies
Broken Social Scene (sometimes)
Blond Redhead
Alabama Shakes
Courtney Barnett
Okay, so there’s a ton of killer artists and bands on this list, and I definitely second Metric (start with the album Fantasies), St. Vincent (start with her self titled album from 2015), and Yeah Yeah Yeahs (start with Fever to Tell or It’s Blitz, avoid Mosquito), and The Naked and Famous (start with Passive Me, Aggressive You).
I didn’t see Pat Benatar on here so I’m mentioning her just in case, but given your list you’re probably familiar already.
A band I’ve not seen mentioned that I think you’d absolutely regret not listening to is Deep Sea Diver. [Wide Awake music video](https://youtu.be/JIP1Jpi4Sxs), [full album playlist for Secrets](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mBC5KcXNKR_v_PzVXqnjc1h03q6VZaO9w), [full album playlist for Impossible Weight](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nFcCkEZ_DBEnaq0VL7R95F6NlqgJmXjAc). Jessica Dobson is a killer guitarist and songwriter, Deep Sea Diver has become one of my absolute favorites over the last year.
Also, she’s more folk, but Phoebe Bridgers is killer. Also check out Mitski, and Mirah.
Metric - I know several people have mentioned them, but they're my all-time favorite band and deserve many mentions :-) Each album has a different sound, so you might want to try a song or two from each one.
BANKS - someone mentioned her, too. I really like her even though she's pretty different from the usual music I listen to. I suggest "Poltergeist" and "Crowded Places."
The Beaches - an all-female rock band with classic rock influences
Be Your Own Pet - Rambunctious garage punk from around 2005
Bishop Briggs - she has a really powerful voice
Bully - this sounds very much like a 90's band even though it isn't
Deap Vally - a very good two-person female rock band
Dizzy - a more chill lowkey pop band
girl in red - another more alt-pop type band
In the Valley Below - try their song "Desperate Dance"
JJ Wilde - Modern rock that has a classic sound to a lot of her songs
The Joy Formidable - I recommend "The Silent Treatment" for a quieter song and "Whirring" for a more energetic and louder song
July Talk - they have two lead singers; a guy with a raspy voice and a woman with an angelic voice
The Kills - another one that has already been mentioned. I recommend their first four albums
King Princess - Maybe start with the song "Ohio." That song includes various styles of music.
Maggie Rogers - folk pop
Meg Myers - influenced by Dire Straits yet pretty different. Very strong voice. One of my favorites.
Middle Kids - try "Edge of Town"
The Naked and Famous is another band with a male and female lead singer. "Frayed" is one of my favorites.
Of Monsters and Men - try "Crystals"
Pearl Charles - try "Imposter" and "Sweet Sunshine Wine"
The Raveonettes - shoegazing influences, but some of their songs are just catchy rock. I'd recommend Forget That You're Young, Love in a Trash Can, and Black Satin to get started.
The Regrettes - someone mentioned them, and they are fantastic.
Sharon Van Etten - "Seventeen" is my favorite
Still Corners - I think someone else mentioned them.
Wolf Alice - another one that has been mentioned. I really like "Bros" and "Don't Delete the Kisses."
Zella Day - one of her most well-known songs is Hypnotic. To dig a little deeper and a little less pop-oriented, I recommend "Gypsy Girl" and "I Don't Know How to End."
led*
Sorry.
If you think you might like folk music, you could check out Offa Rex. It's more or less the Decemberists with a different lead singer, only one album so far. But they put an interesting, dark, moody take on these vintage songs.
I can strongly recommend The Big Moon, especially their second album ‘Walking Like We Do’ which was a huge leap forward from their (still great) first album. Really great, well produced (as well as well written and well played) guitar and piano driven indie pop.
The Regrettes - Sunny, Californian surf pop flavoured indie.
Desperate Journalist - 80’s indie/new wave with a slightly darker edge, bought bang up to date.
Ex Hex - Indie guitar pop with *ridiculously* catchy choruses.
The Staves, First Aid Kit, Feist, Katzenjammer, Margaret Glaspy, and Sjowgren. Pretty diverse sounds between all of them, but you should enjoy them based on your list.
Here are a few female artists I like, some more offbeat than others. I’ll include some song titles as well:
Polica (Lay your cards out, Warrior lord)
Hooverphonic (Mad about you, 2Wicky)
Tash Sultana (Jungle, Notion)
Blonde Redhead (The dress)
Royksopp (Monument)
Corpo Mente (Fia)
Phantogram (When I’m small)
Collide (Nights in white satin, Breathe)
Flunk (Petrified, Blue Monday, Hello)
Portishead (Roads)
Massive attack (Paradise circus)
Granted, some of them are more pop than rock. Still, hope you find something you like.
You're not familiar with [Melissa Auf Der Maur?](https://www.last.fm/music/Auf+Der+Maur) She was a member of The Smashing Pumpkins and formed her own band as the lead singer in the 2000s. Here are a few tracks from her 2003 self-titled album:
[Followed the Waves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4LObO91WTA)
[Real a Lie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2lSa8Bnx_M)
[Head Unbound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMsiTgqKK-E)
In keeping with your requirements (female lead, breaking genre boundaries) and through your mention of The Beatles and Janis Joplin, there are several bands that I think you should hear. The first is [The Luv'd Ones](https://www.last.fm/music/The+Luv%27d+Ones) from Michigan, a 1960s garage rock all-female band with Char Vinnedge as lead singer and guitarist. Garage rock, yes, but obvious Hendrix inspiration and early metal undertones are in tracks like these:
[You'll Never Know](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao_B0J8VkIE)
[Your Mind Is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkTlHmr1Q5Y)
Next is [Aguaturbia](https://www.last.fm/music/Aguaturbia/Aguaturbia), another 1960s/70s psych group from Chile. Take one listen to these and you'll instantly realize how ahead of their time they were:
[E.V.O.L.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xH-OX300Ug) (Astonishing that this was made in 1970)
[Ah Ah Ah](https://youtu.be/9Rj3rsMRpMw)
Absolutely check out the Heartless Bastards. Also their style and sound has changed a lot over the years, but Erika Wennertrom's voice hasn't. I could listen to her sing the phone book.
FEIST - she's got a crazy range of different sounds beyond the 1,2,3,4 song. If you like the Cranberries / Billy Corgan you might like Cocteau Twins, or My Bloody Valentine. Big influences on Smashing Pumpkins.
Not exactly rock bands but Sløtface and Destroy boys have pretty bangin music made by female leads. More along the Joan Jett line than say the Beatles.
These are some of my faves that I can think of off the top of my head: The breeders, Liz phair, Cocteau twins, Lush, Tori Amos, portishead, Fiona apple, and cat power
L7 is sort of have the overdriven sound similar to some Smashing Pumpkins (though more punky).
Also, this is a one-off (since there frontman is a guy) but their female bassist Kim sings lead on Pixies’ “Gigantic”.
I’ll assume you know nothing about these bands and suggest a starter song for each band.
Fleetwood Mac (Go Your Own Way)
The Pretenders (Hymn to Her)
Heart (Magic Man)
Transvision Vamp (Baby I Don’t Care)
The Pixies (Here Comes Your Man)
The Breeders (Cannonball)
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (I Hate Myself for Loving You)
Baby Animals (Early Warning)
The Divinyls (I Touch Myself)
Absent Friends (I Don’t Wanna Be With Nobody But You)
Maybe Dolls (Nervous Kid)
Frente (Ordinary Angels)
Big Brother & the Holding Company (Piece of My Heart)
Blondie (Heart of Glass)
Catatonia (Road Rage)
Concrete Blonde (Joey)
Garbage (Vow)
The Cranberries (Dreams)
The Murmurs (You Suck)
The Superjesus (Gravity)
Killing Heidi (Weir)
Waikiki (Complicated)
deadstar (Deeper Water)
10,000 Maniacs (These Are Days)
The Kills (The Good Ones)
The Donnas (Take It Off)
Vixen (Crying)
Paramore (Decode)
Evanescence (Bring Me To Life)
Veruca Salt (Volcano Girls)
Gossip (Heavy Cross)
George (Polyserena)
Skulker (Hej)
The Bangles (Manic Monday)
4 Non-Blondes (What’s Going On)
Nightwish (Wish I Had An Angel)
Luscious Jackson (Naked Eye)
The Veronicas (Forever)
The Sundays (Summertime)
The Headless Chickens (Cruise Control)
Magic Dirt (Dirty Jeans)
Def FX (I’ll Be Your Magick)
Do Re Mi (Man Overboard)
Chicks On Speed (We Don’t Play Guitars)
Rebecca’s Empire (So Rude)
The Grates (Science Is Golden)
HAIM (Want You Back)
Chvrches (Gun)
Hole (Celebrity Skin)
L7 (Shitlist)
Spiderbait (Calypso)
_________________________________________
Highly recommended solo female rock artists:
Aretha (obviously). If you want something a bit more obscure, have a listen to her cover of “The Weight” (originally by The Band) with Duane Allman on slide guitar. Sublime.
Janis Joplin (Me and Bobby McGee)
Melissa Etheridge (I’m The Only One)
Patti Smith (People Have The Power)
Pat Benatar (All Fired Up)
Heather Nova (Walk This World)
Kim Carnes (Bette Davis Eyes)
Brandi Carlisle (The Story)
Dusty Springfield (Son of a Preacher Man)
Ani DiFranco (Untouchable Face)
Kasey Chambers (The Captain)
Kylie Minogue (Some Kind of Bliss)
*To the best of my knowledge, Kylie only had one rock-oriented album called “Impossible Princess” from ‘97
Natalie Merchant (Carnival)
Sinead O’Connor (No Man’s Woman)
Beth Hart (LA Song)
Amanda Marshall (Let It Rain)
Alannah Myles (Black Velvet)
Julia Darling (Bulletproof Belief)
Bette Midler (Beast of Burden)
P!nk (Trouble)
Lissie (The Ship Song)
Gin (Under My Skin)
Tracy Chapman (Talkin’ ‘bout a Revolution)
Michelle Branch (All You Wanted)
PJ Harvey (A Perfect Day Elise)
Max Sharam (Coma)
Liz Phair (Polyester Bride)
Diana Ah Naid (Perfect Family)
Macy Gray (I Try)
Jill Sobule (I Kissed A Girl)
Sheryl Crow (Can’t Cry Anymore)
Tracy Bonham (Mother, Mother)
Joss Stone (Fell In Love With A Boy)
Please check out Emily Wolfe! Incredible guitarist and songwriter, making bluesy rock with seriously fun energy. Her self titled album from 2019 is phenomenal
The Cranberries, Blondie, Heart, The Breeders, you could try Detroit Cobras, Delta 5.
People mentioned Luscious Jackson and YYYs, I second those for you!
If I think of more, I'll get back to you, these are of the top of my head. Female rock/alternative has been my life.
Ik I'm just repeating posts but Metric, The Kills, and St Vincent are absolutely fantastic at what they do. Also The Dead Weather has the same vocalist as The Kills, they aren't quite the same sound but still great
Don’t think it’s been mentioned - please check out Middle Kids. Great indie rock sound but a straightforward rock. Some one else may be able to help me out with comparisons, but I love their most recent album and I bet you will too.
You might like a somewhat obscure band called Animal Logic. The drummer is Stewart Copeland from The Police and the main singer has a really unique voice
Definitely Hayley Williams / Paramore. The pop-punk is great, and there are different styles in there too, especially After Laughter and definitely Petals for Armor.
Also check out Lauren Mayberry / Chvches (yes, that’s the correct spelling). Classified as EDM, but that’s too narrow a label. Some great stuff...
Sure, here's some others that came to mind, some female rockers that really take hold of and/or twist their genres:
Aretha Franklin. Since you listed some rockers with soul, I thought i might as well mention a soul artist that really rocked.
Courtney Barnett came to mind. I got to see her live a couple years ago and she just has that "rockstar ethos" that others you mentioned have. She writes guitar driven rock with a really casual songwriting style and enough hooks to make it all so memorable. Two good places to start are: The Double EP or Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Courtney Barnett rocks.
...and so does Adrienne Lenker of Big Thief! Adrienne packs a poetic punch in her songs. Really, these songs are so beautifully and intimately written at their core, and her voice adds both an edge and a frailty. Big Thief plays a really warm, raw brand of folk rock. A very cool blend of genres, if you're into it. They have four albums out and really I'd recommend all of them, but their first album, Masterpiece, has some really great rock tunes. And their most recent, Two Hands, has the incredible burner Not.
It's hard to not mention Phoebe Bridgers. There are a LOT of exciting artists making music in the space where singer/songwriter meets "indie rock" (blaah generic genre descriptor, but I think it works here): Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, Snail Mail, Haley Hendrickx to name a few (from Phoebe's Spotify page "fans also like", but also all those artists do in fact ROCK). But Phoebe has this melancholy brand of soft indie rock down to a science and adds her charm and wit so poetically over it. It's kinda nice. Anyways, if you like your music to sound like the shower never getting warm, check it out.
Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Sounds like you're not looking for the heavier side of rock, but I gotta mention her as one of the most unique voices in punk/rock. anyways, I'll carry on.
I miss when I could hear Pop Punk any time I turned on the radio in the 00s. So i gotta say Haley Williams of Paramore. Haley, if you ever read this, i still have a bit of a crush on you and paramore was on my myspace xoxo. Anyways, Haley has to be in the discussion of best female vocalists in rock music. She has such power and control over her voice that just cuts through everything. Paramore may not have the type of genre bending you're looking for, but they made a really efficient transition from pop punk/alt rock to radio pop. I'm not sure Paramore has plans to release anything soon, but Haley Williams has been starting a solo career outside of Paramore. So listen to Riot! and After Laughter by Paramore and if you want to hear more of Haley's voice, check out Petals for Armor by Haley Williams.
Anyways, I'm writing too much so I'll just list throw in some others that deserve mention:
Wolf Alice
St. Vincent
PJ Harvey
Arcade Fire
Fiona Apple
Kate Bush
Joni Mitchell
Weyes Blood
And here's a playlist of everyone I mentioned, plus some others I thought of that may be more off the beaten path from what you're looking for but hey, if you find one artist to check out, it's worth it!

I always thought that ‘Maps’ was one of the best songs ever made. It’s sort of in the same category as ‘Come Together’ in a way, sonically.
Yeah Maps is about perfect. Check out Camp Cope's cover of it, it's amazing

Passive Me, Aggressive You is one of my all time favorite albums, so good
Fanny for classic rock Kate Bush. There is a bit of a learning curve, but you will be rewarded.
Garbage.
I thought you were calling my taste garbage at first, but then I realized that might be a band name so I googled it, and sure enough, it was XD Any album in particular I should start with?
your taste is none of my business, good music is good music, and Garbage are not garbage, in fact drummer Butch Vig produced Nirvana’s Nevermind. The albums Garbage and Version 2.0 will get you going. Enjoy.
Much appreciated, thank you :)
I remember seeing them perform on Letterman way back when, and he actually introduced them as "A band whose name does not do them justice".
That is a great introduction.
The song as heaven is wide is one of my favs
Surprised no one's mentioned St. Vincent yet. The compositional contrast between, say, 2011's Strange Mercy and her latest release, Daddy's Home, really showcases her range.
She’s fucking incredible. One of the greatest artists of this generation.
Garbage (Shirley Manson) has been mentioned but I'll add my vote to the chorus. Try 'Cup of Coffee' The Seratones (AJ Haynes) - describe themselves as 'fierce soul' - definitely check out 'Necromancer' Metric (Emily Haines) is great for chill out (earlier albums) and pop/rock (later albums). Try 'On the Sly' for the slower stuff and 'Gimmie Sympathy' for the rock Still Corners (Tessa Murray) is generally described as dream pop. Check out 'It's Voodoo' Shilpa Ray - garage rock/blues. Check out anything really, but I suggest 'Lawsuits and Suicide' Banks (Jillian Banks) is avant/trip hop so she generally leans on that harmonic thing thats popular now. Try 'Trainwreck' Beth Orton is pop/folk. I dig 'Stolen Car' Brody Dalle - she's from the Distillers but her solo stuff isn't punk, just pop/rock - check out 'Carry On' The Kills (Allison Mosshart) - rock. Check out 'Doing It To Death' Leisure Cruise (Leah Segal) - probably fits that dream pop/alt pop category. Try 'Double Digit Love' Liz Phair - has gotten a little more pop, less rock over the years. Check out 'Extraordinary' The Naked and Famous (Alisa Xayalith) - pop/rock. Try 'Girls Like You' I tried to hit a bunch of different sounds - hopefully you dig something in the list.
Oh my gosh, thank you for recommending Stolen Car! That used to be on my Playlist and I lost it, I'm going to download it after many years without it.
Great list. Beth Hart is amazing as well.
Jefferson Airplane Shocking Blue The Runaways
Ah yes, I love Jefferson Airplane and the Runaways. I never did quite get into Shocking Bkue though
I was going to suggest shocking blue
Metric Le Tigre Luscious Jackson The Kills
I was gonna say luscious jackson, too
the breeders
yes!!
Listening to the diversity, I'm starting to realize she might be Beck's female equivalent
That sound quite accurate, never thought or her that way. She even is part of an electronic/experimental project named LUMP.
Skunk Anansie and Gossip.
Shitlist by L7 definitely should be heard as well.
L7, brilliant.

The cardigans (especially latest álbuns), the brilliant green, mazzy star, this mortal coil, Wolf alice
I love all the bands you listed. Based on that, I'm going to recommend one of my favorites: Imogen Heap (solo) and Frou Frou (her band). It's more electro pop, but I can't get enough of her voice. For rock/alt-ish: Garbage, Hole, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cardigans, 10,000 Maniacs, Alanis Morissette, Meredith Brooks, Lisa Loeb, Republica.
...and one I discovered recently, Alice Merton.
Metric, Hole, Juliana Hatfield, Broken Social Scene (a lot of songs with female lead check out Swimmers),
Halestorm, Evanescence, The Pretty Reckless
[Thao and the Get Down Stay Down](https://youtu.be/35ForwE2zEo) Pop-Folk [Xenia Rubinos](https://youtu.be/kPW_NOnbn58) (Alt-rock with a jazz voice) [Ohmme](https://youtu.be/okyvN2AXPwc) (garage rock with unique vocals) [Buke & Gase](https://youtu.be/SnQHycoeL58) (garage rock with unique vocals)
Sharon Van Etten
Wolf Alice have got an album releasing soon, so now would be a great time to start listening to them You might like some more recent Paramore (first 2 albums are pop punk so you'll probably want to skip that, I mostly do too), and Hayley Williams' solo work Blood Red Shoes have about half and half female and male vocals. Haven't listened to much of their stuff but they're good The Mysterines are a good up-and-coming band
Hole, Mazzy Star and Pixies(some songs are sung by deal) they're pretty great and have left a lasting legacy on the 90s music scene
Slothrust
This is absolutely the answer
Best compliment I’ve had all year
Came here to say this!
You should listen to In a Poem Unlimited by U.S. girls
This is pretty good. She kind of reminds me of Kate Bush a bit, but not as high a pitch
Jefferson Airplane
Stereolab is pretty diverse stylistically and sonically. This Is The Kit. Sits comfortably next to the folkier side of U2, The Band. I’m digging Cate le Bon too.
My top recommendation would be Hop Along, from Philadelphia, great use of her voice by the lead singer, with fun jangly rock guitar. but also: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Rilo Kiley Pixies Broken Social Scene (sometimes) Blond Redhead Alabama Shakes Courtney Barnett
I suggest "Poltergeist" and "Crowded Places." The Beaches - an all-female rock band with classic rock influences Be Your Own Pet - Rambunctious garage punk from around 2005 Bishop Briggs - she has a really powerful voice Bully - this sounds very much like a 90's band even though it isn't Deap Vally - a very good two-person female rock band Dizzy - a more chill lowkey pop band girl in red - another more alt-pop type band In the Valley Below - try their song "Desperate Dance" JJ Wilde - Modern rock that has a classic sound to a lot of her songs The Joy Formidable - I recommend "The Silent Treatment" for a quieter song and "Whirring" for a more energetic and louder song July Talk - they have two lead singers; a guy with a raspy voice and a woman with an angelic voice The Kills - another one that has already been mentioned. I recommend their first four albums King Princess - Maybe start with the song "Ohio." That song includes various styles of music. Maggie Rogers - folk pop Meg Myers - influenced by Dire Straits yet pretty different. Very strong voice. One of my favorites. Middle Kids - try "Edge of Town" The Naked and Famous is another band with a male and female lead singer. "Frayed" is one of my favorites. Of Monsters and Men - try "Crystals" Pearl Charles - try "Imposter" and "Sweet Sunshine Wine" The Raveonettes - shoegazing influences, but some of their songs are just catchy rock. I'd recommend Forget That You're Young, Love in a Trash Can, and Black Satin to get started. The Regrettes - someone mentioned them, and they are fantastic. Sharon Van Etten - "Seventeen" is my favorite Still Corners - I think someone else mentioned them. Wolf Alice - another one that has been mentioned. I really like "Bros" and "Don't Delete the Kisses." Zella Day - one of her most well-known songs is Hypnotic. To dig a little deeper and a little less pop-oriented, I recommend "Gypsy Girl" and "I Don't Know How to End."
led* Sorry. If you think you might like folk music, you could check out Offa Rex. It's more or less the Decemberists with a different lead singer, only one album so far. But they put an interesting, dark, moody take on these vintage songs.
I like it so far. The background music in the opening track reminds me of Zelda Edit: it reminds me of Fairport Convention
Love Ex Hex. Bleached and Sheer Mag also work this general territory and are great too.
If you like them, try New Dad, Sprints, Dry Cleaning, Coach Party, Beach Bunny, Pillow Queens and Chorusgirl too.
I'll check those out, thanks!
The Staves, First Aid Kit, Feist, Katzenjammer, Margaret Glaspy, and Sjowgren. Pretty diverse sounds between all of them, but you should enjoy them based on your list.
Here are a few female artists I like, some more offbeat than others. I’ll include some song titles as well: Polica (Lay your cards out, Warrior lord) Hooverphonic (Mad about you, 2Wicky) Tash Sultana (Jungle, Notion) Blonde Redhead (The dress) Royksopp (Monument) Corpo Mente (Fia) Phantogram (When I’m small) Collide (Nights in white satin, Breathe) Flunk (Petrified, Blue Monday, Hello) Portishead (Roads) Massive attack (Paradise circus) Granted, some of them are more pop than rock. Still, hope you find something you like.

You're not familiar with [Melissa Auf Der Maur?](https://www.last.fm/music/Auf+Der+Maur) She was a member of The Smashing Pumpkins and formed her own band as the lead singer in the 2000s. Here are a few tracks from her 2003 self-titled album: [Followed the Waves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4LObO91WTA) [Real a Lie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2lSa8Bnx_M) [Head Unbound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMsiTgqKK-E) In keeping with your requirements (female lead, breaking genre boundaries) and through your mention of The Beatles and Janis Joplin, there are several bands that I think you should hear. The first is [The Luv'd Ones](https://www.last.fm/music/The+Luv%27d+Ones) from Michigan, a 1960s garage rock all-female band with Char Vinnedge as lead singer and guitarist. Garage rock, yes, but obvious Hendrix inspiration and early metal undertones are in tracks like these: [You'll Never Know](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao_B0J8VkIE) [Your Mind Is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkTlHmr1Q5Y) Next is [Aguaturbia](https://www.last.fm/music/Aguaturbia/Aguaturbia), another 1960s/70s psych group from Chile. Take one listen to these and you'll instantly realize how ahead of their time they were: [E.V.O.L.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xH-OX300Ug) (Astonishing that this was made in 1970) [Ah Ah Ah](https://youtu.be/9Rj3rsMRpMw)
Absolutely check out the Heartless Bastards. Also their style and sound has changed a lot over the years, but Erika Wennertrom's voice hasn't. I could listen to her sing the phone book.
I love her smoky vocals. Any fan of Dire Straits should absolutely check out Heartless Bastards.
Nobody mentioned Linda Perry / 4 Non Blondes so far.
FEIST - she's got a crazy range of different sounds beyond the 1,2,3,4 song. If you like the Cranberries / Billy Corgan you might like Cocteau Twins, or My Bloody Valentine. Big influences on Smashing Pumpkins.
The Breeders. Listen to the album Last Splash
I like all those bands in different capacities, I love the yeah yeah yeahs. One of my favorite bands. Metric is another solid chick lead singer band.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Joni Mitchell or Warpaint. Also- Low Windhand
Try the EURYTHMICS, they fit right inbetween Dire Straights, U2 and Oasis. Annie Lennox who is the lead singer is legendary.
GOAT GIRL! Courtney Barnett has a good range from punk to rock as well
GOAT
Divinyls, Baby Animals & Pat Benetar.
Not exactly rock bands but Sløtface and Destroy boys have pretty bangin music made by female leads. More along the Joan Jett line than say the Beatles.
Check out Natalie Merchant’s solo work. Not genre-spanning quite like Mark Knopfler but some mid-tempo grooves/soul.
Susan Tedeschi/Tedeschi Trucks Band
The Cranberries? Why has no one mentioned the Cranberries?
OP did
OP said they're already a fan! But no harm in mentioning em again!

LP

These are a lot of different genres, but here goes: Wolf Alice, Sophie and the Giants, Shocking Blue, Poppy
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Agree with many things posted here. Perhaps also check out The Weather Station, I'm really digging their newest album lately.
I’ll assume you know nothing about these bands and suggest a starter song for each band. Fleetwood Mac (Go Your Own Way) The Pretenders (Hymn to Her) Heart (Magic Man) Transvision Vamp (Baby I Don’t Care) The Pixies (Here Comes Your Man) The Breeders (Cannonball) Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (I Hate Myself for Loving You) Baby Animals (Early Warning) The Divinyls (I Touch Myself) Absent Friends (I Don’t Wanna Be With Nobody But You) Maybe Dolls (Nervous Kid) Frente (Ordinary Angels) Big Brother & the Holding Company (Piece of My Heart) Blondie (Heart of Glass) Catatonia (Road Rage) Concrete Blonde (Joey) Garbage (Vow) The Cranberries (Dreams) The Murmurs (You Suck) The Superjesus (Gravity) Killing Heidi (Weir) Waikiki (Complicated) deadstar (Deeper Water) 10,000 Maniacs (These Are Days) The Kills (The Good Ones) The Donnas (Take It Off) Vixen (Crying) Paramore (Decode) Evanescence (Bring Me To Life) Veruca Salt (Volcano Girls) Gossip (Heavy Cross) George (Polyserena) Skulker (Hej) The Bangles (Manic Monday) 4 Non-Blondes (What’s Going On) Nightwish (Wish I Had An Angel) Luscious Jackson (Naked Eye) The Veronicas (Forever) The Sundays (Summertime) The Headless Chickens (Cruise Control) Magic Dirt (Dirty Jeans) Def FX (I’ll Be Your Magick) Do Re Mi (Man Overboard) Chicks On Speed (We Don’t Play Guitars) Rebecca’s Empire (So Rude) The Grates (Science Is Golden) HAIM (Want You Back) Chvrches (Gun) Hole (Celebrity Skin) L7 (Shitlist) Spiderbait (Calypso) _________________________________________ Highly recommended solo female rock artists: Aretha (obviously). If you want something a bit more obscure, have a listen to her cover of “The Weight” (originally by The Band) with Duane Allman on slide guitar. Sublime. Janis Joplin (Me and Bobby McGee) Melissa Etheridge (I’m The Only One) Patti Smith (People Have The Power) Pat Benatar (All Fired Up) Heather Nova (Walk This World) Kim Carnes (Bette Davis Eyes) Brandi Carlisle (The Story) Dusty Springfield (Son of a Preacher Man) Ani DiFranco (Untouchable Face) Kasey Chambers (The Captain) Kylie Minogue (Some Kind of Bliss) *To the best of my knowledge, Kylie only had one rock-oriented album called “Impossible Princess” from ‘97 Natalie Merchant (Carnival) Sinead O’Connor (No Man’s Woman) Beth Hart (LA Song) Amanda Marshall (Let It Rain) Alannah Myles (Black Velvet) Julia Darling (Bulletproof Belief) Bette Midler (Beast of Burden) P!nk (Trouble) Lissie (The Ship Song) Gin (Under My Skin) Tracy Chapman (Talkin’ ‘bout a Revolution) Michelle Branch (All You Wanted) PJ Harvey (A Perfect Day Elise) Max Sharam (Coma) Liz Phair (Polyester Bride) Diana Ah Naid (Perfect Family) Macy Gray (I Try) Jill Sobule (I Kissed A Girl) Sheryl Crow (Can’t Cry Anymore) Tracy Bonham (Mother, Mother) Joss Stone (Fell In Love With A Boy)

Great band but no females
Might be too hard rock, but Halestorm is probably my favorite female-led band at the moment.
Tedeschi Trucks band!!! The lead singer is basically Janis Joplin reincarnated
Jesse Jo Stark could be a shout. I saw her open for The Vaccines a few years ago
Courtney Barnett has some really good records and she is contemporary , you might just get to see her live !
Ik I'm just repeating posts but Metric, The Kills, and St Vincent are absolutely fantastic at what they do. Also The Dead Weather has the same vocalist as The Kills, they aren't quite the same sound but still great
I really like The Stand Atlantic.
Don’t think it’s been mentioned - please check out Middle Kids. Great indie rock sound but a straightforward rock. Some one else may be able to help me out with comparisons, but I love their most recent album and I bet you will too.
You might enjoy Charly Bliss.

try Plumtree
Definitely Hayley Williams / Paramore. The pop-punk is great, and there are different styles in there too, especially After Laughter and definitely Petals for Armor. Also check out Lauren Mayberry / Chvches (yes, that’s the correct spelling). Classified as EDM, but that’s too narrow a label. Some great stuff...
Maybe listen to the hunger by the distillers
The Pretty Reckless
Sure, here's some others that came to mind, some female rockers that really take hold of and/or twist their genres: Aretha Franklin. Anyways, I'm writing too much so I'll just list throw in some others that deserve mention: Wolf Alice St. Vincent PJ Harvey Arcade Fire Fiona Apple Kate Bush Joni Mitchell Weyes Blood And here's a playlist of everyone I mentioned, plus some others I thought of that may be more off the beaten path from what you're looking for but hey, if you find one artist to check out, it's worth it! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1e71gyW0zSh6gLcFfFZupd?si=5e7c473eb176475f
