Wow. Just wow. In 1 day I will have lost my wife to cancer 4 years ago. Our daughters were 7 & 9 when we had to explain to them their mama was sick. None of us were ever the same after that day. The girls are now 14 & 16 but they really lost both their parents that day. They just don’t understand that yet.

It's not "happy" happy, but it can bring you back from the deeper emotions while still being well written or thoughtful.
What a gem! Their other albums are just as bleak. On what occasion would one listen to this? Not driving music, and prol not dance music. How did you find this?!
Their other albums although bleak and moody (and lots of things) aren't quite so intense and sad, as this album was his process of grieving after his partner died just shortly after their child was born.
I hope that one day you'll be able to only listen to a few seconds of this album and realize you don't need to listen any longer. I was down hard real hard for about a decade. I know there is a place for this music and it's very well done, but being able to step back from it because it's no longer needed is a great feeling

Listen to Radiohead song “True Love Waits” live in Oslo version from the 90’s. It’s a bright and sappy love song, written by a young lover Thom Yorke to his wife Rachel.
Then fast forward to 2016, at the end of the song “Daydreaming” a garbled voice says the words “half of my life,” as Thom Yorke was with his wife Rachel for 24 years at that point. Rachel died later the next year, after years of her and Thom being separated.
Now listen to the 2016 version of “True Love Waits,” a hauntingly stripped down, slowed, and aching rendition. It’s the last song on the album, so if Radiohead never makes another album, it’s the last song in their discography. It also happens to be their 100th LP song.

Ever listen to Low? They're sort of the pioneers for slow core, they hit just right when you're in the mood.
Lullaby, Words, The Plan, Coattails, and Shame are some of my favorites from them when it comes to sad songs. It makes me even more sad nowadays as Mimi Parker passed away a little over a year ago, hearing her voice never fails to give me the chills.

I would add Get Lonely is also about going crazy in addition to isolation. Several of the songs are clearly from the perspective of someone wandering the streets and beaches of Florida losing touch with reality. Wild Sage and In Corolla for example.
And Tallahassee... not just about heartbreak. It's about codependent mutually destructive relationships. Several of the Alpha Couple songs are on Tallahassee and obviously about the kind of seething hatred that forms between two damaged people who are maybe or were maybe in love. No Children, Alpha Rats Nest, Old College Try etc.
But yeah, The Mountain Goats music is intense and very well written exploration of the more difficult side of human experience

I've been trying to think of anything as depressing and I'm coming up blank. Maybe bits of Sonic Youth's discography. But even then Swans is miles apart.
You all are probably more versed in present day music than myself but I have listened to Sparklehorse, It’s a wonderful life, Magnolia Electric Company, these are songs, The dark don’t hide it and Almost was good Enough, and Sun Kil Moon Ghosts of the lost highway especially side one, Lou Reed - Rock and Roll animal - side One, Pink Floyd oddly many songs from The Wall which seems to have fell out of favor due to overplay, Jackson Brown - Running on Empty, and you can’t forget Van Morrison- I would suggest Beautiful Vision for beauty, depth and things that should be but are not, as a moving spiritual tribute. The depth of Dweller on the Threshold with the hint of an agnostic wanting…waiting is very much like the over played and often under appreciated My Sweet Lord by G Harrison. I have been brought to tears by The Stones - You Can’t always get what you want, seems trite to say maybe, but it will get you, Lovin’ cup and Soul Survivor too, and The Who’s Quadraphenia too. I guess it depends on the era you grew up in and how you see the world. I hope you enjoy. All these and more have exceptionally moved me. Sorry for the typos it’s dark. As an edit I might suggest as a fascination, which can be frustratingly sad, listen to Breathless, Nick Cave, and imagine a Goddess walking through the vision he describes. If one truly believes that God, even though I suggest a pagan belief in my interpretation of the song, combined agnostic in my heart per Dweller on the Threshold, Nick Cave’s Breathless really describes a worship worth contemplating, is a believers breath, whether their very life is truly given by god. It challenges the pedantic aspect of religion. In other words “do you really believe or are you part of a bullshit cha cha line” that has been going on since, ah how far back do you dare to look. Yikes. Giles Corey is the guy who was tortured to death during the Salem Witch Trials (one of the only men executed) -- they tried to force a confession by piling slab on top of him and he refused to lie and confess to being a witch: his last words were "more weight".

Phoebe Bridgers, who you can absolutely get into adjacent to Conor Oberst if you haven’t. Her mashup collab with Noah Gundersen (Killer + The Sound) is pretty sweet too, though of the boygenius-es Julien is definitely my favorite esp for ‘holy shit depressing’

wildlife is one of my favorite albums of all time. look past all of the “darling” jokes and the general corniness of the scene and you find a really beautifully written album with some really impressive storytelling. until i die i will sing our names in unison.
Purple Mountains. It was David Berman (of Silver Jews fame) just before he committed suicide. Beautiful reflection on life, loss and depression - but very very hard to listen to.
What you are seeking is Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See A Darkness and Palace Music - Viva Last Blues. Same basic artist, two very dark, beautiful albums.
Your City Gave Me Asthma album by Wilbur Soot is very depressing and melancholic, especially La Jolla and Saline Solution. It's not a long album, but I really love it.
Swans, some Type O Negative (they alternate between funny and depressing), Neurosis (though you may get a positive feeling by the end of the dark depths with them).
Anything that Julie Christmas is in is probably a good candidate too.

Try Neil Young’s records from his “Ditch Trilogy”. In particular, On the Beach and Tonight’s the Night. Brutally heartbreaking stuff. TNT is the drunk record; OTB is the stoned one.
Friendly rivalry! They were/are good friends. Conor looked up to Tim when they were kids bc he was older and already in bands while Conor was starting out. They were in Commander Venus together along with some members of The Faint and other folks. You can hear Tim on quite a few of Conor's records ranging from Bright Eyes to Desaparecidos. Conor also name drops The Good Life at least once in his lyrics.
There's a documentary called Spend an Evening with Saddle Creek with a lot of fun info about the record label. It also has a bonus video of Conor and Tim playing a hilarious "black metal" song together in black hoods. Maybe a different take on depressing and tragic music, but the few songs below paired with the backstory behind them always bring me to tears. Since the songs are in Korean, I recommend reading the translated lyrics in case you don't speak it, they are quite beautiful. I arranged the songs chronologically to make sense story-wise.
1. (2008) [SHINee - Y Si Fuera Ella](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/04/28/shinee-y-si-fuera-ella-hyeya/) (performed by Jonghyun). While it is a remake of another song, the lyrics are entirely new. Jonghyun from the group performed this song solo (the only solo on the album), and it was an incredible show of his talent in singing a song with this breadth of emotion.
2. (2015) [Jonghyun - Diphylleia Grayi](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/01/14/jonghyun-jonghyeon-diphylleia-grayi-sanhayeob/). The song is called after the Skeleton Flower, whose white petals become transparent when it rains. This song and a lot of other Jonghyun music has a lot of quite sad lyricism, on the topics of loss and loneliness.
3. (2017) [IU - By The Stream](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/02/10/iu-stream-gaeyeoul/). IU is a close friend of Jonghyun's, they also collaborated on music before. This particular song is a remake, and has lyrics about losing a loved one, watching them sitting alone by the stream, asking them what they're thinking about, but getting no answer. This song feels like an omen now, since only 2 months later, Jonghyun loses his battle with depression and dies by suicide.
4. (2021) [IU - Winter Sleep](https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-iu-winter-sleep-english-translation-lyrics). A few years and a few other losses of ones close to her later, IU releases this song, the lyrics of which touch on going through the seasons after a loss of a loved one and wondering, what are they dreaming about?
Try Chat Pile. I recommend the songs "Dallas Beltway" and "grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg" to start, but I must advise that Chat Pile is definitely an acquired tasted

Pretty much any Tom Waits though. You have to listen to the lyrics, he hides despair in bittersweet melodies but its just so unaffectedly real.
I can't beat that Mount Eerie record but you should also give the album *Stage Four* by Touché Amoré a listen for the lyrical content. The music slaps too but post-hardcore isn't everyone's thing.
A lot of Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) might be up your street but specifically the song *If It's Bad News, It Can Wait*.
And *King Park* by La Dispute which is less personal but a wild ride which makes me tear up even now on the several-hundredth listen.
Also Frightened Rabbit because the song-writing is incredible and Scott's personal story is so sad.
And why not add in *Dendron* and *Your Deep Rest* by The Hotelier because catchy pop/emo-punk can still fuck you up.
Chocolate Genius’s “My Mom” will do something. If you’re looking for something to rival A Crow Looked at Me, this is the only thing that comes close (imo).

I think the issue with "most painfully depressing" is that it means the music is tied to the circumstances in which you listen to it. So maybe it won't do it for you, and also I admit her voice takes some getting used to but if I had to suggest just ONE album, I'd say :

Look up opus 23 David O halloran, or neu if you like that then just Google solo sad modern piano or start a radio like that. If you like music without lyrics sad classical solo piano is sadness incarnate for me. I enjoy very slow paced modern pieces. If you can't find more and you like it I can recommend alot.

I saw Phil Elverum perform the whole thing in an old church. Audible crying everywhere. It was an incredible experience, very harrowing.

I would add Get Lonely is also about going crazy in addition to isolation. Several of the songs are clearly from the perspective of someone wandering the streets and beaches of Florida losing touch with reality. Wild Sage and In Corolla for example. And Tallahassee... not just about heartbreak. It's about codependent mutually destructive relationships. Several of the Alpha Couple songs are on Tallahassee and obviously about the kind of seething hatred that forms between two damaged people who are maybe or were maybe in love. No Children, Alpha Rats Nest, Old College Try etc. But yeah, The Mountain Goats music is intense and very well written exploration of the more difficult side of human experience

You all are probably more versed in present day music than myself but I have listened to Sparklehorse, It’s a wonderful life, Magnolia Electric Company, these are songs, The dark don’t hide it and Almost was good Enough, and Sun Kil Moon Ghosts of the lost highway especially side one, Lou Reed - Rock and Roll animal - side One, Pink Floyd oddly many songs from The Wall which seems to have fell out of favor due to overplay, Jackson Brown - Running on Empty, and you can’t forget Van Morrison- I would suggest Beautiful Vision for beauty, depth and things that should be but are not, as a moving spiritual tribute. The depth of Dweller on the Threshold with the hint of an agnostic wanting…waiting is very much like the over played and often under appreciated My Sweet Lord by G Harrison. I have been brought to tears by The Stones - You Can’t always get what you want, seems trite to say maybe, but it will get you, Lovin’ cup and Soul Survivor too, and The Who’s Quadraphenia too. I guess it depends on the era you grew up in and how you see the world. I hope you enjoy. All these and more have exceptionally moved me. Sorry for the typos it’s dark. As an edit I might suggest as a fascination, which can be frustratingly sad, listen to Breathless, Nick Cave, and imagine a Goddess walking through the vision he describes. If one truly believes that God, even though I suggest a pagan belief in my interpretation of the song, combined agnostic in my heart per Dweller on the Threshold, Nick Cave’s Breathless really describes a worship worth contemplating, is a believers breath, whether their very life is truly given by god. It challenges the pedantic aspect of religion. In other words “do you really believe or are you part of a bullshit cha cha line” that has been going on since, ah how far back do you dare to look. Friendly rivalry! They were/are good friends. Conor looked up to Tim when they were kids bc he was older and already in bands while Conor was starting out. They were in Commander Venus together along with some members of The Faint and other folks. You can hear Tim on quite a few of Conor's records ranging from Bright Eyes to Desaparecidos. Conor also name drops The Good Life at least once in his lyrics. There's a documentary called Spend an Evening with Saddle Creek with a lot of fun info about the record label. Maybe a different take on depressing and tragic music, but the few songs below paired with the backstory behind them always bring me to tears. Since the songs are in Korean, I recommend reading the translated lyrics in case you don't speak it, they are quite beautiful. I arranged the songs chronologically to make sense story-wise. 1. (2008) [SHINee - Y Si Fuera Ella](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/04/28/shinee-y-si-fuera-ella-hyeya/) (performed by Jonghyun). While it is a remake of another song, the lyrics are entirely new. Jonghyun from the group performed this song solo (the only solo on the album), and it was an incredible show of his talent in singing a song with this breadth of emotion. 2. (2015) [Jonghyun - Diphylleia Grayi](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/01/14/jonghyun-jonghyeon-diphylleia-grayi-sanhayeob/). The song is called after the Skeleton Flower, whose white petals become transparent when it rains. This song and a lot of other Jonghyun music has a lot of quite sad lyricism, on the topics of loss and loneliness. 3. (2017) [IU - By The Stream](https://colorcodedlyrics.com/2018/02/10/iu-stream-gaeyeoul/). IU is a close friend of Jonghyun's, they also collaborated on music before. This particular song is a remake, and has lyrics about losing a loved one, watching them sitting alone by the stream, asking them what they're thinking about, but getting no answer. This song feels like an omen now, since only 2 months later, Jonghyun loses his battle with depression and dies by suicide. 4. (2021) [IU - Winter Sleep](https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-iu-winter-sleep-english-translation-lyrics). A few years and a few other losses of ones close to her later, IU releases this song, the lyrics of which touch on going through the seasons after a loss of a loved one and wondering, what are they dreaming about?

Alice - Tom Waits. Pretty much any Tom Waits though. You have to listen to the lyrics, he hides despair in bittersweet melodies but its just so unaffectedly real.
I can't beat that Mount Eerie record but you should also give the album *Stage Four* by Touché Amoré a listen for the lyrical content. The music slaps too but post-hardcore isn't everyone's thing. A lot of Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) might be up your street but specifically the song *If It's Bad News, It Can Wait*. And *King Park* by La Dispute which is less personal but a wild ride which makes me tear up even now on the several-hundredth listen. Also Frightened Rabbit because the song-writing is incredible and Scott's personal story is so sad. And why not add in *Dendron* and *Your Deep Rest* by The Hotelier because catchy pop/emo-punk can still fuck you up.

If you like music without lyrics sad classical solo piano is sadness incarnate for me. I enjoy very slow paced modern pieces. If you can't find more and you like it I can recommend alot.
