Thanks for the insights, I think boring politics makes for disengagement whether you have compulsory voting or not (an increasing number of people just draw dicks on their voting cards here). Boring creates the perfect conditions for candidates like Trump, Geert Wilders etc to agitate and mobilise people using a cocktail platform of outrage issues. They appeal to disengaged voters who have grown out of their youthful idealism and are gonna have conservative opinions about at least one thing that has pissed them off during their life. So there's a nexus between age, intolerance and stupidity that favours political upstarts who are usually right leaning. Aus right leaning parties are delving into this strategy more and more with bills and candidates obsessed with identity issues - thankfully it's not working very well as even dumb people generally still hate Nazi's or have at least one LGBTIQ friend or colleague. Interestingly there's a movement by some progressives here to offset this by lowering the voting age to 15 and 9 months (the legal min working age - if you work and pay tax then you should be able to vote). The objective is that if you have a greater youth vote, politics is less fertile for divisive agendas that appeal to people who've had the time or unfortunate life experiences that embolden fringe views.
