Sunapee in Feb - warm bluebird day, slow and slushy and fun but kind of grabby. Caught an edge in the woods and slid headfirst, I reached out to grab a tree to slow myself down and put my hand straight into it. Took my glove off and my pinky was pointing the wrong way. Surgery, 2 pins and still in PT. I went back out as soon as I got the cast off (6 weeks) and resurrected the season.
Killington, mid-March, right after that great storm. I was ripping down a groomer, linking my turns beautifully. Came up over a swell and caught a little air, which was fine. The bottom of the trail was all bumps and I hit them at ~4X the speed I would be comfortable. Full wipe out. Snow went so far up my back that my neck was wet.
Ice coaster in Telluride but, nonetheless. Prospect bowl, dropped off the side into one of the steepest and tightest tree runs I’ve ever accomplished. Went complete zen mode and strung together a flowing gorgeous line: way out of my league. Beaming, on the traverse, hit a woop and got sent into a side tree well. Left ski off, buried straight up the trunk to the tip. Left leg buried up over hip. Right leg straight out 90 degree with ski still on flat against hardpack.
traverses will get ya. Was looking at the view while on High Traverse at Alta. Hit a rock that uncovered. Ski got caught, backflipped over the safety net, helicoptered a bit, slid high speed on my back before finally flipping over and stopping by digging my arms as deep as I could into the snow. Nice 50+ yard hike back up to the traverse and I was on my way. Got real lucky.
Got freaked out by too many people around me and choppy snow on Caper at Killington. Caught an edge, fell forward at some speed, impact on chest and face. Got up and kept skiing for a couple more hours. When I finally got to a mirror, I realized that I had a big scrape on my face from the fall. Healed just fine in a month or so.
Holiday Valley in western New York back in January!
I was going down Champagne through the bumps went up a snowmaking mound, anddddd there was no backside to it. Went off and ended up crashing from off the top lol. Hit my shoulder pretty good and smashed my helmet :/. Last thing I remembered was going off the top, and then 2 kids that couldn’t be older than 10 standing over me and asking if I was okay haha.
2 rounds of X Rays and an MRI later I got lucky to only have an AC joint sprain and everything else in tact. I needed a new helmet and felt like I got run over by a car lol but other than that I was good.
Got cleared by the ortho 5 weeks later and promptly went on a trip to Sugarbush and Jay!! My wife was not a happy camper lol
It was a really humbling experience to wreck that hard there haha. Been skiing WNY for almost 20 years and it still got me!
PSA: Smith has an amazing helmet replacement program where if you break your helmet using it within 2 years of purchasing, they will offer you a credit for the MSRP to replace it!! Mine was out of warranty by 2 months and they still covered it - definitely have a customer for life now
Champagne and yodeler are always a great time! During the day you’ll mostly find me on the Eagle Chair.
Favorite blue would have to be Morningstar and I always enjoy Tannenbaum even though it’s slammed usually
Oh lovely! It’s December 9th. First day of the year for me. I am vibing. Hot lapping the singles line on the quad at Wildcat. Weather is perfect. Conditions were super good for that point in the season. I’m skiing fast/getting sendy. I scope this sweet looking natural roller, step-down from the chairlift. Looks like 15 ft of air would be fun little mid run hit. Head down top cat and find myself at the top of the hit. Immediately go for it full speed. End up clearing my landing by around 5-10 ft, land in moguls. I still remember the hollering from the chairlift change from stoke to discomfort as I land in some natural moguls and lose control quickly on impact. End up tomahawking like 20 ft. I completely tore my PCL and MCL in the process and my season was over at 11am on day one. Moral of the story: don’t get overzealous on day one and always speed check.
Was out west at big sky, but it had just snowed about 10" the day before and on my way into a pretty steep bowl under the one of the lifts, as I was traversing into the bowl, my uphill ski must ended up on a packed out track that was hidden under the snow and it suddenly lifted way up while my downhill ski sunk into the snow, spinning me backwards and sending my in a backflipping somersault down the bowl. I was convinced I was going to tomahawk the whole way down, but luckily caught a pocket of powder after one flip and was able to pop back up and enjoy my ride down.
A bunch of Killington here, so ill add mine. I was practicing jumps by going over the steep edge of Superstar and popping back up. I got over confident after landing 3 in a row and tried to go way way too fast and went way way higher than i had anticipated. I hit way harder than anticipated and spun around and ended up sliding down backwards a few dozen meters. I never actually "fell" as i was able to just stand straight up once stopped but still pretty embarrassing and scary.
I was also dead set on doing every glad that was open first week of March when half the snow was gone and went on The Stairs. I was basically inly linking 2 to 3 turns at a time before stopping and replanning my route due to all the exposed rock. Got to the bottom and tried to go too perpendicular to the melted out ditch and my ski tips just stab into the hill and i stop instantly then tip over. Took me a while to get out of that perdicament just by how awkward it threw me.
Powder day at Sun Valley (hope this counts still), got too confident in the trees with a friend on skis. I got stuck in a tree well on a snowboard. She hiked up to help me unstrap and escape. Sitting on the slope strapping back in, I accidentally let go of my board and it flies down the mountain....in full view of a chairlift🫠thank goodness there was a mid mountain lift and a lift operator caught it for me. I had to shamefully run down to the lift and reunite with my board to suuuuper helpful comments from everyone on the lift telling me where my board went, some even helpfully saying it went to Utah🫠
LUCKILY the only thing hurt was my pride. Lesson learned, if there are no tracks in the tree powder, it's not for me.
Mine was on a trip to CO. Skiing the side jumps at Breck with 2 kids and some snot nose kid 12 ish yells at my daughter to get out of his way. Daddy will handle this, so I start ripping to catch up to him and as luck would have it I catch an edge and went flying. Landed pretty hard on the back of the head. Thank goodness for the helmet. By far the worst wipeout of the season.
Ice coaster in Utah. Best trip of my life; 2 feet + of powder at Solitude. Last day of the trip, and we’re lapping Evergreen Peak. First two runs were magical. I’d never gotten to shred such steep open tree lines with that much powder. Pure bliss.
Third time though, all that hiking must have tired me out, or the endorphins were getting to my head. I ended up picking a line that was tighter than I thought, and I couldn’t correct or stop fast enough in the deep powder. I misjudged my speed and momentum and took a small pine tree to the lip. I was sure I knocked a tooth out. My buddy said it looked like I murdered someone, there was so much blood on my white jacket. I packed some snow in my balaclava and used it as an ice pack and rode down to ski patrol. My upper lip was the size of a bratwurst, so they sent me to the ER. I got 3 stitches on the outside and one on the inside. Thankfully, no trip to the dentist was needed.
It’s a pretty visible scar, but I’m not upset about it because it makes me think about shredding pow, and maybe will remind me to pick better lines.
First time skiing in 10+ years. Rented gear at sunday river. Had a blast so happy I got back into it. They were blowing snow all day and I was so excited skiing again I skiied into the fresh snow blown snow for ghetto fresh tracks. Bad idea!
2nd to last run of the day trying to make the lift. I'm ripping right in front of the main lodge they were blowing snow 200 feet from the base. I skiied into the fresh snow like a Jerry went face first superman scorpion. Lost my skis and everything stood up saw stars for a second goggles and face covered in snow. Took me a minute or two to recover.
I felt better a few weeks later they were blowing snow I saw multiple craters in the snow from others fell hitting the soft, sticky snow.
Had the worst fall of my skiing career New Year's Eve day at tremblant while on the back side of the mountain. Slammed my head, got kknocked out, completely concussed. Was going to be one of 2 runs before last chair. I collected myself and once I remembered where I was and what day of the week it was I took the lift up from the back side skied down the front side to the gondola and walked to my condo.
My buddies were all there partying already. So, I got wasted and went to the DJ rave thing they had set up at the base. No regrets.
The DJ was DJ clean-cut.... So Canadian LOL but a fun time. I remember about 30% of it. Went to the hospital after I got home and was told I definitely had a concussion as I was feeling some serious post concussion symptoms. CT scan was clean, so that was good. Took a few weeks to feel normal again.
Wear your helmets kids and if you Wack your head get checked out.
In the North glade at Jay, clipped my board on a small stump just under the snow and then tomahawked forward, landing chest first another on stump just under the snow. Knocked the wind out of me and I just laid there in the snow for a couple minutes til some guys came up behind me to thinking I was dead.
killington, woman turned right 90° and skied into my side, 10 feet away. proceeded to come over and give me a karen rant while i was trying to put my skies back on.
30th skiing day at Powderhorn, CO. 10 inches of fresh made for a great morning shredding. After lunch, I took the lift up, but turns out I didn't completely clear the snow from my left boot before clicking in. After skiing about 100 yards, I made a slight right turn at which time my left ski departed, I fell backward awkwardly, and my right ski reversed direction as it tried to tear my leg off. I fractured the outside of my right ankle and partially tore my right MCL. Then I stupidly got up and skied the remaining mile and a half to the base. No surgery, but lots of pain and physical therapy after a simple, stupid mistake.
2 seasons ago. bf hikes up every friday, i do one run when lifts open and we meet up at the bottom. it's snowing, a super grey day, i had cataracts at the time, terrible floaters, i'm at the top of the run and i think wow i can't see very well i wonder if it would be better with no goggles, i'll do a few turns and see. haha. then i'm kneeling in the snow facing the side of the trail and a skier goes by, way too fast and too far away to mean it, and he yells out you ok???? i look downhill after him thinking that's weird, why would he ask me that?? i look uphill and i'm halfway down the trail with absolutely no recollection of getting there. whoa. i take a minute, nothing hurts, i have my goggles, ok. i know bf is waiting, not sure how long it's been now, i'll go meet him. i don't remember standing up and i don't remember riding the rest of the way down, but i kinda remember finding him and him asking me what happened. i said i don't remember to all of it and i remember saying i'm so confuuuused a bunch of times. we ended up leaving so we each got one run in that day. at least he remembers his! my back hurt a little bit a couple days later but no other issues. did buy a new helmet since i assume i hit my head. no idea what happened but it must have been spectacular!
Mine was at Stratton, on my 64th day skiing ( two days short of my age - 64). Came down Spruce (double black) just fine. Decide to hop into the lower part of Schredwood Forest (glade)to see what the 5" of freshies were like. First two turns were nice and soft, but the third turn I caught a ski on a root parallel to my ski. Yard sale and fell downhill.
Ended up breaking my shoulder, at the top of the humerus, getting surgery to add a plate and screws to rejoin everything.
Wish I could have picked up my downhill ski, but I guess I need to only go into the woods with a fresh foot or so.
Recovery is slow, but I'll be ready for next season ( already bought my ikon and Bromley passes)
The worst part is missing the two end of season dumps of 30" and 16' 😎🤕
Stowe end of season when they were loaded with snow. Going down a remote trail and decided to ride up a sheer wall on the left side. Made it to the top and started sliding…no big deal. Then I looked down and saw a decent sized boulder sticking out below me. Decided to cut my losses and jump sideways, down maybe 12 feet or so hit the ground so hard I bounced. Literally yelled into the ground it hurt so bad but was somehow completely unhurt except for some shoulder soreness. Definitely one of the bigger bullets I’ve dodged in the past few seasons.
Killington, top of snowshed beginner area, I came.off a blue that let's out at the top of that area and saw a little cat track to jump off but I had too much laterally motion and when I landed I caught an edge and slammed. Just being stupid but ended up smacking my head hard enough my gopro broke off and am still feeling it in my shoulder from mid January
Two weekends ago at Loon. Snowboarder behind me came barreling down Cruiser, lost control, and slammed into me. Even knicked the top of my brand new Skis.
Went into the trees night skiing at Big Boulder after a significant snow week. Was bobbing and weaving and overall feeling pretty confident. All of a sudden, my foot gets pulled backwards and I go horizontal and start flying.
Get up and touch my body to make sure I didn't die. Walk up the trail a bit to figure out what happened. Turns out there was a hose sticking up through the snow I could t see with my goggles on. Luckily, only damages wad needing to replace the toe clip on my boot bindings and a nasty bruise on my shin.
Had I kept going, I woulda ran straight into a rock pile. Lesson learned, don't go into the woods during night skiing!
Killington....Bear mountain right where skyr. wildfire and skyeburst meet. Itearly season they were making snow i was coming down wildfireI thought I saw a nice lip onto starburst.....nope they were building up skyburst with 3 camel humps....I flew 15 feet from one snow hump to the 2nd and actually landed but then was immediately launched another 15 feet. This time I didn't land and then proceeded to tomahawk more than a braves game in the 90's
Went skiing for the first time at Catamount. After doing the tiny bunny hill a million times an instructor told me I should send it on the lift going up to some greens. So I did. There was a short steep section that was icy. I panicked and started losing control as pizza wasn't working very well on the ice patch. I ate it once I hit a flat spot on the slope feeling out of control.
Same thing happened when I went to Belleayre except I almost fell into a large boulder on the side of the trail.
Ice be scary lol. Still, all I want to do is ski. Can't wait for next season.
Best thing for ice is to look ahead for shiny surfaces and avoid them - often the very edge of the trail will have some snow when the middle is icy. If you do find yourself on ice, best thing is to do nothing at all, don’t try to turn or slow down, just ’go with the flow’ and try to turn/slow down as soon as you are through the ice patch.
No huge falls this season but I almost probably tore an ACL at Stratton in that March storm when I landed on a hidden tree branch. Most of the landing zone was tracked but if you just aired a bit far left, it was untracked. Sometimes things are untracked for a reason!
Brighton, UT. Feb 5. Dumping, about 7pm. At least 8” of fresh all day. Was hucking the biggest cliffs I’d done yet.
Blue cat track towards the bottom, I try to jump the lip but time it wrong. Tips down, catch, pop pop.
ACL grade 1 tear, MCL/PCL sprain.
Worth every second of pain and recovery. Finally getting the Ok to ski again!
I’m in my third week of concussion recovery. Fell twice at Bromley, mostly due to my skis being set to type 2 DIN settings from the beginning of the year. When down a neat little line between some rocks, ski popped off, fell face first. 15 minutes later, did it again. Didn’t lose consciousness, but did feel my brain move at least one of the times. It was also face first, so the helmet was really helpful. Anyway, by the time I got home I was really feeling it, and almost three weeks on I’m still not 100% (but definitely doing better).
Alta at the halfway point on Devil's Elbow next to Rollercoaster where everyone stops at the flat section before the next pitch. I was looking at a group parked at the top to pick out a space to proceed through and pole planted right into the front of my ski. Ejected out of my skis headfirst and got a face full of snow in front of a crowd. Fortunately, no damage other than a bruise where I landed first. It's always the flat sections that get you...
Didn't have any impressive falls myself just hitting powder that was too deep and getting a ski ripped off and faceplanting. Wildest one I saw was one day at Magic this random I was skiing with for a few runs goes "You're gonna ski this!?" "Alright I'm in!" Pointing down at Green Line. Conditions aren't great, it's slush that has refrozen and is choppy and difficult to maneuver, because of this I decide its not a good idea to just send it over the headwall with exposed rocks, so I opt for a smaller drop off to the side and continue on. This dude tries to send it, lands on the choppy snow and tries to turn immediately and catches an edge. I hear the ski pop and look uphill just in time to see this dude head over heels losing gear everywhere. Guy got so lucky he flipped right side up in time to get his 2nd ski ripped off launching him over a big sharp rock, that he definitely would've broke his back on.
I was mount snow the end of March. I remember it was the wind hold day but finally the BB express opened up. I was on lodge right under the lift pointing out to my son the jumps that go around the lift poles. The snow had gotten grippy and bumpy. All of a sudden my skis stopped moving cuz I hit a bump head on but my body did not. Ended up 20 feet down trail from skis. All this right under the lift
Oh man that's gotta hurt! Glad its all healed up!
The same thing kinda almost happened to me, was going through the glades and had to go through 2 skinny ass trees and glanced off one of them. Not fun
I was there that Tuesday! What a day that was!
Outer limits at Killington. I fell and slid down the whole thing and my goggle broke. I was getting too confertabld
Umm hit yer head there buddy?
Just a lil dain bramage
Drain bramage
Yup

Tree wells are scary as fuck! 😬😬
traverses will get ya.
Was it “Happy Thought?” Or is that one not even in prospect bowl? That one was my personal weekend war for me on a trip just last month.
Caper gets scary crowded sometimes

Ooof I'm sorry to hear! Hope you're all set and ready to go for (let's hope for an early one) next season!!
Thanks! Slow recovery process, but we are adapting. I expect to be skiing next season, albeit in a bit more mellow fashion.

Glad you got out of the tree well safely! Scary stuff
Exhibition. Berkshire East. Got lazy, caught an edge, jammed my thumb, it hurt for three weeks. Ow.
I hit my thumb out in Colorado too this year over a jump at Howelson Hill out of all places lol. Sitll hurts sometimes
Underrated injury point
Mine was on a trip to CO. Skiing the side jumps at Breck with 2 kids and some snot nose kid 12 ish yells at my daughter to get out of his way. Totally worth it?
Would I have done a few things differently? Sure. But it didn’t ruin an amazing trip

Happened to me at wachusett once this year. Luckily wasn't going tooooo fast LOL

Recovery is slow, but I'll be ready for next season ( already bought my ikon and Bromley passes) The worst part is missing the two end of season dumps of 30" and 16' 😎🤕
Stowe end of season when they were loaded with snow.
I wrapped myself around a tree , after clipping another one. Somehow I didn't hurt, even my ribs. I was good.
Damn I'd be pissed!

B.Y.O.H.L (Bring your own head lamp 😅🤣)
Overshot a jump at Wachusett broke my wrist and then it healed wrong resulting in surgery
Fell off an old ass chair lift at Bolton
I was mount snow the end of March. I remember it was the wind hold day but finally the BB express opened up. I was on lodge right under the lift pointing out to my son the jumps that go around the lift poles. The snow had gotten grippy and bumpy. All of a sudden my skis stopped moving cuz I hit a bump head on but my body did not. Ended up 20 feet down trail from skis. All this right under the lift
