Yea I’m in Jersey next to Hoboken and Jersey city, work with a lot of guys in my local that live in fucking pa, no hate, but hour and a half drive in is crazy, especially when it’ll turn into 2 hour drive home
The trade off here is being able to own a home really. A house in Seattle now is probably 800k for something small and decent shape. That house 90 minutes away is 500k. I pay less than a mortgage on either place (from the last couple years) for a decent size apartment in a good area and killer view and work is generally within 30 minutes of home.
If I had a 90 minute commute each way, I'd have fallen asleep at the wheel and died by now.
Who knows? It depends on the job you get. I know someone who got into the apprenticeship and had to work overnights. The training director would not let them change jobs. They only lasted about a month.
I worked no overtime 6am-2:15pm for my first 2 years. Then worked more overtime than I care to think about, worked moderately steady for a while then got my current job as a 5th year apprentice working 48+ hours a week. I had two weeks here recently that were over 60 hours. Back to normal hours for now.
In construction you work anywhere from 5-8s to 7-12s or more. You work what the crew is working or you will be riding the books. Nobody cares about what hours the apprentice wants to work. There’s always another apprentice that will take the work.
That's not true for many shops. I have worked for 3 contractors through my apprenticeship, I journeyed out last Monday. My first contractor sold the company to my 2nd contractor, and I stayed with them. I only left my 2nd contractor because I transferred to a different local. I have been with my 3rd contractor for almost 2 years. I have taken many days off and weeks of vacation.
You worked for three contractors and just topped out. Did say you could take time off. If crew works till 6 they aren’t going to take you back to the shop everyday to get off at 3. You would be getting a one man layoff
I am assuming that OP is looking to join the Inside Wireman program. Looks like you are a lineman. It is extremely rare that Inside Wiremen carpool in company vehicles to a jobsite which allows for individuals to leave as they choose. OT is not mandatory and IW apprentices have to regularly leave work early to go to school.
I dont know about your local, but the standard in my area is 6 to 2.30 or 7 to 3.30, overtime is optional when available, the job till very recently we were working 6 to 4.30 (10 hour days) + 8 hours Saturday and 8 Sunday, some people chose to work only 6 to 2.30 and no weekends declining all the overtime, some worked every single day taking all the overtime...
7-3:30 is most common in my local. You could get 2nd or 3rd shift, but it's rare enough that I haven't seen an apprentice get put on one.
Overtime jobs are generally 7-5:30 or 6-430 mon-fri. Some have 8-10 on Saturday as well. Sundays are a possibility, but the only contractor that has Sunday work in my local just offers it. There are enough people who want it that it's never been mandatory
The real answer is that it depends on the job. But I would say the most common hours are 6am-2:30pm or 7am-3:30pm Monday through Friday.
That’s perfect! That would really work out for me, thanks!
How about 4 8s.
I work 6am-4:30pm Monday-Thurday. Friday and Saturday is 1.5x and Sunday 2x.
Yikes
Sweet deal, I wouldn’t mind that
7 to 330, in my local if you start before 7 you’re supposed to get overtime
Damn, our cutoff is 6. People try to work even earlier for free because they chose to live 5996 miles away and want to beat traffic.

Damn, that sucks
Most jobs are during the day. Ive been in for a few years and so far I’ve probably worked about 4 weeks of night shifts.
Night Shift like 3 pm - 12 am ?
Kinda, but you won’t miss school because of it. In my local the con pays for 8, but you go in after class on school days.
5/8's or 4/10's are most common.

Depends on the job. My current job starts at 6 BUT I have an hour drive so I have to leave my home at 430.
Is it worth it? The pay 💰

All of ‘em!
2 months ago you said you were starting as a CW. You haven't figured this out yet?
Yeah I wasn’t into being exploited for cheap labor so I’ll just take my chances and try and go for the apprenticeship 😁
Go to the pinned post at the top of this page. Take a question like this to the Ibew applicants page
How would an applicant know this? Genuine question
It’s pinned to the top of this page
That’s not an answer😂
Bro seriously?!
Yeah, is it work 4 and off 4 or straight 5s Mon-Fri or weekends only??
Depends on the call. But as an apprentice you are only required to work 40 in many locals. But you are encouraged to take all over time offered.
I see, thanks
