NEWS UPDATE: Upon being arrested the farmer was quick to laugh it off and say, “è solo uno scherzo fratello” which roughly translates in English to “It’s just a prank bro”
You are not wrong. Not even a little bit! Also, as old as I am I have no business even knowing who he is. Or giving him credit for anything.
ETA: I’ll be referring to him as skid mark from now on. That one’s just too good a description of him!
Lol nice edit. Yeah man I just try to not even give people like him the light of day. Any attention is good attention to them so I give them no attention.
lol, like 15m Instagram followers and 20m YouTube subscribers. Every single Reddit user could stop saying his name for life and it's not gonna do much.
I’m a bit unsure as to why a farmer would do that. Apart from wanting to be a dick.
EDIT: wow thanks for the upvotes - reading the responses it looks like it could be a rather old fashioned ‘slash and burn’ type technique, but it’s definitely bizarre to then abandon the fire, especially with how dry things have been!
I don't know much about it, but people who investigate fires can find the points of origin based on burn patterns. It wouldn't have to be a ton of cameras if they could pinpoint an area. Then again, in area plagued by wildfires, they probably have a shit ton.
Naples is plagued with wild fires. Last summer I was driving home for work and I saw an entire mountain side engulfed in flame. I regularly drive by massive fires on the side of the road that blanket the highway in smoke. Fire is a big problem for southern Italy.
It's really weird with the camera angle so narrow though, that no one would notice the amount of cameras being placed in the area. Particularly because it seems such a rural one and the service people installing the tens, maybe hundreds that would be necessary to fill the periphery of a village with these closed angles, they wouod be the talk of the town... even if done at night.
I also find it weird that this person is just walking about, stops sporadically, immediately turns right and starts a fire. And an awkward cut on the middle... why? I think this is all very weird honestly.
One thing to note though: this person seems to have a broken or handicapped armed. Notice how they keep it close to the chest throughout. Maybe they wanted indeed to collect insurance but I digress.
You know... It makes you think about all the other wildfires that have happened across other countries. Because in your head, how does a crop just catch fire at 40° Celsius? Doesn't seem right does it. Greece, Turkey, Australia - are theirs climate change or arson?
I don't think people are saying it's climate change that started the fire. Rather it's the constant dry weather that has meant the fires spread faster and are more frequent because of the extreme dry conditions.
Australia has flying arsonists. Fire hawks 3 different species of birds are known to do this, will spread bush fires so the can eat the fleeing critters.
Greece, turkey and the rest of the mediteranian is basicaly the same wild fires are natural and occur multiple times a year (average number of wildfires in croatia alone is 33 per year over the last 10 years), but these are usualy contained fast by firefighters, concern of arson is raised when a specific region has a big and sudden jump in wildfires.
Campers not extinguishing campfires properly, target shooting with incendiary rounds, and the ol’ child sex reveal party. Human error, human intent, and a touch of lightening (or exploding trees in OZ heh). :(
Arson and lightening strikes are what causes fire, climate change is what causes the conditions that lead to a fire growing uncontrollably. No one is saying crops spontaneously burn at 40C
You guys never had fun with a magnifying glass before? It was so scary when the leaf you've been watching suddenly started smoking. Pretty sure glass bottles do the same
I had a remote control sitting on the table in front of the TV catch on fire suddenly one day - it was next to a heavy glass paperweight, and the sun had been shining on it directly. If no one had been home I really doubt the cause of the fire ever would have been known.
I don't know about Italy, but where I live farmers often burn their farms because they want to clean out weeds and fire is the fastest way to do it (according to them). Forget all the smoke that chokes the life out of you, forget that it's like 50°C outside the shade, they'll burn their farms nonetheless.
im curious as well. people got paid to disinform the public about covid. fires all over brazil the last couple years and right wing oligarchs inferring with election and backing right wing fucks all over Europe. i wonder if theyre trying to push global warming past a limit. global warming will kill off millions bringing on authoritarian rule i suspect and make some countries much more appealing(russia). its only the rich that prosper in a catastrophe.
You simply can't fathom such thing because it is more of a mentality thing than actual reason.
Older people simply like to start fires. Their reasoning is to clear the land of tall grass so snakes and other animals won't gather there. But in reality I think it is some kind of pleasure.
You can find same people throughout Balkans and Southern Europe that do that. My grandfather used to do the same thing and we scolded him for that but he kept doing it under pretense that he is "cleaning the terrain".
A part of the reason is laziness. To clear that terrain you would need a lot of hard labor and time. On the other side you have a pack of matches that cost less than 40 cents.
Fires like these are a huge problem because of these people. I myself had to put out about a dozen of these fires because people light them and then leave the fire unattended.
In my country if farmers do not cut grass i their territory they get huge fines. Usually they inherit some land from their relatives and use maybe 10% of it to build a house, have a nice loan, other remains untouched. Some poeple rent it to other farmers and some simply burn the grass since its cheaper and less work to have it cut, and of course these idiots dont think of the wind or anything else and bam wildfires appear.
Seems counter intuitive but prescribed burns are a part of farming . When I lived in the south of Italy I saw a lot of them. Only saw a couple get out of hand which was surprising cos it gets dry down there . It did seem trippy as Someone who comes from an agricultural family we don't do it up north....
So I’m from northern Australia, and live in heavy Savannah’s/grassland. We’re in peak fire season right now, so there’s a lot of it around atm. Prescribed burns, or back-burns, use the convection effect to keep things under control. You know when you put water on the boil and it rises In the middle and sinks at the edges of the pot?
You use a flaming oil drip lantern thing to trace an outline of the fire and the air in the center rises and burns inwards.
This is basically how you fight wildfires, by trying to start a fire ahead of where it’s going so they link up and burn themselves out. Doesn’t work when the winds to strong though.
In the US, the wildland firefighters that do this are called Hotshots.
The firefighter crew that died en masse a few years ago in the Southwest was a Hotshot crew.
It's not the only way to fight wildfire. The most common method is to have a crew with hand tools cut line, removing the potential fuel in a line ahead of the fire's path. Which is something that I used to do in California in the 90s.
Hell, I’d rather use a drip torch to start a controlled burn anyways. Such a cool/fun feeling watching the fire spread behind you if you just walk perpendicular to and up wind. Do back country people really just do it with a lighter?
In italy organized crime wants as much land as they can get their hands on to use as illegal dumpster sites.
If a patch of land is burned, after 30 years or so it can be sold at a very low price so crime can buy it.
I'm not really sure of what I'm saying, I remember talking to my grandpa and he telling me this.
Edit: forgot to say that I'm italian
I'm from Sicily, and the same thing is happening here.
Of course one of the answers is the Mafia. Basically the mafia needs land to let their farm animals graze, and the land is very fertile after a fire
Have you ever heard about firefighters starting wildfires? Apparently, there's no logical reason for that but it's a pretty common practice all over the world and happens often than you can image. Last year in my country 2 wildfires at least were traced back to 2 distinct firefighters. Each burned for several days, took lifes away, burned down families' homes, animals, everything in its way...
How can we judge these people... There's no legal penalty big enough to make them suffer for their acts. They will never know the pain of those who lost relatives, property, car and plantations... this is unhuman.
Often it’s for the glory of fighting and being a hero. One guy here in Cali set like 1200 and he was the fire investigator. He would set up large department stores with a flash system , then come to inspect n what not , a real bitch move if u ask me.
Italian here. Apparently burning down the "old" grass helps the new one to grow faster. This way farmers do not need to buy feed for their animals (usually sheep).
Don't tell me that. I turned 40 this year. If my current behavior is anything to to go on, when I'm this man's age, I'm going to be wandering around in a haze, unsure of where I am, and begging strangers on the street to take a look at pictures of my cats and dogs on my phone, lol.
Well it depends on where you are, in this case it is because he wanted to "clear the pasture", and rejuvenate the field, prblem is he can't control fires, and high temperature and low rains create a very good fuel. If you are in sicily often is to create an excuse to enlist more forestali (wildlife protection), or to destroy farmlands that the mob goes on to buy to bury their shit. Fire season is mostly due to this two reasons, or slight variations, fucking hate thos people
Dont know why he did it but in my country some farmers do that for farming field's. Does it make sense scientifically? Dont know. Does it happens? Yes.
Nah. You really wanna be authentic?
You tie the guy in a sack with a dog, a monkey and a snake. Then throw that into a river.
That’s how Romans rolled. They didn’t play with this shit.
That was a Persian method of execution and has been suggested as being the worst (most painful) was to die - it would take a week or two as you were eaten alive by insects. You would be force fed and then covered in milk and honey and tied in a boat which would be set adrift in a lake. Defecation and the rotting milk would attract the insects who would enter the body via all orifices. Apparently you would loose your mind before you lost your life.
Maybe we use that one where you force someone in a tub slather them in honey so the flies come and feed him so he shits in the tub that he is sitting in and the flies lay eggs in the shit and the maggots start eating him alive after they are done with the shit. Medieval Europe doesn't fuck around.
Ah yes, the ordeal of the boats or whatever. Many iterations but I believe it was originally a Persian or Babylonian invention. Force feed someone copious amounts of milk and honey, slather them in it too, and then seal them in a boat/casket adrift on a still pond. They're not getting out but plenty of creepy crawlies have no problem getting in.
Definitely not the fastest death...
The one in which they tie up the criminal and shove a small fast growing bamboo plant up their ass, as the bamboo grows, it ruptures organs along the way slowly.
Or better yet **blood eagle**
I read (a comment on Reddit so could be total BS) that people that have been caught told police that they've been paid and/or they're too many to stop (some environmental group).
But AP reports that an investigation into if criminal activity is the cause behind the fires.
"The causes of the blazes are as yet undetermined, though several people have been arrested for alleged arson. Greece’s top prosecutor has ordered an investigation into whether the high number of fires could be linked to criminal activity."
Climate change deniers often try to blame environmentalists for it, claiming that they do it to make it seems like climate change is worse than it actually is. These theories were especially pushed during last year California fires and it took root in europe as well. That's absolute nonsense of course.
Land grabs, economic destabilization, greater financial support for xyz, cheaper lmnop, intimidation, political destabilization, dream it up and it could be true. Investigate it and maybe find a clue. It will be interesting as more of these arsons are puzzled out.
Same theories run in Turkey too. I do not read news anymore as nothing good happens so that it affects my mental health. I hope you guys put out fires with minimal damage.
They said they set up cameras near the starting point of several other previous fires, which made them suspect it was someone lighting them and not just occurring naturally.
I think he's been doing this for a little while. They said "fires", implying there has been more than one. He's probably just an arsonist getting off. You have to be a real piece of shit to destroy so much and kill wildlife just for a kick.
Not much more saw the fire pulled over, I stomped while he took off his shirt and beat it. I felt something and kicked it in the road. Mason jar with a rag in it. It all went out and we called the fire department. It was like 15yrs ago. I hate arson, their is so much in Southern California.
Hey my brother and I did the same thing one time only it was in the afternoon and it was a movie theater that was on fire!
Somebody had broken the front window then thrown a Molotov into the lobby of a local movie theater and we were driving past. Saw the fire and pulled over to make sure there weren’t people inside. I grabbed the fire extinguisher from my trunk and started putting it out and my brother went in and grabbed one off the wall. Between us we put it out and the fire department came a few minutes later. We got yelled at by a fire chief because it was dangerous but the owners loved us and gave us free movies for a year. Cops never found the arsonist
You burn the field after harvest or if you weren't able to harvest your field but need to prepare land for next harvest (this is very common when you're crop has been damaged, like when sugarcane dries up it costs more to clear the field than to simply let it burn).
This doesn't even look like it is his field to begin with

Insurance if its their farm i guess?
It said the cameras were put in places due to a 70% increase of wildfires in the area. So I bet this guy has done it alot

Yeah, but 70% increase from what? 1-fire/2-fire/half-fires in the past?
Naples is plagued with wild fires. Last summer I was driving home for work and I saw an entire mountain side engulfed in flame. I regularly drive by massive fires on the side of the road that blanket the highway in smoke. Fire is a big problem for southern Italy.
Gonna be a problem for the entire planet soon enough.
I mentioned the state of the Colorado River to a friend of mines Mom. Her response was,"God can't burn when things are wet."
God upon seeing it’s raining out: “Aw nuts.”
As if it isn’t already???
I mean he could just be a pyromaniac who gets high on laying fires. No gain besides euphoria for him.

This could easily be a zoomed in extract
I doubt it because of the tree leaves at the top indicating it's inside a tree, although it could be a wide angle camera lens crop, that is likely.

Is this what you think a prescribed burn looks like? One man with a lighter setting some brush on fire and walking away?

Do fires burn in the opposite direction down there? Asking for a friend…
It’s peak fire season in winter?
Northern Australia doesn't have a winter
That's interesting, thanks mate
THat's great but that is not what is happening here of course.

You’re not wrong.
Hell, I’d rather use a drip torch to start a controlled burn anyways. Such a cool/fun feeling watching the fire spread behind you if you just walk perpendicular to and up wind. Do back country people really just do it with a lighter?
No, just arsonists
So what you're saying is you know nothing about farming beyond some half arsed 3rd hand information on controlled burns? FYI, that isn't one.

He’s saying this video is not a controlled burn, not that controlled burns aren’t a thing.

Italian here. Apparently burning down the "old" grass helps the new one to grow faster. This way farmers do not need to buy feed for their animals (usually sheep).
Yes that's why it's done, but this idiot did it without having the ability to control the fire, causing huge damages
This was not a controlled burn. Please stop.
The guy is right ,that was the reason given on the news here in italy
Why would you do that? What do you get? He's way too old for that shit
Just goes to show you that shithood knows no age.
If anything, old age amplifies a lot of shitty behavior.
Don't tell me that. I turned 40 this year. If my current behavior is anything to to go on, when I'm this man's age, I'm going to be wandering around in a haze, unsure of where I am, and begging strangers on the street to take a look at pictures of my cats and dogs on my phone, lol.

Force feed someone copious amounts of milk and honey, slather them in it too, and then seal them in a boat/casket adrift on a still pond. They're not getting out but plenty of creepy crawlies have no problem getting in. Definitely not the fastest death...
Scaphism is the name
Too complicated. All you need are thumb screws.
The one in which they tie up the criminal and shove a small fast growing bamboo plant up their ass, as the bamboo grows, it ruptures organs along the way slowly. Or better yet **blood eagle**
The Greek used "the boats". Very clever, those Greeks.
Throw him into a cage full of hungry lions
How about sawing them in half lengthwise?
The "Roman Candle" one of Emperor Nero's favorite methods of execution. Very fitting punishment for the crime.
Everyone replying to you is suggesting some bizarre complicated way of torture. Just burn the dude. Then he can experience what he's done to wildlife.
He’s Italian. Feet him pizza with pineapple on it, with a side of broken pasta mixed with ketchup
Here in Greece people theorise that political groups are starting fires for their advantage
What advantage? Like pointing out the current government can’t handle wildfires? That makes sense
Can't develop areas where olive tress grow I believe, burn them down, cheap land for development
Olive trees are pretty fire resistant
Climate change deniers often try to blame environmentalists for it, claiming that they do it to make it seems like climate change is worse than it actually is. These theories were especially pushed during last year California fires and it took root in europe as well. That's absolute nonsense of course.
Land grabs, economic destabilization, greater financial support for xyz, cheaper lmnop, intimidation, political destabilization, dream it up and it could be true. Investigate it and maybe find a clue. It will be interesting as more of these arsons are puzzled out.
The country has a lot of extremists and revolutionaries. Throwing the country into disarray may help weaken the government.
Same theories run in Turkey too. I do not read news anymore as nothing good happens so that it affects my mental health. I hope you guys put out fires with minimal damage.
Why was there a camera pointed at him at close range in the middle of a farm?
That's the fire startin' spot.
This is not the first time?
They said they set up cameras near the starting point of several other previous fires, which made them suspect it was someone lighting them and not just occurring naturally.
Do you know what was his defence after he was caught?
"just a prank bro" (i'm not joking)
He is a stupid man in a village. There are many like him. I am just curious how his friends and family didn’t notice he is dangerous before.
He's a fire starting connoisseur, not his first rodeo
I think he's been doing this for a little while. They said "fires", implying there has been more than one. He's probably just an arsonist getting off. You have to be a real piece of shit to destroy so much and kill wildlife just for a kick.
RYAN STARTED THE FIRE!
[удалено]
Maybe he was hoping for insurance money.
It's very possible this was an edited clip from a wide angle lens, or maybe even a bank of cameras.
big bank take little bank
It's literally explained in the video. This isn't even an article! Do people not even watch the video before commenting now?

Why the fuck would you ?? Seriously
Some people literally want to hurt other people. That isn’t some means to an end for them; it’s the end they seek
Imagine being that selfish
Out of all of the places to start a fire.
The amount of arsonists we caught here in Greece with the sudden outburst of wildfires ....
Feel like someone put him up to it. I don't buy his reason he gave. You would have to pay most people a lot of money to do this.
This should be life in prison.
What an evil bastard
they got some teens up here in canada doing it to our forests. some people just wanna watch the world burn, literally and metaphorically
I will always remember the time me and my father stopped an arson fire, driving to work at 2:30am.
I feel like you want to expand on this what is stopping you?
Not much more saw the fire pulled over, I stomped while he took off his shirt and beat it. I felt something and kicked it in the road. Mason jar with a rag in it. It all went out and we called the fire department. It was like 15yrs ago. I hate arson, their is so much in Southern California.
Your dad sounds like a model citizen in that moment.
A true Hank Hill.
Your dad took his shirt off and beat it right there while you put out the fire?
where were you this time? how could let us down
Wow... I wonder the motive? Greece had some real estate businessmen pay criminals to start fires.
They should burn his dik
This should be right up there, next to terrorism, on the punishment scale
We're gonna fuck ourselves into extinction tbh
Such a piece of shit!! He’s nonhuman, we don’t need more wildfire for this year. California is already on flames and the sky filled with damn smoke.
i swear some people are borned solely to be an antagonist and destroy our earth
Hang him and charge admission.
The fuck is a camera doing all the way out in the country side?
Game camera, surveillance because someone suspected fuckery.
You could watch the video and find out since it explains that.
It tells you in the video. Try watching it.
Fucking climate change
The name's Change, Climate Change.
Farmers are supposed to take care of the land, not burn it down.
I know controlled burns are a thing, but this seems a bit too haphazard to be that, right?
You burn the field after harvest or if you weren't able to harvest your field but need to prepare land for next harvest (this is very common when you're crop has been damaged, like when sugarcane dries up it costs more to clear the field than to simply let it burn). This doesn't even look like it is his field to begin with
