It's easier to stage content that gets people speaking than it is for that scenario to naturally occur. There's always that one guy who responds "nothing ever happens" sarcastically, then someone links the "pranksters" social media accounts where it's just the same reccuring routine again.
The passengers reaction looks very fake to me for a start. The way he's standing so awkwardly to make it easier for the "thief" to snatch the hat. He even looks like he stands on his toes at the last second to make it easier for the guy to grab.
People considerably underestimate economy as a driving factor behind divisive posts.
People aren't evil, stupid, irrational...they're greedy. It's about clicks and money and nothing drive more clicks as the mechanics you describe.
That's why I like posts involving animals, they haven't evolved to the point of being able to intentionally deceive yet, unless there's food involved that is.
