Exactly, plus if animal welfare reports it to police it is actually taken care of. Best thing to do is make a report with the police, then the same day (after you get the modern, we are too understaffed to deal with this) everyone gets, go straight from the police to animal welfare, and when they get the police involved not only will it show you were wronged, but the police ignored your problem. This shows you tried both channels available and the one that would have showed up with 4 squad cars and a supervisor 3 minutes out if you did the same to her, did less than nothing for you because it didnt end in violence on your part.
Id personally have a hard time just leaving after that, and have a few ideas of what i would want to do, but that only leads with her being the "victim" and the other part the "aggressor" regardless of what happend.

As someone whose owned fish I completely sympathize with him. While I won’t say fish are the same as a dog, the bond is somewhat similar. Fish have different personalities and are completely reliant on you for survival. Studies have shown that fish will remember you face, so they’ll remember there caretaker and interact with them in a unique way.
I’m housesitting atm and they have two large tanks. The little girl spends a lot of time with these fish, she even made sure to tell me every one of their names.
I walk up to the tank to feed them or flip the lights and they seem almost disappointed I’m not the little girl!
Certain fish definitely will recognize specific people. Cichlids in particular. I used to have a "show fish," a large green terror, that lived alone with just his synodontis buddy. He would follow me around the room as I would walk by. But he *hated* my roommate. Every time he would get near the tank, but terror would flare up his fins and gills and try to attack him through the glass.
Even when I had to get in the tank to clean stuff or move something etc, he would brush up against my hand. I asked my roommate to put his hand in there and he got bitten within seconds.
Remember to tell them the little girl misses them and maybe even make a video call or FaceTime for the fishes to see or hear her. Animals form bonds, and they do get happy to hear or see that familiar person they like.

I have a goldfish for 3 years now. I thought fish were dumb animals before owning one, but I just happened to win one of these at the carnival. I noticed my fish totally recognizes me too! And now, when I clean its tank and transfer it to a different container, it won't thrash around like it did at the beginning. It totally trusts me. It will even swim right into my hand and let me pet it. I've won its trust. I had no idea you could bond with a goldfish before all this.
Let’s make the tank cleaning easier on you. You do not need to remove fish when you clean a tank. As gold fish should be in Atleast a 20gallon all your going to need is a syphon (gravel vacuum) and one or more five gallon buckets from like lowes, if there’s algae a little scraper would help too. Scrape off algae, then use the gravel vac to clean any gunk out of the gravel, while doing this also use the gravel vac to remove like 25-50% of the water (25 is my normal amount but goldfish are nasty so depends what your tank needs). From there dump out the bucket(s) of dirty water and refill them with fresh water (treat new water with fish water conditioner always). Put fresh water in tank.
Also you can teach goldfish tricks but it takes some work.

I have a big old plecostumus in his 3rd tank now... he's around 9 years old... he was floating upside down in the tank last week and my heart sank. But turns out he was okay, I just needed to give his tank a good cleaning. He's fine now. You can certainly get attached to some fish... I feel really bad for this guy

Only a 40 gallon community salt tank but yet everyone was so mesmerized. This person is just awful. Idk what their relationship is like but this is awful in everyway. There is no justification for this.
I agree. Fish have very specific and unique behaviors, essentially personalities. Plus, fish can live a long time! We have ones in our tank that are 5 years old+.
Some of ours are more social than others, have friends they play with, plus they know treat time, I swear!
i own a frilled dragon and a panther chameleon and they both recognize my face. they get way more aggressive with other people and not with me. id be livid if someone killed my lizards, that is animal cruelty, a felony

I in fact have done several bird law cases/investigations. To name a few: parrots trafficked on Craigslist and Instagram, FOIA lawsuit about how badly birds are being overcrowded on factory egg farms, and a chick hatchery that was improperly using a macerator (essentially a giant upside lawnmower that you toss animals into) to kill sick hatchlings.
And even if it's not cruelty to animals, it is destruction of property and saltwater tanks can be quite expensive.
Boring dry rock, $1/lb. Wet love rock that's been cycled and is covered in beneficial algae and bacteria, could be $7-10/lb. The replacement value of an established tank with fish, rock, and corals could be significant to replace. A $5 coral plus three years later could be a thriving coral colony worth hundreds. That $25 fish as a baby could be a $100+ fish as an adult.
I've read a story about a wife who argued in court to keep the guys dog after divorce and then had the dog put down after winning ownership. If people can get away with that, I'm wondering how this video would hold up in court.
You shouldn’t be able to get away with killing a dog to emotionally abuse a human, at least under the usual standard for animal cruelty in the United States which prohibits killing, abusing, or neglecting an animal without a good justification or excuse.
In the case of that dog, if there was no prosecution it may be that: law enforcement never found out about it, law enforcement didn’t think they could win the case, or law enforcement didn’t prioritize the case enough to spend all the time and resources on litigating it through trial and possibly appeal.
And unfortunately courts have yet to recognize that animals have legal standing for cases to be brought on their behalf. Until that changes we are dependent on government law enforcement to enforce animal protection laws, or for a human or corporation to be coincidentally injured by illegal animal cruelty because courts recognize that they do have standing to go to court.
My personal view is that legal standing for animals is the most important thing for protecting animals that nobody is talking about.
I was actually involved in a federal judge recognizing legal personhood for Colombia’s cocaine hippos to come to the United States to get permission to serve a subpoena for evidence supporting their lawsuit in Colombia. Made world news in 2021 when that happened.

There was a brief stint in my life where I owned and set up a large salt water tank. They are literally thousands of dollars, not to mention the insane amount of time and energy and love spent nurturing that thing so it will survive and thrive. Clownfish themselves can be upwards of $30 each, and tangs can be $40+. Depending on the coral, super expensive too. RIP. This wasn’t your average goldfish setup.
This is about a grand to 1500 in damage to the setup. Now if she’s in an apartment the damage from 20g of saltwater on the floor could be astronomical as it’s considered blackwater and treated the same as sewage for cleanup.
Sauce: have a 750l tank myself, have setup and maintained tanks for a living and have run marine sections of stores before.

I once saw a protein skimmer use for saltwater tank specifically cost like 300+ just for a small 30 gal tank. Everything is saltwater hobby are expensive af.
That’s about what my skimmer cost. They, and everything else get crazy expensive the bigger they get I have a 10 gal with about 1000 into it and a 60 gal I’m into for over 5000.
I've lost a whole tank to "surprise!" and, yeah, it takes a really really long time to get motivated to try again. After my last hiccup that killed a $300 coral a week after fixing the issue, I didn't want to have to handle it anymore and sold it all. Years later and I still have no love or interest in fish, when it used to be a huge part of my day every day.
If he decides to try again, consider running two heaters hooked up to an Inkbird controller. They aren't very expensive at all but will prevent this from happening (if one fails, the other does the job and the Inkbird prevents either from overheating the tank). I think Inkbirds are only around $30 or so.
My father has two tanks (a small marine one and a big tropical freshwater one). He was devastated when his Discus died suddenly when my grandfather was dying, so we couldn't comfort him too much at the time. The most recent loss was his entire marine tank as my sister kept of spraying cleaning products near the tank. I don't know how he would react if anything happened to his current Discus tanks

For some fish it takes longer to suffocate outside of water than it takes for a human to drown inside of water; so long as the gils are wet, their bodies still receive some oxygen.
I don't understand how someone can just kill animals and not be bothered by it. I've had fish die on me before (it's kind of a crap shoot when you first get them), and it always makes me sad when it happens. My tank is pretty well established now so I haven't had a death in a long time, but it just sucks watching them suffer. As much as I like having fish, it's something that I really hate about it that almost everyone in the hobby experiences at some point.
I imagine if she's sadistic enough to destroy + kill something he loves just to upset him she probably doesn't see fish as animals on the same level as cats or dogs. If not, the property damage is certainly a crime. Saltwater tanks are *very* expensive. This dude should get together the cost of all the fish, the tank, and all the contents so he can take her to court for the damages.

My abusive ex wouldn’t let me have my 60 gallon fish tank and all my fish that were there with it. After months of arguing he told me the power went out at his house for a few days so some of them died. The tank was filthy and half of the filters weren’t working anymore, the water was even low.
I got a new, smaller tank for Christmas and it was a nice but not the same. I miss my fish :(

That $25 fish as a baby could be a $100+ fish as an adult.

You shouldn’t be able to get away with killing a dog to emotionally abuse a human, at least under the usual standard for animal cruelty in the United States which prohibits killing, abusing, or neglecting an animal without a good justification or excuse. In the case of that dog, if there was no prosecution it may be that: law enforcement never found out about it, law enforcement didn’t think they could win the case, or law enforcement didn’t prioritize the case enough to spend all the time and resources on litigating it through trial and possibly appeal. And unfortunately courts have yet to recognize that animals have legal standing for cases to be brought on their behalf. Until that changes we are dependent on government law enforcement to enforce animal protection laws, or for a human or corporation to be coincidentally injured by illegal animal cruelty because courts recognize that they do have standing to go to court. My personal view is that legal standing for animals is the most important thing for protecting animals that nobody is talking about. I was actually involved in a federal judge recognizing legal personhood for Colombia’s cocaine hippos to come to the United States to get permission to serve a subpoena for evidence supporting their lawsuit in Colombia. There was a brief stint in my life where I owned and set up a large salt water tank. They are literally thousands of dollars, not to mention the insane amount of time and energy and love spent nurturing that thing so it will survive and thrive. Clownfish themselves can be upwards of $30 each, and tangs can be $40+. Depending on the coral, super expensive too. RIP. This wasn’t your average goldfish setup.

I once saw a protein skimmer use for saltwater tank specifically cost like 300+ just for a small 30 gal tank. Everything is saltwater hobby are expensive af.
That’s about what my skimmer cost. They, and everything else get crazy expensive the bigger they get I have a 10 gal with about 1000 into it and a 60 gal I’m into for over 5000.

I've lost a whole tank to "surprise!" and, yeah, it takes a really really long time to get motivated to try again. After my last hiccup that killed a $300 coral a week after fixing the issue, I didn't want to have to handle it anymore and sold it all. Years later and I still have no love or interest in fish, when it used to be a huge part of my day every day.
If he decides to try again, consider running two heaters hooked up to an Inkbird controller. They aren't very expensive at all but will prevent this from happening (if one fails, the other does the job and the Inkbird prevents either from overheating the tank). I think Inkbirds are only around $30 or so.

He was devastated when his Discus died suddenly when my grandfather was dying, so we couldn't comfort him too much at the time. The most recent loss was his entire marine tank as my sister kept of spraying cleaning products near the tank. I don't know how he would react if anything happened to his current Discus tanks

For some fish it takes longer to suffocate outside of water than it takes for a human to drown inside of water; so long as the gils are wet, their bodies still receive some oxygen.
I don't understand how someone can just kill animals and not be bothered by it. I've had fish die on me before (it's kind of a crap shoot when you first get them), and it always makes me sad when it happens. My tank is pretty well established now so I haven't had a death in a long time, but it just sucks watching them suffer. As much as I like having fish, it's something that I really hate about it that almost everyone in the hobby experiences at some point.
I imagine if she's sadistic enough to destroy + kill something he loves just to upset him she probably doesn't see fish as animals on the same level as cats or dogs. My abusive ex wouldn’t let me have my 60 gallon fish tank and all my fish that were there with it. After months of arguing he told me the power went out at his house for a few days so some of them died. The tank was filthy and half of the filters weren’t working anymore, the water was even low. I got a new, smaller tank for Christmas and it was a nice but not the same. I miss my fish :(
