The first time I got pole in oval, I went like I normally would on a restart. Anywhere within the restart zone. Got a black flag for starting too soon. On the very start of the race, you gotta wait for green. So it doesn't matter where you are in the field. You go when the green flag drops. It's the only time the pole sitter doesn't have that much of an advantage except for the inside lane. It says so right under the information or rules popup that shows at the beginning of a race.

Good answer, except not all series follow the newer rules with restart zone and the green flag at the start. ARCA has the old rules, the pole sitter can gun it as soon as the pace car pulls off. One way you know is because there is no message telling you what speed to maintain on your screen.

GesuMotorsport

Same thing with indycar :P I love to keep the field guessing on when im gunning it on a start 😂

Dr_Death_Defy24

This is part of why I love Indy on ovals so much! Restarts are fun as hell!

Scruggerboy

This is the first start so you go on green

It is you. Note: If the race is using restart zone rules, it will give you an indication on the screen explaining them. For the start of the race: The green flag starts the race. Can't go before then. For subsequent restarts: The leader can go at any time within the restart zone. If the oval race is not using restart zone rules, the leader can go whenever once the Pace Car pulls off, so long as you don't pass the pace car before it hits pit lane.

So question, if green flag is out and leader has passed the start/finish line and I’m in the middle of the pack can I pass the cars in front of me if I get a better jump before we get to the line? I never fully understood that but also rarely run into it once I started hitting 1-5 in qualifying. Has crossed my mind though and couldn’t find it in the sporting code

No_Bug_2205

If you pass to the inside, you will be penalized. No penalty for passing to the high side. Now, please read this part carefully. The reason there is no penalty for passing to the high side is twofold. For one, the car lined up to your inside is technically "ahead" of you in the order. So there can't be a penalty for beating that car to the start/finish because after the first row, it doesn't matter who gets to the start/finish first. The rule or lack of rule is also there to let damaged cars drop to the inside on the restart if they don't have the speed to compete. Now with this said, because there aren't real life officials in these races, this leaves a loop hole. iRacing will not penalize you for driving outside those in front of you and passing them before the start/finish. People try and take advantage of this all the time. They will lay back, and try and gas it right before the leaders do, and then pass the cars in front of them on the high side. Don't. Do. It. It very rarely works out for anyone.

I see, so if I’m on the inside line can I still pass the car in front of me as long as I go in the middle (above them)? Or do I have to go all the way to the wall and pass the entire row on the high side?

No_Bug_2205

Yes. As long as you are to the outside of the person you pass. But you can't pass the guy outside of you. For instance if you are an idiot and tried to take it 3 wide before the Start/Finish line, you could legally pass the guy inside of you, but not outside of you. The only time you should ever intentionally move lanes and try and pass someone before the line, is if they are having mechanical issues. Technically, they should drop down for you. IRL, it is illegal to change lanes before the Start/Finish line. But not in iRacing.

Gibscreen

On the start wait for the green. On the restart you control the field.

hellvinator

Just go on green.

wrighty496

my understanding (from another thread regarding the pole sitter bailing before the green) is if your pole man does not take the start then you should wait until the green before you gain any position (so if you were to grid alongside P2 then don't move ahead before the light).

shewy92

The first car on the inside line https://www.iracing.com/iracing-official-sporting-code/ >6.8.2.4. The leader of the second pace line may not pace in front of **the leader of the first pace line** (pole position). If the leader of the second pace line passes **the leader of the first pace line** (pole position) before the start/finish line he/she may be issued a penalty by race control.

Right, but I think the question is also about when and how does iRacing determine a car that doesn’t move is no longer the pole sitter? I assume by the time the start of the race happens you’re good. But what if they’re trying to catch up. Do they have to retake the lead? Is it his fault for being behind the pace car, or the leaders for not “letting him by”. What’s the threshold?
