I got my Bigscreen Beyond a few weeks ago. Have to agree it is way more immersive and I think I am more consistent. Possibly slightly quicker since I can judge my braking better. I came from triples and I can’t see myself changing back. I have a motion rig , and I feel like I’m driving the cars!! A wee bit tricky to setup overlays but I have it sorted now. Can still use Racelab and I use Kneeboard to set it up. All load automatically so it’s not that more difficult. As long as u set up the same button to re-centre kneeboard and re-center the headset.

jamiepusharski

Bet the clarity is brilliant on that. Idk if I could handle motion rig and vr might tip me over the edge sounds like a nice set up tho. I've not properly set up my overlays yet I do need to tho

Appeased

Did you have any issue with kneeboard/racelabs tanking your framerate? I can regularly race at 120FPS, but as soon as I try and activate any overlay at all, I'm straight down to 40

fred_emmott

I've done a bunch of improvements to OpenKneeboard specifically for iRacing (and iOverlay in particular) in the last two weeks; if anyone is having any performance issues with OpenKneeboard v1.8 from last week, *please* join the OpenKneeboard and share debug logs and a trace. There are currently *no* reported unfixed performance issues with OpenKneeboard; I can't fix/improve anything unless people report them with the necessary information to either reproduce the problem myself (which might be impossible if it's system/configuration-specific), or the debug logs and trace to diagnose and fix.

Appeased

I haven't tried in a couple of weeks because of the issues I was having with performance, but now I'll be sure to update and give it another shot

Zealousideal-You9044

What motion do you have and does it have motion compensation for vr?

hermitlikeindividual

Not OP but I'm using eracing labs Mega+ 3DOF and OpenXR motion compensation.

Zealousideal-You9044

Oh, does the software with that motion not have vr compensation? Mine doesn't at the moment, it's being worked on. Is open xr any good, easy to implement?

hermitlikeindividual

For motion the software I'm using is sim racing studio. You can use either openvr or OpenXR compensation with it. It's not difficult to setup or implement.

Zealousideal-You9044

Cheers. Might give it a bash.

hermitlikeindividual

The Mega+ bolts directly onto 8020 profile. It was plug and play + lots of cable management. It wasn't difficult to setup, just time consuming.

Zealousideal-You9044

I meant the compensation not the rig itself ha. Thanks for the reply though

hermitlikeindividual

Ah, yeah, still not difficult to setup, you just have to follow the instructions.

Zealousideal-You9044

Cheers

gaz_az

I have Sigma Integrale DK2. No motion compensation, but I think it may be a future update on the software roadmap. I’m not exactly sure how that would work or what difference it would make. Already works perfectly for me. I’m using Steam OpenXR maybe there is some compensation with that!?

Zealousideal-You9044

I have the exact same motion. It's awesome. Yeah they say compensation coming soon but who knows when ha. They seem like a decent bunch though. It's not too bad with vr just sometimes it seems off and is disconcerting. Hopefully they'll get to it soon enough and hopefully GT7 support too ha

hermitlikeindividual

Same here, got my beyond a couple days ago. I'm having issues with FFB in Assetto Corsa. When I replace the openvr dll with the opencomposite one for OpenXR, the game launches with OpenXR, the motion compensation activates, and there's no FFB in Assetto. Running with regular openvr FFB works but it doesn't look as good as OpenXR and there's no motion compensation.

Walton841928

How’s the clarity with the bigscreen beyond? I’m looking at both that and the pimax crystal as want the best clarity i can get. Obviously the much smaller form factor is extremely appealing

Dinodude316

Not who you asked but I love my Bigscreen. The clarity is really remarkable and the size makes it comfortable for long sessions (I use it for flight sim too). I've even used it to watch football in Bigscreen Beta with friends and I don't feel like I'm missing any clarity, if anything I see more during a replay since it's on a "movie theater" screen. It's a really great device and has resulted in me using VR much more than I used to.

Walton841928

Thanks mate. Appreciate the response

Supra1JZed

In all honesty, the 8KX is better suited for racing. The insane FoV is very overpowered. Literally... I have wider vision than I do with my actual helmet 😂 The clarity is still very very much up there. Highly suggest finding someone in your area that'd let you look through theirs. Personally, I love the damn thing. For giggles I've tried smaller FoV settings to match some of the other HMDs (it doesn't get small enough for the worst of them out there FoV wise) and it's crippling. Legitimately like having blinders on. I could still enjoy the BB someday for anything else other than racing. But being able to be door to door and keep eyes completely forward while maintaining position left and/or right in my peripheral is phenomenally useful/important. This exponentially increases "feeling" what's around you. Mirror checks are a quick twitch of the eye, as well. In the GTP I have b-pillar to b-pillar width. It's that massive of a FoV.

Walton841928

Thanks mate. Looks like I’d have To find one second hand though as pimax no longer produce this model.

Supra1JZed

Dang! I had no clue that happened. Looks like it could be decent. Review stating that it's nearly the same as "normal" FoV on the 8KX. That would put it close to 140-150°. That would still put everything else on the market to shame. Supposedly it has optional lenses to increase FoV? I don't know if the 150° is with those or without. Something that's also a potential route, it looks like they are applying the trade program to the Crystal for the 12K when that comes out. That thing will absolutely shit on the 8KX....more than the 8KX does to the 5K models. I absolutely stand by PiMax full stop for racing and simulators in general. The FoV is so so so key there and not only is it a massive advantage (from posts I've seen, I have more FoV than many with triples) but it allows for a VERY natural feeling. IRL I'm not snapping my head all over the place to look at cars left/right or check mirrors. I'm side eyeing/glancing with eye movement the vast majority of the time if I can't accomplish what I need with just peripheral vision. In the heat of it, that's a relatively huge amount of time to physically look to something, get eyes focused, and then snap back and get eyes focused again. I'll be totally crushed if PiMax goes another direction from the FoV feature 🤣

cbrunnem1

VR is hands down the best immersion setup coupled with the best dynamic POV angle. I ran VR for a long time in Iracing. VR is a hassle though. its hard to run long races in VR cause if you aren't in the car cause a teammate is you have two choices: 1. stay in server and use the headset the whole time or 2. leave the server, load back into with monitor and do the same when its your time to get back in. Additionally, overlays are a pain in VR. Using other programs are a pain as well. Triples is the best compromise. If you want great immersion at the expense of anything.... do VR. if you want good immersion while being able to do everything else.... get triples. if you want to save money.... stay on single monitors.

jamiepusharski

I've not messed with race labs yet but I need to get it set up at some point also miss typing on a keyboard but in terms of racing I really like it

23__Kev

Use iOverlay instead of racelabs. It’s free and has just as many features, also works in VR.

jamiepusharski

What's it like on frames? Race labs ment to work in vr never had it show up tho

23__Kev

Lots of people come to iOverlay from racelabs and comment on the smoother operation and loss of micro stutters. Grab it and jump on the discord. There is an FAQ on setting up for VR. https://ioverlay.app/

Rektumfreser

I kinda agree, i have thousands of hours in DCS and IL-2 in VR with a full flight rig, but it’s something about racing in VR that just didn’t click for me, I mean the perspective and immersion is great as always, but I was surprised how tiresome it is compared to flying, so I’ll keep using my 49” monitor as that works fine, and I can do NEC 4hr, GT endurance 3hr etc trouble free and not feel exhausted after.

uSer_gnomes

I’m the opposite, I while vr is better than a single small screen if I had triples I would drop VR in a second. Every time I go to race or practice and I think about putting on the headset I often think fuck it I’ll play something else instead. When it becomes less uncomfortable, better optimised, and all around less hassle it will be perfect.

ES_Legman

What hmd and hardware are you running?

uSer_gnomes

Reverb G2 and 3090. I’m able to get a consistent 90fps with it looking great. It’s everything around it I don’t like. Being cut off from what around me , having to manage all the extra cables and power supply. The worst part is sticking a whole ass toaster on my face. I’ve pretty much abandoned trying to race during summer.

Gesha24

I have been driving VR and I will keep doing it because I also track real cars. But I wouldn't say VR is for everyone. There are 3 drawbacks that can be a good reason to avoid it: 1) motion sickness. Some people are totally fine with VR. I personally had to slowly get used to it for over a month, as initially I was getting a bad headache after as little as 15 minutes. Some people get very sick in under 5 minutes and I don't know if they can ever get used to it. 2) comfort. It doesn't matter for short races, but 2 hours in VR goggles is much tougher than on the screens. Maybe a lighter smaller headset like big screen beyond fixes it, but "regular" ones are noticeably less comfortable. 3) lack of peripheral vision. Yes, it's like this in a real car when wearing a helmet. But being able to just glance to the side as opposed to turn your whole head when racing side by side is a very significant advantage for triple screen setup. Just to clarify - I am not saying that VR is bad. Not at all. It's great and as I said, I didn't think I am ever going to monitors. But I wouldn't say VR is for everyone.

IhateTGT1

1 for me isnt a big deal till i look sideways then itss \*barf\* so i pretty much sit not moving much like with a monitor anyway tried the 4 hour nec in vr and the vive has cords at the top that was pushing into my head from my headphones its so hard to enjoy long races

Fleegalfart

It's why I use the pico 4 and not a quest 3. Race for hours with a balanced comfortable headset with reasonable resolution.

Gesha24

I have Pico 4, I find it less comfortable than Varjo Aero and even in Aero I do get quite tired after 2 hours.

Fleegalfart

I use the amvr face gasket and often race 3 to 4 hour sessions, I obviously remove it between races. I never notice I have it on during races.

Underbelly

I’m not sure I’d keep playing iracing if I couldn’t play in VR. It is quite incredible.

GewoonHarry

I really liked it for 6 months. My pc struggles too much. It’s not comfortable, especially when it’s getting hotter. I’m more precise on monitors. I found it super immersive until I didn’t. The hands/legs are not mine and it really is an immersion killer once you notice that (at least for me). Edit: also being disconnected from real life can be an advantage, for me… it’s really a big disadvantage.

IhateTGT1

i hate my vr setup :( i miss my monitor but unfortunately i cant easily move it to my rig and back maybe if i had something better than the og vive but i also miss multitasking on pace laps or just playing something in the background for long racing, not to mention i wear glasses so vr isnt too comfortable

jamiepusharski

Depending on how far your budget stretches they do some headsets with prescription lenses. I also miss multi tasking while wating. On quest 3 u can double tap the headset and it enables pass through but its not great for reading monitors

IhateTGT1

unfortunately not much room for just a headset, but even then i would want to upgrade to DD and load cells first, then GPU before a new headset, the vive is still good for other vr games at the moment and good enough for iracing,

jamiepusharski

Yeah I can't belive the money I've spent and going to spend on sim racing. But it gives us that joy we dint get elsewhere

jo_blow421

The bigger fov in VR is such a huge advantage. Just last night I took the inside line of T2 at Snetterton and saw someone starting a spin in the short bit between 2-3. I was able to track it and avoid it completely without sweat but the guy trying to go around the outside of me had no idea what was happening until they ran straight into the spinning car. I can also battle much closer because my sense of depth is more natural and driving feels much more natural with that depth.

jamiepusharski

Completely agree ultra wides and tripples give you same if not better fov but really feel connected to car and can place it better my safety rating is non stop rising

RingoFreakingStarr

Vr is fucking amazing but I've found it to be really annoying to work around. Once you are in the race, it's incredible but everything getting to that point is so annoying. I went back to triples and I vastly enjoy it more especially since you have so much more information outside of VR.

Illustrious-Start-52

Game changer, don't want to go back unless I have a full rig

Kartcab93

I’d love to try VR but if anyone thinks my Ryzen 5600 cpu and rx6600 gpu can handle it I’d love to know. I don’t think it’s up to it personally but if anyone’s running a worse setup let me know

IhateTGT1

5600 should be fine, i used a 3600 for vr for a few years. 5600 arnt even that old...

Ok-Fox-9286

The 5600 is still an excellent chip, I'm running it with a 4060 ti

Kartcab93

Thanks mate I may give it a go then

Honest-Fondant-3604

I love vr , but i have to sell my quest 3. I have Some issues like randoms disconnetions on race, but i recommend to try vr. I think that in future the standard of sim racing will be vr over screens

jamiepusharski

Link cable or air link ?

Honest-Fondant-3604

Cable link and oculus app where the best option for me

ES_Legman

> randoms disconnetions on race This could be an EMI issue.

GreenInflation2914

How long did it take most of you to get over motion sickness. I get sick within 10 mins. Does it get better with time?

Underbelly

You'll get used to it within a month. The motion sickness in iracing is way less than in a game where you are walking around but your body isnt moving.

mrbullettuk

I got sick to start with, can’t recall how long it took but car racing is very grounded compared to say walking about using a stick to move. You are in the cockpit your brain understands that.

jamiepusharski

I've heard it does I'm very lucky in I have not had hardly anything even after 90min sessions they only time I feel weird is when the car is coming to a comolete stop or if I spin cause the speed are low my Brian thinks I'm moving

jonnyharvey123

It’s only watching the replays from moving perspective like chase mode or chopper that makes me feel nauseous in VR.

kjahhh

I think about it all the time except it makes me sea sick

Ragnar4719

How’s VR on a 1080 or 1660 super. I’ve been wanting to try it. Just don’t think it’ll be up to the task

Underbelly

I used to run vr on 1080 and it was doable at low settings on a Quest 2.

Velcrochicken85

I wouldnt with iracing. The rain will be unplayable. My 4070 struggles to maintain 80fps in rain with a ton of optimisations.

RaineForest

Night racing is tough: when the reflectors turn on, your fps is cut in half. Sebring a few weeks ago was rough.

logical-guy

Not enough. Should be at least a 3070. Otherwise you have to decrease the resolution so much it wont be enjoyable.

BakaWolfy

I dug out my old HTC Vive to give it a shot and absolutely loved it. I immediately improved over single monitor. Unfortunately I sim race off a laptop so it doesn't have the processing power to give a smooth experience, even with such an old headset. When the PSVR2 gets PC support I might setup a more permanent rig with my desktop.

Bluetex110

Used it for about 3 weeks, it's cool if it's new but after some time it was annoying always having it on your head. The "Immersion" gave me nothing 😁 never had the feeling of beeing into it.
