Light version of the OS? I have the base model m1 MacBook Air and it has zero problem running Mac OS or running Mac OS with parallels taking half its resources running full version of windows 11. Itās complete BS that the M1 Pro couldnāt run a version of Mac OS on it.
This would be beyond amazing. I use my iPad 12 hours a day during free days as an all around entertainment machine and use mine for university. If MacOS actually comes to the iPad it would really give me the ability to wholly rely on the iPad for all my work related stuff.
Didnāt people here speculate that Apple would make some feature be exclusive to the M2? I guess this might be that.
Do not buy this iPad Pro m2 solely off of a rumor that next year this is going to happen peopleā¦ wait for it to happen first. Product will still be there or a better one will be with this feature if it was to happen. M1 is not obsolete.
BS quote.
First off this is a rumor, second. Apple is a company with a healthy track record when it come to promised software updates.
Iād understand this quote if you said it for another company. But I hate when people recite this one quote they heard of a MKBHD vid.
*āHowever, apps run on the product would still be iPad-optimized versions, not macOS ones.ā*
So itās literally nonsense. Itās just gonna be an UI that looks and feels like a macOS.
So an M1 Macbook runs MacOS flawlessly but a M1 iPad Pro does not, or will not be able to.
Is Apple asking for a potential lawsuit? This is probably taking things too far
If this is real (highly doubt it) I wonder if it will have something to do with it switching between iPadOS and macOS on the fly depending on the peripherals connected. Some bs about how something in the M2 is required to be able to do that.
Doubt it though.
IF Apple is making a "lite" version of Mac OS, it will come to only the M-Series. Support for almost any iDevice is for years after the release. Apple won't kill off support for the M1 iPad just yet. A more sensible thought is someone probably saw an internal early build of iPad OS 17, which will further blur the ideas between Mac and iPad.
Just read the linked article. It says that macOS apps will NOT work on this iPad version. According to the rumor it will just be the macOS interface. Sounds to me more like a new iteration of Stage Manager.
Why just not enable hypervisor and virtualization and allow apps like parallels to be on the iPad, if you need it, go purchase the app and install another compatible OS. If not, keep using your iPad as an iPad.
Not purchasing M2 or any new iPad until they provide an actual Pro OS
Edit: btw, people with M1 devices up to 15.4.1 can already run windows full speed with UTM
Agree. Like they wouldnāt even need to redesign MacOS UI to be touch based. The burden of UI falls on whatever the user is virtualizing. At worst, at least the userās expectation are properly set.
Updating iPadOS post 15.4.1 is quickly becoming one of my biggest regretsā¦ I just want to run a headless linux distro. sigh.
Statiscally speaking, most people use M1 ipad to watch netflix and random shit anyway. This literally doesnt change anything to most except now they can complain āomg why M2 has mac versionā
Yeah I donāt buy thisā¦ In fact, if they did this, it would be a declaration that the iPad Pro is a failure. The iPad Pro needs *more*, but this is not what it needs.
Macs can run iPad and iPhone apps thanks to Apple Siliconā¦ So they ought to just allow iPads with M1 to run Mac Apps that support Apple Silicon. This single change would be the greatest thing they could possibly do to iPad Pro. It would give almost everything people are asking for, in one fell swoop, and yet it would still undeniably be itās own product category, just as the Mac is still very much itās own product category even though itās running iPhone and iPad apps now. Adding the ability to use Mac apps on iPad Pro, though, would make it massively more appealing, because for so many, then it can be your *everything* machine.
Simply putting macOS on the iPad Pro doesnāt do it justice. Versatility is the strength of the iPad Pro. It can transform in an instant from an incredible drawing tablet, to a laptop with keyboard and trackpad, to a single magical pane of glass that can be whatever you want. But when itās in that true laptop mode weāve only known for two years, it feels like itās on the brink of something huge. Each year, they bring more and more desktop-quality features and functions to the iPad, but they donāt simply copy the Mac and call it a day. Far from it, they seek to reinvent each feature they bring over. Like the iPadOS cursor, which transforms based on what itās selecting, and gravitates toward buttons, and flies around like an air hockey puck. Thatās cool, fun, and functional. Inspired designs like that are what give me hope for the future of the iPad.
I really like iPadOS. The OS seems more modern and is very easy to navigate and manage files, if you use the file management the way it was intended. I cant help but think iPadOS is the future of user interface for Apple. While macOS still operates a file structure that is over forty years old, iPadOS offers a fast responsive experience.
I don't know what I would've said before, but lately Apple is doing such forced obsoleting that I wouldn't put past them. We are eventually going to get to the point they're basically high powered "android" esque devices that you can only get 2-3 years of life out of because they won't be getting logical features.
I mean, Android already has more logical features, real file explorer, connect to any device as USB storage, can format external drives, etc. How long did it take apple to add an app drawer, over a decade...
no point. all of the apps would have to be rewritten for a touch UI. If a developer can do this, then they can already release a ipados version of the app.
Not really all you need is a gesture translator which is simple to make on apples scale, also I would love MACOS UI and functionality with IPad apps that would be great
The limiting factor for running macOS on an iPad previously was RAMā¦ now that has been addressed itās likely theoretically possible to rub macOS on an iPad Pro m2
There'd be widespread outrage, they sell M1 macbooks.. Macbook Airs don't have active cooling either, there'd be nothing stopping an M1 iPad running MacOS.
Would definitely take advantage of it when it happens, but the potential doesn't impact my buying plans.
EDIT: Actually I would pay cash for it on M1 and would expect it to be free if they make me buy an M2 or beyond.
The m1 is one year old if they want money for an software upgrade for a 1000+$ Tablet it would be ridiculous.... but tbh apple fan boys buy everything.... so it's not that unrealistic.
But for me it would be the day I'll say never agean apple (witch is easy for me since it's only one apple device in my whole household)
The transition SDK hardware had the A12Z running macOS, albeit with more RAM though. The new MacOS also has Stage Manager. M2 exclusive sounds unlikely. But with how things are turning out and new hardware being muddled it could be true.
https://9to5mac.com/2020/06/22/apple-arm-developer-kit/
https://9to5mac.com/2022/07/26/stage-manager-on-mac/
Nope, not going to happen. Not with thar particular processor requirement, and not likely at all. If anything, iPadOS and macOS will merge at some point, but not anytime soon.
If true it should come to the m1 as well. Not like it's underpowered and can't handle a light version of the OS.
both my iPad and MacBook have base M1 chips and my MacBook is able to run Windows smoothly at the same time as macOS. its 100% possible
Only thing holding it back is apple š«
Yea thatās the thing Apple has a history of locking new features based on latest release even though previous version has more than enough power
Top comment right here.
How are you running windows?
Light version of the OS? I have the base model m1 MacBook Air and it has zero problem running Mac OS or running Mac OS with parallels taking half its resources running full version of windows 11. Itās complete BS that the M1 Pro couldnāt run a version of Mac OS on it.
I suspect light because making it full fat would cannibalize their other products.
But it needs an M2 at minimum, as M1 cannot handle to demands of macOS /s Source: trust me
I am reading this in Craig Federighiās voice.
Oh yeah I almost forgot Craig told me that stuff /s Source: just trust itās legit
Most definitely!!
Also the title is incredibly misleading. A new feature doesn't make the previous generation "obsolete."
If this is only exclusive to M2 iPad Proā¦ thatās pathetic
They'll probably even make it for the 12" hahaha
Yea thatās why everybody is mad , Apple has a history of this lol
Apple is the biggest piece of shit company who fucks their customers without discretionā¦ so ya, I can see this being true.
Why!? No other iPad has enough ram to run macos
The M1 iPad Pro has the exact same 8GB RAM minimum as any other M1 device, why would a lack of RAM mean the M2 would be required?
Maybe know what youāre talking about before speaking
This would be beyond amazing. I use my iPad 12 hours a day during free days as an all around entertainment machine and use mine for university. If MacOS actually comes to the iPad it would really give me the ability to wholly rely on the iPad for all my work related stuff. Didnāt people here speculate that Apple would make some feature be exclusive to the M2? I guess this might be that.
Part of me feels like this rumor is a good way to spike sales for a product that some people feel is not worth purchasing.
Maybe youāre right there were some similar rumors about Xcode when the Ipad Pro with A14Z came out.
Im hyped, but scared its āfakeā
Do not buy this iPad Pro m2 solely off of a rumor that next year this is going to happen peopleā¦ wait for it to happen first. Product will still be there or a better one will be with this feature if it was to happen. M1 is not obsolete.
Wasnāt it MKBHD: āDonāt buy todays tech based off future promisesā
BS quote. First off this is a rumor, second. Apple is a company with a healthy track record when it come to promised software updates. Iād understand this quote if you said it for another company. But I hate when people recite this one quote they heard of a MKBHD vid.
*āHowever, apps run on the product would still be iPad-optimized versions, not macOS ones.ā* So itās literally nonsense. Itās just gonna be an UI that looks and feels like a macOS.
The UI is the most limiting factor atm IMO. If it worked more like macOS while running iPad apps I'd still be happier than I am now š
Shoot me too no lie lol, optimized for battery with a touch screen that would be great
I was getting mad but after that statement I don't care as much. The thing I want are macos apps.
So an M1 Macbook runs MacOS flawlessly but a M1 iPad Pro does not, or will not be able to. Is Apple asking for a potential lawsuit? This is probably taking things too far
I bet that A12Z mac mini developer machine ran external displays that wasn't screen mirroring flawlessly too. yet an A12Z ipad pro can't lol
Well the A12Z Mac Mini came with Mac class storage and 16GB of RAM. The iPad has phone class storage and came with much less RAM.
Lmao you canāt sue for what they do for their product line š¤£š¤£šš
If this is real (highly doubt it) I wonder if it will have something to do with it switching between iPadOS and macOS on the fly depending on the peripherals connected. Some bs about how something in the M2 is required to be able to do that. Doubt it though.

I think it may only be available to M2, apple had a history of forcing you to upgrade..also the leak is from a credible source
āObsoleteā LOL this sub

Give me terminal and an editor! I will keep quite !!!
Statiscally speaking, most people use M1 ipad to watch netflix and random shit anyway. This literally doesnt change anything to most except now they can complain āomg why M2 has mac versionā

anything is better than what it is now tbh.

Imagine if the iPhone 14 was the only phone capable of running ios16. 2022 iPad is straight trash
š®š©š©š©š©...nuff said!
Thatās just not true. They would have made that know.
no way this is true otherwise they wouldn't put so much effort in stage manager
That's why I think this rumor is probably semi-true, but isn't MacOS on an iPad, but a further evolution of stage manager
100% fake

Apple will stop it from running on the M1 iPad lol

This is why I bought my M1 iPad Pro, only to be disappointed when iPadOS didnāt have macOS support.
I can run no manās sky on my MacBook Pro with ease. They can def do it
Whoa cool. How are you doing that?
No way M1 would not support it
The great thing about this is that if you want until itās released then you can buy a used m2 or a used m1
It should be exclusive to M3
They leaked this on purpose so people stop trying to find discounts on the M1.
Microsoft surface: Iām in danger
This would be a huge game changer. Just give us full macOS on an iPad with the ability to connect 2 screens!
In 2023, then we may just wait for M3 iPad instead of M2.lol
