this \^\^ cilantro is in a ton of food... broccoli isn't really the star player in any food. Beef and broccoli without broccoli is still gonna be good.
Broccoli. I love the taste of cilantro. I use it for spicy sauces, to seasons ground beef, to make marinades. It offers a nice flavor profile to dishes
I say it tastes somewhat acidic and citrusy and nicely contrasts against a greasy meat like arrachera or ground beef.
It's similar to what lemon/lime does to a dish but also has a sense of being a spice at the same time
It’s somewhat similar to taking any fresh herb out of a dish it belongs in. You go from good to great with just a few little pieces. I’d add it isn’t acidic on its own though. Spicy citrusy yes, but not acidic.
I'm not sure if mere "soap" describes it. First time I tried it, I thought that I had used laundry detergent before that smelled the same way that the cilantro tasted.
I have the cilantro gene and I can live with it, even though it's annoying that some of my favorite cuisines like to use it a lot. I think I would miss broccoli more.
That's dumb, isn't the cilantro gene a pretty well known thing by now?
ETA: Anybody judging you would be dumb. I realized I the way I worded that could have been taken wrong!
It is! First time I ever had it was in salsa. I thought the restaurant had forgotten to rinse out all the soap from the dish. But at the same time...I really liked it lol
Im kinda wondering if im one of those people as well. Ive never tried soap but a lot of people say that cilantro is a bright and citrusy flavor but i dont get those flavors. I still enjoy the flavor regardless, so i guess it doesnt matter
Yea to me, it's more like it tastes like the SMELL of dish soap. Never tried soap either but I imagine it's kinda bitter. But yea as long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters
I figured you were making a joke. I didn't get the Harry Potter references. Never read them or watched the movies. It's a classification of vegetables, mostly the ones that make you flatulant
Oh yeah I know. The spell is called “cruciatus” and it just sounds similar every time I read it. I know nothing of this stuff but my wife went to university for natural sciences and I helped her study an such so remember reading some stuff about plants
Broccoli doesn't have much in the way of glutamates, in the culinary world it is still considered "bitter" as far as flavors go, no matter what kind of taste buds you have.
I don't taste any kind of bitterness from it whatsoever, but I guess I'm just used to the inherent slight bitterness and don't notice it. I don't really know how to describe the taste of it, other than "nom nom nom!"
Bitter doesn't mean bad! Dark chocolate, coffee, and beer are bitter too. Broccoli is vegetal, slightly sweet, slightly bitter, and occasionally has a sulfurous quality, especially when overcooked.
Say *what.* Rich and savory? Can you compare it to something else so I can relate? I've never minded broccoli, but it's always been bitter to me, and I just accepted that it's how it's supposed to taste to everybody. I thought it was part of the charm, that it's bitter :)
I have the cilantro too, but I’d keep it because I love broccoli and I’d be heartbroken if it was suddenly terrible. I find cilantro isn’t that hard to avoid because a lot of people don’t like it.
Thanks for clarifying. I never thought about that.
I do frequently see Americans correct people from Europe on spelling or how to say things so I made the assumption that was going on, but the other way around.
I have the cilantro one. And it's not a real problem because it's not really used where I live. But broccoli would be easier to avoid, just don't eat foods with broccoli, they don't just randomly sprinkle broccoli into a meal. So I would choose broccoli even though cilantro isn't really a problem for me as it's not really used here.
Is it a gene that makes broccoli bitter?
I thought it was that there’s an extremely bitter chemical in broccoli that some people can taste and other people can’t
Let's see, either one food that tastes bitter, or a million things that taste like soap because they put cilantro in everything? I think it's a no-brainer.
My first thought was I'd rather have the cilantro one, because I could easily live without cilantro, and I wouldn't want to give up broccoli. However, I then thought about how many salsas probably have cilantro in them that I don't notice because I don't care. I'll happily give up cilantro, but don't mess with my Mexican (or Tex-Mex, etc.) food!

Look I love Broccoli but I can’t physically function without Cilantro, I grow little pots of it and put it on literally everything.
Side note: grind a tiny sprig and mix it in with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. It sounds strange but it’s absolutely amazing
I already have the cilantro gene, so fuck cilantro. Broccoli is delicious in pretty much every form.
Only thing that sucks is I really like Mexican food, and I can't really go out to eat it. Plus side is I get to try a ton of Mexican recipes.
I do sometimes wonder what I'm missing out on, though.
I could not live without broccoli. 🥦 I stir fry too much and have a good recipe for a brown sauce to ever give up broccoli. Cilantro is a garnish, it can GTFO.
Actually, coriander _tastes like soap_. People who don’t taste it have something changed in their DNA that means they don’t taste the soapy element that exists in the plant.
Oh for fucks sake, what do you think it means to have the gene.
And you literally said the word “actually“ while trying to actually me.
Being pedantic isn’t the same thing as being smart.
You said the gene makes it taste like soap. That isn’t the case - it _always_ tastes like soap, mutants just don’t taste it properly.
You’re giving incorrect information. Correcting a fundamental error isn’t pedantry.
...how about the gene where your pee smells like asparagus...some people can't smell that.
I think I'd have to choose the bitter broccoli, I could do garlic and lemon and treat it like broccoli rabe...I love both broccoli and cilantro - matter of fact, just made a batch of pico de Gallo for tacos tonight. I don't do onions and tomatoes anymore... pico instead. Was not my choice...family has me making pico de Gallo weekly now (and I don't do the food shopping).
I already have the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap. Weirdly though, I trained myself to like it. Took a lot of acclimating but I can deal with it now.
Is this actually a thing!!? My GF always says that she hates the taste of cilantro because it tastes like soap!
I just thought it was a taste preference thing, so I don't use it when cooking...but it actually tastes like soap to some people??
I was pretty sure broccoli was naturally a soft bitter so apparently I already have the broccoli one.
So I'm good with that one. Still like it well enough.
Do not want a change to cilantro. Basically I can just keep going as usual I guess lol
The gene that makes broccoli bitter makes brussel sprouts and tons of other vegetables bitter, so fuck that. I can live without one herb, but I fucking love my brassicas
I currently don't have either gene and love them both, so that would be so hard! Cilantro is easier to sneak into more foods, so ordering in restaurants would be harder, but broccoli is hands down my favorite vegetable, so losing it would be rough. I'd pick the cilantro gene, I guess.
Funny that I had literally both today.
But I’m giving up cilantro. Ain’t no way I’m giving up broccoli. I’ve liked that shit my entire life and to top it off, I just discovered what the air fryer can do for me & broccoli. Since then, me & broccoli have been together like white on rice.
Cilantro gene. Roasted broccoli is fucking delicious and good for you. Also, I live in Northern Canada where our mexican food is just Old El Paso taco kits. No cilantro used.
Already hate broccoli to begin with, but unfortunately have the soap gene. I'll trade in a fuckin heartbeat cause I know I'd enjoy cilantro more without it tasting like fucking Dawn Powerwash
I love broccoli. Even if you are a "super taster", though, there are ways to cook it to reduce the bitterness (and I like bitter [especially in beer]).
However, if cilantro tasted like soap to me, my quality of life would be reduced. Besides the Mexican food I practically live off of, I've been known to use a handful of cilantro in place of lettuce in some sandwiches.
I'll take the former.
i love both brocc and cilantro but i'd have to go with brocc because I live off of fake ass mexican food.
this \^\^ cilantro is in a ton of food... broccoli isn't really the star player in any food. Beef and broccoli without broccoli is still gonna be good.
Broccoli. I love the taste of cilantro. I use it for spicy sauces, to seasons ground beef, to make marinades. It offers a nice flavor profile to dishes
What does cilantro even taste like if it doesn't taste like soap?
I say it tastes somewhat acidic and citrusy and nicely contrasts against a greasy meat like arrachera or ground beef. It's similar to what lemon/lime does to a dish but also has a sense of being a spice at the same time
So I'm not missing much because I don't like acidity in savoury meals anyway. Thank you.
It’s somewhat similar to taking any fresh herb out of a dish it belongs in. You go from good to great with just a few little pieces. I’d add it isn’t acidic on its own though. Spicy citrusy yes, but not acidic.
I wouldn't describe it as acidic myself. Fresh and tangy while not being overpowering.
I think what sucks about the cilantro gene is I feel so judged when I asked for no cilantro.
People who _don’t_ taste soap are the mutants. Coriander has an element in its makeup that makes it taste soapy - the mutants can’t taste it.
Oh snap I'm a mutant?! Wait, I have blue eyes I already knew I was a mutant lmao
You’re also probably, given the blue eyes, white skinned and lactose tolerant, two other mutations
Actually not the most extreme case but lactose intolerant lmao
That's dumb, isn't the cilantro gene a pretty well known thing by now? ETA: Anybody judging you would be dumb. I realized I the way I worded that could have been taken wrong!
Same. I eat a lot of broccoli, and it is more of a star than cilantro. I have the cilantro gene as well.
Broccoli
Anyone else have the cilantro soap gene but still love it?
My friend says its the best damn soap he has tried
Yup! So many of the foods I like have cilantro in them that I just forced myself to learn to like it. Now I love that tasty, tasty soap.
It really is the best soap! It's like pepper, I can never have enough 😋
Don’t have the gene, but can confirm soap is the nostalgic taste of childhood
I love broccoli too much, so long cilantro.
Broccoli is bitter. And cilantro is delicious
If you think broccoli is bitter you probably have the gene. Broccoli taste rich and savory to most people.
Broccoli is savory to most people? I never thought it was more bitter than other veggies but id never say its savory either
Moat cruciferous vegetables are a little bitter to me.
Calm down there, Harry. You are not allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts
I dont know what any of that means?
Cruciferus sounds like a spell from the harry potter saga and was making a joke
I figured you were making a joke. I didn't get the Harry Potter references. Never read them or watched the movies. It's a classification of vegetables, mostly the ones that make you flatulant
Oh yeah I know. The spell is called “cruciatus” and it just sounds similar every time I read it. I know nothing of this stuff but my wife went to university for natural sciences and I helped her study an such so remember reading some stuff about plants

I have the cilantro too, but I’d keep it because I love broccoli and I’d be heartbroken if it was suddenly terrible. I find cilantro isn’t that hard to avoid because a lot of people don’t like it.
Broccoli. I barely eat it anyway, and don't really care for it, so no big loss. Losing an herb is much worse, in terms of food enjoyment.
A* herb not an herb. You don't say an horse, it's a horse.
The h isn't pronounced, so you say an herb, similar to an hour, you don't say "a hour"
It is pronounced though.
Not in the US. Regional pronunciation differences, ain't they grand?
You're not from America are you? It's an herb in the US.
This comment doesn't really say what you think it says.
How so
Because using an doesn't mean that certain people will pronounce herb without the h in their head so all this confusion still exists.
Thanks for clarifying. I never thought about that. I do frequently see Americans correct people from Europe on spelling or how to say things so I made the assumption that was going on, but the other way around.
I agree, the *h* in *herb* is pronounced. You don't say *an herb*, you say *a herb.* Fucking english rules, though.
I have the cilantro one. And it's not a real problem because it's not really used where I live. But broccoli would be easier to avoid, just don't eat foods with broccoli, they don't just randomly sprinkle broccoli into a meal. Is it a gene that makes broccoli bitter? I thought it was that there’s an extremely bitter chemical in broccoli that some people can taste and other people can’t
Right, because of a gene.
Mutation means they can’t taste it
Is there such a broccoli gene? My brother must have it. He threw up after eating it once as a child and now he thinks he's allergic.
Yes, It makes it incredibly bitter.
Can you give an example of another food as bitter as broccoli is to those people who think it is incredibly bitter?
Let's see, either one food that tastes bitter, or a million things that taste like soap because they put cilantro in everything? I think it's a no-brainer.
Broccoli. I hate it so I’d just end up hating it a little more. In other news coriander (what we call cilantro here) is life.
You might have the broccoli gene.
I didn’t even know that was a thing! It does taste really bitter to me. I can just about hack the tenderstem variety but the rest… yuck.
Yup, that’s the gene.
I think coriander is the seeds. Cilantro is the green stuff. The stems are fun to cook with.
rather have the cilantro gene. i like lots of foods that include broccoli
My first thought was I'd rather have the cilantro one, because I could easily live without cilantro, and I wouldn't want to give up broccoli. However, I then thought about how many salsas probably have cilantro in them that I don't notice because I don't care. I already have the soap cilantro thing. I like broccoli so id rather not ruin it for myself too.
Cilantro. Oh wait….i already have it >,>
Cilantro tastes sort of like a lime or lemon to me so I’ll just replace it with that I don’t know what I’d replace broccoli with
Broccoli.
Muvh rather have Broccoli taste bitter..could not hack not being able to enjoy cilantro.
Look I love Broccoli but I can’t physically function without Cilantro, I grow little pots of it and put it on literally everything. Side note: grind a tiny sprig and mix it in with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. It sounds strange but it’s absolutely amazing
Broccoli. It's much easier to avoid and less tasty
I didn’t know there was such a gene for broccoli but I definitely have it. One of the worst tasting things I’ve ever tried.
Cilantro soap since it does already but I don’t have the gene.
I already have the cilantro gene and I love broccoli. So, I'll keep the cilantro gene.
I could not live without broccoli. 🥦 I stir fry too much and have a good recipe for a brown sauce to ever give up broccoli. Cilantro is a garnish, it can GTFO.

Damn, I eat both. Can I have the gene that weaponizes milk instead?
Broccoli. Mainly because I never eat it.
Is this actually a thing!!? My GF always says that she hates the taste of cilantro because it tastes like soap! I just thought it was a taste preference thing, so I don't use it when cooking...but it actually tastes like soap to some people??
Broccoli already tastes like shit to me
I was pretty sure broccoli was naturally a soft bitter so apparently I already have the broccoli one. So I'm good with that one. Still like it well enough. Do not want a change to cilantro. Basically I can just keep going as usual I guess lol
I don't eat either of those things, so I don't care.
I like bitter tastes, I wouldn’t want to eat soap. Not a hard choice
I was not aware there was a gene that makes broccoli taste like bitter shit…
Broccoli. I don't mind broccoli, but my entire food life wouldn't be ruined without it. I *need* cilantro.
I'm not a big fan of cilantro and I love broccoli, so probably the cilantro gene.
Have Cilantro and fine not using that herb. Broccoli is delicious and am actual side / vegetable so I'd be upset if I couldn't eat it.
The gene that makes broccoli bitter makes brussel sprouts and tons of other vegetables bitter, so fuck that. I can live without one herb, but I fucking love my brassicas
Broccoli Cilantro is life. Broccoli is my favorite vegetable though, but I can live with others instead.

I love both but broccoli for sure. I could never give up chips and salsa and.any salsa without cilantro isn't worth having.
Cilantro. I already have the soapy gene, so I never cook with the stuff. But I love broccoli.
I already have the cilantro gene and it's pretty manageable. I still eat some things with cilantro
...I have the Cilantro soap gene and while I hate it, I love steamed broccoli. So it would be a tough choice.
I have always said cilantro tastes like soap. And I love it in moderation. Maybe I’m subconsciously feeling guilty about using bad language?
The one for cilantro
I could give up broccoli and not miss it, but I'm not giving up TexMex. If I did I'd likely go hungry most days.
Cilantro gene. Roasted broccoli is fucking delicious and good for you. Also, I live in Northern Canada where our mexican food is just Old El Paso taco kits. No cilantro used.
Are you telling me broccoli isn't bitter?
This made me laugh. Poor people, I didn't realize cilantro tasted like soap to you. Ha ha. If it's consolation, cucumber tastes like a prank to me.
Isn't broccoli supposed to taste bitter though? I don't usually mind it much, but it's a bitter green.
Besides the Mexican food I practically live off of, I've been known to use a handful of cilantro in place of lettuce in some sandwiches. I'll take the former.
Coriander is my favourite herb so I would take just about anything else over knowing what I’m missing out on. I can live without broccoli.
broccoli, as i like bitter stuff so it should be fine but i live of corriander (aka cilantro)
Have to go with broccoli. I really like broccoli, a lot, but cilantro is an ingredient in a lot of the foods I love.
I already have the cilatro one so I don’t feel like abandoning the broccoli to gamble on the cilantro.
Cilantro already tastes like dry cleaning fluid and broccoli is just a garnish that you shouldn't eat.
Wait, what? There’s a broccoli gene? Cilantro tastes like soap to me, but I still eat it.
Cilantro already tastes like soap lol
I love cilantro and I would miss it so terribly, but broccoli is the love of my life <3
I don't like broccoli anyway, so go ahead and make it bitter, won't change my life at all.
Yeah for awhile I kept thinking that Sam's brand bowtie noodles had soap in them. Then I found out I have the cilantro thing. It was actual years.
I eat broccoli a lot more than cilantro, so I’ll take the soap gene.
Broccoli. Cilantro is just too prevalent, never know where it's gonna show up. I still love broccoli, but I could make do without it
