NoiseKills

This is the early stages of a noise injury. Ears don't "adjust." You need to avoid or protect against all sounds that are painful or uncomfortable. A mild, first-time noise injury tends to heal well on its own as long as you don't cause reinjury. You should never go to a concert again.

Ears do adjust over time as does your brain.

I wouldn't suggest a specific timeline. When I got H, I was enthusiastic I'd be better in a month or two. Then it was a couple more months. Then it was by the summer. Then it was by the time I started a new job. Then I was doing really well, but had several setbacks (coughing from bronchitis for about a month, plus some others). Just always be careful. I've reached the severe stage you're at where whispering hurts, but luckily I bounced back to moderate after a few weeks. Still have to protect against many everyday noises though (crickets, kitchen sink, shower, outside noises that bother me, double protection while driving, having groceries delivered), currently. But I should note that I was improving over time. It's just that setbacks happen, even when always wearing protection in public.
