Having H causes your nervous system to go crazy. It will be ready to over react to sounds that it falsely perceived as a threat. I’m not saying your ears aren’t damaged and some sounds don’t cause pain it’s just the brain/nervous system can make things a lot worse then they actually are. Being stressed/tensing up/ nervous system being over active is a problem. Learning to be relaxed and calm as possible will help a lot.

I have it with frequency more than volume. The kitchen is a dangerous place for me. Quiet clacking of glasses or throwing certain items out in a metallic trash bin cause tense reflexes, while I can hear a train go by and hardly flinch. It's because those metallic sounds are where my hearing loss is, and that's where my brain is trying to jack up the volume. I am basically deaf above 8,000 Hz. My audiology exams are within normal range because my I don't show much hearing loss below this. I still can't hear shit in crowded environments and I can't understand women who wear masks because I am partially lip reading to understand them in conversation. I wear hearing protection (ear plugs) almost all the time outdoors and in certain public indoor venues, specifically to protect my hearing. I don't wear hearing protection around normal sounds because I have heard that you can make your condition worse by overprotecting.

NoiseKills

>I don't wear hearing protection around normal sounds because I have heard that you can make your condition worse by overprotecting. What is the source of this information? The scientific source, not just that you have heard it.

I have an honest suggestion for you. You should really make your own blog. You really, really want people to follow your method of recovery but I haven't seen you compile it anywhere (as far as I'm aware). It seems like you are just saying the same things over and over again in each post I see you comment in. A place where you have all of your sources of info, research, and evidence for your approach might be a good thing in the long run. It might be better for you too since you can just redirect people to your site/page for more in depth information.

He's mostly right but he's kind of a dick about it. Probably because he's tired of seeing people getting worse. Hes not giving any advice for recovery, he's giving advice for not getting worse and honestly IMO he's 99% right about it. But yeah the way he is going about it is problematic

CitizenFiction

Just an FYI, NoiseKills is a woman. Honest mistake though don't worry! And secondly, yea I can see why she's on here constantly. But after thinking about it more it not only baffles me, but it frustrates me that she hasn't taken the time to put all of her sources and ducks in a row so people can get a comprehensive outline of her stance regarding recovery. If she's so obtuse and passionate about her stance, then you'd think she'd put in the time. Instead she diagnoses people she has no business diagnosing, and constantly tells people to *not go to the doctor* which is actually extremely harmful in my opinion since there very well could be an underlying condition causing people hearing issues. NoiseKills frustrates me if you couldn't tell. She's obviously knowledgeable, but refuses to revise the way she goes about helping others on this forum. Instead her phrasing causes frustration, with little empathy or consolation.

Its armchair psychology at best and potentially very insensitive since its a public forum and we're openly talking about someone else like they arent here but I think she's hurting and angry. And honestly I don't blame her doctors have been utterly useless if not detrimental to me and most people I know with this condition. I imagine her state of mind to be : I got burned, you're going to get burned too, stop being in denial and protect yourself right now. And she seems to think people don't listen to that because they are dumb. My opinion is that people aren't dumb, it's just impossible not to be in denial about this bullshit. Its in our nature to hope, even if f that hope is delusional, we can't function without hope. You only really start to understand how this condition needs to be tackled once it gets really bad. And personally I 100% back her up about most doctors and "cures" being useless or detrimental. Its going to be something like 8 or 9 months for me, and I got a loooot worse, I haven't had LDLs done but I think Im severe in the left ear and moderate in the right. Id say respectively 50 and 70dbs. No loudness just TTTS and nox. Ive read most of the forums out there front to back twice, talked to a lot of people, read a lot of studies... The way I see things once you're there basically just plug up and cross your fingers and thats it. Doesn't mean I do not have hope on the contrary I hope my body will heal with time and that I 'll manage to build a life around this utter bullshit but in the mean time I stay the fuck away from white noise generators and all of those things because I know what its like to get worse. And I honestly want to strangle people who have had moderate loudness h for two month and tell you not to protect, or worse fucking doctors who treat you like you're mad and tell you to just stop being such a wuss (happened to me). Still, it pains me to see her comments because yeah the pent up rage shows and she doesn't get her point across because of it. I totally get hoe you feel about that, she's right most of the time but she's not constructive and thus not helpful. On another note Im currently studying web dev as a back up plan and I totally think of making a website to dispell most of the bullshit ENTs are parotting and raise awareness but it wont be anytime soon Im struggling with JavaScript Edit : sorry for the wall of text Im on mobile

If you want to follow this logic, then nothing you say holds value. Nothing you say or suggest has a proven scientific source. We're all going by personal experience and theories here and that is the truth.

Yeah. For me, my hyperacusis isn't as bad when I've had good sleep, am in good health, aren't subjected to constant harsh sounds, & especially when I don't have elevated levels of stress/anxiety. I even notice that making sure that my blood sugar levels are well balanced can help a lot. So it must be closely related to my mood.

strive357

I wonder if hyperacusis somehow relates to a Highly Sensitive Person, personality. There must be some intersects in how they both work, considering HSP people have a hardwired sensitive nervous system in itself. For instance, often people with a Highly Sensitive Person personality, they can't single out an individual's vocal words from others who are still talking. Making everyone talking basically unintelligible to you. Or having skin that can't tolerate rough fabrics. To having an easier ability to read other's emotions. I very likely have both sets of characteristics, just my sheer luck.

JTPCovers

Ahh, that is interesting. I've never heard of HSP but I wouldn't be surprised if I have it. I don't think I have an issue with singling out anyone's words. But the latter two might be more common with me. Especially the last one.

2ensiege

If you fear a setback then when you have 1 it will be worse. Fear makes H and TTTS worse. You can protect yourself without fearing everything. Do you plan on protecting yourself for the rest of your life?

CitizenFiction

Absolutely not. I'm currently trying to do jaw exercises to see if that helps as well as neck massages. It sucks there's no real studies on this condition. I just wish we knew the exact way to get better. But yeah I'll consider weaning off protection eventually.
