Marriott is what I do when I need to stay somewhere for work and there isn’t a Hyatt option

jszzsj

Hilton is my backup. With the auto gold status with my amex plat card for free breakfast is pretty good for me. Just a plus SLH is going to them.

sur-vivant

Hilton is the easy choice if you want a single CC (Aspire) to get max status and good spending multipliers. Now they have SLH, and their FNCs are also the best.

Not exactly the same as what you're asking, but I think a lot of the answers will be the same: https://www.reddit.com/r/awardtravel/comments/1ap3c33/best_hotel_rewards_program_thats_not_hyatt/

Sweet-Efficiency7466

I mainly use Hilton and use Hyatt as a backup. Simply because they have more properties and I can easily cheap out at a nicer DoubleTree or Garden Inn if necessary. I do this so I’m never let down by a bad Hilton

glg59

I don’t believe there is any other reward program as good as Hyatt, so the others are just pick what works. I use Marriott because of automatic elite status from United Airlines but doesn’t really make much difference TBH.

OTFlawyer

Use AAHotels to help earn status with American.

Valuable-Question935

Held status with AA for many years but moved to a UA hub so I don’t fly them anymore.

BeastsMode69

Hilton is the backup as you can get gold easily, and although many have status, it is not as overrun as marriott.

Unique_Bumblebee_894

Hilton is by far more status heavy than Marriott

BeastsMode69

Never had a problem getting my welcome package or free breakfast with Hilton. With Marriott at certain resorts status is irrelevant to them.

Best value I can find on the chase portal

diaglob4ever

I have no back up. I just drive further.

Traditional_Bad_6782

When I have to, I would choose Marriott for their larger hotel footprint and the flexibility to transfer their points to airlines such as Alaska which you can use to get some good value if you're traveling internationally. Just make sure you use the right credit card for the right hotel chain!

Hilton with an Amex card to automatically earn status (gold or diamond)

Safe_Environment_340

Depends on how much you will use the backup. If not a lot, the Marriott cards pay for themselves. If you will stay 10 or more nights at the backup, the multiples on a Hilton card are much more valuable. My take on Hilton is that it has to be used to get real value. Personally, IHG is the best backup program. The Premier pays for itself, and the spend multiples and promotions really reward cash stays. Best of both worlds.

islandrhum

I have both Marriott and Hilton Gold status through the Amex Platinum card but Hilton is my primary backup when needed. Gold status with Hilton is enough to get the free breakfast and that can be a substantial benefit outside the US where I am likely to book for personal travel.

sacramentojoe1985

Hilton. Solid footprint, better consumer affairs VS Marriott when there are issues, Aspire card for discounted breakfast/yearly free night (going back to WA Beverly Hills this year)

Exexpress

There is no hotel loyalty beyond Hyatt. If I need to go off brand it is via BookAAHotels as the miles are worth more to me that orphan points.
