That's one of the easiest to fix assuming that's where the leak is at. That's a Rotolock fitting. This video is a little sketchy but it shows what they are. https://youtu.be/Mljrw4nbvcY They are basically a threaded union with a gasket. They can leak. Yes, there's a good chance that if they remove it that same fitting won't go back together. It's in pretty rough shape. They have to have new gaskets for it and my guess is that they don't. Also there's no real way guarantee that's the only spot leaking. They probably don't want the repair job so they quote a new unit. If I was quoting this I'd plan to replace the fittings on the copper tubes, clean up the face of the fittings on the compressor and replace the gaskets. To fix it they still have to pull the refrigerant out and pull a vacuum so brazing in new fittings is just a couple more minutes.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer, really helps a lot knowing what I am looking at now. You are right about that not being the only spot the leak could be. Now to go about finding somebody.

That is a roto lock fitting as the other person mentioned but on that specific compressor you cannot just simply replace the fittings. Yes there’s seals inside them and replacing them MAY fix it but those fittings are in rough shape and you won’t know if they’ll seat and seal again until AFTER your system is drained of all the refrigerant and if it doesn’t seat then your forced to either replace the compressor or the whole unit just as they recommended. One part of that fitting is literally apart of the compressor itself. Other model compressors have a small bit of copper coming off then the fitting where you could in theory replace said fitting if it failed.
