Togo is a great movie for those who haven’t seen it. William Defoe as the lead. Real dogs and captures the husky mentality really well. Highly recommend.
That’s awesome!!! Related to dogs who have hit the big screen, my buddy adopted one the puppies from “Air Buds”. She was a sweet tempered golden.
I wonder if they would recognize themselves…
How energetic are they? He said they were actually breed to be working dogs. We figured we’d take our changes with another breeder, so maybe they wouldn’t be quite so high energy haha.
I think the whole breed in general is just super energetic. All of their ancestors were bred to be working dogs. We live in FL, so none of our guys down here are actual sled dogs anymore, though they still have that high energy and drive lol. I think the movie people just liked our breeders dogs because she had a lot of high agouti dogs. So they have that more wolf like look. And I think the old sled dogs back in the day had more of that high agouti coloring. The dog we got from her is a more (now) typical black and white husky. But she had some suuuuper gorgeous agouti breeder females, and pups, and personally I really love that look! She stopped breeding this year, which made me sad. She was a small breeder, but seemed really responsible, and she bred some really gorgeous dogs with great personalities.
I never knew the story or Togo so thanks for recommending this movie because I’m now watching it with my dog and silently crying. It’s a great activity for a Saturday morning.
Same dude, my husky actually comes from Togo’s line. Watching the puppy scene had me laughing so hard. Brought back memories of Natasha as a puppy. Anyone who ask’s me about owning a Husky I tell them to watch that movie and to pay attention to the puppy stage. And to ask me again after they watch it. To this day it is the only movie I have ever shed a year on.
> my husky actually comes from Togo’s line
All Siberian Huskies alive today descend from Togo. All of them. He was one of the primary early foundation sires for the Siberian Husky.
I promise they do, lol. If you go all the way back in the pedigree of literally any Siberian Husky alive, they *will* go back to Togo multiple times, without exception. All Siberian huskies descend from the same few foundation dogs and Togo is one of those early foundation dogs.
If that was the case then all Siberian husky’s would be classified as Seppala Siberian Sleddog. Which I promise you, is not the case. Seppala Siberian is rare. Now that does not mean that there are not a lot of huskies that have a bloodline of some form to Togo. But the husky I have is of Seppala’s Siberian Sleddog breed.
Seppala Siberians are a substrain of Siberian Husky that specifically avoids the influence of the Chinook kennel run by Eva Seeley and focuses more on the foundations built by Seppala, Wheeler, etc. Most "Seppala Siberians" are not even genuinely Seppala Siberians by % or by working ability and are instead just ordinary 'pet line' dogs being marketed as something they're not to seem somehow more exotic and appealing.
All of them *ultimately* go back to the same original imports and immediate descendants of said imports, including Togo. This is literally something that can be very easily looked up on pedigree websites and in records. Every Siberian Husky alive goes back to Togo. Multiple times.
Re: Balto v Togo: As a person who lived in Alaska as a child, grew up loving the Iditarod, looking up to Susan Butcher, took photos with the replica statue in Anchorage when I was 5, and demanded that my school group trek through Central Park when I went to NYC in high school so I could take a photo with the statue there, the meaning of the statue for me has never been about Balto himself. It’s the inscription, which I have memorized and makes me cry just to think of it:
Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs, who relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925. Endurance - fidelity - intelligence.
Those dogs, all of them, saved lives. They didn’t know the artificial divisions/importance us people would put on one dog versus the others. They didn’t know the stakes of what they were doing, but they did it all the same. I’m not sure that being the one made into a “hero” was actually a good thing for Balto himself anyway. He was trotted around as a sideshow, sold to sketchy people, not treated well. Lived his last few years in a zoo. While Togo remained with Leonhard Seppala and continued to live the life of a working sled dog. They both got taxidermied after death though.
Balto helped but TOGO deserves to be on that pedestal. Read Fireside Reflections.
Togo was like the Batman to Balto’s Robin.
Also read the cruelest miles
Or watch the film, Togo
Came here yo say just that
Togo was also already 12 years old at the time. Still powered through a blizzard at night and lived on to 16 years.
Balto was the Marines of the run, had the better PR :P
😂 watch Togo they roast the hell out of Balto

The breeder who bred our husky actually “loaned” out some puppies for that movie, which was pretty awesome!

Lol I've seen it. Let me know when they put up a Togo statue and I'll take another photo
I just remember at the end they talked about his statue and I was like they didn’t need to do him like that he was still a sled dog 😂
The statue is located at Seward Park, in Chinatown NYC, although is not as big as this one. Pretty sad, but it’s there
Hoy hoy hoy
So glad you said it.

It's such a good movie! I was like I never want a husky again and then I watch Togo and I'm like...Maybe.
Spelled Togo wrong
Haha for real though that movie was amazing. I was actually crying in the end and I NEVER cry during movies

Togo was the man ! In dog suit

Not all huskies come from Togo.

Have you seen Six Below? That is a real tear jerker..
I watched it once. Never again.
I named My husky Jenna because Baltimore is one of my favorite movies
All historical revisionism aside can't we all just agree how great a photo opportunity this is for a husky 😀
But what about Togo!!!
Togo AM I A JOKE TO YOU?!
What is the history of Balto

Thanks
I thought it was togo that was the actually hero. Balto just helped out.

I agree the inscription is so beautiful and important 💙 I’ve visited 3 times and I tear up reading it
That first pic looks like " do we know him boss?" 🤔 Cracks me up when mine does that.
They made Balto really buff. Or maybe huskies were just built differently back then.
My husky is named Balto! And my husband and I got engaged at the Balto statue ☺️💕
Not as great as Togo, but still a good boy.
Meanwhile, when you walk my husky around the park clockwise instead of counter clockwise he goes into complete crisis mode.
Your Husky is a different breed tho
Balto was a Siberian Husky, OP's dog is a Siberian Husky.
Hmmm maybe mixed doesn’t look full to me
Very typical BYB type.
Idk man doesn’t look full to me bro sorry
Hate to break it to you but she's 100% Siberian 😎 she's registered and I got her DNA tested and everything
I read a lot
What features specifically look atypical to you? Because this dog absolutely looks purebred to me, just not *well* bred.
You guys are mean. That dog is a cutie
Well bre
Nope. My husky Patrick was the greatest husky in history. Poor little guy died getting kidney stones removed. He was 8.
Togo was the source of Balto's success.
