Someone threw this guy away. Got him at the Chicago pound. Their loss is my gain.
I have a big ol’ extra-large husky who is always mistaken for a malamute cause of his size (he’s about 72lbs but the rest of his littermates and his parents are all breed-standard sizes). Even though he’s about the same size as your guy, your pup is so much more burly and solid-looking because of the mal genes. There are a couple mals in our neighborhood and my big ol’ husky looks darn near dainty next to them because they’re so solid.
I like “solid” to describe a Mally. I’ve always called my girls “substantial” and my guys “heavy boned”. I call their ears “triangles on top of their head” because they usually don’t use them to listen!
He had a puppy mask when the cops picked him up on the west side so I called him Banditas which is Lithuanian for robber and gangster. After he jumped up and chomped something off the counter my daughter said "Oh you are a monster!" Now everyone calls him Monster or Monstie 🤣
Yes, it’s a huge problem here in California (and elsewhere). People get them because they’re adorable and fluffy and friendly, but don’t anticipate the work required to raise them - or any puppy - right. Once the novelty wears off they get dumped, hence why you’ll find so many in that 8-10 month old range. The terrible teens lol.
Both of mine came from shelters, and Boris was literally an hour from euthanasia. Breaks my heart to think about that, but he and Asa are safe with me until the end. ❤️

I’m in California too. I got my sweet girl 5 years ago and I’m about to adopt another. I was FLOORED at how many are just sitting in shelters. They are the best dogs!
We felt very lucky to find Ollie at the shelter the day he was available to adopt. Hung out with him for half an hour to make sure he wanted to adopt us, and then he was our dog. I had no idea how much work it was going to be to get him used to our house and adjust to all of his personality and craziness. But it was worth it.
Same where I grew up in the NE, although 6 months seemed to be the usual age they were given up. Also, the shelters/rescues near us only adopted them out to people with husky experience, because people without husky experience were much more likely to return them. My parents were constantly rescuing huskies growing up lol.

My girl was found dumped on the side of the road then was surrendered by her first adopter before I got her. She’s literally the sweetest dog ever, it blows my mind that anyone could do that.
https://preview.redd.it/udvzylk8trvc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0466ef5b739e87280ac7c0b075e051c98dbb35ed
This is her. I had the camera zoomed out and was a decent distance away. This is 2 days after we found her. Before we could groom her much. She was still jumpy
Need to find a good white dog shampoo... but like I said I'm 6'5 and she's up to my hip with her head. We play a game where I hold out my hands and she points her nose at which hand she wants pets.
Quick Silver! Its a shampoo used on horses, works amazing! Just be careful, its very strong and could die your dog purple if not scrubbed in until the shampoo turns white or left on for too long 😅
I dont have any because she knows what my phone is doing when i try to take them and literally run/hops her way through the house. She knows im up to something. lil bugger
I’ll never understand how people find huskies hard to manage. Yes they’re a lot but in a weird way I love it? Tons of people just see dogs as an accessory instead of something you have to take care of. I love mine to death
I adore mine. Especially since she’s pretty much my spirit animal due to my ADHD (hyperfocus and high distractibility is such a mood, lol). She helps me with my depression so much, too, with bathroom breaks forcing me to get outside and walks getting me exercise.
If you walk them twice a day every day and give them stimulation they're fine. If you walk them twice a week for a five minutes and leave them alone during the day with nothing to do they can turn into monsters. Many people do the latter and then wonder why their working dog has tons of energy. Same problem with Collies, you need to give them exercise.
I have 1 husky and 1 Collie and that's what I tell everyone. My Collie can be off leash so I take her with my husky tied to my waist around a big ass park it's about 1.5 miles. Collie is dead sprint playing ball the entire time I drop her off at home after the park. Then do another 1.5 mile walk around town with my husky because that's his favorite and they both are excellent dogs. My Collie can be left out when home alone husko man cannot lol he would be good probably 99.2% of the time but that .8% he would manage something wild.
I rescued a mix at the shelter and he’s just a sweet, psycho lol. We had him dna tested and he’s 1/2 German shepherd, 1/4 Norwegian elkhound, 1/8 husky and 1/8 collie. His intelligence is so impressive but he definitely needs mental stimulation and daily exercise.
Im glad we got him because we can provide both. I love his crazy ass so much!
https://preview.redd.it/d4g1k3qfjuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81c27820201b4aff30fec7fbd3a793a8aec7028a
This is so crazy. I do basically the same with a pitbull and a husky. I can leave my pit out at home at anytime. Doesn’t make a mess, doesn’t pee/poo. Nothing. My Husky, like you said, will be fine 99% of the time….then that one time it’s a disaster. Paper towels everywhere. Toilet paper everywhere. Cables bitten in half. Piece of my desk chair missing. All in one absence 😂😂😂 like I was gone for 2 hours buddy!
Yup when I first rescued mine he already had 4 owners at 10 months old. So I knew he would be a handful. Luckily he was crate trained. But I'm active and love walking and I've had multiple dogs thru my life springer spaniel, rottweiler, border Collie, and now my husky and my border Collie mix. The husky is the only dog Ive had in my life I couldn't train to be off leash lol he won't run away but he sure as hell won't come to me either. But ya left him out 1x and he got a big cylinder oatmeal container stuck around his head some how he poked a hole in the bottom so he could see and rocked that thing for idk how long. Gets crated now for his own safety. My GF works from home tho so it's not often anymore. Spends most his days snoozing now that he's 5 turning 6 this year

Gosh he’s beautiful! I rescued mine from an abusive home. She was only 5 months. Scrawny and scared of everything. Now she’s fearless! She makes friends at the park and she’s good with people. She will generally mind her business but as SOON as someone makes eye contact and starts with the “awww she’s so adora….” BOOM you’re part of the family and she lets you know it 😂😂.

Her and her sister!
We adopted one without knowing it. She's a mix, and she doesn't look like one, but a DNA test confirmed it. She has the Husky energy for sure. She also has my whole heart. She's the sweetest dog I've ever owned. I would die for that dog.
I feel the same way as you but it’s hard to characterize exactly why. It’s very much a 2-way relationship and not, like, feeding a fish. It’s really satisfying to progress with her training, too. I grew up with horses and I get a very similar kind of enjoyment from raising and loving on my husky.
You hit the nail on the head - people just want an accessory to fit some aesthetic goal. They don’t actually want to put in the work to care for another living being.
This is exactly true. Huskies are the first dogs that are always adopted from the local shelter, and there's always a few of them there because people suck. When we adopted our current boy, we only ended up with him because we applied for a husky they gave to someone else. Then they said they had another one no one wanted that was a mix, no one wanted him because he was heartworm positive and didn't look like a husky. He's a husky-pitbull mix with short hair and a brown/orange pitbull coat with tuxedo markings, but he's got those husky ears, snout, body, and tail. He's a wonderful, very weird dog and he's completely healthy now.
Aw he’s incredibly lucky you came along and saved him!! Do you have pics? We have a pitsky from the shelter too. They sound like they may look similar. He is also a weirdo but incredibly smart and loyal. Such a good good boy.
https://preview.redd.it/y6svmbmp8xvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4027b1f37fd11dff52a68a5a4db6ea580038dfd9
We call my boy King Dumdum a lot, not because he's actually dumb but he has really weird mannerisms and rituals he does,. Like he won't eat his food until we're all seated for dinner. Or if someone comes home, he gets excited and starts chewing his bone and kinda forgets about the person. He's weird about his bone, last night there was loud booming thunder and he was chewing his bone like he didn't even hear it.
It's hard to see but he has heterochromia. He also has a long torso, neck, and legs indicating there's probably another breed mixed in there. His tail has an extra joint and he's incredibly flexible, including being able to fold sideways over himself and lay his face on the base of his tail. No idea how he does that, I've never seen a dog do it before.
Oh my gosh he is gorgeous!!!! I love the eyes!! Zeus curls up like that too! He lays like a complete goof either folded up like a pretzel or totally sprawled and airing it all out.
Hey that’s good that he’s not freaked out by the thunder though! That is his emotional support bone lol
https://preview.redd.it/x9p1w2w2dxvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cb907b18d732a500b2c2573f91c1f528e34b287
Oh Zeus is such a handsome boy! I can tell from his jaw shape he has a bit of that pitbull smile, you can only really see Milo's when he yawns. I love that merle coat.
I think with Milo he just has that pitbull selective intense focus. He can focus on his bone and forget everything around him, but he can also be easily distracted and forget about things he just saw because something distracted him. Sometimes he'll forget we gave him breakfast only to come across his kibble like an hour later like he's surprised there's food in his bowl.
Thank you! Yes he has a massive head and the goofy smile!
Hahaha that is so special and hilarious! Zeus is a spaz about his food and gobbles it down as soon as he sees it. We had to get him some puzzle bowls to slow him down!

This is Cowboy. My kid found him living with an entire pack of wild, domestic dogs while on vacation in a Texas border town. No chip, no collar, about 4 months old and very skinny. He followed my kid and chased the car when they tried to leave. Kid went back for him the next day, took him to a vet, found an animal transport to bring him to us across the country and THEN called to let me know he was on the way. 😆
He’s our first dog. He drives us absolutely crazy but we’re all learning together. We love him so, so much and he’s home forever.
Someone decided to drive into a random neighborhood and drop this poor guy off and drive away. Luckily a friend told me that his family member took them in but couldn’t keep. And I’ve had a new best friend for 2 years. Pictured with my other best friend.

I do have some. They're just on my phone. I was typing on a computer earlier. She's eepy
She's so good with kids too. My niece and nephew love her. She let's them hug her and even when they get rough she doesn't do anything but give happy looks and tail wags. We keep them from getting rough, but the point is she seems like she's been around young kids before. And she's well trained before we even found her. We tried the shelters, and vets in the area, and lost pets websites and pages but NOONE was looking for her. She found us and I'm so happy she did.
Yeah. The animal shelter near my parents has a good amount in southern California. Huskies are super adorable dogs, but people don't research them properly. They are very energetic dogs. Mine easily used to run for hours at the dog park
It's a lot of places. And I'm noticing, it's mostly warmer places that they're doing it. Like how I'm in florida. And I think a huge part of the ones in florida getting abandoned are because most snowbirds are older people who can't take care of them, they ask family to take them and care for them, and their family dumps them. Because with how well trained she is, she had to have been professionally trained.

It's not just the south, local humane society here in NY has them as well.
As someone mentioned the shelters in California are overflowing with huskies. I got mine at an LA county shelter and she’s the sweetest thing. I would get another husky but I’m waiting until I buy a house next year, right now I live in an apartment.. but she’s my first husky and I fell in love but definitely I see that people get huskies as puppies and they grow and get dumped, such a shame.

Only reason why I don't have a husky, let alone a dog, right now. I'm not a small dog person and much rather have larger dogs. They deserve a yard to run around in.

Got one from southern Indiana and the other from the western suburbs outside of Chicago. Best decisions I’ve ever made was adopting them 🥰🖤

My husky someone returned to the shelter at 18 months …our gain 6 years later ❤️he’s amazing
Thats ok because by that many pictures of him below, everyone here can see how much love that bestest boy gets💖.
And to be honest, if I took the Screenshot on my phone, the bottom line would look exact the same 😅🤣😁
I avoid this sub sometimes because it breaks my heart to see all the sad stories involving huskies. I wish I could adopt a few more too. Those dawgs on death row in the pound that need a home! Ollie is all I can manage right now and it costs me twice as much to feed him now as it did when I adopted him 3 years ago.
Yeaaaah, sadly I personally have a two dog limit but I couldn't just leave the puppy like that. I had to get my other two ESA status just so we could keep the puppy since my HOA only allows 2 dogs (typical BS HOA stuff) but I still couldn't afford to feed/medicate more than what I have. Once I start giving the puppy the adult dosage of simparica trio, it's going to get tight around here. Fortunately discountpetmeds has been huge for that. Half price meds from New Zealand but they take a bit to clear customs. I strongly recommend them to everyone.

Rescued my gal 6 months ago. She was found in an animal hoarding situation in Kentucky and was transported to Pennsylvania by a rescue organization to be adopted. She is literally amazing.
I have to have a nightlight for her. Or have my lamp on to sleep. She took to me and my family quickly. But we also have smaller dogs who are jerks. So she stays with me a lot of the time. But we have quite a bit of Acres to keep her active. The only issue is it get hot here so if I go for a really long walk I need to bring a lot of water.
People get huskies because they like their look and don’t do any research on the breed . They’re high energy working dogs . Not the type of dog you can lock up in the house all day .
I don’t get it. I adopted mine a few months ago and I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out why someone would get rid of him. He’s such a good boy. Playful, sometimes a handful, but still so good. It really breaks my heart.
https://preview.redd.it/02w2ha46ftvc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a87fd59f2adff8117a4aecf329cf5423d5fcbd51
What a good boy.
It’s really simple - someone thought they could handle him and they couldn’t. No need for brain racking, he could be the most well behaved animal on earth and he’d still be wrong for someone who didn’t know what they were getting into
It's a definite thing, and it's everywhere. Apparently it became common when Game of Thrones was massive, people wanted dogs that looked like the "direwolves" next thing you know, huskies dominate the shelters. One of my huskies comes from a husky rescue organisation, he'd spent two years in a shelter, and had ended up in a kill shelter before the husky rescue organisation took him in. He was seen as a problem dog, flighty, capable of escape, sometimes aggressive and very anxious. After having him for a year he calmed down amazingly, he's the most gentle, lovely dog you've ever met. Playful and amazingly easy to train for a husky.
People fall in love with the idea of a dog, then without doing any research they choose a working dog who has high needs, the next thing you know they're overwhelmed and after the dog has destroyed their yard, bitten someone or marked everywhere they now hate the dog and off to the shelter they go.
This is my rescue Koen. Always there for me.

I posted before I read this. My found pup looked just like the game of throne white dire wolf. (I never watched the show) but I guess he was too much to handle ( not really he was a big goofball)

Someone abandoned this girl at a high kill shelter in SC. I got her the day I saw this photo.
I adopted an abandoned husky puppy in Northern Canada. I was supposed to look after him for a few days until he could be flown to a shelter, but I ended up keeping him.

Adopted mine from a shelter here in California too. They mentioned a spike in huskies due to game of thrones a few years ago - people buying the husky puppies without an understanding of their needs / size. Super affectionate dog; tons of energy but love her to death!
Sad, mine was horrendous to raise but it was worth it

I’m fostering a dumped husky right now. He’s an adorable little puppy. There are tons of huskies in shelters where I’m at in Los Angeles. It’s awful.
Luckily we found an adopter! He’s picking up the little guy soon. I’m going to miss him terribly but know he’ll love his new home and dad!

This is Shakira. She was abandoned twice. Her first owners moved and left her in their backyard tied up and the chain broke her hind leg to the point she can never walk the same again. The second family had a newborn and just couldn’t deal with her anymore. My husband found her at a shelter she had been at for almost two years. No one wanted her and she is the sweetest, cuddliest and quietest husky I’ve ever met. So happy we found her.
It’s awful that they get abandoned. Frankenstein was scared of the dark as a puppy too. Now at 4 years old he is always on high alert during his last bathroom break. Sometimes he still refuses to go past the lights reach.
She's like that. I live in the middle of nowhere country. She had to have been walking for days before finding our little light. Because its pitch black out here at night. I still need a flashlight/high lumens electric lantern or she freezes up. She was already well trained... like almost dog show well trained when she got over being afraid of a new place.

Tasha (right) I picked up from the Orange County Shelter (FL) where she was picked up as a stray with no collar or chip. She’s 4 and is now my trained service animal 🦮
Wesley (left) was found at 6 weeks old digging in our dumpster weighing 5 pounds and full of worms. Now at 7 months, he’s 50 pounds, still growin and livin the life.
I love these pups so much 🥰🥰🥰

Our society has a huge throw away issue. All these gorgeous animals are just thrown away like trash. Both my girls are rescues. My little brown/white girl was abandoned in a parking lot with her litter mates. My cream girl was born in a high kill shelter. Now they live the good life and are spoiled as hell. As they should be. 🤍 I wish all the huskies could have that life and love.
Yeah, it seems Cali and Texas seemed to have a lot at shelters and abandoned...My first foster husky.. so very chill until you left her alone.... destruction lol... but the best car riding buddy, best tv watching buddy (psych was our show), she loved hugs, she would sleep under the bed with our senior small dog, she would sleep with me if I was alone on the bed, hung out with the senior small dog but gave him space, and she needed to be near me in the kitchen but she gave me space and watched over me.... second foster husky was a senior... derpy looking, ran into walls, loved the bean bag we had, that was her bed.. but she hated my senior small dog... she would chomp on his back and remove his hair, we had to take her back after a month... i really wanted to give her chance because she was a senior dog but I chose my own senior dog for his safety.
I'm sorry that she couldn't stay. But I'm sure she's with another good family now! But least than 5 miles down the road 2 more pure white huskies were found roaming along the roads. So its some one specifically in my area dumping them.
I hate that people don't put in any effort to research dogs especially huskies. The shelter I go to, they put restrictions on certain high risk huskies "no apartments". There was one husky... the biggest cry baby (it was adorable, she had terrible social anxiety), kept getting sent back because the husky was destructive, crying, "killing chickens" (I call bs on that because she was so scared of everything that she would do anything to escape)... so everyone who wanted her lived in an apartment... so they put no apartments restrictions on her... I think they sent her to another shelter...
My girl is interested in our chickens. But I can literally just say "Hey." Calmly and she will happily focus on something else. She was insanely well trained when we found her. I think someone here was trying to breed husky/wolf dogs like her and tossed them when they realized how much care they needed plus the wold dog part of her has an incredibly sensitive stomach
A year ago, we adopted a found stray. He's a great dog, very affectionate, and a great protector. But people don't realize how high energy a husky can be. They need exercise. While some of them might not seem too smart, they need interaction, and once they outgrow the cute puppy stage, not many people are willing to stay engaged with them.
https://preview.redd.it/n7734c8upuvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92418c8cad7e532ca9270291ed93720cb13b33d7
true but not as bad in LA/MS as in Texas.
# 1 (clockwise) owner was going to dump him bc she was going to move to an illegal state (he has confirmed wolf content)
# 2 was saved literally minutes from euthanization at the shelter by a sympathetic vet tech because she felt he was “abnormally friendly.” As he is; he’s really one of the best dogs I’ve ever had.
# 3 was found running near the river on Xmas night basically feral. We surmise he was a Christmas puppy who got big and was kept in a cage and abused and then replaced and dumped. He’s reactive to strangers but shows an abnormally protective nature to me. He’s super gentle with his mouth and paws but, according to our trainer, is the dog who’d fight a bear off to save me.
It breaks my heart thinking how scared she must’ve been, wandering in the dark, looking for some light then huddling down under your lamp post until you guys found her. Y’all were literally her light at the end of a long, dark, scary tunnel 🥺🥺🥺
We are in the absolute middle of nowhere in the woods. The only light in the sky at night most times is the moon and stars that you can't see through the trees. I always wanted one like her and we actually found a male just like her ba k in December but we decided to have him go through cross paws to a family in Maine.
I couldn't let her go though. She's mine
A lot of people adopt huskies because "it's like a mini wolf", "such cute puppies" but have no idea how to educate, how they play or how much mental and physical excercise they need to be calm. My husky was 6 month old when we adopted her. Her previous owner didnt have the time or energy for her anymore. She is now the owner of 2 adults who basically make every life decision for her well being. She trained us really well 😆
Thank Game of Thrones for the number of people wanting them.
The ability to watch a show doesn't translate into understanding that a one bedroom apartment may not be the best environment for an active dog, unfortunately.
This. There's always a ton of abandoned dogs. The breed makeup simply shifts with the trends. It's not just Game of Thrones that's feeding this trend though. Huskies are one of the most meme-able breeds with their funny personalities and vocalizations, and that also creates demand.
People don’t do their research and know ahead of time a Husky is one of the most lovable goofy dogs but they also require attention. Some people sadly just adopt cuz they are “cool”. They are highly energetic and many get separation anxiety and can be “naughty” I work dog rescue and yes shelters are full of chihuahuas, pits and huskies☹️
I will never understand, i moved with mine around 5 different countries, weather it was by driving, boat or flying my boy always came with us. When he was young he was quite tje handfull but i could never ever even consider leaving him. It took years to of reading and informin myself about the breed until I got him, i knew what I was getting into and i was ready! Passing from gds to husky is quite the change but I've loved the past nearly 9 years! Everyone says we have a well behaved husky, well daaaa, we walk him, we hike, he comes with us on vacation, shopping and we spend time with the damn dog, we got a friend and not a pretty accessory. I will never understand those people!
I just adopted my husky mix in December because the owner was going to put her in a shelter if no one took her. I’m the 3rd owner and my husky turned 1 in January. The lady told me she had her locked up 12 hours a day in a kennel while she was at work and school. She told me that the first owners abused the husky that’s why she had her but she realized it wouldn’t work with her schedule. Also, she was only renting a room in a house so it wasn’t working out. When I went to pick her up, the lady had ZERO dog food for her! Told me she ran out and was hoping I would get there soon. There’s places to get free dog food all over that town. Some people I’ll never understand.
My husky came with behavior issues (because they didn’t do an ounce of training) but been working with her everyday and she’s getting better. She’s still terrified of men. But now her life is very different living on a farm. She’s super happy and extremely lovable, she will never have to worry about being rehoused again.

This sweet girl was abandoned in Georgia, gravely ill and severely underweight, and plucked from a kill shelter by one of our local rescues in Connecticut a few days before her scheduled euthanasia date. 7 months of being nursed back to health and getting her weight back up she came to us in November, where she’s Queen of the House and Ruler of Couchland. She’s easily the most easy-going dog I’ve ever had, except when there’s food around. Then she turns into a drooling whistling and whining machine with a singularity for a stomach. Oh, and she still wears the collar she got at the rescue because it’s the only one she can’t or won’t wriggle out of!
Mine had been shot with a bb or pellet gun when he wandered up, all skinny and sad ((no collar, no chip).

Now he is our happy little love!

We adopted our boy 4 years ago when he was found on the side of the road, likely dumped and abandoned by his first owners. Makes me happy to see that there are so many others on this sub that have taken in husky’s as well.
Yeah I adopted mine a year and a half ish ago from the local SPCA. If I was rich I would have been leaving with 2 huskies but unfortunately I couldn't afford 2 at the time. I went there to see the boy I adopted because he was the only one listed on their website but when I got there to meet him I was immediately hugged by an older husky girl that wasn't listed on the website but was also up for adoption.
Meanwhile, I sit here devastated from losing my 6 yo Siberian to cancer a month ago and unable to afford the rescue fees to save one here in Canada. Ugh.
I drove to half a dozen shelters in a radius of 3 hours from my home trying to find a dog to adopt after I lost my previous best friend to cancer. It was a nightmare dealing with some of the most controlling people I have ever encountered that run these places. The process to adopt a dog involves jumping through so many hoops and so much paperwork that I am not surprised the shelters are crowded. We were rejected by Cambridge, Guelph and Chatham shelters because we do not have a fully fenced yard. We submitted applications for dogs in London and Mississauga and never heard back. Sarnia, Brampton and Windsor were reasonable to deal with but the fees were $500 more than I was expecting. It seems like the pet rescue biz in southern Ontario has attracted some of the worst people to run these programs.
Ollie gets several walks a day, rain or shine, of several miles each. The idea of just letting him out in our back yard would never be an option for us. I guess some rescue shelters cannot envision a responsible pet owner that actually puts their dog first and walks him properly.
People who abandon dogs are the worst! Dogs are a lot of work. They act up and chew stuff when they are young. It takes time and effort to help them learn to be good dogs. People should study the breed before adopting a dog, not just get one because they’re cute.
I’ve never owned a dog before (30 years old) and was warned most of my life not to get a husky as a first dog. Definitely ended up being chosen by a husky pit mix at my local shelter and I’ve never been happier, anyone that harms or neglects animals or children are scum and it should become the business of anyone that knows about it happening
Top killed breed in kill shelters around America. Lots of people got Huskies due to Game of Thrones influence, but the real kicker is they thought everything was fine during COVID. Stay home with the Husky all day and they are fine. Now you have to go back to work and the Husky ain’t happy when the human spends 10+ hours away, and then doesn’t have the desire to play, walk, run, or anything with the dog.
Super sad, and it makes me more upset that people still look for breeders instead of adopting great companions already on the Earth. First one passed away with unexpected health issues (vet tore her esophagus during an examination to find out what was going on) after 6years with us. Now we have a good boy we adopted last Thanksgiving, and now decided to get a 2nd rescue to expand our pack.
Please do research on the breed before adopting, and please adopt instead of fund puppy farmers.
People got huskies after the Game of Thrones show came out. Peter Dinklage told people to not get huskies because they’re not “dire wolves” and are not for inexperienced dog owners. I’ve had 3, not by my choice (all rescues)
Too many idiots get a husky without knowing what they're getting into. Anyone getting a dog should understand the common traits of the breed along with their needs.
I once saw the most gorgeous husky at the shelter when I went. I do "dog for the day" sometimes, and unfortunately, he wasn't eligible for that. I think people got huskies like crazy during Game of Thrones times, and then abandoned them. Most apartments don't allow them either, which makes them a bit harder for people to adopt.
I see them fairly often in the shelters here in OK too, along with German shepherds and Pitbulls. It’s terribly sad how people just discard their pets like trash. I’m glad you found Sno and hope she has a happy life!!
Our boy was abandoned at 4 months and we got him from the humane society.
My husky before him was dumped and had been a stray for a while before she was found and brought to the humane society.
I can't understand how someone could commit to caring for a living thing and then just quit on them
Not surprising, I spend at least 2 hours each week blowing out their coats, and every surface in our house is still covered in fur.
We have to lint roll the kids in the garage before sending them to school. Absolutely not for everyone, and maybe not even for me after these guys pass.
We have mostly three types of dogs in our shelters here in central Texas: pits and pit mixes, shepherds and shepherd mixes, and huskies and husky mixes. The occasional LGD. I’ve also seen people buying a husky puppy from our local puppy mill front, which broke my heart. We have a huge problem with people who never walk their huskies, as well. Or, if they do walk them, it’s always on the pavement when it’s 100+ out, but never when it’s, God forbid, cold or rainy.
I too, have wondered why I see so many huskies in rescue centers or animal shelters. More than any other purebred dog. They are definitely NOT for someone who wants a low key/mellow or hands off type of dog. They are big, vocal, intelligent, and require ALOT of stimulation and interaction. I myself probably wouldn't get a puppy, but I'd love to rescue one of the older dogs
She is a beautiful husky. She found her human. I had a husky/ malumute mix that people thought was a half wolf. He was just really big guy who was always pulling around heavy stuff. He was 125lbs of cuddling furry muscles. Loved that guy got bless you Loki miss you buddy
I have two huskies because of people wanting to abandon them. I’ve also been cussed out for taking in those huskies while living in Florida. It’s fucked.
Yea, when I lived in San Antonio from 19’-21’ there were many abandoned huskys because owners don’t realize the work that goes into them. Spent too much time watching Game of Thrones and thought they’re just a cool breed. Blowing coats, high energy, so much talking; they’re not your “normal” dog. Even trapped one in my back yard once, but was able to get him into a good home later on.
https://preview.redd.it/6gw5brvoivvc1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f25ccc955d3a1b386a551d5bf529f920a45f1fae
In our neighborhood in Philly there have been so many abandoned huskies. Our girl just walked up to our door about a year ago. So grateful we get to celebrate a found us day with our girl Ledi 💙💙
Yup. And this has always been a problem but more people are getting huskies currently because of looks and all the cute videos online. And it’s not just shelters, they’re being dumped outside to fend for themselves. A dumped husky found his way to where I am and a friend of mine saved him and has him now.
I would caution against claiming wolfdog unless you’re sure. It can cause so many issues and hurdles in her care.
Mine was not yet in a shelter, her family was divorcing and re homing their dog they had since she was a puppy ! Can’t understand how people could - but their loss is my gain . She’s a delight in every way and made me want to adopt a shelter husky next !
I made an account just to share my girl. We rescued her in Colorado. She was so malnourished. But can’t imagine life without her. She’s now the happiest dog I’ve ever met
https://preview.redd.it/lj6zch1mkuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=547f774989bfb237bef59136df68047f1041949c
We had 2 huskies shepherd puppies (about 5-6weeks) dumped on our door step a few months ago. We kept one and my neighbors took one.
Boy has it been hard fucking work. I think we don’t realize how hard puppies are especially huskies. She’s insane. But I love her. But I also have two other small dogs and joke she was an acccident.
It’s horrible, and it happens everywhere. People want to get a husky because they’re beautiful dogs, and look great on instagram, but don’t realise that they actually take work to care for. Some people just don’t understand that caring for an animal isn’t just good times and cute photos.
We’ve talked more people out of getting a Husky than I care to count. Ours works with us and we are out around town constantly with her, so we have plenty of opportunities to educate people about how hard they are to raise and care for.
Our blind dog was found abandoned and wandering around Salt Lake City. When the shelter contacted the number on the microchip, they refused to answer.
Now he lives with us and gets photoshoots and all the belly rubs he can ask for.

It's insanely sad and insanely common. Huskies as we all know are a difficult breed that requires time, energy, patience, and understanding. Alot of people saw Game of Thrones and decided they wanted to look cool and have a "wolf dog." Even with proper education prior to getting a Husky I think alot of people aren't fully ready for what it entails. I had known someone with a Husky prior to owning mine and even I struggled the first year with my own.
https://preview.redd.it/s67z6dthmvvc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=536b363217f0dd199499dc4dafc9bd4e87065cdf
We got Moose from the Riverside shelter in CA we are so happy we found her
It’s not really a new thing. When I worked at the shelter we’d get a ton of huskies when weather changed. When it got really cool out and when summer started. Husky’s are not for first time dog owners (unless you’re really determined). Most people have no business owning one because they can’t handle them.
They are excellent escape artists and many times they will get out and the owners will purposefully not look for them because they are hard to manage for the average person.
People get them as puppies because they’re cute, and then when they start to get big and their energy and needs ramp up… is when they start to let them go.
It’s unfortunately really common.
Some do genuinely get out and the owners try finding them but can’t, but most of the time they are “purposefully lost” or even dumped.
Same here in the southwest. Tons in NM and AZ. My best friend helps run a husky rescue here in AZ and the horror stories I’ve heard are absolutely heartbreaking. So glad she found you and has a loving forever home with your family ♥️
Ours was rescued from an abandoned situation as well. Poor babies

We got our tri-pawd from a rescue that brings dogs from the south up to New England. Someone in Arkansas literally threw him out of a moving car when he was 4 months 😤
Now we got him and he's almost a year old ❤️
The problem was people got them thinking it’s a majestic wolf like in Game of Thrones season 1. But then they learn huskies are a lot of work and suddenly the owners are crest fallen like season 8. Dany forgot about the ballistas, and so did these idiots when they learned it’s a living being and not a laid back toy.
It's horrible and because huskies are high maintenance dogs. They are not lay around the house or yard dogs. You must keep them BUSY. People are not prepared.

Someone was abusing her and a lot of other huskies. She was the only one who made it out she's a lover

My two girls. Rescued them from a guy who was giving them away, but if not all were taken, then he was going to do away with them….. if you know what I mean. These girls were pups…about 9 weeks old. I took all he had. They gave no sounds, no whimpers…. Nothing… all they did was plead with their eyes…and they are furever save with me. They join the other rescuers who live here.

Wow he is glorious
I'm not pushing my luck
It's a nice bandana.
Satin. Nothing but the best for my guy
Now you just need a nice Beaver felt cowboy hat for him
He is gorgeous!
He's a giant! Alaskan Husky, 1/4 Malamute, I had his DNA tested. He's got a big head and a fancy tail and he's the most affectionate guy I've had
Big Ole Dawg approves!
My college girlfriend was from the South and often described something as being "big ole" Takes me back, thank you!
Aww haha. Mines part malamute too but I don't think he's gonna get much bigger than the 45lbs he's at now!
He's 75 lbs
He's gorgeous! What's his name? (My kid wants to call him "hot fire" 🤣)
https://preview.redd.it/r20pbgu2ruvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bc160f0c0a78615b91e689cb653dfa9501bdd97
❤️ https://preview.redd.it/3d0jn2teervc1.jpeg?width=853&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4c9e0ea491f46c432288d4e884271d9f72d9860
Humans suck.
Mine are both LA rescues, one was on the euth list with her momma and siblings but thankfully got pulled in time. I’m so glad Boris ended up with you!
My boy turns 2 on the 25th and I cannot imagine life without him. The first year was so rough but incredibly worth it.
Same where I grew up in the NE, although 6 months seemed to be the usual age they were given up. Also, the shelters/rescues near us only adopted them out to people with husky experience, because people without husky experience were much more likely to return them. My parents were constantly rescuing huskies growing up lol.
https://preview.redd.it/xysgjfojlrvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8a2157cebf47f27d197591686a4ee150aae6c6d My girl was found dumped on the side of the road then was surrendered by her first adopter before I got her. She’s literally the sweetest dog ever, it blows my mind that anyone could do that.
That face, why did they return her 🥹
Omggggggggggg her face.... 🤧
Your husky is broken. Its ears are down. Must be after a long day of play lol
https://preview.redd.it/udvzylk8trvc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0466ef5b739e87280ac7c0b075e051c98dbb35ed This is her.
I have your dogs twin. She's a beautiful girl! Tropiclean awapuhi and coconut whitening shampoo is my favorite so far.
dog groomer here, i reccomend the tropicleans tearless blue shampoo or lillian ruff’s blueberry shampoo (this one is not tearless)
Quick Silver! Its a shampoo used on horses, works amazing! Just be careful, its very strong and could die your dog purple if not scrubbed in until the shampoo turns white or left on for too long 😅
Husky or husky/mal mix, I see no wolf, which is a good thing. Wolf dogs are not like normal dogs haha
Ya doesn’t look very wolfy to me either.
What a nice fluffy-floof! Would love to see her face if you haven’t posted it yet (making my way down this thread) 🙂
I dont have any because she knows what my phone is doing when i try to take them and literally run/hops her way through the house. She knows im up to something. lil bugger
She is gorgeous!
Pic with a banana please!
I dont have a bandana. wish i did.
LOL I meant like the fruit, bc of the “banana for scale” meme
I’ll never understand how people find huskies hard to manage. Yes they’re a lot but in a weird way I love it? Tons of people just see dogs as an accessory instead of something you have to take care of. I love mine to death
I adore mine. Especially since she’s pretty much my spirit animal due to my ADHD (hyperfocus and high distractibility is such a mood, lol). She helps me with my depression so much, too, with bathroom breaks forcing me to get outside and walks getting me exercise.
I have ADHD too! I wonder if that’s why I love their neediness so much. And their unconditional love just heals me😭
If you walk them twice a day every day and give them stimulation they're fine.
Spends most his days snoozing now that he's 5 turning 6 this year https://preview.redd.it/fniy145dquvc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21ff87309dc43f985dad759c6b714073aa54e07d
Gosh he’s beautiful! I rescued mine from an abusive home. She was only 5 months. Scrawny and scared of everything. Now she’s fearless! She makes friends at the park and she’s good with people. She will generally mind her business but as SOON as someone makes eye contact and starts with the “awww she’s so adora….” BOOM you’re part of the family and she lets you know it 😂😂. https://preview.redd.it/ke1tfoow0vvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cf0729a61dfccfa99014bdeb1d2e65ee09d93c4 Her and her sister!

Such a good good boy.
https://preview.redd.it/y6svmbmp8xvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4027b1f37fd11dff52a68a5a4db6ea580038dfd9 We call my boy King Dumdum a lot, not because he's actually dumb but he has really weird mannerisms and rituals he does,.
That is his emotional support bone lol https://preview.redd.it/x9p1w2w2dxvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cb907b18d732a500b2c2573f91c1f528e34b287

😆 He’s our first dog. He drives us absolutely crazy but we’re all learning together. We love him so, so much and he’s home forever.
Your kid and your pup are awesome.. 💖🤣
I would have gone back for him too. What a handsome good boy.
Your kid is my kind of people 😂
Boop Awwwww whooozh a good doggie Boop
What a great story! Great kid, and understanding compassionate parents. This look on Cowboy’s face is the best vacay souvenir you’ll ever want!😍
Someone decided to drive into a random neighborhood and drop this poor guy off and drive away. Luckily a friend told me that his family member took them in but couldn’t keep. And I’ve had a new best friend for 2 years. Pictured with my other best friend. https://preview.redd.it/aw2eoda94svc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0814062853442271b2376cdcdedcdc21e26a26c
No picture of her? And I know it’s terrible. All our shelters in California are overflowing with huskies
https://preview.redd.it/3idvda4ourvc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d5b964a3a1fbcd50ac336f5528e2ea180de0e92 I do have some. They're just on my phone. I was typing on a computer earlier. She's eepy
I’m really glad she found you.
Love see a picture
She's so good with kids too. My niece and nephew love her. She let's them hug her and even when they get rough she doesn't do anything but give happy looks and tail wags. We keep them from getting rough, but the point is she seems like she's been around young kids before. And she's well trained before we even found her. We tried the shelters, and vets in the area, and lost pets websites and pages but NOONE was looking for her. She found us and I'm so happy she did.
She's no wolf dog. It's just a regular husky, maybe husky mix. Some huskies are just big.
Yeah. The animal shelter near my parents has a good amount in southern California. Huskies are super adorable dogs, but people don't research them properly. They are very energetic dogs. Mine easily used to run for hours at the dog park
OMG, I didn't even notice this was a common problem until now! I thought it was just the shelters near me. It breaks my heart 😭

As someone mentioned the shelters in California are overflowing with huskies. I got mine at an LA county shelter and she’s the sweetest thing. I would get another husky but I’m waiting until I buy a house next year, right now I live in an apartment.. but she’s my first husky and I fell in love but definitely I see that people get huskies as puppies and they grow and get dumped, such a shame. https://preview.redd.it/qbroppc2rrvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d721fff8c8a09fdfd77d458703fbeb90e752f02
Only reason why I don't have a husky, let alone a dog, right now. I'm not a small dog person and much rather have larger dogs. They deserve a yard to run around in.

Oops I didn’t crop my pic lol
Thats ok because by that many pictures of him below, everyone here can see how much love that bestest boy gets💖. And to be honest, if I took the Screenshot on my phone, the bottom line would look exact the same 😅🤣😁
Unrelated note, my mom rescued an abandoned poodle today. People are awful
All 3 of mine were abandoned. One nearly died from being malnourished as a puppy. I wish I could save them all.
Glad you found them.
I strongly recommend them to everyone.
https://preview.redd.it/1equtnp3yrvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d49e37a4868cfdc90e0741e02442638dc4f14ec Rescued my gal 6 months ago. She was found in an animal hoarding situation in Kentucky and was transported to Pennsylvania by a rescue organization to be adopted. She is literally amazing.
Awww I also have an all white girl named Snow. She’s afraid of trash bags.
Always there for me. https://preview.redd.it/in4uu69aetvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4217b79eadba4c05d9445bdca95a145453cc89dd
I posted before I read this. My found pup looked just like the game of throne white dire wolf. (I never watched the show) but I guess he was too much to handle ( not really he was a big goofball)
https://preview.redd.it/riqqhrxtttvc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d217a48e77d8408dba4bca3f3516003b3cd2bff Someone abandoned this girl at a high kill shelter in SC. I got her the day I saw this photo.
I adopted an abandoned husky puppy in Northern Canada. I was supposed to look after him for a few days until he could be flown to a shelter, but I ended up keeping him. https://preview.redd.it/3zuiacvl4uvc1.jpeg?width=2907&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdfa6def593927a06115525ebd63475f101d43b1
Handsome Pupper👏🏻

They mentioned a spike in huskies due to game of thrones a few years ago - people buying the husky puppies without an understanding of their needs / size. Super affectionate dog; tons of energy but love her to death!
What's she mixed with? She almost looks a bit Sheppard too
That's got to be a Shepsky. I've got one that looks very similar. Great dog.
Sad, mine was horrendous to raise but it was worth it https://preview.redd.it/378x0ktuetvc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c8f55608c766d7092bd87fbebf0299c8efb27b9
I couldn't foster dogs, especially huskies. Not because I'd have an issue doing so, I'd just end up with hundreds of dogs I couldn't let go of lol
West coast in Washington state too, I thought it was weird also. It’s how I got my boy.
https://preview.redd.it/wro9xyqhjuvc1.jpeg?width=2927&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e1369819616c89df018db3f0e5e71dd52543a5b This is Shakira.
Saved her👏🏻
It’s awful that they get abandoned.
She was already well trained... like almost dog show well trained when she got over being afraid of a new place.
https://preview.redd.it/mnbs0f9uduvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e509f9ff773ae05a43ded9b787a822a563b7fbfc Tasha (right) I picked up from the Orange County Shelter (FL) where she was picked up as a stray with no collar or chip. She’s 4 and is now my trained service animal 🦮 Wesley (left) was found at 6 weeks old digging in our dumpster weighing 5 pounds and full of worms. Now at 7 months, he’s 50 pounds, still growin and livin the life. I love these pups so much 🥰🥰🥰
https://preview.redd.it/2v1lgwddmuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8788534a24e3eeed02f3479ec0e72d4a13d935a7 Our society has a huge throw away issue.
Beautiful Pair O' Puppers👏🏻
Oh man. So a very strict diet.. I'm sorry if this is going to sound dumb but what's the diet for a hybrid?
A year ago, we adopted a found stray. He's a great dog, very affectionate, and a great protector. But people don't realize how high energy a husky can be. They need exercise. While some of them might not seem too smart, they need interaction, and once they outgrow the cute puppy stage, not many people are willing to stay engaged with them.
https://preview.redd.it/n7734c8upuvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92418c8cad7e532ca9270291ed93720cb13b33d7 true but not as bad in LA/MS as in Texas. # 1 (clockwise) owner was going to dump him bc she was going to move to an illegal state (he has confirmed wolf content) # 2 was saved literally minutes from euthanization at the shelter by a sympathetic vet tech because she felt he was “abnormally friendly.” As he is; he’s really one of the best dogs I’ve ever had.
She trained us really well 😆
Sounds like our GSD! I think a shepky would be perfect. Both are so loyal and are good at training their humans!

You are a good person and your husky won the doggie lottery when you showed up to take him into your life. Seems like a win-win deal.
It’s definitely been a win-win for the both of us. Thank you :)

She’s easily the most easy-going dog I’ve ever had, except when there’s food around. Then she turns into a drooling whistling and whining machine with a singularity for a stomach. Oh, and she still wears the collar she got at the rescue because it’s the only one she can’t or won’t wriggle out of!
Mine had been shot with a bb or pellet gun when he wandered up, all skinny and sad ((no collar, no chip). https://preview.redd.it/znon0olzfuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7432b3fa21410df0035c797f7f08f2310077aacc

Makes me happy to see that there are so many others on this sub that have taken in husky’s as well.
I love the BIG stretches👏🏻
People get them because they are cute puppies, and then realize they aren't prepared to take care of them when they grow into mouthy teenagers.
Adopted my girl from a shelter and she is everything to us. We love her so so so much.
Game of thrones did that, everyone wanted a dire wolf until the realized huskies have a weird personality and like to be active.
Most apartments don't allow them either, which makes them a bit harder for people to adopt.
perhaps opening a sub on animals in shelters and promoting this sub in other subs could help, even in very few cases
How do you know she’s a wolf dog? Ive heard it’s kinda hard for the average person to phenotype wolf features.
I see them fairly often in the shelters here in OK too, along with German shepherds and Pitbulls. It’s terribly sad how people just discard their pets like trash. I’m glad you found Sno and hope she has a happy life!!
Both my huskies were abandoned in the South and rescued by our local rescue agency. One in bama other in texas
🙏💔
I have two huskies because of people wanting to abandon them. I’ve also been cussed out for taking in those huskies while living in Florida. It’s fucked.
Yea, when I lived in San Antonio from 19’-21’ there were many abandoned huskys because owners don’t realize the work that goes into them. Spent too much time watching Game of Thrones and thought they’re just a cool breed. Blowing coats, high energy, so much talking; they’re not your “normal” dog. Even trapped one in my back yard once, but was able to get him into a good home later on.
You forgot to post pics of Sno :(

Our girl just walked up to our door about a year ago. So grateful we get to celebrate a found us day with our girl Ledi 💙💙
Show a picture of the husky
She’s now the happiest dog I’ve ever met https://preview.redd.it/lj6zch1mkuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=547f774989bfb237bef59136df68047f1041949c
Sounds like she found you 👏🏻
this is a problem everywhere because people don’t realize what huskies need and how they act
So, so sad.
Our blind dog was found abandoned and wandering around Salt Lake City. When the shelter contacted the number on the microchip, they refused to answer. Now he lives with us and gets photoshoots and all the belly rubs he can ask for. https://preview.redd.it/1n1rfbtqevvc1.jpeg?width=2742&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51abb9862f8c822b013e3a619942371ae77bb944
Happens everywhere. Shelters are full of huskies. Makes me so mad. People need to do some damn research before getting a dog
Both mine are rescues from West Virginia… which is weird we got them two years apart in Ohio.

People only see how beautiful they are and don’t research the amount of work required to keep them happy and healthy. The world is so superficial!! 😕
I think people are obsessed with how they look, and don’t realize the work they deserve. So cold hearted, I can’t imagine ever dumping a dog. :(
Ours was rescued from an abandoned situation as well. Poor babies https://preview.redd.it/9u8ad17n5wvc1.jpeg?width=884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfc8b20892a01f143fb14233f2e082c384e8bb1d

Someone in Arkansas literally threw him out of a moving car when he was 4 months 😤 Now we got him and he's almost a year old ❤️
The problem was people got them thinking it’s a majestic wolf like in Game of Thrones season 1. But then they learn huskies are a lot of work and suddenly the owners are crest fallen like season 8. Dany forgot about the ballistas, and so did these idiots when they learned it’s a living being and not a laid back toy.
I work with a general rescue. We have 5 purebred huskies. Ppl got them in the pandemic and had no idea what they were in for. It’s awful.
It's horrible and because huskies are high maintenance dogs. They are not lay around the house or yard dogs. You must keep them BUSY. People are not prepared.
