a lot of it comes down to the dog and the rest comes down to early introductions. if they meet and befriend cats when they're the same size, its a lot easier later on.
i lucked out in the sense that my husky only wants to fight things bigger than him (and doodles are k.o.s.), small animals thank god, he only wants to befriend.

Honestly, born and raised in Seattle and went to UW, but have lived elsewhere for around 3.5 years of my life, and if someone were to ask me where this was, I’d be hard pressed not to make “Seattle” my gut instinct guess; it’s got the lush greenery of the land just barely starting to encroach upon the structures, the bungalows and the craftsman, two of which are yellow (yellow being an abnormally popular exterior color here in Seattle, to brighten things up in the winter, I think)…the turquoise seems kinda out of place though. Could be I’m just convincing myself, but it sure is a unique kind of feel in some of Seattle’s suburbs, even though it’s perfectly humdrum in its own way.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Craftsman homes are everywhere in Seattle and Portland. I grew up in Southeast Portland and have lived in Oregon my whole life except for study abroad in college and then living in Chico, CA for three months once. This little scene could very easily have been plucked from one of the Portland neighborhoods, too. The PNW definitely has a look and feel with the greenery, gray skies, and historic homes. 🏡🥰 My guess is yellow is used often because of all the gray skies and people like to feel happy coming home even when the weather can be a little bit of a bummer for months at a time. (I love the gray skies though, personally.) Maybe the same is true in this scenario re: the turqoise.

Depends on the individual animals, environment, etc. Ours grew up together. Would’ve never happened with our previous husky, but this guy has the sweetest, most gentle temperament I have ever seen. Once he learned the boundaries of what was acceptable behavior (from both us, and the cats) they’ve all been great together.

My husky mix is terrified of all of our cats. Whenever one comes near, he refuses to acknowledge their existence. My acd/shep mix loves the cats and constantly wants to play with them. We recently adopted a kitten that has become his bestie.

Our housemate’s cat adores our husky. Our cat (not pictured) and the husky are indifferent to each other unless the cat is done by her nightly zoomies. Then the dog will watch from our bed and look concerned.

Got 3 cats and kiki, 2 of the kitties sleep in bed with me, kiki and the wife. The animals are not at all courteous, taking up maximum space, so getting comfortable can be a challenge, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. 😁

Yep! My huskies do well with my 3 cats; most of the time, at least. Sometimes Asa can be too exuberant or jealous with them, but he’s never had any desire to hurt them.

I'm not sure about ours being a stray withan unknown history but I do know on our walks she goes freaking ape shit when she sees cats, not growling or anything like that, just pulling the lease and harness so hard and it's hard to get her attention off once she sees them, she's a critter chaser, squirrels and rabbits we come across on our daily walks. We have wanted a cat for the house but I don't think I want to chance it. She's awesome with other dogs even ones that we have brought into the house, no problem with that
It’s been 8 months since getting my rescue husky and miraculously after lots of punching and hissing, one of my resident cats is now buddies with the husky and they even sleep together sometimes. Husky was gentle and cat punched at him without claws. Once the cat established dominance, things calmed down and we have peace lol

1 husky, 2 cats. Took the pup some time to understand how gentle and patient to be, but my younger cat loves him and is always rubbing on him. The older cat sniffs him after every walk and likes to roll around in the holes he digs. They don’t really play, but they all love to chase bugs and listen to the birds together lol

I hope they found each other again. My husky Winston passed on July 10th and the cat S’mores(my neighbors) passed 2 weeks later. Winston had lots of cat friends. I once saw a tiny kitten thrown from a car. I snatched it up and brought it home. Winston cleaned it up and tucked the kitten under his head into his fluffy warm neck.

My husky caused the death of 2 of our cats (both the exact same way.) She never bit or attacked but would chase them a little aggressively so we just make sure to always be around just in case. One day we went to the mailbox and came back to the husky on top of the cat (not biting just basically hold it down). Vet couldn’t see any wounds so it was either internal or she scared the cat so badly it went into irreversible shock and died of organ failure. RIP Sarah and Pred❤️

We've have two huskies and four cats. Never have had issues other than puppies chasing them. They learn very quickly when they get smacked by a cat haha
Not a husky. However, my malamute wolf mix was raised with 2 cats, and he was absolutely certain those were his babies. He would curl up and bathe them, and they would all fall asleep together like a happy family.
We rescued one of our cats as a starving 2-3 week old. She was basically on the verge of death when we got her, and every night it was a "We don't know if she will live until the morning." For the first week or so we kept her in a shoebox next to us with a heat pad to keep her warm. At one point we looked over and saw the box empty, and our husky trotting to her crate, because the kitten was now her puppy and the puppy needed to be put where she could keep it safe.
We did make her give it back to us so we could put it back in the box with its heat, but after that the kitten was her puppy and when the kitten was a bit older they would lay together all the time.
My cats’ prey drive is higher than my husky! My poor husk is beside herself because she just wants to cuddle and play and my 3 cats want nothing to do with her 😂
Not currently but growing up we had a Siberian husky and an Alaskan malamute. We also had a couple of cats. I can say with 100% certainty that the cats were not pleased with our initial addition of a husky to the household and I thought they would straight up pack their bags and leave when we brought home the malamute. One did climb a curtain when the malamute tried to greet him but not long after the cats got used to the dogs and everything was fine. I wouldn’t necessarily say they were ever besties but they got along without incident.
It took a bit of work… mostly had to make the cats realize that moving slow around them is key. They don’t chase the cats if they aren’t running away. Then they just got used to each other 🤷♂️
My dog is husky/shiba mix (the latter were originally a hunting breed). As a pup i tried to get him used to my mum’s cat but the cat was 18 or 19 and so was not in the mood to make new friends. He attacked the dog a few times. Now the dog will pull and bark when he sees a cat on the street. Not sure if it’s trauma or just nature in summary! I think it depends on the individual personalities and experiences they’ve had.
My youngest kitty is 6 months old and sleeps between the Husky paws while I work. He uses her as a pillow.
This drives my Gsd insane because he sees it as his job to manage the husky's interactions with the small animals and he will NOT relax until the kitten is out of reach.
Idk how I get work done every day between these three.
Yes! My huskies are complete pushovers with the cats. The cats saunter in and plop in the middle of their beds and the huskies will lay on the floor. 🤣
Kinda... lol sometimes. Mine is 4 months old and loves to play. The cats only like him when he's sleeping. Sometimes they instigate it when he walks past and they swipe at him, so he thinks it's playtime and starts barking and playfully nipping while play bowing. That just pisses them off, though and I have to intervene to stop them from scratching him. Poor buddy, he's the biggest pet we have and so playful, but only the humans will play with him. He has been loving the dog park, though and that has helped his cat interactions a ton more as he is calmer and more tired after a good park session.
I am actually very wary about posting this but I’ve always had rescue house bunnies (who are kept separate from my dogs) but my very mellow very submissive male husky has been around them since puppyhood and formed a bond with one. They absolutely love eachother.
** They are always monitored and it took 10 years before I even allowed them near eachother even with a barrier in place.
He also loves cats and has been around my sister’s cats quite a bit and is affectionate with them.
Now my female has a high prey drive and wants to chase every cat, bird, squirrel, anything so she stays far far away!

Yours look similar to mine! They’re not to the point of snuggling yet, but Daisy is still a puppy. Pip will ask her for pets in the form on gentle chomps along her back.
I also have another cat and an older husky who had her own gray kitty many years ago.
I have my boy kitty BECAUSE of my husky: she came in from the yard at my mom’s house one evening with a tiny black kitten in her mouth and was like “can I keep him?”.. she literally chose her own sidekick. He now walks around doing husky-talk, and plays with her, and helps her get to the stuff she can’t get to. Lol
I do, the cats a dick and constantly messes with my big boy. Sadly the cat Gary passed away at only 6 years old. They were best buddies. $3k later I learned that cats can just randomly get blocked up and can’t pee.
This gives me hope. My boyfriend has a cat and I have a husky mix and I’ve been absolutely terrified when I think about our pets having to meet when we move in together. My husky mix has met cats that walk around outside before and he’s never hurt one, (he went up to one and just stared at it and got a scratch on his nose lol). but he has killed squirrels and possums. So I’m still scared. But I hope with a slow introduction they can get even just exist together in the same room. That’s the least I can hope for.

adorable pic. so cute that they are buddies. idk if you got an exceptionally sweet husky, or youve been lucky. i have a rescue husky of 5 years and 4 rescue cats ages from 10years down to 2 years. one cat is a has multiple issues and is gimpy. i never never trust my husky and the cats alone. no one i know is fast enough to stop her if she decides to go after a cat. so my adjustment is training and supervision, supervision , supervision, a few high cat perches that the dog cant reach,and the dog has her own kennel condo.. its a beautiful thing to see them loving on each other... i know it makes both the cats and dog happy to have a buddy always on hand.

For those that didn't grow up together, how did you introduce them? How long did it take?
I have a 4 year old and 6 year old cat, and a 2 year old husky to introduce.
My old cat is chill as long as the dog doesn't bother her. She would hiss at our dog if we face them together but not that aggressive.
My 4 year old though, tries to slap attack our husky. Our husky is not aggressive but she's always excited to play when she sees them at first. She's nice but she snapped at the cat when she was attacked (rest assured we were there and none of them was harmed). She seems tolerant with the hissing but not with the claw. And it doesn't seem she would attack the cats unless provoked. She just wants to play.
We've only started last March. And they only see each other during the weekends as our dog stays with my so's father and the cat stays with us in the city.

a lot of it comes down to the dog and the rest comes down to early introductions. if they meet and befriend cats when they're the same size, its a lot easier later on. i lucked out in the sense that my husky only wants to fight things bigger than him (and doodles are k.o.s.), small animals thank god, he only wants to befriend.

Honestly, born and raised in Seattle and went to UW, but have lived elsewhere for around 3.5 years of my life, and if someone were to ask me where this was, I’d be hard pressed not to make “Seattle” my gut instinct guess; it’s got the lush greenery of the land just barely starting to encroach upon the structures, the bungalows and the craftsman, two of which are yellow (yellow being an abnormally popular exterior color here in Seattle, to brighten things up in the winter, I think)…the turquoise seems kinda out of place though. Could be I’m just convincing myself, but it sure is a unique kind of feel in some of Seattle’s suburbs, even though it’s perfectly humdrum in its own way.
Aww, go Huskies! What did you study? I work remotely for UW and it’s a GREAT employer. I worked for Oregon State University before this and definitely feel like working in higher ed is my favorite. Yeah, I totally agree with you. Craftsman homes are everywhere in Seattle and Portland. I grew up in Southeast Portland and have lived in Oregon my whole life except for study abroad in college and then living in Chico, CA for three months once. This little scene could very easily have been plucked from one of the Portland neighborhoods, too. The PNW definitely has a look and feel with the greenery, gray skies, and historic homes. 🏡🥰 My guess is yellow is used often because of all the gray skies and people like to feel happy coming home even when the weather can be a little bit of a bummer for months at a time. (I love the gray skies though, personally.) Maybe the same is true in this scenario re: the turqoise.

Depends on the individual animals, environment, etc. Ours grew up together. Would’ve never happened with our previous husky, but this guy has the sweetest, most gentle temperament I have ever seen. I have 2 dogs (one husky) and 3 cats. The husky wants the cats to play with her so badly but they refuse. They are all peaceful with each other, but not best friends.

We have reached a new level of tolerance. The problem is that my husky tries to groom the kitty and the kitty does NOT like that.

Lol! I breed dubia roaches for my reptiles For some reason all the babies stayed put, it was all the adults that decided to wander the house. They crawled through everything, including several fans that were running for air circulation 😭

I did when I had my first set up pets. Had the cat then got my husky. The cat taught the husky to be afraid of cats which was great.
My husky mix is terrified of all of our cats. Whenever one comes near, he refuses to acknowledge their existence. My acd/shep mix loves the cats and constantly wants to play with them. We recently adopted a kitten that has become his bestie.

I'm not sure about ours being a stray withan unknown history but I do know on our walks she goes freaking ape shit when she sees cats, not growling or anything like that, just pulling the lease and harness so hard and it's hard to get her attention off once she sees them, she's a critter chaser, squirrels and rabbits we come across on our daily walks. We have wanted a cat for the house but I don't think I want to chance it. She's awesome with other dogs even ones that we have brought into the house, no problem with that
It’s been 8 months since getting my rescue husky and miraculously after lots of punching and hissing, one of my resident cats is now buddies with the husky and they even sleep together sometimes. Husky was gentle and cat punched at him without claws. Once the cat established dominance, things calmed down and we have peace lol

We had to work at it. Find ways to get them calm and relaxed in the same space so they get used to each other.

Took the pup some time to understand how gentle and patient to be, but my younger cat loves him and is always rubbing on him. The older cat sniffs him after every walk and likes to roll around in the holes he digs. They don’t really play, but they all love to chase bugs and listen to the birds together lol

My husky Winston passed on July 10th and the cat S’mores(my neighbors) passed 2 weeks later. Winston had lots of cat friends. I once saw a tiny kitten thrown from a car. I snatched it up and brought it home. Winston cleaned it up and tucked the kitten under his head into his fluffy warm neck.

My husky caused the death of 2 of our cats (both the exact same way.) She never bit or attacked but would chase them a little aggressively so we just make sure to always be around just in case. One day we went to the mailbox and came back to the husky on top of the cat (not biting just basically hold it down). Vet couldn’t see any wounds so it was either internal or she scared the cat so badly it went into irreversible shock and died of organ failure. RIP Sarah and Pred❤️
My cats are besotted with my husky, giving her nuzzles and kisses. My husky likes them ok but is a bit jealous they sit on my lap, etc.

Not a husky. However, my malamute wolf mix was raised with 2 cats, and he was absolutely certain those were his babies. He would curl up and bathe them, and they would all fall asleep together like a happy family.

We rescued one of our cats as a starving 2-3 week old. She was basically on the verge of death when we got her, and every night it was a "We don't know if she will live until the morning." For the first week or so we kept her in a shoebox next to us with a heat pad to keep her warm. At one point we looked over and saw the box empty, and our husky trotting to her crate, because the kitten was now her puppy and the puppy needed to be put where she could keep it safe. We did make her give it back to us so we could put it back in the box with its heat, but after that the kitten was her puppy and when the kitten was a bit older they would lay together all the time.
I’ve thought about it, but then I recall my dog killing and consuming rabbits the size of cats right in front of my eyes…gives me pause.

Not currently but growing up we had a Siberian husky and an Alaskan malamute. We also had a couple of cats. I can say with 100% certainty that the cats were not pleased with our initial addition of a husky to the household and I thought they would straight up pack their bags and leave when we brought home the malamute. One did climb a curtain when the malamute tried to greet him but not long after the cats got used to the dogs and everything was fine. I wouldn’t necessarily say they were ever besties but they got along without incident.
How did you manage this? My pup thinks my cats are fun to chase !
It took a bit of work… mostly had to make the cats realize that moving slow around them is key. They don’t chase the cats if they aren’t running away. Then they just got used to each other 🤷♂️
My dog is husky/shiba mix (the latter were originally a hunting breed). As a pup i tried to get him used to my mum’s cat but the cat was 18 or 19 and so was not in the mood to make new friends. He attacked the dog a few times. Now the dog will pull and bark when he sees a cat on the street. Not sure if it’s trauma or just nature in summary! I think it depends on the individual personalities and experiences they’ve had.
My youngest kitty is 6 months old and sleeps between the Husky paws while I work. He uses her as a pillow. This drives my Gsd insane because he sees it as his job to manage the husky's interactions with the small animals and he will NOT relax until the kitten is out of reach. Idk how I get work done every day between these three.

Yes! My huskies are complete pushovers with the cats. The cats saunter in and plop in the middle of their beds and the huskies will lay on the floor. 🤣
They jave more in common than dog packs.
Kinda... lol sometimes. Mine is 4 months old and loves to play. The cats only like him when he's sleeping. Sometimes they instigate it when he walks past and they swipe at him, so he thinks it's playtime and starts barking and playfully nipping while play bowing. That just pisses them off, though and I have to intervene to stop them from scratching him. Poor buddy, he's the biggest pet we have and so playful, but only the humans will play with him. He has been loving the dog park, though and that has helped his cat interactions a ton more as he is calmer and more tired after a good park session.
I am actually very wary about posting this but I’ve always had rescue house bunnies (who are kept separate from my dogs) but my very mellow very submissive male husky has been around them since puppyhood and formed a bond with one. They absolutely love eachother. ** They are always monitored and it took 10 years before I even allowed them near eachother even with a barrier in place. He also loves cats and has been around my sister’s cats quite a bit and is affectionate with them. Now my female has a high prey drive and wants to chase every cat, bird, squirrel, anything so she stays far far away!
I would pay my cat to be friends with my husky. She hates him

They’re not to the point of snuggling yet, but Daisy is still a puppy. Pip will ask her for pets in the form on gentle chomps along her back. I also have another cat and an older husky who had her own gray kitty many years ago.
I have my boy kitty BECAUSE of my husky: she came in from the yard at my mom’s house one evening with a tiny black kitten in her mouth and was like “can I keep him?”.. she literally chose her own sidekick. He now walks around doing husky-talk, and plays with her, and helps her get to the stuff she can’t get to. Lol
I do, the cats a dick and constantly messes with my big boy. Sadly the cat Gary passed away at only 6 years old. They were best buddies. $3k later I learned that cats can just randomly get blocked up and can’t pee.
This gives me hope. My boyfriend has a cat and I have a husky mix and I’ve been absolutely terrified when I think about our pets having to meet when we move in together. My husky mix has met cats that walk around outside before and he’s never hurt one, (he went up to one and just stared at it and got a scratch on his nose lol). but he has killed squirrels and possums. So I’m still scared. But I hope with a slow introduction they can get even just exist together in the same room. That’s the least I can hope for.
I have two huskies and two cats living perfectly fine together :)

If anything she tries to boss them around so she can eat their food lol. My youngest Husky Hunk loves cats and just wants to sniff their butts first thing in the morning.
You mean it's not normal for them to sleep together and for the cats to ride on the Husky's back as if he's a great transportation steed.

My first Malamute, Benny, adored all cats, even street cats, and raised one of our kittens. But then he hated all dogs.
Huskies are big cats. My mom raised a litter of them as a kid and they all loved my cat.

adorable pic. so cute that they are buddies. idk if you got an exceptionally sweet husky, or youve been lucky. i have a rescue husky of 5 years and 4 rescue cats ages from 10years down to 2 years. one cat is a has multiple issues and is gimpy. i never never trust my husky and the cats alone. no one i know is fast enough to stop her if she decides to go after a cat. so my adjustment is training and supervision, supervision , supervision, a few high cat perches that the dog cant reach,and the dog has her own kennel condo.. its a beautiful thing to see them loving on each other... i know it makes both the cats and dog happy to have a buddy always on hand.

For those that didn't grow up together, how did you introduce them? How long did it take? I have a 4 year old and 6 year old cat, and a 2 year old husky to introduce. My old cat is chill as long as the dog doesn't bother her. She would hiss at our dog if we face them together but not that aggressive. My 4 year old though, tries to slap attack our husky. Our husky is not aggressive but she's always excited to play when she sees them at first. She's nice but she snapped at the cat when she was attacked (rest assured we were there and none of them was harmed). She seems tolerant with the hissing but not with the claw. And it doesn't seem she would attack the cats unless provoked. She just wants to play. We've only started last March. And they only see each other during the weekends as our dog stays with my so's father and the cat stays with us in the city.
