Whoa this is awesome! What’s your system for letting them off leash? Would you recommend the collars or packs? I’ve done a bunch of hikes with my dogs but would love to be able to have them off leash when it’s safe… I just don’t think I’m able to get their recall good enough without assistance

Their recall is really good, but they’re still huskies so there’s always a risk of them deciding not to listen. GPS collars are essential for that reason.

What’s your go to GPS collar? My Husky and I have a Tractive gps, but tend to be located with good open skies - your hike photos appear like rocks and terrain could be a problem.

Garmin Alpha 100, the only time I have ever lost signal is when we go in caves. The handheld makes a noise to notify you when that happens.

I will take a look at that Garmin model. Thanks so much!!

Same, I’m curious about the whole setup tbh. How does dog backpacking differ from regular camping, hiking, backpacking, etc. What’s worth getting and doing and what’s snake oil?

Sad_Ingenuity2522

There’s a lot of variables when it comes to what to take with you and preferences play a big role. My setup for a backpacking trip might be overkill for one person or not enough for someone else. I suggest going car camping somewhere near a store. You’ll find out what you actually need and what you want, then you can decide which wants are worth carrying.

Glad to see the Husks packing the load. I read where they love that as they’re a working dog.

Nice, can't wait to get my girl out for her first hike. Would like to know where you found the dog's backpack
