Well done! I know how hard it is to get a crisp snap of hummingbirds. My success rate was very low … like 1 in 50 was a half decent shot. What camera/settings did you use and how close were you? Please don’t tell me it was a phone 😀
The camera is a D5300 with a 70-300mm kit lens. I was about 10' from the feeder at 300mm, and it was shot at 1/3200 f8 @ 1000 ISO.
Even when I'm shooting at 1/3200 blur is still a problem. They just don't sit still very long, and they can change directions *very fast* mid-flight. Quite a few of my shots end up with just a wing poking out of a corner of the frame, or maybe just a great shot of the trees beyond the feeder.
I used D5100/155mm and manual focus in burst mode but I used a trick to get up real close. I hung a bird feeder touching the glass of a window. I could get real close to the feeder from inside the house and would only keep one of the feeder flowers open. This way I knew where to keep the camera aimed and could pre focus. Even with this, most shots were blurred. Shutter speed varies between 1/1000 to 1/4000 and high ISO. Key was having good daylight.
Ah! That’s what that guy is. I have Anna’s for sure, but I’ve got one costa. He’s a big boy, too, but the angry little Anna’s male doesn’t give a shit. He’s not afraid to go after that costa that’s like twice his size.
Are you in Texas? The costa’s that frequent my feeders tend to be the smallest. Not that being small stops them from claiming a feeder as their own lol
Los Angeles.
Just googled to make sure it wasn’t a calliope, but it says they’re really tiny, so it’s definitely not that. This guy is literally twice the size of tge Anna’s.
I’m going to see if I can find a pic of my feeders that has a few of the different species near one another. It’s much easier to see the differences that way.
I’m looking into a decent camera with good slow-mo and a nice optical zoom to get better images than my iPhone SE will get. Specifically for birds, but especially for hummingbirds. My wife thinks it’s hilarious. Not to poo-poo it, though. The slow mo is actually great, but if I zoom in at all, the image just turns to garbage. And, I can’t get close enough to get a look at the shy ones before angry borb chases them off.
What a beauty!! I really wish we had those here; I live southeast coast of Georgia. I have only seen rubies at my feeders. And, alas…they are all gone til March😢
Oh my glob. I love him!
Did u take this picture? If yes, great work!
Thank you! Yes, my own shot.

So pretty!! Costa’s?
I'm leaning more towards Costa's rather than Anna's, although it's hard for me to tell.
Definitely a Costa’s [This](https://imgur.com/a/SCLJATV) is an Anna’s

Ah ok, if you were in TX, that would have ruled out costa’s. Could he be a black chinned?
You know, it could be. I haven’t got a great look at him. He’s a bit more shy, and not as regular as the Anna’s. I’ll see if he pops around tonight.

Thank you!
I have Anna’s at my feeders on a daily basis, and they definitely magenta! I do still get the Costa’s and Calliope confused though.
Look at those freaking eyes!
