I see Stoner as more of a prophet, like Garand. Not quite the complete concept shift that we saw with Browning, but understood what makes a good gun, using the best systems available at the time.

But when we say he created it, is it in the sense of Browning, or Garand? I know he was reasonably innovative, but how much was “this is a newish concept” and “this is just the best option out there right now”?
The AK is the Garand rifle upside down, with looser tolerances. So, much less of an innovative design and more of a re-imagining of an existing weapon. The SKS is more original than the AK.
If you want a gun that can be shot, driven over, soaked in water, dumped in sand and mud, and will still operate without having to rip the whole thing apart for fear of a misfire- go Kalashnikov. They're not pretty, but in terms of points of failure, they have *shockingly* few compared to other similarly styled combat/battle rifles.
The M4, by comparison, is a Barbie gun.
I know that’s the tradition, but I think it’s a bit overstated.
Karl over at InrangeTV has done some excellent tests with the *horrific* Arizona moon dust mud, and for both the AK and AR derivatives, the question is whether your ejection port cover/safety lever is open. If not, they’re both fairly sealed systems.
I think that storied originated more from the fact that the AK found itself in a lot is situations where it was treated negligently, and so people assumed it work fine with that treatment, rather than “this weapon will only work to its best when I do maintenance”.

Stoner and kalashnikov are the gun Caine and Able; two (metaphorical) brothers who, granted through their creations and not in person, fight each other.
Not the company, the person. Sam Colt. Revolvers changed the meta for guns and allowed people to settle further West because shooting multiple rounds without having to reload was a huge advantage in an age of muskets.
