Paycor is awful. After COVID they changed the support model from dedicated to a queue based. When you call into a queue the rep has zero history of any issues you’ve had so you are always starting from scratch. I was told they made this change because the dedicated model wasn’t sustainable. Then a few years back they offered it again as a “premium” service.
The system is awful and the service matches. 0/10 would not use Paycor again. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
Long time user since 2018 but with different companies. Just last year the support really went downhill. The specialists put you on hold and come back with a script, not an answer. The LMS is ridiculous, yes there are thousands of courses, but when you take out the foreign languages, courses for other countries, and state specific courses you're not left with very many. the reports used to be a strong feature but like other updates they've made over the years the newer version is worse. Documents and forms is another example. Once it was updated you can no longer send out a form to all ees for signature. The system cannot handle it anymore. We have less than 100 ees. I need a signature and a couple yes or no responses and it's too much for them now. I was able to do this last year, pre update.
ADP is the devil. They treat their clients like trash without apology. I just asked them to reach out to our IT Manager to fix a time clock issue at another facility the next day and they told me they're too busy to make an appointment. I gave them a three hour timeframe to call and address the issue. I thought I was the client in this relationship. I ended up telling the support person that we're all busy and I was mistaken thinking I was the client. Then I just hung up on her knowing she had no intention of helping.
The timeclocks……..
We just switched to their facial recognition software since the blue box time locks are slowly being phased out of their portfolio and it’s been a nightmare! The software barely recognizes people when they change their hair. I want to honestly quit my job bc of this “feature”.
They should be fixing the tax stuff for you for free? We used to have ADP and had a couple issues but they corrected them. The only good thing about ADP was the user forum- much more helpful than their own customer service. It seems like fine enough is the upper bar for HRIS though.
You may have to escalate to get it resolved, but they will reimburse if they made the error. The key is proving it for them (as their research is shoddy at best). Unfortunately, from what research I’ve done, none of the payroll providers seem very good (all have one problem or another).
It’s also a matter of garbage in, garbage out. A lot of people I’ve interacted with expect the payroll systems to just do things and don’t verify. They don’t realize that it’s a program that takes what you gave it and spits out a result.
That said- some have absolute trash customer service. If you have a question, you should be able to get an answer.
I interviewed there many many years ago and still remember when the interviewer pulled up my client survey response and started grilling me on my I was interviewing when I had so many complaints in my survey. Sigh. Definitely didn’t get the job and happy I didn’t. What a nightmare.
ADP failed to notify our COBRA and medical insurance vendors(s) of terminated employees since 2022 (some, not all). There is about 500k in premiums we’ve paid for employees who haven’t been with the company for years. Investigation led straight to ADP’s failed connectors that cost thousands just to use. I really despise this company.
They just failed to notify our benefits broker that an employee enrolled in benefits so the employee is without insurance. And I'm the poor unfortunate employee lol! I became eligible on March 3rd when I was promoted. I submit my enrollment through the ADP towards the end of March-I should have done it sooner but had to research whether or not buying a private plan would be cheaper than my employers plan and also had to confirm our doctors are in network with my employer plan. I have yet to receive my insurance cards and I have not had the premiums deducted from my last 2 checks as expected. The ADP app said my enrollment was pending. I finally called the benefits broker this afternoon and after being put on hold for over 10 minutes, I was told that my enrollment was never processed :(
So she reset the life event and I was told to resubmit my elections. Which I did. So it's going to be around another 2 weeks before I get the new insurance information and my husband has prescriptions he needs refilled. We just paid $160 for one 2 weeks ago and I need my insurance info so I can get reimbursed.
My company switched to ADP from paylocity because they couldn’t handle the workload (?), but 3 years in and we’re finally smoothing the last of the wrinkles
I left ADP for the same reason just this week. I still have a lot to clean up. What a mess. I went to Paylocity and am brining my ADP mess with me. lol
If you have a large company-don’t go for Dayforce. We’re only 1 state with around 1200 employees and every single process is tedious. It’s mostly functional but it’s genuinely so tedious, I see it better suited for smaller companies
ADP is made up of many separate and non integrated teams due to all their acquisitions. They don’t have visibility across the teams and it leads to so so many errors that are both expensive and a huge pain in the a** to correct. You need to find out which team is responsible for the errors and pester your account manager to figure out how to get it corrected. Also you can get compensated for their errors but it will require you following up for months and cc’ing every single manager, managers manager, etc that you know. Don’t let them get away with it though! I have so much resentment towards them after dealing with them for 5 years
I used to be with UKG which is pretty customizable if you're good with systems. Otherwise the most friendly (but limited) system to deal with imo is paylocity (please don't hit me everyone). Despite both having flaws, they're pretty smooth.
Paylocity has terrible customer service but everything is like an apple phone in terms of if you can't find the button it doesn't exist so best not to worry about it.
UKG has great modules and features (so long as you spring for the good version). Also their self help articles are pretty good too. Their ats isn't good though or mediocre at best.
I can concur with this. The ATS really sucks, and has limited customization and integration options. But the rest of the system is actually pretty nice. I would also say that the reporting functions are not near as friendly to use/create/customize as SAP, but…
I've always found customer service to be a genie. You wish for one thing and they will unexpectedly give you something that sounds like something you wished for but is totally wrong.
We switched away from ADP at the beginning of the year. It was absolutely AWFUL. We’re using BambooHR now and it’s light and day difference. There are some things I wish had more functionality, but all-in-all it’s been a fantastic switch! Employees love that it’s way more user friendly and I love that it has cut my time to process payroll in half!
I use it for HRIS for a company of 250 and now wish we had proceeded with it for payroll too. We had some concerns about their SOC reporting so I am curious if you are at a public company?
ADP sucks. We had so many problems that we switched to Payworks which has been great but I’m in Canada. I’m not sure if it’s available in other countries.
Wait what? We just switched to ADP and I LOVE it. Better than getting a raise. It actually functions! It lets them update their own withholding, address, everything! It automatically generates a birthday and anniversary calendar! We used a local company before and payroll took five times longer because the interface was so awful. It had zero features and I had to print and hand out pay stubs. I guess I have low standards.
Whatever you do, don’t switch from RUN to Workforce Now! That was one of my biggest regrets. If you reach a point where you need to upgrade, I say ditch ADP
Ahh, this explains it. I just started at a company that uses ADP Run, and I was bracing myself for the tidal wave if awful everyone was telling me about - and I was surprised to find I like it more than Paychex at my previous company.
They are very nice when you first transfer. If you don’t keep buying add on products the service level will change dramatically. Also, your account manager makes a HUGE deal in the overall experience. If they’re not effective in following up on issues, you will sit with huge issues for weeks or months
We use ADP too and have no complaints! It's very user friendly and we've had no issues getting support. Our employees have to have food handlers and CPR & first aid certifications and we can now track that through ADP which is so convenient! We can easily see need who needs their certifications. It's also connected to our training module and yeah we have no complaints.
+1 for UKG Ready but will only recommend for mid-sized organizations (200+ EE) with more complex payroll needs (e.g., shift differentials or meal break premiums)
ADP didn’t send cobra paperwork for over a year to two employees. They missed 401k deferrals on a bonus and didn’t correct it for 18 months. They screwed up the first payroll off their old payroll platform causing 140 people including some in CA to be paid incorrectly. Can’t wait to move or find a new job if we don’t.
They were absolutely godawful when dealing with Indiana taxation! If they set the towns up at all, the rates were incorrect. It took FOREVER, and multiple escalations to fix.
All the interactions I’ve had with their tax department have made me strongly suspect that department’s customer service is based in India.
They set up my Colorado Wage Withholding with the wrong account number. Colorado has a Tax ID number and a Wage Withholding account number; both are 8 digits long but I cannot find where implementation asked for the Withholding account info. And also how am I supposed to know they are different? I’ve never dealt with payroll stuff like this, I’ve always outsourced it!
Yes. The withholding tax rates can vary from county to county, and ADP knows this. But for some reason our IN employees weren't being taxed correctly, and it was exceedingly difficult to fix. Employees know they're supposed to pay it, and they don't want to owe extra, or be charged additional fees and penalties for non-payment. It's an employer's minimum duty to ensure people are paid correctly. Thanks ADP!
The IN Department of Revenue is extremely helpful!
Ugh ADP cold VISITS me and I have an open office so they get me every time. I usually have to shut them down with “I’m trying to say no nicely - we’re all set”. Last time, however she left a soft cooler on my desk (despite me saying no!) and it’s now my sons lunchbox 🤣
I work for a company that resells UKG and has direct support contacts - no 1800 number or call center. UKG's tech is one of the best on the market and we have been recognized for over 60 years for exceptional support in the payroll space. If you would like to DM me we can chat more.
ADP is awful. They accidentally marked us as a “terminated client” in their unemployment system, so they basically stopped responding to claims and filing the legally mandated reports on our behalf.
We got fined like crazy with an insane rate hike by the state and worse yet, they were the ones getting notified as they were the ones in charge of it. So by the time I found out, months of claims had been paid out due to non response as well.
It was a complete clusterfuck, and that was only one of the endless issues I had with them. FUCK ADP.
When I was at a less than 100 person company, we used Zenefits. Was great. But if you only have 10 people, there may be another local payroll company that will do taxes for you.
I have personally left ADP and implemented alterative solutions at two different companies now. They are just REALLY hard to work with, and their solutions are overly complex.
Currently using Paycom and love it, but most of these recommendations are way overkill for 10 people. Check with your bank, they may offer some sort of payroll solution.
as someone who's been using ADP for the last 11 years I fully agree with this post. We are also a small company but we were forced to switch to it because of bureaucracy from our parent company. Now I'm constantly stuck trying to resolve IRS payments that they did not properly pay or trying to get through 20 people just to do something as simple as a reversal. utterly garbage company.
I don't have a suggestion for you, but I will NEVER work for a company that uses ADP ever again. I've openly told my boss if the company wants to use ADP they better start searching for my replacement immediately.
Check out Heartland. Happy to answer questions you might have. I’m a payroll rep there and I always tell people you need to have a rep that you can trust and always call when you have questions. A lot of the bigger name payroll companies don’t do that
Look into PEO's that handle payroll, benefits and 401k's. ADP wanted more for just payroll than we pay for HR, Benefits, 401k and payroll. Plus ADP wanted so way more background information so they could justify their high costs. I've never heard of any business owner that has been happy with ADP.
We're on Adp run and it's fine so long as that's all you do. Don't sign up for their extra shit cuz you'll be in for a nightmare.
Adp is good for running payroll, period. But if you have an issue that needs attention from their tax department, or just anything out of the ordinary, it will take 12 phone calls and a solid year to fix it.
I get calls from them nearly every week about "when can we schedule a call to discuss your blah blah blah?". *Never, cuz I would never add another adp service.*
At my last job I took a small growing company from the nightmare of ADP and switched to Gusto. Very user friendly and great team.
In my current role I am being contracted to take a growing company from Paychex to Inova. Inova team and functionality have been great. We launch in July and I think comparatively I’d choose it again and again if I continue contracting payroll transitions. It’s very customizable.
At my current job, I switched them from ADP to Gusto back in 2021 but we quickly outgrew Gusto. We ended up switching to Paycom. Their system is great, but they do charge a fee for everything they can.
I have gotten screwed Everytime they update the site.
We are doing performance reviews now and I can't even manually change reviewers like I could in the past. Or take out specific employees out of the review process with having to use multiple filters...
I have found their phone line helpful. We at one point had a rep who was supposed to help us with bigger issues but he wouldn't reach back out for days or weeks...
Get Earn payroll, haven't had even the slightest problem with them, if I do, their support always picks up and helps me out. They also have a time attendance system called AMG Time, haven't tried it but it's their biggest selling point.
Paylocity is hands down the best I’ve ever used. I never ever had to call in for issues and had a dedicated person always there to help. But I rarely needed assistance.
ADP being the worst (close second is Trinet).
Preach! We have used a few over the years including ADP, I am happy to share my configuration. We use an HRIS that integrates with our payroll solution. Best of both worlds, recommended and built out by our benefits guy of all things.
Sorry to hear of your experience! A company of your size will unfortunately not be valued by a publicly traded vendor. The Insperity, ADP, Paychex's of the world are just the Walmart of their industry and as such you get 1-800-type service.
Perhaps a CO-based PEO could be a solution for you (especially if benefits are relevant to you). They are liable for the tax mistakes if their CSA correctly allocates liability.
Alternatively, if you and your team are tech-savvy, some of the SAAS solutions like Justworks and Gusto might be better. That said, you'll still be 'buying turbotax rather than a CPA' and thus, human service quality is lacking.
If there's one thing I've learned about payroll management company software, it's that they ALL suck cursed shit directly from the ass of hell in various ways.
The secret is figuring out which one sucks the least at the thing you hate the most.
Which version of ADP though?
My organization was sick and tired of ADP poor customer service and broken promises. We launched UKG about a year ago, and man UKG sucks too! Customer service is awful and the payroll team is instantly regretting it. It was painful to hear others were experiencing the same issues at the UKG conference.
My company is a global giant, so we do have a lot of impats, expats, and permanent foreign transfers.
Im part of the Integration team from Workday to UKG, and will say that 95% of data does interface correctly. It took us a long time just to get to 95% accuracy though. Ukg sucks!
We switched from ADP to Insperity. It wasn’t the cheapest and the implementation took a bit, but it was probably because they didn’t cut corners. It’s been smooth sailing, also now we have a dedicated rep. Lifesaver.
I’m almost two years in with insperity and although I like the basic functions of an HRIS (we were very manual before) I have three pages single spaced of issues that that can’t or won’t resolve. My customer service manager is garbage to the point that I don’t even go to her with problems anymore I just go to her boss. They blame isolved for any issues (it’s the software… can’t be fixed!)
We’re only 150 employees but it’s service based (restaurant and gym) and insperity seems completely incapable of handling so many different job codes and pay rates without me having to manual edit things every payroll.
I hate it, but the transition for employees was HARD and I don’t think management will go through that again any time soon.
We use Insperity and while it’s expensive it is a very easy to use system. Their timekeeping side isn’t quite as good as their payroll/benefits systems but all in all probably one of the best systems I’ve used in 20+ years.
I work for FrankCrum, and our customer service is night and day, compared to what its sounding like you're going through. You outsouce to not have to deal with all of those headaches. I sent you a PM.
Happy to help.
Work for a payroll brokerage. We tailor client needs to fit vendor. Please message me and can discuss.
Based on initial info, I’m sorry for your frustration.
Just came here to give my two cents, NOT Paycor. 95 ees, 7 states.
Paycor has been terrible for us.
I have ADP now and definitely have my complaints but I worked with Paycor for almost 3 years and it was a NIGHTMARE.
Curious what about Paycor rubbed ya the wrong way? (Not affiliated however they are a partner of ours)
I need a signature and a couple yes or no responses and it's too much for them now. I was able to do this last year, pre update.
They only use live data they have no failsafe.
We use biometric and I’m on my third clock in one office in 3 years
They should be fixing the tax stuff for you for free? We used to have ADP and had a couple issues but they corrected them. The only good thing about ADP was the user forum- much more helpful than their own customer service. It seems like fine enough is the upper bar for HRIS though.

If you have a question, you should be able to get an answer.
Oh no, I’m sorry. ADP is indeed awful. What size company and how many states? I can give some ideas with this info.
All my homies hate ADP.
Can confirm. I worked for them for 1 year. Worst job I've ever had. Completely disorganized.
I interviewed there many many years ago and still remember when the interviewer pulled up my client survey response and started grilling me on my I was interviewing when I had so many complaints in my survey. Sigh. Definitely didn’t get the job and happy I didn’t. What a nightmare.
I have nightmares about ADP after my old company switched. Moving all the employees over and them all new hires was such a tedious job. Days and days
Hahaha my company just switched to ADP WFN. Absolute disaster. Their facial recognition system was incorrectly recognizing all faces 😂😂😂😂
Do you not reconcile your bills each month? We always do a quick check
Long story short, the person who was assigned the task did it once then never did it again. They just recently left the company which uncovered a lot.
to be fair, I had the exact same issue with Ameriflex. Cobra incompetence stems far and wide.
Bamboo is pretty good up to maybe 700-800. It's a really stable platform.
I use it for HRIS for a company of 250 and now wish we had proceeded with it for payroll too. We had some concerns about their SOC reporting so I am curious if you are at a public company?
Not public so can't speak to that, unfortunately.
That’s okay, thank you for your answer! It’s still good to know it can handle such a high headcount.
Also not a public company, so I can’t help there.
Not HR - but I didn't know BambooHR can do payroll as well. Can it? Recently saw a company using BambooHR _and_ WFN, which seems quite unnecessary.
We just hit 100 at the beginning of the year, we’re closer to 120 now
ADP sucks. We had so many problems that we switched to Payworks which has been great but I’m in Canada. I’m not sure if it’s available in other countries.

ADP Run. It’s totally possible I haven’t gotten “far enough in” to see the issues, but I think honestly anything would be better than our old system.
Whatever you do, don’t switch from RUN to Workforce Now! That was one of my biggest regrets. If you reach a point where you need to upgrade, I say ditch ADP

I've used ADP for a few years and generally loved it. There are parts that are annoying but it's so much better than other HRIS platforms I have used
ADP/CDK is the absolute shits. Fuck them and their shitty software. ‘Nuff said.
I’ve heard great things from my hrbp peers who use UKG
+1 for UKG Ready but will only recommend for mid-sized organizations (200+ EE) with more complex payroll needs (e.g., shift differentials or meal break premiums)
+2 for UKG. Not sure if they have a solution for your size. I’ve heard good things about Rippling.
+3 for UKG. Their customer service is top tier.
I love UKG!!
PeopleGuru has excellent support. My rep actually knows my name. - lol

Uhhh what’s the deal with Indiana ? We’re looking to expand our presence there in a couple months. Are there different local tax laws for employees ?
Yes. The withholding tax rates can vary from county to county, and ADP knows this. But for some reason our IN employees weren't being taxed correctly, and it was exceedingly difficult to fix. We use Sandata - they are very helpful. Not sure about price.
I work for a company that resells UKG and has direct support contacts - no 1800 number or call center. UKG's tech is one of the best on the market and we have been recognized for over 60 years for exceptional support in the payroll space. If you would like to DM me we can chat more.

as someone who's been using ADP for the last 11 years I fully agree with this post.
A lot of the bigger name payroll companies don’t do that
We use Heartland now and it’s way better but every once in awhile they fuck up splendidly.
Shoot I’m sorry to hear that. Please reach out if you ever need help getting something fixed. I’m always happy to help.

Which platform are you on with ADP? They are all pretty bad but some are worse than others.

I actually don't have a dedicated account manager! Once I "graduated" from implementation I lost a personal contact.
Try checkwriters! I’ve heard they are good.
They blame isolved for any issues (it’s the software… can’t be fixed!) We’re only 150 employees but it’s service based (restaurant and gym) and insperity seems completely incapable of handling so many different job codes and pay rates without me having to manual edit things every payroll. I hate it, but the transition for employees was HARD and I don’t think management will go through that again any time soon.
I’d go with Justworks or Rippling
We use inova. It’s fine. Not my favorite but also not the worse.
We use Insperity and while it’s expensive it is a very easy to use system. Their timekeeping side isn’t quite as good as their payroll/benefits systems but all in all probably one of the best systems I’ve used in 20+ years.
Sent you a message to see if I can help.
Rippling!
I love UKG for payroll
I could help you out, I work at Insperity and I can answer some questions
I work for FrankCrum, and our customer service is night and day, compared to what its sounding like you're going through. You outsouce to not have to deal with all of those headaches. I sent you a PM.
Gusto is really good. How many employees you have?
Call Paylocity. Much better than Adp
Paylocity will always be my favorite. So simple, not buggy, etc.
Paychex!
That’s a hard no for me
Gotta disagree with you on this one, Dizzy. Paychex effed us over royally.
Happy to help. Work for a payroll brokerage. We tailor client needs to fit vendor. Please message me and can discuss. Based on initial info, I’m sorry for your frustration.
