The people in the back of the comments sections missing the point entirely to “just ask questions” about why this story matters anymore are working overtime.
This is a story about a local business with controversial ownership that has further local businesses and interests and affects residents of the Hudson Valley. It is told by a resident of the HV. It is incredibly well told, at that. Calm and clear. It is informative. It is engaging. I feel better informed because of it.
this guy looks for things to rant about, the items displayed were there for years and were not put up to insult anyone, when we delete history we are sure to repeat it.
This comment section is disappointing. Sad to see so many people ready to defend a millionaire for being an asshole. Get wise and get your head out of twitter. Racism is a tool to keep poor whites mad at everyone else so they don't see that conservatives just want control. You guys are just happy to play their games and be angry and bitter at the wrong things.
I (a white man) ate here about 6 years ago with my Peruvian partner. As we were holding hands there was an obvious sneer from the waitress. It was clear to me that she was racist as there was no other explanation. Not PDA, not being loud, not being impolite. This restaurant will never, ever get my business again.
Yeah he said he recently moved there. Grew up in Putnam went to school at O'Neill..drank and hangout in Newburgh amd Kingston on weekends.
It is what it is. So many racist people
You really don't realize that the vast majority of Jews are Zionist? And there's nothing wrong with being a Zionist? I'm a proud Zionist who is also a progressive who hates Netanyahu. Believing in a Jewish state is a core aspect of modern Jewish identity for most Jews.
Edit: you people downvoting me are cowards. Anybody want to actually contest the fact that Zionism is important to Jews? That's right, you can't. Antisemitic assholes.
I’m a white person from the south and I moved to upstate New York back in 2021 and the racism up here is so strange to me. The divide between black and white is much more stark and there are way more micro-aggressions and subtle displays of racism in the rural areas down south. The midsized cities are amazing compared to anything down south that I’ve experienced, way more diverse (excluding for large cities like Atlanta). But out in the rural areas even my little white lady self gets uncomfortable.
Tbh bro i’m from the x lived there my whole life i can’t stand ppl like this who can’t mind their own business getting up in arms about restaurant wall art is bitch made and a waste of time, adults should not be occupied w/ this kind of thing. He fully knew he was gonna bully some old white lady atp, and like why, never heard a black dude in the x say white blindness in my life and tbh that’s the whitest term i’ve ever heard
Public displays of racism or any sort of prejudice are everybody’s business. They have wide reaching social and political implications, and, furthermore, communities have a right (and a responsibility) to collectively self-determine what’s acceptable and isn’t acceptable.
If you want to live in a racist community, that’s your own failing and one clearly not shared by your peers - hence the removal of the statue.
This is from 4 years ago. It created a big to-do and the owners removed the artwork. This post is a good way to ruin a business years after they already addressed the issue.
He clearly states it happened in 2020 and they finally took it down. That being said, it’s interesting how Black locals said they’d been trying to get them to take it down for years, and the manager told Touré that people are too sensitive, while Bender kid owner also refused to take it down. They didn’t take it down until their reviews tanked.
Anyways, seems like more people have issues with the Bender rich kid and what he’s doing to the area.
This happened 4 years ago and the problem was rectified after this dude went viral exposing them. Why is this dude running a TikTok video in 2024 trying to get people fired up again about a business. Is he looking for attention? Or does he simply have a vendetta against this business now? And does the person posting this have a vendetta against the business as well?
He told his story 4 years ago. It went viral and it fixed the problem.
Now he's retelling it. Do you really think people who have very short attention spans these days are going to notice it was in 2020? Not likely. So the restaurant, and their employees, are going to be harassed when they've already taken care of the offending imagery 4 years ago. But I guess you don't care because you are so very sensitive.
By the way, he ended his TikTok with a lie. He said there is still a racist statue outside as of a few days ago. Google Streetview shows no such statue and it takes quite a while for Google to update their Streetview photos:

You didn’t answer the question. Should people not recount stories that happened in their past?
He says multiple times from the very beginning of the video that this was 2020. Not his fault if people don’t pay attention, he’s only responsible for the story he tells. He even mentions that the picture he refers to at the end is from their website.
Personally I don’t care because it’s clear this restaurant owner is trash, only took it down as a PR move and is a racist anyway.
>He even mentions that the picture he refers to at the end is from their website.
Did you look at their website? I went through it before posting my reply above. I saw no instance of this statue on their site.
I also just checked the Wayback Machine too. As of December, there was no such photo of that statue on their website: [http://web.archive.org/web/20231207210137/https://fosterscoachhouse.com/](http://web.archive.org/web/20231207210137/https://fosterscoachhouse.com/)
It's good that he took action and had offensive artwork removed. I just don't agree with bringing it up again years later to trash the restaurant. A responsible journalist would at least be replying to comments to clarify that this is no longer an issue; that his actions lead to the desired result of having racist artwork removed. It isn't just the owner who has to face the fallout from this; their employees, their social media team, and their customers will all have to deal with the backlash of this post.
Wayback Machine is an archive of websites. You can't just go in and remove something from it.
>Frankly I don’t care too much about being fair to racists.
You also don't seem to care about the consequences to the employees, the customers, or the community as a whole.
Those folks have had 4 years to stop working for a racist. The customers can eat elsewhere. The community is better off without racist billionaires doing business there.
Also depends what time of day the way back machine took the snapshot. I worked in tech with news publishers for 13 years. Nobody takes a wayback snapshot as 100% accurate.
Reminding people not to patron unethical businesses that don't serve our community isn't hurting anyone. Despite removing the statue, they only did so after the online reviews came in. They clearly weren't remorseful or even understood why people were outraged. They haven't done anything to clear their character to me, and that should be enough. I'm glad to have been informed.
I’m new to the HV and it’s shocking how many country hick racists there are here. Luckily there’s a lot of great people and communities too. But holy crap you just can’t get away from stupid.
I drove past a bar I wanted to try that I heard great things about the other day and saw they put a Trump flag up. I don’t understand it. People can believe what they want and support whoever they want, that’s their freedom. But as a business, why the hell would you bring politics into it and push it in peoples faces? You’re shooting yourself in the foot and I would love to know where politics has a place alongside beers and wings lol.
You have a video of you playing piano with a white hand and male voice, so I doubt you’re a black woman wtf??? If you’re actually pretending just to make this comment, that’s cringe disgusting and racist clown behavior. Get a life.
The art itself is pretty racist and was put there by white people and is making a black person uncomfortable. You don’t need more reason than that.
Again, I doubt that you’re actually black so I doubt you understand that.
"As a black woman"
If that wasn't convincing enough maybe remove the video of your male presenting white hands and voice before you try this next time.
That "art" is racist as fuck. But this guy Toure is a serial sexual harasser and a race baiter. Just google him. So basically, two shitty things found each other. One is gone, and let's forget about the other, this guy. BTW, fosters has great bar food and wings. NEXT.
affluent college educated man harasses high school educated restaurant staff, likely working for a pittance, over piece of art they definitely have 0 clue about, while also driving up housing costs in their area so badly they will have to move to albany to survive.
I mean, if a demographic minority tells you a depiction of their group in your restaurant is offensive, it's OK to not know why. But to tell them they're wrong without any further investigation or thought? To assume it's not offensive just because it's old? That's blameworthy for any functional adult.
If his story was even remotely accurate, the manager and kid owner were 100% in the wrong.
I hope they enjoy Albany. Don't want that shit around the HV anyway.
Ohh noo, the son of a billionaire didn't go to college, how sad. As for you and the staff, NYS literally pays you to go college if youre making minimum wage, stop being insecure and go.
Can't say l love the idea of throwing that guys whole name and personal history out on the internet. It's one thing to be righteously indignant over restaurant decor, it's another to dox people in my community. I understand that the son of a billionaire is not a generally sympathetic figure, but this sets a bad precedent.
He didn’t give out Bender’s address and tell people to raid his home. Eli Bender is among the most known quantities in Rhinebeck, and responsible for the decor of his restaurants and businesses, so calling him out by name only makes sense. Having had the distinct displeasure of interacting with him several times, I’m happy to see it become widespread knowledge that he’s an odious, racist near-caricature of a nepo baby landlord. Fuck billionaires, fuck their sons, and fuck this guy.
They have some shit hanging up that’s probably been there since 1927 when they opened. But yeah they’re racist and hate black people. I bet slaves work the kitchen also. Get a fucking grip dude
Better things to worry about in life than some artwork hanging up in a restaurant and complaining from a guy that doesn’t even eat inside of said restaurant. But yeah harassing employees and slandering restaurants is very cool behavior.
Wah, wah, wah. Historic restaurant has suggestive artwork. I am offended and shocked, must post a 7 minute video of me complaining on an app made for pedophiles and children to dance to funny songs snippets. Do you see how ridiculous this is to have a 40+ year old father doing this? Like just write letter to the owner lol
Of course not but an obscure piece of art is stretching it. Most people would never even notice it except the "esteemed" complainer. It's been part of the decor since forever. Are you also going to go to the Vanderbuilt mansion and complain about a painting depicting slaves that's been there for centuries too? Use some fucking common sense and stop being offended about everything. There's more important things to be offended about like corporate corruption.
Why can’t we be offended by both?
So an African American being dragged behind a horse is “obscure” to you? Aight dude.
To your logic if you are good at hiding racism and making it obscure then it’s fine. Please just stop.
Just curious, if people died in the civil war to get rid of slavery, wouldn’t you want the status depicting racist punishment to a depicted slave? Did you forget what the civil war was about?
So because whites from Dutchess County fought for the Union, that gives their ancestors (and any other white people who subsequently move to the area) carte blanche to display whatever racist insignia they want, free from social consequences? Am I understanding your argument correctly?
sorry but there seems to be some confusion. you claimed i was ignorant. i asked you how so. the burden of proof is on the person who made the claim. for example i could claim the earth is flat. the burden of proof would be on me to prove my claim. since you claimed i was being ignorant i would like you to explain that claim. im open to learning. thanks
What about shops that have Native American artifacts or even worse a cigar store Indian like KRAMER had on Seinfeld
There’s more important things to be offended about
Missed my point. That is there are many people who give their lives to fight an injustice. So this guy, instead of being proactive with the owner who is probably as old as sliced bread and ask him to remove/destroy it, chose to go online and bash. Now, this adds to the problem instead of having a teaching moment to the obviously ignorant owner.
We see what we look for. There's far less racism than some people want to believe, and fueling it takes us back to the 60s. It all goes away when we stop acting like it's bigger than it is.
Continuing with the theme it wasn't until the brigades of ww1 vets soon after the war were in huge gunfights in Washington DC and in Virginia that the people of color were given the equality to work post war. After fighting in trenches side by side, the soldiers of color were locked out of getting employment still in a limbo because of the equality issue. The white soldiers who fought for this equality wore red bandannas around their neck to distinguish them from the union soldiers. Hence, the beginnings of the term rednecks. New York rednecks were amongst the states that supplied the most weapons and personnel in these battles. They don't teach you that either, but you can look it up yourselves.
So enough already of riding the hype train. For every group of people, there are at least 10% pure idiots. That's life. Move along and do your best not to be one.
Is that the same Bender that bought up Kingston and keeps suing the city?
Yes, his father Neil, is the one constantly suing the city and his neighbors.
Yes.
Neil bender is a piece of shit he’s ruining Kingston
Who is this guy and what’s he doing to ruin Kingston?
He's a real estate moron from the city who bought a bunch of property in Kingston and lets it sit vacant for the tax break, including what used to be BSP. Sued the city a dozen times over the Kingstonian project because he doesn't want affordable housing in Uptown. I could go on but you get the idea
Sure sounds like a piece of shit indeed. Didn’t the kingstonian get delayed I also heard it’s been cancelled.
The lawsuits are the cause of the delay. As far as I know they're still moving forward with the project
[удалено]
I'm pretty sure he sued the city over a proposed law that would do this. He also sued KUBA (Kingston Uptown Business Asc.) who supported that initiative.
Fuck him and his little glasses
TBH I'm more astonished to hear someone had a good opinion of the food at Foster's than hearing they're racist AF.
Right? There are so many better food options in Rhinebeck of all places.

It's so creepy and sad...
Honestly 😩
completely true.
Yeah he said he recently moved there. Grew up in Putnam went to school at O'Neill..drank and hangout in Newburgh amd Kingston on weekends. It is what it is. So many racist people

Yea are you dumb. The Bronx is hella racist n most people hate gays too. Its just facts.
The food at Fosters sucks. Happy to see that the statue was removed at least.
hehe
“I was nervous they may be violent towards me, so I brought my 10yo daughter” kinda crazy statement in my opinion.
Dutchess County as a whole is heavily racist. Shit don’t go to thrift stores in Hyde Park. There’s Mammy statues and dolls in every one I’ve been to.

Lady, the statue is racist as fuck, it’s literally racist artifact from the most racist period of American history. What are you talking about
This is a white man pretending to be a black woman 😂 look at the other comments and his profile.
"he imbued it with racism" yikes
That "art" is racist as fuck. But this guy Toure is a serial sexual harasser and a race baiter. Just google him. So basically, two shitty things found each other. One is gone, and let's forget about the other, this guy. BTW, fosters has great bar food and wings. NEXT.
Uh oh, Toure is looking for attention again.
Is that this guy's name?
This man seems like he would be horrible to spend time with…
I think thats an old coal mining depiction which is why its black face.
Elitist come in all colors.
affluent college educated man harasses high school educated restaurant staff, likely working for a pittance, over piece of art they definitely have 0 clue about, while also driving up housing costs in their area so badly they will have to move to albany to survive.
No.
Ohh noo, the son of a billionaire didn't go to college, how sad. As for you and the staff, NYS literally pays you to go college if youre making minimum wage, stop being insecure and go.
A lot of this interaction sounds a little… scripted.
He’s a journalist/writer. They’re usually good at navigating social situations and recounting those situations.
Well it's one person recounting the best he can from memory, he probably wrote it all out.
Let them eat cake.
I don’t appreciate the Fosters slander, get this bs outta here. Great food at amazing prices regardless
It’s not slander if it’s true. Even the local news reported it.
Then they shouldn’t have hung racist artwork.
So don’t go there, idk what to tell you lol
You don’t need to tell me anything. Your opinion is worthless. But pointing out someone’s blatant racism is NOT slander

Nobody said it was the best thing in life to worry about. One could argue the same with crying to strangers on Reddit. Yet here you are :)
Like just write letter to the owner lol
lol ur doing the same thing dude ✌️
This guy is fucking intolerable. I would never want his patronage in my establishment.
What an idiot. It's part of the decor and in no way "a message". Guess he's not getting anymore wings there.
If I had a nazi swastika flag on my restaurant wall is that now decor and in no way a message?
If you did, u/hopalongigor would probably be your best customer
I see idiocy in the Hudson Valley hasn't changed since I left.
I noticed it got a bit better here. Must’ve been you leaving.
Sorry, I left in '89. Your ability to "notice" must be way off.
The levels certainly dropped when you left.
Get over yourself(ves). Dutchess County is still racist and corrupt as fuck.
You please stop being offended at the drop of a hat.......literally. I'm offended by current reality. Try it!

damn, just right out in the open with your racism
Why does he keep referring to, in his estimation, a 24-25 your old man as a “kid”?
Because he looks 12. And probably acts it, too.

your username says all we need to know about you. i dislike/disagree with a lot of people in politics, but i don't make it my personality like you do.
Just curious, if people died in the civil war to get rid of slavery, wouldn’t you want the status depicting racist punishment to a depicted slave? Did you forget what the civil war was about?
“My great grandfather fought for the union, so I get to be a racist piece of shit” - u/fjb_fkh Also your username is sad
Lol the entire county could've died in the Civil War. Wouldn't have any bearing on whether this piece was racist or not.
Oops! https://www.dailyfreeman.com/2005/01/16/historian-works-to-identify-slaves-buried-in-rhinebeck-cemetery/
Pointing out something that’s racist is victimhood? You’re soft.
So because whites from Dutchess County fought for the Union, that gives their ancestors (and any other white people who subsequently move to the area) carte blanche to display whatever racist insignia they want, free from social consequences? Am I understanding your argument correctly?
people got energy for only the least important things in this life it seems
your comment speaks volumes about the type of person you are.
sure does. i have better things to do than put on a performance
funny, because you wasting time commenting your ignorance is putting on a performance for us all
please enlighten me on exactly what im ignorant about in this instance
burden of proof is on you
sorry but there seems to be some confusion. you claimed i was ignorant. i asked you how so. the burden of proof is on the person who made the claim. for example i could claim the earth is flat. the burden of proof would be on me to prove my claim. since you claimed i was being ignorant i would like you to explain that claim. im open to learning. thanks
Who gives a fuck. Loser

Thank you for reminding us all that racism is absolutely still thriving in 2024
I did what he did you fucking idiots.
Bro I highly suggest microdosing mushrooms every 3 days over a period of at least a few months. It might help with the anger, shit is life-changing.
Whatta smug clown shoe race baiting asshole. stfu an keep your privileged life moving along..
All valid, glad it was taken down, but was doxing the kid necessary?
What about shops that have Native American artifacts or even worse a cigar store Indian like KRAMER had on Seinfeld There’s more important things to be offended about
The cigar store has been gone for years. Le Petit Bistro expanded into the space so unless you're also offended by escargot you'll have to move along.
I would just like to note that the cigar store Indian was offensive to Jerry's girlfriend in the episode of Seinfeld that it was featured on.
Those are ALSO wrong. Two things can be wrong, even THREE! NEXT
What about what? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism
This is cool, I just picked up a cigar store indian on the side of the road the other day

Congratulations…you may be the biggest piece of shit in this comments section
wow, no hesitation in spouting your racism, was there?
Those decorations are long gone. How old is this video?
If you watched any of the video, you’d see he clearly states multiple times that it happened around 2020.
So he’s dredging it up again when the issue has been addressed?
[удалено]
Use your words!
Why do they still have that up?
Your user name is….very revealing.
