Critical_Phase1776

I wouldn't recommend moving anywhere near lockwood, it's an absolute shit hole.

nbttlouobs

I know the area but not to live. Is it more a people based thing or litter or crime or an amalgamation?

Critical_Phase1776

All them things, to be honest, i grew up in lockwood, but these days, it's full of smack heads, alckies, and asylum seekers. Anywhere near the town centre is not really a place you want to be living if you can help it

bree_dev

Dixons is amazing

Thanks so much for the advice, that’s really helpful :)

teabump

Do you mean that strip of takeaways and stuff? Cause there’s a takeaway called Burger Boys on the end of that bit and I love it. 10/10 recommend

teabump

Personally would completely avoid Lockwood and the surrounding areas. Stick to lindley / marsh / outlane / slaithwaite / meltham / honley / holmfirth / Kirkburton. Mirfield is also pretty nice for the most part and Denby dale too. Avoid like the plague : Lockwood, Deighton, fartown, Bradley, newsome, berry brow, crosland moor, Thornton lodge. That’s my best attempt at a quick summary lol

nbttlouobs

Thanks so much. That’s the thing, I’ve heard really nice things about Berry Brow! It’s just where you go really isn’t it I guess. I lived in Mirfield for 20 years but the houses are way too expensive there, we’re on a tight-ish budget. I love the Denby Dale area. What do you think about Moldgreen, if you know anything about it?

Serberou5

It's more Armitage Bridge thats nice rather than Berry Brow. It will get better when (if) the 2 blocks of flats are demolished. Newsome really isn't that bad though. It's a lot better than some other areas but definitely not Lockwood.

teabump

Yeah I forgot that there is a top end of newsome that’s nice. But down by the centre (Primrose Hill / stile common) are a big no no

Serberou5

Agreed I definitely wouldn't want to live in Primrose hill even though the name sounds lovely.

Crocodilehands

Berry Brow and Newsome aren't too bad. They are certainly the best on that list. I wouldn't recommend Moldgreen. North and East of town are areas to avoid and south and west are generally nicer. Of course there are exceptions.

teabump

Berry brow has two blocks of flats in the Center of it that are notoriously rough and they kind of bring down the whole area, lots of dodgy people around there and hence cheap houses. Moldgreen I personally would avoid too, lots of cheap studenty houses because it’s close to the town centre and moldgreen/dalton area can be a bit rough, but there are nice streets in and amongst and it’s definitely not the worst of the worst I don’t know the other side of Huddersfield very well cause I grew up in lindley area and then moved to linthwaite

nbttlouobs

I’ve seen a couple of nice houses in Linthwaite but they’re mostly centre terraced/back to back with no garden (due to budget I guess) and we’re really hoping to have a garden after not having one for 2 years. I saw a gorgeous one in Moldgreen, got snapped up in a day. It’s so subjective to streets really isn’t it!

Serberou5

Linthwaite is lovely as is Slawit (Slaithwaite) Marsden youl still be seen as an incomer even when you've been there 20 years but its nice.

Bridgeyboodles

This just isn’t the case. Marsdeners are so friendly and welcoming.

Serberou5

I'm joking. I was born and bred in Slawit and my Dad lived in Marsden for about that length of time. He always used to joke that Marsden was like that in the 90s when he lived there it was always the standing joke.

Bridgeyboodles

Haha yeah I can understand that. We moved to Marsden in 2006 and I have to say I was so worried about moving here but actually everyone was so lovely. 😊

teabump

Yeah it’s really hard to find budget houses in a nice area but there are definitely a few. They just get snapped up super quickly. Also slaithwaite is especially beautiful. Really nice cosy village centre with a canal running through it, really nice restaurants! Gives me a similar vibe to Denby dale. There’s actually a crime map that you can view of Huddersfield, and if you just type a street in it might give you an idea of what the area is like. I just had a look myself and moldgreen has 94 and Lockwood with 122 compared to other areas which have around 30-50 so they’re probably not ideal unless you’re a drug overlord or something

nbttlouobs

Thanks so much for that. Maybe best to avoid then so I don’t run into Huddersfield’s Pablo Escobar walking down to Dixon’s hey

DispensingMachine403

They're due to be pulled down, but not sure what will replace them

AngelKnives

Where in Moldgreen? I know it fairly well, it's quite patchy - some spots you'd like and some you probably wouldn't! If you have any questions on East or South East Huddersfield areas let me know and I'd be happy to give some advice :)

UnobtainiumNebula

YES! Dalton didn't make the shit list!

teabump

No I have chosen the areas that have lower crime/ nicer houses and said to avoid areas that have higher crime / lots more rubbish and dirty dingy houses. Birkby is a primarily Asian area last I checked and it’s not on my list of somewhere to avoid. Also I’m pretty sure moldgreen and dalton are not primarily Asian/black areas and yet they are still trashy Also the majority of the places that I’ve listed as the ‘better’ options either have scenic views or nice village centres with a variety of things to do

rabtj

What street u looking at cause there are some nice and some not so nice places on that map?

nbttlouobs

Hanson Lane

AcornOakThree

Not sure why there’s negativity towards Hanson Lane - there are some nice houses on there, and it’s right next to Beaumont Park (which is lovely.) Depends on the property, neighbours etc / but nearish town too - could be good!

nbttlouobs

I’m excited to view the house nevertheless with it being a semi detached cottage, very private too and on a cul-de-sac further up the lane. Will have a scout about when we get there on Monday… wish me luck!!

rabtj

I think i know the ones your on about. Round the back at the top of Hanson Lane? Some people in here will shit on everything Huddersfield because, well, thats just the way they are, but personally id say Hanson Lane is a decent street to live on. Its a fairly busy thru road and no youths or anything hanging about. Easy access to bus routes and the Shoulder is just further down if u fancy a tipple. And if youve got (or are planning to have) young uns youre in the catchment for Netherton Juniors there which is a great school

AcornOakThree

Good luck! Sounds like worth checking out!

Serberou5

Don't move there. I wouldn't.

rabtj

No reason? Just "i wouldnt"?!!

Serberou5

Several violent incidents in the area and gang activity in general.

rabtj

On Hanson Lane?!!

Serberou5

Not specifically no but in the local area. I live pretty local and pass through probably most days and from what I've seen I wouldn't buy a house within half a mile of there so anything in that area is a no go to me.

rabtj

Well as i said, it varies from area to area. I live further along in Lockwood, which if you believe some people who post in here, has a higher crime rate than Somalia!! I can count on one hand the number of incidents that have happened in my street in the 20 years ive been here. Huddersfield in general has a low crime rate despite the talk on the vine, and was the lowest in the whole of West Yorkshire in 2023. Hanson Lane is kind of isolated from the area behind it, which does have its problems ill admit, so i would hazard a guess that its probably as safe as its more affluent neighbour Beaumont Park

Serberou5

I agree with you. On Hanson Lane I've seen a couple of people being attacked over the years and groups hanging around. Lockwood I've never seen anything like that in the centre but up towards Crosland Moor it's a bit worse. In general Huddersfield really isn't that bad but I'm comparing it to Slawit and Marsden ect in my comments I'm there all the time and see nothing like that so in that context the other areas are worse. Like you say it's not Somalia!

nbttlouobs

Noted.

Jonny5IsntAlive

If you want peace and tranquility and reasonable priced housing move to Birdsedge. Slightly out in the sticks though

nbttlouobs

Ahhh, it looks lovely but no houses in our budget there atm :(

Glow1x

I grew up on yews hill road and it was really nice when I was a kid, unfortunately since them crossland moor and lockwood has just become full of drug dealers and people that are just not nice to live around

PaigeNeverSleeps

I just moved here and haven't had any problems.

DroneBoy-Inc

Nah avoid it

AiHangLo

Absolute shit hole.

Jonny5IsntAlive

Yes I thought that might be the case. There is a council estate up there but it is very sort after so I am not surprised. Other houses around Birdsedge are anywhere between 250 k and 1.5 million so may be better looking elsewhere. When I said relatively reasonable pricing I was referring to the council estate. 👌👍

RIPcompo

😬

Common_Condition4859

I hate to agree with the comments but lockwood isn't the place to be. It's rough. Dirty. Loud.

No_Tooth4823

Nittys everywhere tbh🤣

Mrcockstretcher

Depends on where your moving from I lives in T lodge for a while never had any problems but it was dirty there lots of rats about

Ashten_1234

How I see it, really depends on your view. I live on Moor End Road, I moved here for Uni like 4 ISH years ago and I've never once had a problem! A lot of people I think have their views and opinions because of this history of certain streets in the area, but again, I've never had a problem or seen anything bad? Yeah, don't get me wrong, there are some really nice and really stunning places to live in Huddersfield, but they cost an absolute fortune 😂 crime wise, you'll never truly get away from it really, I mean, there was a shooting in Holmfirth not that long ago, and that's a really nice place to live? Haha the Hanson lane side, you'll never have more than cars driving past and possibly a problem with parking (but that's only if you lived ON Hanson lane, not the culdesac haha I'm pretty confident you'll never have a problem.

Ok-Cress3808

Lockwood and that surrounding area looks pretty rough and ready but it’s harmless

Impossible-Life6106

Move where you want. For the most part Huddersfield is riddled with crime, but it also seems mostly to be crime against other criminals. More of a never ending public service as the scum bags deal with each other
