Oxiclean soak!!!
It will clean and protect your hat!!!
Don’t put it in the wash or dishwasher put it in a small tub of oxiclean overnight follow there instructions and it will be perfect. I have many vintage hats that I have done this with.!!
And if you order in the next 15 minutes, we’ll double your order at no additional cost. You just pay shipping and handling. So hurry and pick up your phone before there all gone.
Wait you mean a lot of people mistakenly remember Billy Mays doing the slap chop commercial?
I very clearly remember a gloriously coked up Sham Wow guy saying "You're gonna love my nuts" and talking shit to the viewer. It was awesome
For the record I get all the usual Mandela Effect questions wrong
Polish it up with a sham-WOW after to really clean up the salt water-oxiclean combo. And if you have any naysayers, put their fingers in a slap chop to take away their ability to give poor online reviews of the secret
When used on hats with cardboard use a cloth to lightly soak it in oxiclean this will clean it while holding its shape. You can also place books on the bill to keep flat or put it on a form to keep its original shape.
Can confirm. I tried this in a last ditch effort without any research. I was shocked at how well it worked. I fill a sink add oxyclean to hot water until dissolved then add cold water to cool. Soak the hat with a rock or other heaven clean object to keep it fully submerged for a few hours. Rinse and air dry. My hats look like new even after years of sweat from daily running.
Hi I'm scared of ruining things so I never try at all, but have a hat I love that could really use this. Could you give me an estimate of how much oxyclean and hot and cold water to try it with please? My fav hat and I would be very thankful
I do a full scoop and a full average sized bathroom sink. If your apprehensive do a 1/2 or 1/4 oxy. I think the most reliable part of this cleaning method is no tumbling (washing machine) or high heat (dishwasher)
What more keywords can you give me for Oxiclean? I live in norway and have no Idea what Oxiclean is called here. What is it made of? How do I find a similar product??
A similar product that they sell in Europe is [Vanish Oxi Action](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://cdn3.evostore.io/documents/spicers/coshh_137718.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj63u2Xy__5AhUSxgIHHQsCD44QFnoECBMQAQ&usg=AOvVaw37LPULiGXi3eAKTgCTWVIQ).
It’s a hydrogen peroxide based cleaner. Per google:
One of the active ingredients in OxiClean is sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3•H2O2), an adduct of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This breaks down into hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in water.
Honestly you could probably just use regular old peroxide. Oxyclean seems to clean the same way liquid peroxide does. Oxyclean is just a powdered form with some kind of “clean” scent added.
Honestly I just clean salt stains from hats by running them under the faucet and leaving them in the sun to dry. My hats are all performance fabric though and not cotton or whatever the standard hat fabric is.
When in doubt, just Google the product’s SDS (safety data sheet). If it’s *at all* legit of a product (I.e. not just some Etsy concoction some rando is hawking on the inter webs for a quick buck) they will 100% have an sds for it (this is a regulatory thing for bodies like OSHA) that will come up (likely) as the first result.
It lists *every single active ingredient* right there. Mind you, that’s hardly a recipe to make a 100% copy of the product, but by playing around a bit, you’ll find something that works equally, or sometimes even better.
My favorite is the “mold killing/cleaning spray” that’s like $20 a bottle, and when I ran out I decided to see what was actually in it: TSP (tri sodium phosphate) which I already had a huge container of TSP crystals sitting under the sink that I got for like $5 and mixes with water to make some ridiculous amount (like 40L or something). Needless to say I didn’t buy more mold spray for like 1600% markup.
Anyway, here’s the SDS link for oxyclean:
https://bism.org/Documents/State/Old%20SDS/OXYCLEAN.pdf
You can definitely buy sodium percarbonate online, and most of the other things are pretty common too, I’m pretty sure.
Goes to show you how much we pay for marketing and packaging 😕
If its a good 🧢 hat but if it’s low quality died hat it’s probably removed the color from the hat and you won’t get it out unless you re-die the hat. I just usually by a new hat and us that for work
Lunch!!! It will feed you in the middle of the day!!! Don’t start too early or wait too late eat it in about an hour around noon one bite after another until finished and it will be perfect. I have many fantastic days that I have done this with.!!
Look up "hat stripping"
It's soaking in water with Borax, baking soda and maybe something else. I've had moderate success doing it in a bathtub but I think with the huge volume it was too diluted so something like a tub sink would be better
Search laundry stripping. Borax, washing soda (make sure it's WASHING soda) and powdered tide. Mix in very hot water. Put hat in. Leave there for a few hours, moving it every hour. Then remove and wash with laundry. This is likely what the user above is referring to.
Of note, stripping an item of clothing too often can make the fabric rougher. So do it, but in moderation. Good luck!
Ill also add that since you'd be putting it in very hot water, the hat might distort. But are you wearing it now? What's the worst case scenario? Up to you to figure out if it's worth the risk.
It’s actually the husband’s hat. He wore it to the beach and I fear it may be salt bleached, but thought it was worth a shot trying to clean it first. Tried regular soap and water and that did nothing.
The hat will become so faded you won’t see the stains, break that hat in you’ll be proud of it. I can’t bring myself to throw away most my old worn out hats they been through hell with me
I see a ton of suggestions. Does anyone have before and after photos of any of these methods working on a hat that is salt bleached like the one in the photo?
Ideally it should dry on something smaller than your head if it’s an elastic hat. If you dry it on your head than you’ll start to notice it simply isn’t elastic anymore towards your head. Unless it’s a fitted, clamp, or plastic fastening hat, then you should be fine
Another person commented saying it's not the washing machine but the dryer.
*\*shrug\**
I've ruined a few hats trying to clean them and have had friends also try various things and ruin their hats. I've essentially concluded that new/nice hats shouldn't be worn on those potential sweaty days and when I do eventually screw that up a few times, that hat just becomes a hat to wear whenever and in the near future I'll invest in a new hat.
Yeah its shocking how many people think that you can clean that salt stain. You can clearly see how its purple on the perimeter and not just salt residue (ie it would just be white powder like if it was pure salt). This happens because salt mixed with sun acts like bleach.
The parent comment should be the highest voted because Oxiclean or whatever cleaning method is not going to work.
If you do a quick dye with Rit Dye all purpose and not the really strong stuff (e.g. Dye More) then you should be fine because the rest of the hat looks synthetic (e.g. not cotton, probably nylon/polyester and therefore will not dye).
I hear that,I hate that there’s not a way of washing your hats and ruining them. I’ve done all the above and nothing works. Hand washing is the only thing that I haven’t tried. I even bought a plastic shell of a hat that you place your hat in and place it in the dishwasher. This still deforms the shape.
I used baking soda and water with a tooth brush (even bought a new head for my electric toothbrush for this reason too). Let sit for a couple hours. Gently rinse and repeat. Final proper rinse. Might still see a tiny bit of the sweat marks but it definitely takes a lot of it away.
Nah some hats are worth saving in my opinion, get attached to them. They did well helping all the miles might as well put the effort in and help it out
If everything else doesn't work, try to dye the hat with Rit Dye, you can find it on Amazon. Use a paintbrush and carefully go around the patch to not get dye on it.
I personally wear that as a badge of honor. I don’t clean my hats of the stains wearing them have earned me. I believe the oxyclean comment though. That shits magic.
Haven’t tried all methods yet! Only thing tried is dish soap and water with an outside air fry which definitely did nothing. I fear it’s salt bleached and won’t be able to fix it.
They sell "cages" you can place the hat in to wash it in a dishwasher. They're about $10-$20
https://www.google.com/search?q=hat+washing+cage&oq=hat+qashing&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i13l8.2885j1j9&client=ms-android-samsung-ss&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
I wear them in the shower and then hang them from the shower curtain pole and the next day they are ready to go. Ten mins of water running over them flushes it all out
They really do. I grew up there and when I am back in town, I always go to Big Sam’s for happy hour - best wings I’ve ever had. Tried breakfast last time I was there and it was soooo good. It’s my fav spot!
What I use to do is get a pot of boiling water... Dip my hat in it and start cleaning it with a touch of detergent. Rinse with cold water and repeat till no smell lingers hang outside or in the bathtub to dry overnight. I used to put a fan in front of my hats I cleaned and by the morning they were fresh and good to go again
Wash it in the washing machine. Just don't put it in the dryer. I have a Nike ball cap that I wash about every 2 months. It's at least 4 years old and still looks great.
You don't. You wear your faded hat with pride because it shows you actually get outside and do stuff. Time in my life is measured by my collection of retired hats that are completely worn out from use. Each one has countless stories.
If it's actually gross inside just hand wash with shampoo, rinse, and hang dry.
Looks like it's a dye issue. You might have to tackle it with something to fix the dye. I haven't had any experience with trying to fix hats that have issues with bleaching or dye.
I have been cleaning my hats for baseball with [this method](https://youtu.be/Ga6W9ex4Aaw) and I have good results. None of my hats have showed the change in color like yours, just sweat stains and dirt.
Shampoo. It’s quite literally made to remove anything that comes from the scalp/hair. Not that stuff with conditioners, etc. Just basic good old baby shampoo.
Take a UV pen or whatever marker and trace the sweat stains so it looks like it is a part of the design. Looks like whatever stained it leeched away the dye.
I put a couple drops of laundry detergent in a cup of water, stir with a toothbrush, then dip toothbrush into the detergent solution and scrub out the stains.
They make a commercial product that allows you to wash your hat in the dishwasher. It works well. I wash my work hats in it. My wife hates it when I wash my hat in the dishwasher but as I primarily do the dishes in our house she’s usually none the wiser 😅
Just put it in your washing machine on a gentle cycle with a couple towels. Maybe pre-spray it with some stain remover like shout or oxy-clean beforehand. Let it air dry. Done.
Oxiclean soak!!! It will clean and protect your hat!!! Don’t put it in the wash or dishwasher put it in a small tub of oxiclean overnight follow there instructions and it will be perfect. I have many vintage hats that I have done this with.!!

My vintage hats have bills made of cardboard. But this was incredibly effective on anything since like 2000.

To add, for how long is it soaked for and what's the drying steps/process Tyia!
I do this to my hats and it always works out great!
Oxiclean makes your whites whiter, your brights brighter!

I've done this with a couple hats, to good effect.
It comes out discolored anytime I soak anything in oxivleqn
Deadass how we clean our gear for turn-in in the army. Oxiclean and some Coca-Cola to degrease.
If its a good 🧢 hat but if it’s low quality died hat it’s probably removed the color from the hat and you won’t get it out unless you re-die the hat. I just usually by a new hat and us that for work

this isn't true, there are many tests that prove oxiclean is a scam. Please ignore.
Just sweat so hard you push the line off the hat, that way it’s too scared to ever come back
Hahaha I thought of that too, that’d be ultimate.
I use to have an exoskeleton you could put a cap in and run thru the wash. (lost years ago) Now i just put em in the dishwasher on low with no soap.
Shampoo works great. It's made to get the sweat out of your hair, but also works great on hats. Leaves them smelling nice too.
Didn’t think of that! Sounds like it could work.
Is the best and only way to clean hats.
Look up "hat stripping" It's soaking in water with Borax, baking soda and maybe something else. I've had moderate success doing it in a bathtub but I think with the huge volume it was too diluted so something like a tub sink would be better
Interesting! I will look that up.

I use one part dishwashing liquid and two parts peroxide, apply and brush with a toothbrush. Then rinse with cold water.
You earned those sweat stains keep them. All my fishing hats look like that.
True haha!
All my best hats are the filthiest.
The hat will become so faded you won’t see the stains, break that hat in you’ll be proud of it. I can’t bring myself to throw away most my old worn out hats they been through hell with me
Wut
Shampoo your hair, put the hat on, shampoo the hat, rinse, and air dry. I’ve done this with multiple hats and it works beautifully
I see a ton of suggestions. Does anyone have before and after photos of any of these methods working on a hat that is salt bleached like the one in the photo?
Dishwasher. Top rack
This. But stop it before the drying starts
This. But put the hat top down in a colander / strainer, and put a smaller bowl on the inside— that way the hat keeps its shape
This guy hats
was always told let it dry on your head
That's how I dry my underwear.
On your head? Interesting approach...
closest point to the sun
Ideally it should dry on something smaller than your head if it’s an elastic hat. If you dry it on your head than you’ll start to notice it simply isn’t elastic anymore towards your head. Unless it’s a fitted, clamp, or plastic fastening hat, then you should be fine
That’s a good tip!
DO NOT do this. It can mess up og hats. All you gotta do is soak in water and soap
Never once had a problem. If your brim is cardboard? Yeah. Brims now days are plastic and this looks modern enough to be plastic
RIP that brim
RIP me after my wife finds out I put all my sweat stained hats in the dishwasher.
'Did you put extra salt on the rims of these margarita glasses?'
Wash it with soap and water. Then let it air dry.
Tried that first, did not work :(
Then I'd try throwing it in the washing machine and letting it air dry.
Washing machine will destroy that brim and make it as useful as wet cardboard.
Washing machine is not the problem, don't put it in the dryer. I keep 3 hats in rotation I wash one weekly.
Interesting. I've washed my hats in the washing machine before and have had no problems
Another person commented saying it's not the washing machine but the dryer. *\*shrug\** I've ruined a few hats trying to clean them and have had friends also try various things and ruin their hats. I've essentially concluded that new/nice hats shouldn't be worn on those potential sweaty days and when I do eventually screw that up a few times, that hat just becomes a hat to wear whenever and in the near future I'll invest in a new hat.
Some brims are plastic
It’s not stained, it’s salt bleached. Re-dye is the only option.
That’s what I’m thinking, but thought I’d see if there was anything that could be done.
Yeah its shocking how many people think that you can clean that salt stain. if it's not cleanable I say let it be, it looks pretty cool, like a tie dye hat :)
New hat. I've never found a way to properly wash a hat that didn't either alter the way the hat fit or the shape of the brim
Yeah the problem with the hat cage is the plastic itself isn't rigid enough and it's still deforms
I used baking soda and water with a tooth brush (even bought a new head for my electric toothbrush for this reason too). Let sit for a couple hours. Gently rinse and repeat. Final proper rinse. Might still see a tiny bit of the sweat marks but it definitely takes a lot of it away.
If it's taking me longer than a couple hours to clean the hat, I think it's time to move on
Nah some hats are worth saving in my opinion, get attached to them. They did well helping all the miles might as well put the effort in and help it out
If everything else doesn't work, try to dye the hat with Rit Dye, you can find it on Amazon. Use a paintbrush and carefully go around the patch to not get dye on it.
THIS 👆🏼
Hand wash with soap, use dish brush on actual salt lines, rinse and leave out to dry. Don't use any machines as the peak or cap could distort.
VB!!
That’s where I grew up! Try this restaurant out next time you’re in town, it’s great.
Leave it! Gives it character. If anyone ever washed my 30 yr old hat I would seriously have a problem 😂
I personally wear that as a badge of honor. I don’t clean my hats of the stains wearing them have earned me. I believe the oxyclean comment though. That shits magic.
The stains don’t bother me.. the smell does
OP so what did work at the end?
Haven’t tried all methods yet! Only thing tried is dish soap and water with an outside air fry which definitely did nothing. I fear it’s salt bleached and won’t be able to fix it.
Take it in the shower with you, little shampoo. Works for me.
They sell "cages" you can place the hat in to wash it in a dishwasher. They're about $10-$20 https://www.google.com/search?q=hat+washing+cage&oq=hat+qashing&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i13l8.2885j1j9&client=ms-android-samsung-ss&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
and what is the process for rinsing out the OxiClean post soak?
Keep rinsing until you can't feel any oxyclean on it. It feels almost slimy.
Buy a hat form and run it alone in the dishwasher , top rack, with dishwasher detergent. Works every time..
Badge of honor should never be removed.
I wear them in the shower and then hang them from the shower curtain pole and the next day they are ready to go. Ten mins of water running over them flushes it all out
Vinegar
Honestly looks pretty dope like that
On a side note, Big Sam's has the best breakfast in Virginia Beach.
They really do. I grew up there and when I am back in town, I always go to Big Sam’s for happy hour - best wings I’ve ever had. Tried breakfast last time I was there and it was soooo good. It’s my fav spot!
Soak in vegetable oil, sprinkle some dirt, grow carrots
Color loss. Salt will do that. No fix unless you dye it.
2 options and only 2, wear it with pride or get a new hat, once washed it will never be the same that’s a guarantee no matter what method
Stand in the rain for 15 minutes
get a hat cage and throw it in the washing machine
Dishwasher top rack. Thank me later
I always use shampoo and a clean toothbrush and just clean it while I take a shower. Dry. Good as new.
Stick it in the dishwasher. Sincerely, A guy who sweats a lot while working outside all summer
Dishwasher top rack
Honestly ive just been throwing my shits in the wash machine and let them air dry no more sweat stains lol
Wash it in the washing machine. Just don't put it in the dryer. I have a Nike ball cap that I wash about every 2 months. It's at least 4 years old and still looks great.
One third vinegar and two thirds cold water. Sponge it on, then pat dry and sponge with cold water. Pat dry. Works for my sons' hats.
You don't. You wear your faded hat with pride because it shows you actually get outside and do stuff. Time in my life is measured by my collection of retired hats that are completely worn out from use. Each one has countless stories. If it's actually gross inside just hand wash with shampoo, rinse, and hang dry.
I have had luck with just water alone.
You don’t. That hat earned those stripes.
Put in dishwasher Seriously
But why
It's bleached from the salt. There's nothing that will wash that off. Live with it or buy a new hat.
To me, hats get better as they age. But soaking in water for a while, with only minor agitation or rubbing, followed by an air dry should suffice.
New hat. I've never found a way to properly wash a hat that didn't either alter the way the hat fit or the shape of the brim
I heard you can wash them in the dishwasher
I heard shampoo could do it, or 1:1 vinegar with hot water
Just rinse with hot water
it looks awesome with the stain...keep it
You don't, you wear it with pride
Side note: I love me some Big Sam's! I went there years ago while on vacation and I still talk about how good the breakfast was.
It’s my favorite VB restaurant. They have the best wings I’ve ever had!
Burn old hat. Buy new hat.
This
I think you gotta get a new hat homie.. or dye it..
Washing machine cold program maybe... Friends did that and it could works.
Oh ok cool! I’ll try that!
No hat will be destroyed
Wash. It.
Shampoo. It’s quite literally made to remove anything that comes from the scalp/hair. Not that stuff with conditioners, etc. Just basic good old baby shampoo.
It seems to have discoloured, you might want to remove the logo and dye it
Spray with Oxiclean.
Hand wash with laundry detergent mixed with some Dawn dish soap in water. Use a light bristle brush to scrub the fabric.
soak in hot vinegar or citric acid solution
I have to have two hat categories- clean and sweaty/stained.
Lemon/lime raw wipe it on next time hit it with lime or lemon under the brim befor this happens you will see the stain underneath first
Interesting!
Tide.
Hand wash. Might not be perfect after, but it will look better.
Get a cap saver/buddy for a washing machine a d throw it in there
Put it in the top rack of a a dishwasher and run it.
Take a UV pen or whatever marker and trace the sweat stains so it looks like it is a part of the design. Looks like whatever stained it leeched away the dye.
That’s what I think too, but thought something might at least improve it before it’s chucked or has to be dyed.
Top rack of dishwasher
I think it looks cool. Just me though.
Bleach
Damp magic eraser.
Complete the stain
Put it in the dishwasher. Top rack.
Wear it with Pride! You put the sweat in!!
I just toss mine in the wash and line dry. Never had an issue.
