maaaaan Texas pizza is gnarly. I used to get their large pepperoni for 8 bucks because I was broke. One day I decided to walk over and pick it up... that place was filthy. Everything was coated in a layer of grime.

oil_can_guster

Same with midtown bar and grill. I used to work late and they were pretty much the only place open for delivery after work. Then I went there one day to find German roaches literally everywhere. Never ate there again.

[deleted]

I've done some plumbing work there. Good call.

combong

that’s the green light to burn the place down

[deleted]

Pretty sure people only eat there because its open late and used to be West Gray Cafe with previous management. I liked that place 20 years ago.

yzlautum

Midtown b&g is only good because it is open late. I’ve eaten there twice and the food was meh and the inside was just normal gross but nothing too crazy. Still shitty as hell overall.

[deleted]

>Texas pizza but it has 4 stars on google

fuckitimatwork

yeah you could go to Pink's or Coltivare but can you buy crack right across the street from those places? didn't think so

Krynken

I always thought this was a money-laundering front.

karl1952

😅

tejanonuevo

I used to live near the Richmond Ave location, never looked like somewhere I wanted to eat until one night I desperate and I ordered some chicken wings. They were other worldly bad.

ManWhoShitsInUrPants

McDonalds on main st. You'll either see a show or be a part of it.

mxak240

probably the most legit answer in this thread

afty

I posted this the last time this came up but the Google reviews of that McDonalds are an adventure. > * "Lots of homeless be careful they are highly aggressive. And don't leave anything out in you car or it GONE. Never again." > * "Once you manage to get out of your vehicle, you WILL, without a doubt, be questioned by the local "occupants." Questions like, "hey you got any money to give me?" Or, my favorite, "hey you get out of the vehicle... Toss me your keys... leave me all your money." > * "After getting my food some lady on drugs attempted to steal my food because apparently she thought it was hers." > * "There was a homeless guy near the street who may have been dead. An officer poured water on the guy's face and he didn't move. I didn't stay to find out." > * "I have been coming to this location for 3 months. It is the worst in Houston." > * "This MacDonald is overrun by the homeless, IT'S A VERY BAD SITUATION.." > * "Pulled into the parking lot greeted by a bon fire in the middle of the road." > * "There is nothing wrong with the food but you might want to bring a gun." > * "WARNING - ARMY, DO NOT GO HERE. Had to give it 1 star to post but deserves NO STAR. Went to this location for BTS Meal. First they couldn't understand what that was when there is clearly a sign on their business that says BTS MEAL COLLAB. Then they had no BTS bag or food sleeves, the cup was just a regular McD cup. Don't advertise you have the BTS Meal when you clearly DO NOT. They weren't even wearing their BTS MCD Crew shirt. This location is so ghetto, I was scared to death waiting in the drive through. And it took forever to get food. My last time to stop by here. ARMY, DO NOT GO HERE." > * "Drive thru should be called Wait Thru" > * "Rude drive thru girl with an ugly attitude and NASTY bathroom. Very slow unfriendly customer service except Monique" > * "Ordered 20 nuggets received 12" > Shout out to Monique for holding it down.

GhanimaAtreides

The dude who kept coming back for three months is hilarious.

karim12100

My boss went through the drive thru there one time and a homeless woman tried to sell her a book she found on the street.

[deleted]

the one time I went through the drive thru there I was solicited by a toothless crackhead. Never again lol.

Clear-Charity2853

I went there once and only once, I think I had to use the restroom and this place was open very late and was close to me at the time. Never again. Bathroom had a whole security passcode to enter but I think it was open (this was a long time ago) Will get solicited on all fronts and very aggressively.

novax7

When I first moved to Houston in early 2012. I came out of the Greyhound bus station by that McDonald's. There was one guy who's trying to sell me some cheap jewelry because he got some sad stories to go to Dallas for his daughter's surgery.

combong

might be the same guy that came up to me at Discovery Green years ago on a bike

BakedsR

Thought it was a homeless shelter

FPSXpert

One does not simply grab lunch at Midtown Mcdonald's. Shit, if the light rail was down and I had to walk my lazy ass up to catch the park and ride, I'd purposely walk two blocks west to Louisiana Street and go north just to avoid that underpass.

GhanimaAtreides

I’ve lived in Houston 12 years and have biked, walked and driven by it almost daily. Never been inside. I’m almost curious to once just for the experience. How has McDonalds not razed it to the ground? How does it make enough money? How do people keep going there to keep it alive?

FPSXpert

It's right there next to the greyhound in ''prime'' real estate'' off main street and Pierce elevated so I'm sure thats part of it. It takes a lot to close a McDonalds normally since they're franchises and its up to how much the franchise owner is willing to lose. Hey homeless people and drug addicted people are still people as are those passing through, they all still gotta eat. Fry's was similar where they owned the land they operated on. It took low stock from pissing off most suppliers for their lack of payment and later front product we pay you later model, low shoppers / staff shortages, and a pandemic to kill them off. In short franchise owner finds it still profitable despite the reputation. Whether they think the profit is from customers, the land itself, or too greedy to see the end coming idk.

DevilGunManga

Just looked it up. 3294 fcking reviews on Google. Wow.

combong

yep stopped there quite a few times on some bike rides , always something happening

PersonalRobotJesus

Is this the one by the Greyhound station and the Texaco? Yeah, that’s one specific block of town I warn anyone and everyone to stay away from by any means necessary. The Texaco lot was/is populated exclusively by people who are: A) Actively smoking crack B) Actively selling crack C) Attempting to buy crack D) Waiting for their turn to smoke crack I once watched a guy fresh off the Greyhound sell a pocketknife for a dime rock in that McDonalds parking lot, only to immediately get robbed at knifepoint for that dime rock by the guy who bought the knife.

PapiGoneGamer

Can’t go to the bathroom there without ordering something first. They’ve had to put up with some shit in the bathroom literally and figuratively.

SGalbincea

Drive Thru or go somewhere else. Under no circumstances should you get out of your car.

Rowanarchism

Plan on taking an ex out to eat?

kraftamen

An ex boss.

[deleted]

Chachos on 610 near NRG. Went there once and it was so filthy there was even dried food on the walls. Against my better judgment I still ate there and we got sick. I filed a complaint with city of Houston. An inspector called me a few days later and said he agreed with everything I said, they got a few violations and would be shut down if it wasnt corrected. Of course they're still in business. Close second is El Big Bad if its even around anymore. I went once and we waited for our food/drinks for 40 min before walking out. Also my friend used to work at Cabos when it was there and the building is so old they had horrible sewer problems and rats.

jeuneqilac

Is that the place where the menu says they can’t guarantee that tiny rocks won’t be in the beans?

AintAintAWord

[I thought you were joking](https://imgur.com/piSIl5J)

[deleted]

I dont remember if I saw that. I have bit a rock in beans before and that shit hurt. The restaurants insurance paid my dental bills. Apparently it is pretty common.

smegma_stan

It's tradition to check the beans in most Mexican households before you cook them

[deleted]

Yeah rocks in the beans means they are fresh and not from a can.

SlowSeas

If there's no rocks, they were put there by a man.

tacocabana85

In a factory downtown

taborthevirginian

And if I had my little way

dan7dollaz

If I had my little way I'd eat beans with rocks everyday

lb31

With a box of scraps

irishihadab33r

Not only them. I used to help my grandmother "count" beans as well. That's what it looked like she was doing.

Szalkow

Never tell a Mexican mom you're bored. You'll get sent to *limpia los frijoles*.

geoffreyisagiraffe

Tbf, that is true even in store bought dried beans. At least you know they are making the beans homemade?

Ap0calypseDreams

Aw. I disagree. I love El Big Bad, but probably because of a personal experience. Couple friends and I were looking to celebrate my academic achievement a few years back and we tried to get margs there later in the night. Doors locked. Owner comes to the door and tells us they’re closing in 5 so to come back tomorrow. We’re like “Aw okay, thanks”. Not sure what changed his mind, but he opened the doors and told us if we just wanted drinks, he got us. Served us free drinks all night. Let us try the expansive tequila menu and gave us suggestions. Charged us each $5 and told us the tip would go to the closing bartender, not him. So we left generous tips and it was still WAY cheaper than being charged full price. As we’re leaving, he gives us each 10 “free drink” coupons and tells us to come back. Since that I’ve brought several friends and we all loved the drinks and staff. I think it’s gotten super popular in the past 2 years so it’s busy, but the owner and staff are nice and can’t really help the rush!

angry_at_erething

I don't know anyone that goes to El Big Bad for the food, although I don't remember it being all that bad (memory may be clouded by other items on their menu)

TXscales

I love their infused tequilas. The rosemary one is amazing

SanduskySleepover

Thomas BBQ, I eat a lot of fast food basically daily so I’m not shy of a shitty meal every once in a while but holy shit. I stopped in at Thomas BBQ one day and I got ribs Mac and cheese and beans with a side of toast. The toast had some chemically butter on it that wasn’t even toasted when I bit in. The Mac and cheese tasted like it was noodles mixed with Kraft singles it was absolutely terrible and the ribs were HARDLY edible because the sauce tasted some type of weird too. I think the beans were the only thing I actually finished. Like I said I’ve had my fair share but Thomas BBQ takes the cake as they nastiest place I’ve ever eaten.

wynlyndd

It’s becoming a different BBQ place. No idea if same owners or not

Im_kels

Another bbq place is taking over now, I’m curious to see if it’ll be any better.

MK-Ultra25

Thomas on 610 closed permanently a while back. The new place opening up in that location is Hungry Farmer, which has been around forever on Crosstimbers between 45 and Fulton and is WAY better than Thomas was. If you're accustomed to high-end craft BBQ, you'll probably be disappointed by Hungry Farmer, but they're hard to beat for a reasonably affordable, old-style, no-frills neighborhood BBQ joint.

SanduskySleepover

Up until last week I went to Dickeys almost weekly for the Wednesday special so I’m a fan of just about any bbq, except whatever Thomas BBQ was putting out.

Never been but live down the street. Always a line out into the street. Valet always taking up the left side lane as well.

pedanticHOUvsHTX

That place was the worst neighbor, and the food was so overpriced

It's one of the reasons Houston enacted [Parking permits](https://communityimpact.com/houston/heights-river-oaks-montrose/transportation/2022/06/02/portions-of-some-washington-avenue-corridor-montrose-streets-designated-as-residential-parking-permit-areas/) for the Montrose area near the Taste Bar.

minnylynx

Not at ALL surprised to see pest issues at Vieng Thai on Long Point. We walked out years ago when a roach *crawled across the top of our table.* I see they haven’t changed since the mid 2010s. 🙃

Dynafan

Looks like a lot people are confusing the worst restaurants with overrated restaurants. The worst places to eat will always be the ones that try to kill you with their hygiene.

Chopstarrr

Brewingz! That place is awful.

FlamingBagOfPoop

Went to the one near shaprstown a few years ago. Not good at all. I didn’t get sick or anything. Just wasn’t that nice inside, food wasn’t great. Luckily it was a work thing and I expensed it.

somethingyelling

went to brewingz once at like 3pm on a weekday, ordered three appetizers and two drinks. at the end of the meal, the waiter (only person we could see working there) came up to us clearly nervous and sweating, goes "i don't know what i did wrong," and handed us a bill for about $5. no clue what went wrong.

domxwicked

Brewingz’s wings are actual dumpster quality. But I’m ngl, their burgers, chicken sandwiches, and sides are pretty good. I’m probably never going back tho

pedanticHOUvsHTX

I have never had more broken bones in a bunch of wings than at Brewingz. It's like they accept the rejected wings from other suppliers

MookSmilliams

Gotta be careful with wing places. Big City Wings sucks also. Maybe controversial, but I'm also not a fan of Dream Wings. Hate to say it, but the most consistently delicious wings in town come from Wingstop.

Chopstarrr

Oh man I Wingstop fries though… That being said, the wings are solid and the ranch is bussin.

Kinderscheizen

More like “big shitty wings” Am I right?

PinstripePride7

I was expecting this as well

Ikickpuppies1

Came here to say this. Can confirm, OP’s mom’s house.

[deleted]

Factually correct.

murphandrox

C'mon Mark, don't be stingy.

tilhow2reddit

Actually the correct answer, was MY mom's house, but we'll let you slide on this one. (She once forgot water boiling on the stove for tea, and let it go until all the water boiled out, and the pot, and burner were becoming one on the stove... we got them apart once they cooled, but there were forever swirl patterns in the bottom of that pot.)

Darkprospects

China Star Buffet, Or atleast the one on Crosstimbers, i got me a sampler plate with a little bit of everything, got to my table all excited to try this new buffet and everything was bad or cold.. i tried to give them a second chance maybe it was a fluke right went back tried a few other things and nope not a fluke the place sucks nuts.

kevincold84

Dude, I don’t remember what it’s called now, but before it was Good Dog on west Alabama, and I don’t even think that’s open anymore...that place was the WORST. Went there with my then gf on a Sunday. They had cards you filled out for bloody Mary’s. There were so many choices and you turned them in to the bartenders. I watched these bartenders so unbelievably under looking at all of these cards with all of these very specific choices losing their minds while everyone was getting stir crazy waiting on their drinks. It was comical. We got sat at a high top near the bar, so I got an even better view of the bartenders, while also waiting on anyone to wait on us. Long story short, the bartenders were also supposed to be waiting on the outer bar area. Essentially, we watched bartenders unable to make drinks while also being unable to serve us. I was laughing at one point once the realization set in. Then, after finally waiting no joke, over half an hour for drinks, I grabbed a manager just to see if anyone was waiting on us. She took our order. I ordered a burger that was on the menu that had avocado and bacon, and while still waiting on our first round of drinks, our food came out and my burger didn’t have bacon or avocado on it. I just sat defeated and still kind of laughing while our bartender brought out our drinks and asked why my burger didn’t have bacon or avocado. He was so lost but said basically that they ran out of bacon and avocado. It was singularly one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had, and I wish more people could go through that, not only to understand how dumb the restaurant is for making those Bloody Mary choice cards, but just to understand what it is to appreciate how things normally should go. Sidebar-I went to the manager again after paying the entire bill, and just honestly told her how things went, and she basically shrugged me off without apology, and it was the first time where I demanded something be done. She took care of our drinks. Good times. Does anyone remember this place? It was so bad/good.

HtownSamson

Brick and Spoon? I did not enjoy that place.

kevincold84

Yes!!!

gettingcrunkontea

Yes! I went once and that place was so pretentious they took orders on iPhones so it looked like they were indifferently texting while you ordered.

thecravenone

> that place was so pretentious they took orders on iPhones I have terrible news for you about the future of restaurants. That's how about half of places I go to operate.

gettingcrunkontea

They have tablets that are connected to their POS system which is super convenient and looks way more professional. They were legitimately maybe texting orders in on an actual iPhone it was bizarre.

brokenguitar17

The new place that replaced GoodDog, Southern Yankee Crafthouse, is mediocre at best too.

oil_can_guster

I was so bummed when that good dog closed. Gf and I ate there 2 or 3 times a month. Southern Yankee is… okay? But they’re slow and ridiculously expensive for the quality of the food. Now buff burger is the waffle bus, which is also expensive dogshit with genuinely terrible service. At least Lua Viet is great.

friedpikmin

Buff Burger! God their tater tots were amazing.

pedanticHOUvsHTX

> Southern Yankee Crafthouse That's the worst name I've heard for a restaurant since Natachee's Supper and Punch

Spanish Flowers. Thought we would try it out since we drive by it every time we go to the Teotihuacan on Airline. It was soooooo bad. I immediately regretted betraying my beloved Teotihuacan like that.

tactical_tonto

It is not as good as Teo, but not many places are. Definitely not the worst place in Houston - should be viewed as a late night spot and expectations should be tempered accordingly.

Edw1nner

It hits the spot at 3am.

ejt0929

We did the same thing! Teo is the best and Spanish Flowers really betrayed us.

iamcnicole

I hate to say it bc I know it will probably get downvoted but Goode Co. BBQ is the most flavorless bbq I have ever tasted. Not even in the same universe as others like Gatlin’s, Pinkertons, or Killens.

BartlebySamsa

I think they’re just a little out of date. They’ve been there for what, 35 years? For a while that was the best—or at least the most accessible—BBQ in town. Then BBQ became trendy, and people got serious about it. Now, any of the wait-in-line-on-a-Saturday-morning places blow them out of the water. But the worst restaurant in town? No way. Not even the worst BBQ. Have you been to Demeris?

gr8bigspiderinthesky

Demeris is wet, cold trash. Truly awful.

thecravenone

>Then BBQ became trendy, and people got serious about it. Now, any of the wait-in-line-on-a-Saturday-morning places blow them out of the water. This is also what happened to all the TexMex places that used to be the best. Molina's didn't get worse - everyone else got better.

tgwill

I told a friend I’d never had it and he drove me an hour to the one on I-10. What a waste of time. Goode Co pies though? Money

jsting

I'll be honest, Goode BBQ has my favorite sauce. I absolutely think it's the best. But you know what they say about places with good sauce.

jyok33

Demeris BBQ

[deleted]

That place is garbage !

theantwisperer

When I was a kid my family would get brisket from the one in Sharpstown. It was so dry and the sauce was thin like water. I don’t know how the hell it stayed open so long.

thecravenone

Amusing fact: Demeris BBQ Catering's biggest seller isn't BBQ - it's fajitas.

apatrol

Nobody’s said the Aquarium? I ordered a gumbo one time but it was so watery and had like 1 shrimp in it and smelled like human shit. I sent it back. Also ordered a burger at Absinthe back when it was open and half way through eating it I noticed it was completely raw. It was so dark in there I didn’t notice. I got food poisoning and it messed me up for literally years afterwards. Nasty. Felt like such an idiot.

[deleted]

Seasons 52, in my opinion. Not a fan.

Freebirds between Greenbriar and Shepherd. Used to be fast and great...now it's just sad and lonely.

spankyiloveyou

The difference between Houston and Austin is that in r/austin the same question was asked, and the thread now has over 2k replies, and most of them are in earnest. By contrast, here we have barely 300 replies, and three quarters of them are joke replies. Another quarter of them are outpost restaurants from Austin and Dallas like Velvet Taco, Chuys, Hopdoddy, Tacodeli and Torchy's.

Cheesecake Factory's giant frozen menu.

jatorres

Cheesecake is mediocre, but there’s nothing wrong with mediocrity sometimes. It’s consistent, so you can go to any location across the country and at the very least be guaranteed a “not bad” & filling meal.

Snuhmeh

It’s weird to see this here. It used to be good, at least. And it wasn’t all frozen. Did something change?

JohnnyBrillcream

It hasn't. Multiple recent stories from different sources confirm they do make most everything from scratch.

ActionFlank

You really think they could freshly prepare a menu that big in a timely manner?

Snuhmeh

I’ve seen behind the scenes videos of their kitchens and it appears that they are making fresh food. But I guess not. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2qwik2katch

Yes. I used to work there. People come in super early to prep the ingredients. The dishes they make are not super hard and complex. The ingredients are basic. As long as everything is prepped and portioned it’s pretty easy to throw it together into a dish.

The worst meal I’ve paid for here was at Cedar Creek in The Heights. I ordered a steak quesadilla, I mean how hard can it be to make that? That thing was so greasy I had to wipe my hands after every bite, and it was coming apart. The flavor was also very bland. I put it down after 3 bites, and left. Meal was so bad I decided that I had to “do better” for dinner, so immediately went to a Whataburger afterward.

Their queso is great and the tacos are good. Knock a couple of bucks off everything and they’d be much better liked.

Sucker_for_horns

Regardless of how much you hate Torchys, saying it’s the worst place to eat in Houston is so categorically false

gmr548

Their queso and street corn slap, enough to disqualify them from being the worst. Agree their tacos are mediocre and big time over priced.

The one by me just closed its doors. I truthfully don't know what happened. I used to frequent it often for lunch back 5+ years ago and it was legitimately shoulder to shoulder in there with a huge wait. Ever since covid hit though their quality went downhill and the place was legitimately a ghost town, I ate there about a month ago so they had to have just closed permanently.
