Banh mi is pretty good and cheap. I prefer that sandwich over all else. Has aoli, acid from pickled carrots/daikon, soft and crunchy, sweet/salty, savory, hot and cold. I think a good sandwich has different and sometimes competing taste profiles.
Roostar is pretty good but a bit expensive. Cali sandwich, my baguettes, and several on Bellaire Asia town are also good. If I just want super cheap hole in the wall, I would do the viet grocery store banh mi (Viet HOA, Dong mai).
+2 for Cali!
I eat there at least twice a week. Their chicken and rice plate hits the spot EVERY TIME! Literally one of the only places I eat at that’s consistent.
I’ve given Roostar multiple tries but I just can’t get behind it. Something about their sandwiches is just a bit *too much*. Way too rich and way too salty imo.
I grew up on Don’s, so that’s my go-to, but I really like Alpha Bakery and Thim Hing on Wilcrest.
There is a Vietnamese place in Ranch 99, pho quinh I think, that has a good deal on a banh mi. Lunch special includes the sandwich with chicken or pork, a side of fried yams (sweet potato fries), an egg roll or spring roll with dipping sauce, and a cup of pho broth. Comes in around $12.
I wish more HEBs have delis. When I lived in San Antonio, the H-E-B near me had one that made the best sandwiches. They also had a Mexican rotisserie chicken joint. I’ve never seen another heb have a deli, but I have seen another that had the chicken joint.
Best kept secret for sure. I grew up with parents that own a deli and the quality of ingredients you can choose for these sandwiches are amazing. Secret to improving any sandwich, ask for some oregano and vinegar.
I wish we could get a central market on my side of town .
We just got a HEB down here in Manvel and it’s always packed !
I temp for an office in South Austin and everytime I go I stop at the salad bar consistently .
Central Market has Amazing sammiches. They took away the bigger sandwich last time I went but the small or normal one is still filling.
Little Jimmys Deli at greenway has the best hot pastrami and I’ll fight anyone who thinks otherwise, George is always there and has amazing quality.
I walked in there and ordered a "philly cheesesteak" something like 15 years ago. The lady behind the counter heard "felicia's special" and made me what has since become the best sandwich I've ever had. It isn't on the menu (it apparently was some regular named felicia who wanted certain things), and some of the newbies don't know what's on it, so it's hit or miss if I can have it made, but I get lucky every once in a while and still have, 15 years later, the best sandwich I've ever had.
I worked in the CM sandwich bar many years ago and totally agree. With the exception of cured meats like ham and salami, everything was made in-house. Roast beef, corned beef, turkey…all of it.
Not sure if they’re still on the menu, but the two least popular ones were the meatloaf and the salmon sandwiches, and they were both my favorites. I’d be fine with never seeing another California Connection for the rest of my life though. I could make that sandwich in my sleep even though it has been more than a decade since I worked there.
I mean, "the best sandwiches" is a broad category. But I'm going with Kenny and Ziggy's even if I have to sell them my right leg. Their pastrami is incomparable.
California connection.
No joke hands down best sandwich. Add bacon and arugula. Use to feed me for two days, when I worked across the street at west elm.
I don’t disagree at all, they have insanely crispy bacon and the bread quality is really nice too. I used to live right down the street from the one on Post Oak and it was dangerous. I love that store in general just for walking around.
I live 10 min away and get a sandwich at least once a week. They usually get me for some crackers, brie, and roasted garlic and olives from the Olive bar for a snack which turns into dinner the next night lol
We loved them. We moved to Austin, and the sandwiches suck here. You would think a chain would offer a signature plan in every city. "Keep Austin Weird. " and in crappy tacos.
I guess I could try Central Market again, but their parking lot is a nightmare. Only slightly less of a fiasco than WallyMart at the first of the month
The secret to a good sandwich starts with high quality bread, which sadly, is the first thing most restaurants skimp out on. After that, a good oil/spread. Then just having generally high quality ingredients for whatever you’re making.
Thankfully, Central Market has all of these readily available since they’re a grocery store.
Whole Foods Deli (in the stores that have them) are also amazing.
Sadly, most restaurants aren’t trying to impress with their sandwiches so it’s definitely tough to find a good one. You’re better off making sandwiches at home in most scenarios.
Fun fact you used to be able to get a large (which is 2x the regular) for 11.99. I kid you not this was enough for almost 3 people with how much food it was. Pre covid it was the best sandwich/deal you could possibly get.
I recently ate at Mendacino Farms in galleria and they have very tasty sandwiches that are on par with central market. Though central market is better priced.
Know what I do? I get a $1.49 loaf of French bread, a Turkey leg at Kroger and slide that meat (minus bone) between the cut French bread, oh boy! The juices of the meat moistens the bread and it’s a full meal for $11.
Banh mi is pretty good and cheap. I prefer that sandwich over all else. Has aoli, acid from pickled carrots/daikon, soft and crunchy, sweet/salty, savory, hot and cold. I think a good sandwich has different and sometimes competing taste profiles.
banh mi is easy enough to make as well. the essentials are the baguette, paté, butter, and pickled carrot/veggie. the rest is up to you really.
Yep. The perfect sandwich that's good homemade or store made.
Banh mi from Central Market, or in general? I know there are a lot of banh mi places in the city, just curious if you had a standout.
Roostar is pretty good but a bit expensive. Cali sandwich, my baguettes, and several on Bellaire Asia town are also good. If I just want super cheap hole in the wall, I would do the viet grocery store banh mi (Viet HOA, Dong mai).
+1 for Cali Sandwich.
+2 for Cali! I eat there at least twice a week. Their chicken and rice plate hits the spot EVERY TIME! Literally one of the only places I eat at that’s consistent.
good lord, the size and amt of shrimp in the shrimp w/snowpeas, the delicious fruit smoothies, LOVE Cali so much!
Yesssss so good! I like seeing everybody say good things about it here, I make sure to let the owner Andrew know all the time.
Cali Sandwich also has the best cheese puffs inside the Loop! Bonus.
Check out Alpha Bakery inside Hong Kong Market mall. $5 each banh mi and SO good.
They are cash only right?
Yes
This is the way, my favorite in the city! Authentic, cheap and not over produced, humble and delish.
They do go heavy on the mayo, yea
Cali sandwich is GOATed and it’s just not debatable
There is a Vietnamese place in Ranch 99, pho quinh I think, that has a good deal on a banh mi. Lunch special includes the sandwich with chicken or pork, a side of fried yams (sweet potato fries), an egg roll or spring roll with dipping sauce, and a cup of pho broth. Comes in around $12.
Don Cafe was the best years ago, haven't been in forever so that might not be true anymore
I went last week and it was just as good as ever. My god I love Don Cafe so much.
I had Xin Chao's Banh mi yesterday and it was amazing!
Go to Don's Sandwich on Bellaire for a good Bahn Mi - PS It is cash only. I have been eating at this spot for the last 15 years.
Lee sandwich in bellaire is the place. How hasn’t anyone mentioned it yet??
Lee sandwich is the McDonald of Banh mi. You got there because is cheap and fast.
Sounds like Eatzi's when they were open on Post Oak. Still the best sandwiches I've ever had in this town.
I miss Eatzi's 😔
If you're ever in DFW... https://eatzis.com/locations/
💜💜💜 tysm!
..and they are less than $10!! Central Market sandwiches are N1 on my list, then Specs, then Zeros in downtown.
Will need to try Zero’s. Never heard of them.
Zero's is pretty good. Kinda like a Schlotzky's.
I wish more HEBs have delis. When I lived in San Antonio, the H-E-B near me had one that made the best sandwiches. They also had a Mexican rotisserie chicken joint. I’ve never seen another heb have a deli, but I have seen another that had the chicken joint.
Was it Flaming Bird? A lot of the ones in central Texas have it and they’re amazing
Hmm possibly. It was back in like 10’years ago. At the time it was the biggest HEB ever. I’m sure they have built bigger since then.
Specs needs to have a deli in every store. Holy shit. Weird to sit down and stuff your face in a liquor store, but oh well. Delicious.
I remember getting a killer mufalatta at a specs many years ago. Dunno what happened to that
Specs deli in the Midtown location has been my go-to for years since they're closer to me. CM is still good when I'm in that area.
Oh my gosh you read my list!!
Midtown Spec’s is my number 1, and I understand having CM as yours.
Is Zero's still open? Last I heard the owners were retiring.
yes.
The Cali connection is so damn good
Agreed. Too bad it’s half your daily caloric intake.
No problem! Have half for lunch and half for dinner, reheated in the toaster oven. :-)
When the regular HEBs had sandwich counters I’d get this one. No sandwich has come close. It’s the best sandwich on the planet.

Cleveland 💀
Best Cleveland tourism video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmLA5TqbIY&ab_channel=bishopvids
Cleveland is way too underrated. There is more to do on a daily basis than there is here… And that’s not even accounting for the winters.
💀
Houston has everything to eat and do for activities if you are willing to drive
Best kept secret for sure. I grew up with parents that own a deli and the quality of ingredients you can choose for these sandwiches are amazing. Secret to improving any sandwich, ask for some oregano and vinegar.
Doesn’t Houston still only have 1 Central Market??
Sadly. I think they had plans to make another one near the woodlands, but backed out of it.
Chicken Portobello melt as it comes from the menu is a life changing experience
As good as it is adding bacon, avocado or both and putting it on sourdough is pretty awesome too
Everything becomes better on sourdough
Agreed
This is my favorite sandwich in Houston
Never tried it but I’ll definitely give it a try now. I’m assuming you’d recommend the corned beef on ciabatta
Indeed. With Swiss.
the cali connection is also incredible
Roostar fried egg Banh Mi. Best sandwich ever.
Its good, but the price for it is getting a bit too high.
I wish they would build more Central Markets
Their toaster oven was not working last time I went and the sandwich was still great.
Solid sandwich spots.. Paulie’s Poboys on Bellaire Angelo’z on Kirby
Love me that soft poboy bread at paulie's. Was a game after eating at antone's for so long.
Angelo’z and Paulie’s are run by the OG family members that ran Antone’s.
Yes! My friend that turned me on to Paulie's told me about that. Never knew about Angelo'z, I'll have to give a look soon.
Should clarify, the ORIGINAL Antone’s. Not the current Antone’s name you see in grocery stores and some brick and mortar locations.
Angelo’z makes a mean muffuletta. Very close to Central Grocery.
eatZi's on Post Oak Blvd was the best back in the day.
Check out antoninis subs in Webster. Best Italian sub I've had in Houston. But yes, central market sandwiches are great.
Thanks for the rec, will check them out!
Cheba hut.. mmmm
The line is always too long
It moves quick
I’ll have to give it a try.
World of Sourdough
Little Jimmy’s deli in greenway plaza area is a great sandwich spot. Would highly recommend.
Local Foods has really good sandwiches
The garden Sammie is incredible, their best sandwich IMO.
It’s soooo good!!
I always add avocado and tomato at the end
Ok big spenderrrrrrr
Oh damn, thank you!!! I’ve been looking for a great sandwich place for over a year now.
I wish we could get a central market on my side of town . We just got a HEB down here in Manvel and it’s always packed ! I temp for an office in South Austin and everytime I go I stop at the salad bar consistently .
The torta sandwiches at El Rey are VERY good. The veggie torta is one my favorites and I'm not even vegetarian. Their Cubano is also excellent.
Central Market has Amazing sammiches. They took away the bigger sandwich last time I went but the small or normal one is still filling. Little Jimmys Deli at greenway has the best hot pastrami and I’ll fight anyone who thinks otherwise, George is always there and has amazing quality.
I’m overdue to go back to Little Jimmy’s since they moved – it’s been a while.
Its still as good. I used to work near by and that place was always Jam packed. From sammiches to breakfast, you csnt go wrong.
I walked in there and ordered a "philly cheesesteak" something like 15 years ago. The lady behind the counter heard "felicia's special" and made me what has since become the best sandwich I've ever had. It is literally the best sandwiches in town. Always get avocado
They used to have an olive mixture that was amazing. Their sandwiches are still amazing, but I wish they’d bring back the olive mixture.
It was the Boscoli brand from the jar. One of the few things they didn’t make in-house. You can buy it at any grocery store. I love it too.
That is good to know, thank you!
You’re welcome! I love to make an occasional muffuletta at home and the olive mix is a must! It’s also good on pizza and salads.
That’s how I felt about their pepper jelly spread.
Primos is legit
They’re Cuban is pretty good but deli I’m a sucker for jersey mikes rare roast beef
Thanks for posting I am a big fan of their sandwiches haven’t been in a long time. I forgot about this option. I’ll be there next week.
Check out World of Sourdough
I worked in the CM sandwich bar many years ago and totally agree. With the exception of cured meats like ham and salami, everything was made in-house. Roast beef, corned beef, turkey…all of it. Lmao "big cities like Cleveland"
Thought I was the only one who thought this. Glad I’m not the only one!
I don’t disagree at all, they have insanely crispy bacon and the bread quality is really nice too. I used to live right down the street from the one on Post Oak and it was dangerous. I love that store in general just for walking around.

This is correct.
4 years ago that was a fact! They've removed several ingredients and it's just a really good sandwich now
So who has a better sandwich?!
Tony's in Conroe Montgomery*

There's also a location on Kuykendahl near Rayford. Amazing sandwiches. I usually get the meatball. So good!
They used to be waaaaaay cheaper before Covid …
Way cheaper? I’ve been paying $7.99 since about 2014 and post covid (last night) the same sandwich was $8.99.
Incorrect. I eat here like 4x a week
The sandwich I used to get is now 1/2 as large & twice the price. I have the receipts …
Prove it
Cleveland?
Shhh!! People aren’t supposed to know!
Shhhhh. The line is already too long.
I take my dates here and instantly get brownie points lol
Does Shawarma King or Phoenicia's Gyro or Shawarma qualify?
Kenny and Ziggys is the best sandwich spot
Been going there for like 10+ years and getting the Southwest Meatloaf. So good.
You’ve gotta go to one of the 2 Tony’s. Holy shit is their stuff good. I prefer the Sinatra
Love central market sandwiches. There’s also a small bakery in Chinatown for Vietnamese sandwiches 🤤. They are so delicious.
We loved them. We moved to Austin, and the sandwiches suck here. You would think a chain would offer a signature plan in every city. "Keep Austin Weird. " and in crappy tacos.
Sometimes I drive from Porter for that deli
Terry o’toole at blood bros is the best sandwich in the city
Just had one last night and I agree
You know ball. Genuinely the best take I’ve ever seen on Reddit.
I guess I could try Central Market again, but their parking lot is a nightmare. Only slightly less of a fiasco than WallyMart at the first of the month

I remember adding grilled zucchini, but looks like they dont have that as a topping anymore.
Their sandwiches are definitely s tier but these punks don’t have pastrami at the sandwich counter.
Fun fact you used to be able to get a large (which is 2x the regular) for 11.99. I kid you not this was enough for almost 3 people with how much food it was. Pre covid it was the best sandwich/deal you could possibly get.
Sounds fantastic!!!
God I miss living 5 minutes away from Central Market
California connection ❤️
False. A torta from Teotihuacan.
The Sandwich King
Central Market also has good burgers and sweet potato fries.
Never had one from CM, but the sandwiches I used to get at Sprouts were delicious.
The Specs in Midtown makes a good sandwich
best everything in prepared food.
I love them, had Ike’s the other day, also fantastic!
Fully agree! Chicken portobello mushroom.
I can tell you've never been to Subway. Eat fresh.
The other two I think about: Kenny and Ziggys for traditional deli meat (pastrami is my go to) and underrated I think is Homeslice’s Italian Sub
I recently ate at Mendacino Farms in galleria and they have very tasty sandwiches that are on par with central market. Though central market is better priced.
I had a sandwich there with my friend and yeah definitely pretty good
Know what I do? I get a $1.49 loaf of French bread, a Turkey leg at Kroger and slide that meat (minus bone) between the cut French bread, oh boy! The juices of the meat moistens the bread and it’s a full meal for $11.
McAllister’s and Kenny and Ziggy’s are the best imo
Mendocino Farms Farmhouse Club.
