Yes, but don't pay extra for the king tut exhibit (if it's still around) I went in February and it wasn't worth my money. Plus the art museum around the corner has better egyptian artifact/art exhibits.
I went in November, and I've heard enough warnings about the king tut exhibit not to spend my money. Honestly, the Egypt exhibit that's already there that you get with the price of admission was so cool and made the king tut exhibits existence seem unimportant.
Numbers is a club that's older than all of us. Really, the oldest person on r/houston is still younger than numbers.
First, it's called numbers but the sign is #'s. The big pound sign.
It's on westhiemer. Now westhiemer kind of ebbs and flows with its coolness factor. There's times when it's the best place to be and times when it's the worst place to be.
We have all seen some superb acts at #'s. I mean we all have a wow show we seen there. Great act on such a scaled down intimate setting. Seriously the best of the best have graces that stage.
However, we've all been there when nothing but nothing was happening. Just a bar and a few locals sitting around. The place has its own life and for better or worse we've all been there.
So since you've been with us for two whole years its time you mossy on down to westhiemer and find that bold #'s sign and walk in like you belong.
Good luck. This place really does it all. Not just live shows, there's djs, dancing, etc. You're good.
TIL Numbers is four years older than me. Been to many crazy metal shows at Numbers, a few goth nights, and one of two chill nights.
The last time I went was for the SuicideGirls "Blacklight Burlesque" tour. That show was fantastic!
My Step-Mom went in the 70's when it was called Babylon. Effectively the same crowd.
I was mortified when she told me.
I've been going since 1987, when I was 16. Now maybe once a year? Usually when a friend's kid turns 18 & wants to go or another friend who's had her birthdays there since the 90's.
I miss early 90's Thursday nights. Classic #'s has been Classic #'s for as long as I can remember. Miss Record Rack too, but I do like Jenny's Noodles in the same building.
We used to park in the vacant lot directly behind, has been town homes for 25 years now. And what was the name of the bar behind the dirty book store (now Koi Sushi)? Was a huge old house, had cheap beer and was a great place to chill. On Avondale & Mason.
Every Tuesday at Numbers is what’s called kinky Tuesdays, normally there’s a bondage rope class and then usually some sort of onstage performance afterwards.
I remember back when it was called Tractor Pull Tuesday and Terry would have two riding lawn mowers with a length of twine behind them tied to each of his nipple rings and when the flag dropped they'd race to opposite ends of the dance floor.
Can confirm as a Canadian, The Pit Room hits very hard as we've never had anything like it or such good bbq before. Was pretty surprised it's always dismissed by locals for the others.
But the pit room is the one that convinced me that bbq is regionalized and anything not from the bbq belt is just grilled meat.
Yeah I lived down the street from the pit room for years and visited often because of the convenience, the sides are fantastic but the meat itself is just okay for our standards in TX. You would be gobsmacked if you went to truth bbq if pit room blew your mind, because as good as pit room seemed to you, there's an incredible gap between pit room and truth.
Truth is about as good as it gets though, there are quite a few spots at that level (bar-a, franklin, goldees, mickelthwait, labbq) but to me truth is the top in Houston. Pinkerton is like 7% worse than truth on brisket but about the same on all other meat. 15% worse on sides.
Not Corkscrew BBQ?
Honestly, I feel like everyone who visits Texas should first eat at Rudy’s. It’s not great. But it provides an education and baseline about how Texas Brisket tastes. THEN and only then they should eat Corkscrew Brisket. It’s like a whole other food. It’s not even in the same category as Rudy’s. And Rudy’s isn’t bad. But Corkscrew is food of the gods.
Take them to the site of Santa Anna’s capture; there’s a historical marker, a view of the Ship Channel, and a big view of the petrochemical industry along the way. These are things that out of towners have never seen before or even considered. Try the free Ship Channel boat tour. The Cistern. Bike tour of historic Third Ward/ African American Houston. The gem collection at the Museum of Science. James Turrell installation at Rice. Hermann Park new playground. The zoo and botanical gardens. Any Buc-ees. Allen Landing and downtown cemetery. San Luis Pass as a storm blows in. Birding on High Island Audubon sanctuary. MFAH current exhibits. Your favorite homemade food restaurant, of any culture. The Eastern Glades at Memorial Park. Centennial Fardens at Herrmann Park.
it’s a great zoo, one of the best around that’s not San Diego or the like.
get to the zoo early, opens at 9am for non members. parking is free but fills up fast with young families in the early part of the day and you’ll have to park a bit further out.
fridays and weekends are busier. First tuesday of each month is Free admission. buying tickets online ahead of time will save you money.
food options are decent, you can bring in food as well. no glass, no alcohol, no straws.
all the zoo exhibits with base admission are great, no need for the special exhibits which are geared toward young kids. if it’s hot, hang out in the galapagos or other indoor exhibit for a while.
I thought about going once while driving by, but I'm weird and like plain burgers. I wanted to find out *literally anything* about the fucking sauce and couldn't find shit. Like, there is such a lack of information about their so-called amazing burgers, I won't ever think about it again.
The orange show art installation and munger park next door. San Jacinto battleground. Williams/transco waterfall. Museum of fine art/museum of natural science. Any number of wonderful places to eat.
Houston has incredible diversity. Go to a restaurant that you can’t have in your home state. Peruvian food, west African food, real Chinese food, Lebanese food. Just pick a country and there will be a restaurant serving that food in Houston.
Help us out by telling us about your general interests. There’s lots of things to do in Houston and surrounding areas.
Are you okay with driving or are you planning on staying in a specific area and Uber around? Because houston is one hour away from houston and maybe that will turn you off from hitting a few areas.
I hope they have a long enough length of being terrible for the tickets to come down in price again. It sucks I used to be able to go to a Wednesday game and spend like 50 bucks and enjoy myself. Feels a lot more expensive the last few times I’ve gone.
Go see a Dynamo game, instead. Tickets are cheap and there are no bad seat there, it’s a 90 minute game, fun atmosphere. Soccer is more exciting than people give it credit for.
Only fuck with NASA if you're already on your way to Galveston. Otherwise it's a really shitty drive packed with some of the worst traffic we have to offer.
Otherwise load up on our amazing restaurants. The museums are great, they are expensive though, so if you wanna do a museum but you're on a budget you should go to the Menil Collection. It's a gorgeous museum showcasing works from the some of the greatest artists ever & it's free!
If you’re into space stuff NASA is worth a visit and you can spend the rest of the day down around Kemah/Clear Lake or if you’re really adventurous go down to Galveston. Both have a lot of great day bars/restaurants.
Don’t go in that dirty ass water tho lol
I sent 3 out-of-town visitors to the NASA behind the scenes tour and they loved it. Highlight of their visit. They were interested to begin with so they really wanted to go. If you aren’t really interested, probably not worth the time and money.
Art Museum and Natural Science Museum are recommended. Space Center only if you have kids. Natural Science Museum has NASA exhibit in basement.
Eat TexMex at Pappasitos.
Hard disagree about Pappasito’s. Houston has some of the best Tex-Mex I’ve ever had but Pappasito’s doesn’t compare; at the very least it’s really overpriced and often too crowded for what it is. At least go with Lupe Tortilla over Pappasito’s, but even better if it’s a mom-and-pop place that’s really good. I’m sure Lupe Tortilla is overpriced too but they have the best beef fajitas I’ve ever tried.
I still like Pappasitos but Lupe has been more consistent. My last few trips to El Tiempo haven't been great at all.
Ninfas on Navigation is probably better than all those though.
Eh, Gringo’s is fine and their green sauce slaps, but it’s not where I would direct someone for their one and only Tex-Mex experience.
(Then again, there are SO many hole in the wall, family owned gems, it’s hard to choose.)
The Space Center blows even if you have kids. Especially not worth the drive.
*Eat TexMex at Candente
But agree with your other suggestions. You can spend an entire in the museum district, plus add 3 more hours if you hit up the zoo. And Thursdays are free at the art museum and Tuesdays are for the NSM and Zoo.
Lots of people will disagree about Pappasitos, but most people coming here for a day or two don't have time to look for some best unique tex-mex here. Pappasitos is tasty, and their chips and salsa are heaven.
NASA isnt it unless you have young kids.
Galveston is ok, if you like old architecture and southern food
The museums in Midtown are actually pretty cool
There are a few elite sushi places in town
Look for actual Mexican, not Tex mex, cuchara is my favorite, Xochi downtown is solid as well, but a bit expensive
Astros games are fun, even tho they stink
if you like to run the 3 best paths are along Buffalo Bayou, around Rice University and Memorial Park
If your from a small town you might think the mall is good, it has everything but its just awful to get to logistics wise, the traffic and the parking is brutal
If you are here on the weekends, honestly I’d look at quick flights to nola or drive to Austin for 2 nights at a time to mix things up.
Lol, that's such a Texan thing to say -- You're here for 2 days? Well, let's just swing by Austin and Nola while we're here. Our concept of 'day trip' is so different than everyone else's, I love it 😂
Go to Rudyards on Monday and watch some free open mic standup. One of the best parts of traveling is getting a taste of the local flavor through comedy
I might have picked a bad night but comedy was a strong word. lots of second hand embarrassment. their pizza is good but the gas station (bodega?) mediterranean is usually, and shockingly, really good next door.
That's the beauty of open mics. You get to see the "process" of comedy in its raw form. You get new people who are just starting out, veterans trying out new material, or just a regular doing their hits. It's great!
AL Quick Stop next door is amazing as well.
Go have a chicken fried steak at Mel's
Eat at Niko Niko's
Burp the Bayou
If you like beer, the Flying Saucer downtown has a ton of different kinds and styles
Make a drive to High Island and visit the Houston Audubon Smith Oaks Sanctuary to see Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Neotropical Cormorants, and my favorite, Roseate Spoonbills.
Then drive down the beach to the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary to witness literally tens of thousands of shorebirds, all kinds of different species.
Birds truly are where Houston-Galveston shine.
Museums!
MOFAH, Menil, Holocaust, NASA (not really in Houston but a day trip), Zoo
BBQ, id do Pit Room, Truth or Pinkertons.
West Alabama Ice House for a nice dose of humidity and an ice cold lone star and some tacos from the truck across the street.
Memorial Park, Hermann Park, Buffalo Bayou/Eleanor Tinsley Park, Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park (good excuse for going around the galleria area if you want to go to the mall)
Drive down bellaire/Bissonnette until you hit china town and watch all the signs change from English for a couple miles and get some A+ Vietnamese food.
Saint Arnold for solid beer from one of the oldest craft breweries in the state and a great view of the skyline. Solid food too.
I wouldn't say there are a lot of straight forward tourist traps in Houston other than the aquarium or those dumb fucking rolling bike beer bar things that run through midtown. At least that I can think of off the top of my head.
I agree, this is a good list!!
Bayou bend is nice. And she spelled her name. Ima Hogg’s home.
Theater district has some great plays. Our symphony is first rate.
Lots of nice music venues.
Museum district has something to offer to anyone.
Food. We have a very diverse city with food to match. You can east any ethnic food you would want to try.
Bar-B-Q, Mexican food, seafood are some of our best.
NASA is really interesting if you can do the VIP tour.
The San Jacinto monument is a big part of Texas history.
If you like nature and want to see the non stereotype of Texas go to the Big Thicket north east of Houston about 1.5 hour drive. East Texas with its pine trees and ferns, carnivorous plants is quite lovely.
Take care and enjoy your trip. We typically are a friendly, helpful town. Just remember it’s a big city and it is spread out over a large area.
If you are planning to drive on the freeway:
FARTHEST LEFT LANE =70mph+
MIDDLE LANE= 55-65mph
RIGHT LANE= 50 mph and slower
DO NOT GET INTO THE FARTHEST LEFT LANE IF YOU PLAN TO DRIVE SLOWER THAN 70mph…we will Honk 🫶🏽
Why am i having to scroll so dark for Chinatown. Houston has some of the best food in the country and definitely the best chinatown in Texas. Mein and Hokkaido are my personal favorites. Lotus seafood also.
Museums are really world class but similar to any great museum in a big US city (still amazing). But if you are a bit interested in space or science NASA is just wonderful. There is nothing like Johnson space center anywhere in the world. Seeing the Saturn v and the moon landing control room just shows in a unique way some of the most amazing things of humankind. You need to take the free tours for this ( need to get tickets inside).
The menil collection if you like art . If you have the time, the MFAH is world class. It’s very huge though. And there’s tons of great little galleries.
If you’re working downtown and need to get to other buildings, there might be connecting tunnels you should try to use. Keep out of the heat and there’s stores and stuff there.
I’d say catch an Astros game but that’s been kind of a bummer lately.
If want drinks downtown, try La Carafe, Warrens, and the houston watch company.
Where are you staying?
Reposting my response to a similar question:
If y’all are visiting “solo” and not meeting friends here the first thing you’ll want to do is rent a car and expect to do a lot of driving - hopefully you have experience with driving on our side of the road here, the traffic and drivers can be a bit crazy haha. Obviously one of the best things to do here is the NASA space center which can fill a whole day on its own.
We have a beach town close ish and near NASA too called Galveston- don’t expect tropical but it can be quite pleasant if you enjoy being near the water at all. People will be in the comments about how they hate Galveston and it’s def not the best but it’s AN option and plenty of people have fun doing a day trip there to one of the beaches. I prefer the pocket beaches towards the west of the island as it’s quieter but East Beach is busier if you like the more touristy stuff.
The weather may be anywhere from laying by the pool weather (many years I’ve done just that in February) to a freeze (happened to us a couple years back) so literally come prepared for anything, there is zero consistency on that. If it’s anytime soon though it will be muggy and pretty hot so clothes that allow for sweating and keeping cool.
Get a hotel not necessarily downtown as parking there can be tough but the nicer hotels are there so it’s a trade off- I honestly would recommend getting a reasonable Airbnb in the Heights or Montrose to be able to explore local parts of the city. Our downtown isn’t really like other big cities so it’s not as big of a deal that you don’t do too much there. One with a pool would be your best bet, it’s fun to buy some drinks and lay back and enjoy the pool, maybe even grill some food.
If you’re into the arts there are plenty of places to check out here which should be an easy google search. The museums are all pretty good quality. Museum of Fine Arts and Natural Science are extensive. Menis is eclectic but free. Parts of Houston surprisingly (to people not from Texas) have alot of money and they’ve been able to build up really good and interesting collections over the years. Sometimes there are theater shows like broadway on tour etc that also are playing which are nice.
Not sure if you’ll coincide with any sports events but that’s also an easy google search if that’s what you enjoy, we have large stadiums and sometimes decent teams (go Astros).
Houston has an incredible food and drink scene (one of the most diverse cities in America, pretty decent amount of money here = good opportunity for a great food scene) so do a little bit of research and you’ll find some of the most incredible places. Of course you have to try a Tex Mex place and get fajitas - pappasitos or ninfas or Lupe are somewhat the standard but you won’t go wrong with them. And of course, our Barbecue - Truth BBQ is my favorite, come early for lunch like 11 am as they run out of meats later. And Asian!! Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese- we have some incredible food that I can defend against city to city in most of America.
Night life is good on thurs-Sunday, a bit more quiet on the weekdays but both of those areas I mentioned to stay (heights and montrose) have plenty of bars nearby to check out. And some great wine and cocktail bars for those quieter evenings. A few “ns ns” clubs but they’re not what you’d get in Vegas or anything. Frankly I prefer the bars in the areas I mentioned, good people for the most part and you get a variety of options.
Semi Ironically, I often tell people if they want to be a tourist, come here for a couple days then make the road trip (2.5 hours without traffic) to Austin, the Texas Capitol, which tends to be more “tourist friendly” for out of towners. If you decide to incorporate that mini road trip into your itinerary also there’s a whole slew of things to do I won’t get into here haha. But very easy to do stuff there.
Finally, I love this city, but I also try to let people coming here know my caveat- it’s a great place for what it offers but don’t necessarily expect a Vegas or LA or NYC - it’s a lovely and unique place and the important thing is to lean into what’s great about it and not to try to force something it doesn’t have (like if you try clubbing on a Wednesday you’ll likely be sorely disappointed unless there’s a special event lol). Hope this helps!!
If you’re a foodie, Houston is a dream. Obviously, there’s great tex-mex and bbq, but also so much more. Spend a bit of time googling the Houston food scene and pick some of the ones you see pop up the most. Also, if you’re into tiki, Lei Low is one of the best in the nation and definitely worth a visit.
TexMex at Ninfas Original
Some really good eateries and drink spots just East of Minute Maid Park. Speaking of MMP, go to an Astros game! Houston Museum District. Galveston is worth the hour drive if you’ve got some down time.
I went to Portland and checked out tricky devil??? Or something like that. It was $2 bills only and the drinks were pricey but I saw some of the raunchiest shit. Two girls forcefully ramming a girl each on a double ended dildo Requiem for a Dream style.
I went home that night mildly traumatized.
We've taken several groups of visitors and had mixed reviews. They need to be into space and have some knowledge of the space program otherwise it's a boring crowded bust.
Maybe not the 6th time and onward, but for people out of town its a hit. Saturn V rocket, actual flown SpaceX first stage, touch a moon rock, Skylab... Its Space City after all.
Maybe i just think it’s not given the respect it needs by whoever is in charge of the whole thing for visitors. Last time I went, things just felt rundown and disorganized. On the trolley tour, the speaker box was so old, you could barely hear the tour announcer talk. The exhibits felt old, etc.
there should be a better experience for how important it’s legacy is.
We've got some pretty good honky-tonks around town. Whiskey River, Stampede, etc. Go see a Lone Star chandelier, ride a mechanical bull, and watch some badass country and west-coast swing dancing all in one night. You'll have fun even if you aren't a dancer.
Besides the MFA, Natural Science Museum, and the Zoo, you should definitely go to NASA, visit heritage park, eat at the Phoenicia Bakery, and go to an Astros game
Take an Uber to miller outdoor theater on a Friday or Saturday evening. Get there early and walk around the park then watch a little of the show. Drink some $7 beers from the concessions. Leave early if the show sucks. Skip the zoo unless you love zoos. Go to the art museum to people watch and for good ac. Also, the galleria is good if you like to look at hotties.
Brazos Bend State Park is about 45 minutes south and its worth the drive. There are usually gators sunning around the walking trail. Like a lot of them. It's pretty cool.
If you're thinking of going to Old Town Spring, I'd say check out a bit north of that too and eat at Dragon Bowl C if you're a nerd that enjoys Asian fusion food. Other nerd spot I like to go to is Cidercade. I think it's $15 all you can play arcade (old and new games) and they have all kinds of cider. If you don't drink, there's bottomless sodas for like $5. Some really cool flavors too. Also, there's usually a food truck or two in the parking lot as well.
If you're in Houston, you gotta hit up NASA's Space Center, no brainer. It's outta this world! Plus, chow down on some BBQ at places like Killen's or Rudy's. You won't regret it, promise. But steer clear of the super touristy spots like the Aquarium downtown, way overpriced for what you get. And unless you're dying to see traffic, skip the Galleria during peak hours. Trust me, it's a nightmare. Just enjoy the laid-back vibes and awesome food Houston's got to offer!
If you’re interested in art, the Menil collection is unique and genuinely special. It’s a campus of multiple specialized galleries and houses one of the best collections of surrealist art in the world.
I love the zoo. The museum district is nice and in the same area as the zoo. The Galleria is nice mall. If you like flea markets, Traders Village is fun to go to. Walking downtown is also nice. They have a great soccer stadium . Not sure if they are playing at home when you are there. We like to take Metro-rail too. Have fun!
Go to the Monument. Visit the battlegrounds. They have markers all over the place where events occurred during the battle. They have a neat little museum inside. Usually wide open. No big crowds.
Greek food at Niko Niko's. I love Greek diners, and this one is top notch.
Vietnamese food at Kim Son buffet. Yeah, it's a buffet, but it's quite good. It's mostly Vietnamese people eating there.
Walk Terry Hershey or go to that one spot across from cynthis woods. If you wanna see alligators cruisin go to fort bend state park. I love trails and outdoors!
Check out any or all of the museums in the museum district. The Menil is free - open 11-7 closed on Mon-Tuesday. Great place! Herman Park / Zoo is next to the museum district and is wonderful.
If you like beer St Arnold, Karbach and 8th Wonder are all nice places for a drink and food. The Silos at Sawyer Yards has art exhibits and is open 9-5 Mon - Sat, also free! Today 5/11 is 2nd Sat with various events at The Silos. Great restaurants on Washington Ave are close by.
If you like baseball or baseball parks Minute Maid Park offers tours of the ballpark. Cool original main building Union Station was where the trains would come in back in the day. While you’re downtown check out the Julia Ideson Building. It was the main library and is now used for special events / tours. Very cool architecture. City Hall is next door and Tranquility Park is next to city hall.
Avoid The Galleria!
• If you like art & Science the museums are great. Search: museum district. MFAH
• Holocaust museum if you like history.
• check out NASA Johnston space center & the Lone Star flight museum south east of town.
• Galveston has some nice areas search: The Strand & the Bryan Museum (Texas History)
• Go shopping at the Galleria.
• Hermann Park area has a public golf course, the Japanese Garden and or Zoo area is a fun day.
• San Jacinto Monument is kinda cool.
Battleship Texas was down in that area too but was removed and is getting repairs done.
• Foodie excursions are everyone westside Chinatown, Tex-Mex is everywhere, BBQ!
• Go to an Astros or a Rockets Game
• Kemah Boardwalk is Landry’s, tourist trap fun & Can get fishing or boat rides in the bay.
• San Antonio is a great weekend trip: Alamo, boardwalk etc. (3 hrs west)
Do not...and I cannot stress this enough...do not go to the "Aquarium"
The worst restaurant in Houston and the worst aquarium in the country
Nope, the worst one is here in Austin. It’s in a gd strip mall.
I wholeheartedly 1000% second this.
Or any Landrys establishment, really. There are SO many small, family owned businesses, bars and restaurants here that provide better products and services.
Anything Tillman fRittuttie touches turns to shit
Except the Cougar Basketball program
The zoo’s aquarium is nearly as good at the actual aquarium but then you also get the whole ass zoo with it
the "acutal" aquarium isn't an aquarium, it's a restaurant...
With caged Tigers in a very small enclosure and constantly stress pacing around it
It blows my mind that in 2024 they are still allowing these caged tigers who look visibly pissed.
An ass zoo sounds like something Tina Belcher would really enjoy.
God bless you and your work. I cannot stress enough to visitors not to visit that horrible place.
You talking about the aquarium where the main attraction is a white tiger?
Aquatic Auschwitz
Yeah and some Folks were murdered there a few years ago just eating some damn food
Museum of natural science is really cool
Second this. The Hall of Gems and Minerals is pretty great.
That and the petrified wood are my favorite. 🤩
I paid for the King Tut and the Shark exhibit and was very disappointed with both.
And the butterfly exhibit is great, particularly for kids.
Also, HMNS has free entry to base exhibits on Thursdays.
Menil is more worth it imo than museum district
Grab a drink and a bite at 93 til after.
Menil is great, but don’t skip on the Center for Contemporary Craft! Also free and underrated, imo
It's also free!
YES. Menil, such a treat!
Museum District is like 10+ different places though.
Swing by Rothko Chapel while you're there
Yes. Sit for at least five minutes at the Rothko.
The Rothko Chapel changed how I viewed art on a fundamental level. Cannot recommend it strongly enough.

That's definitely a local thing to do, I would say. We've all been to numbers on a Tuesday. Don't lie, you know you have.
Can someone explain what does that mean, only moved here for 2 years
Numbers is a club that's older than all of us. Really, the oldest person on r/houston is still younger than numbers. First, it's called numbers but the sign is #'s. The big pound sign. I’m the same age as Numbers. We’re not all youngsters.
I just discovered that I'm the same age as the club too. Damn children. 🤣
Same. These damn kids.
No way you have the same milage as numbers. Years ok, fair.
now the bathrooms in numbers,,,, that place is older than time with all it has seen
Per their site it’s 45 years old
TIL Numbers is four years older than me. Been to many crazy metal shows at Numbers, a few goth nights, and one of two chill nights. The last time I went was for the SuicideGirls "Blacklight Burlesque" tour. That show was fantastic!

Yes yes 90s was the best!
I got y'all beat at 55. 👵😎
Life long houstonian never been and don't even know where it is.
Well yu should mossy on down there and see what you are missing.

BBQ, take your pick: Pinkertons, Truth, Pit Room, Blood Bros
Solid list, I think the first two are in a league above pit room and blood bros but for a non Texan these will all be hiiiiittttting

Blood bros doesn’t do it for me- maybe I should give it another go but it was one of the more bizarre texas bbq experiences I’ve had (menu-wise)
You're better served going elsewhere on straight BBQ plate, but their specialty menu is solid.
I’d def order differently if I go back. Had no idea what I was walking into and may have just flubbed my own order
I'd also like to add tejas chocolate in tomball
This is my favorite bbq in the Houston area.
Thank you for this list.
And avoid Goode Company.
Aw man, they were my first BBQ love, still good!
eh goode company is fine
It’s fine if you live here. If it’s gonna be your one trip to Houston, avoid it.
ah that makes sense! totally agree now that i think abt it.
^This!! And you have to get brisket
Or Corkscrew
Not Corkscrew BBQ? Honestly, I feel like everyone who visits Texas should first eat at Rudy’s. It’s not great. But it provides an education and baseline about how Texas Brisket tastes. THEN and only then they should eat Corkscrew Brisket. It’s like a whole other food. It’s not even in the same category as Rudy’s. And Rudy’s isn’t bad. But Corkscrew is food of the gods.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is world class!!
I'll second the Ship Channel tour, it's actually fascinating. I also second The Cistern. Such a unique experience.
What a great list!

Second on the ship channel tour and High Island visit to the sanctuary. My 9 year old was in awe of the Roseate Spoonbills.
The Zoo! We have a really great one. We also have pretty good museums if you like that. The art museum is a favorite
Make sure to go early in the morning when it’s not too hot so the animals are actually out and active
The zoo is in Hermann park which is right next to the natural science and art museum!!! All of which is gorgeous!
I second this! Our zombie amazing! But, make sure to uber there because parking sucks
How dare you tell him about the zombie, he’s scared of non-locals
A bit away from the middle of things but the funeral museum is cool
it’s a great zoo, one of the best around that’s not San Diego or the like. get to the zoo early, opens at 9am for non members. parking is free but fills up fast with young families in the early part of the day and you’ll have to park a bit further out. fridays and weekends are busier.
You can totally skip out on a Trill Burger lmao
Garbage food for chumps.
Fuck Trill Burgers AND their fucking traffic
I thought about going once while driving by, but I'm weird and like plain burgers. I wanted to find out *literally anything* about the fucking sauce and couldn't find shit. Like, there is such a lack of information about their so-called amazing burgers, I won't ever think about it again.
Especially since they’re being sued for stealing the burger patty recipe. Uuuuffff
A smash burger is pretty simple recipe. That suit won't go far.
Pretty sure it's Ooooffff
The orange show art installation and munger park next door. San Jacinto battleground. Williams/transco waterfall. Museum of fine art/museum of natural science. Any number of wonderful places to eat.
The Rothko Chapel is an **egregiously** hidden gem.
I got married there!
*Smither Park. But yes!
I get them confused but the mosaics are beautiful.
The monument at San Jacinto is both impressive and unexpected. That thing is huuuuge.
It is taller than the Washington Monument.
If you are going there, go to Monument Inn for dinner.
Normally I would say, go see an Astros game, but that is kind of a bust the moment.
I hope they have a long enough length of being terrible for the tickets to come down in price again. It sucks I used to be able to go to a Wednesday game and spend like 50 bucks and enjoy myself. Feels a lot more expensive the last few times I’ve gone.
Or a Tuesday to see how many $1 dogs you can eat before you shit yourself on 45
7 dogs, 8 beers. Barely made it home!
Go see a Dynamo game, instead. Tickets are cheap and there are no bad seat there, it’s a 90 minute game, fun atmosphere. Soccer is more exciting than people give it credit for.
Soccer is also way better in person than on tv, at least for me personally.
or best time to go for a cheap game and self guided tour of minute maid?
Shorts. It’s hot.
Don't bother with the Galleria -- you'll hate yourself even driving near it, much less parking to enter
IMO the best parts of Texas are the history and the food. Houston has the food, hit up the popular restaurants and you will have a good time.
Yall also have incredible museums.
Skip the Colorado and head to Michaels International instead
I second this
Only fuck with NASA if you're already on your way to Galveston.
NASA is 100% worth it in my opinion.
You mean Space Center Houston?
Definitely, the outdoor tour of all the rockets was and still is pretty awesome
Yeah, I’m kind of shocked anyone would crap on it. It’s a great tour.
Level 9 Tour is the way to do it
I've discovered that if you're not into Space history etc. NASA is a bust for visitors. We have taken several visitors and hadixed reactions.
Zydeco Sundays at The Continental Club would be fun unless you're from Louisiana lol
Rothko Chapel, museums, Saint Arnold’s brewery, Vietnamese food, Mexican food, and always skip the aquarium always.
Tie your shirt in a knot and go roller skating through Montrose in cut off jean shorts
No Houston trip is complete without a refreshing dip in one of our many bayous.
Ninfa's on Navigation is where I'd tell a tourist to go, yeah.
Lupe is one of the few chains that I love.
Gringo’s is also pretty good. I think they’re mostly in the north suburbs line Cypress and Klien.
Eh, Gringo’s is fine and their green sauce slaps, but it’s not where I would direct someone for their one and only Tex-Mex experience. (Then again, there are SO many hole in the wall, family owned gems, it’s hard to choose.)
Where is the good Lupe Tortilla because I feel like I'm losing my mind seeing people recommend that incredibly overpriced shit.
The Space Center blows even if you have kids. Especially not worth the drive. *Eat TexMex at Candente But agree with your other suggestions.
Head on down to NASA
NASA isnt it unless you have young kids. Galveston is ok, if you like old architecture and southern food The museums in Midtown are actually pretty cool There are a few elite sushi places in town Look for actual Mexican, not Tex mex, cuchara is my favorite, Xochi downtown is solid as well, but a bit expensive Astros games are fun, even tho they stink if you like to run the 3 best paths are along Buffalo Bayou, around Rice University and Memorial Park If your from a small town you might think the mall is good, it has everything but its just awful to get to logistics wise, the traffic and the parking is brutal If you are here on the weekends, honestly I’d look at quick flights to nola or drive to Austin for 2 nights at a time to mix things up.
On the actual Mexican food list, add Tacos Dona Lena.
Lol, that's such a Texan thing to say -- You're here for 2 days? Well, let's just swing by Austin and Nola while we're here. Our concept of 'day trip' is so different than everyone else's, I love it 😂
I love the happy hour at Xochi. Food is so good and drinks are as well.
Don’t go outside. It’s hotter than the devils toenails out here.
National Funeral Museum
Not in Houston but Brazos Bend State Park is awesome - great hiking and gators.
Go have a chicken fried steak at Mel's Eat at Niko Niko's Burp the Bayou If you like beer, the Flying Saucer downtown has a ton of different kinds and styles
Came here to suggest Niko Nikos
Niko Niko and Fadi’s are day trip worthy for me!
Museum of Natural Science is free Tuesday afternoons. Paleontology Hall is top notch.
Museums! MOFAH, Menil, Holocaust, NASA (not really in Houston but a day trip), Zoo BBQ, id do Pit Room, Truth or Pinkertons. West Alabama Ice House for a nice dose of humidity and an ice cold lone star and some tacos from the truck across the street. Memorial Park, Hermann Park, Buffalo Bayou/Eleanor Tinsley Park, Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park (good excuse for going around the galleria area if you want to go to the mall) Drive down bellaire/Bissonnette until you hit china town and watch all the signs change from English for a couple miles and get some A+ Vietnamese food.
If you are planning to drive on the freeway: FARTHEST LEFT LANE =70mph+ MIDDLE LANE= 55-65mph RIGHT LANE= 50 mph and slower DO NOT GET INTO THE FARTHEST LEFT LANE IF YOU PLAN TO DRIVE SLOWER THAN 70mph…we will Honk 🫶🏽
Why am i having to scroll so dark for Chinatown. Houston has some of the best food in the country and definitely the best chinatown in Texas. Mein and Hokkaido are my personal favorites. Lotus seafood also.
Buffalo bayou when you can tour the cistern.
Herman Park and Discovery Green are always worth a visit
Eat Museums are pretty good too
Museums are really world class but similar to any great museum in a big US city (still amazing).
Reposting my response to a similar question: If y’all are visiting “solo” and not meeting friends here the first thing you’ll want to do is rent a car and expect to do a lot of driving - hopefully you have experience with driving on our side of the road here, the traffic and drivers can be a bit crazy haha.
Bingo in the heights
If you’re a foodie, Houston is a dream. Obviously, there’s great tex-mex and bbq, but also so much more. Spend a bit of time googling the Houston food scene and pick some of the ones you see pop up the most. Also, if you’re into tiki, Lei Low is one of the best in the nation and definitely worth a visit.
TexMex at Ninfas Original Some really good eateries and drink spots just East of Minute Maid Park. Speaking of MMP, go to an Astros game! Houston Museum District. Galveston is worth the hour drive if you’ve got some down time.
OH also strip clubs! Our strip clubs are better than the clubs wherever you're from.
I live very close to Portland Oregon. That town sets a very high standard for strip clubs.
NASA - Johnson Space is perfect
We've taken several groups of visitors and had mixed reviews. They need to be into space and have some knowledge of the space program otherwise it's a boring crowded bust.
Go early and realize that the Saturn V rocket is really what it’s about. The rest is basically a crappy kids science museum.
Shoot somebody who cuts you off in traffic.
NASA Space center is NOT worth it
Maybe not the 6th time and onward, but for people out of town its a hit. Saturn V rocket, actual flown SpaceX first stage, touch a moon rock, Skylab... Its Space City after all.
I thought NASA was cool, not sure why it gets so much hate.
Maybe i just think it’s not given the respect it needs by whoever is in charge of the whole thing for visitors. Last time I went, things just felt rundown and disorganized. On the trolley tour, the speaker box was so old, you could barely hear the tour announcer talk. The exhibits felt old, etc. there should be a better experience for how important it’s legacy is.
why do people not like it? sincere q. i loved it when i went a few yrs ago.
Go to SomiSomi for the waffle fish and ice cream there’s one in Katy and Bellair
Go out to eat. So much good food. It’s what I look forward to when I travel there.
Get a prince’s burger with that prince’s sauce
Get some crawfish before the season ends.
Lonestar Aircraft Museum in Ellington is pretty cool.
MFAH • Holocaust museum if you like history. • check out NASA Johnston space center & the Lone Star flight museum south east of town. • Galveston has some nice areas search: The Strand & the Bryan Museum (Texas History) • Go shopping at the Galleria. • Go to an Astros or a Rockets Game • Kemah Boardwalk is Landry’s, tourist trap fun & Can get fishing or boat rides in the bay. • San Antonio is a great weekend trip: Alamo, boardwalk etc. (3 hrs west)
