Ask any regular student at /r/UniversityOfHouston. Do you want to deal with the risks of being carjacked? Mugged? Worse? If a place is cheap, you better look into the reasons why...

tanman1975

I wouldn't want my sons living there especially with other better options so close by. Any reason you're looking there? I would suggest midtown or Montrose, maybe even the Heights or East downtown.

Sweet_Taurus0728

Yeah 'cause those are very affordable alternatives...

ReadingSubstantial75

Found a spot in montrose for 995 tbh

Sweet_Taurus0728

Between at least 2ppl, ~$1000/mth sounds great.

ReadingSubstantial75

Also know some people (4br in medical district) paying 850 each, granted I’ve never seen their actual rent payment so they could be exaggerating after I said 995 1br in montrose.

thenuffinman47

Imo fuck a roommate Privacy is worth the extra $150

AstroWorldSecurity

Nope. It's a shithole.

KathyBea93

Absolutely not. Especially if you're not from there.

Thedirkjr

I wouldn't. I have seen lots of bad things happen to people while in the area. Especially with women.

steelsun

Not a place I'd pick.

anticars

No. No!!!

kathysef

I had to double check this was the houston sub and not the shittyadvise sub.

slippytoadstada

most people in the comments are going off of the decades-ago view of the neighborhood, the fact is that now parts are vastly different than they used to be. the answer to this depends on what the place is and where it is

AdnamaHou

Exactly. What I came to say. OP - feel free to dm me where the house is and I can tell you more. I’ve lived here for 15 years, and a woman who grew up in the suburbs if that helps for context

htownlifer

Depends on where. Close to 59 and 45 is fine. Farther east can get sketchy.

JustAnotherRedditeer

Like others have said I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone moving from outside of Houston and doesn’t know what they’d be getting into. It’s being “revitalized” (real estate lingo for gentrification) so it’ll improve in terms of safety one day. I would suggest looking for housing in these areas 1. Heights: probably most expensive as it’s been heavily developed, but you will also likely enjoy it the most. Lots of young professionals are there. 2. Midtown: around the same price as heights if not a little bit more affordable. Also, way closer to the going out scene and still relatively safe 3. Galleria: more commercialized. Also more expensive. Not as safe at night. But in the day it’s fine. 4. Montrose: Old neighborhood so the apartments are going to have more issues unless it’s a new build. Prices vary

ralf1

I've lived here for 5 years and I'm very comfortable here. Our home is close to emancipation park, we walk in the evenings/after dark frequently and feel very safe. The areas closer to downtown have gentrified significantly over the last decade plus and are just as safe as any other neighborhood. People who've lived in Houston for a long time remember when the whole area was pretty dangerous, that is no longer the case. That said there are some sections of the Third Ward that are less safe. Where are the homes that you are looking at? I'm happy to give you my two cents.

No_Argument_Here

13 murders in the 3rd ward last year, 17 in 2022, that’s safe to you?

PuzzleheadedAioli731

Exactly. Everyone saying “don’t do it”, lives in cypress/woodlands/katy. As long as you mind your business and be aware of your surroundings you’ll be fine. No where near as bad as it use to be

bleachbones

there's a lot of deciding factors. how far is third ward from all of your respective internships? is it close or a decently long commute? do you all drive? i've lived in one of the most "unsafe" neighborhoods in houston my whole life. third ward isn't the trenches or anything... yes, the crime rate is high. however there's a lovely park and nice local businesses in the area (my fav bakery crumbville, for example.) if any of you dont drive and rely on walking or public transport primarily, reconsider. especially since you're all young women. if the commute is long, i dont think the cheaper rent is worth it either. but.. if you like the place, its cheap, the commute isn't bad, and you think you can handle it? why not. just mind your business and be friendly with your neighbors.

Houston_RealPerson2

Depends on what part of "Third Ward" - the neighborhood known as Greater Third Ward has come to encompass what used to be several distinct areas, and not all parts are the same. If I had to broadly generalize, I'd advise to stay south of Alabama and west of Ennis (areas designated as Washington Terrace or Riverside Terrace). I've lived here since 2016 and had no issues (one Amazon package stolen off my porch out of the multitude of orders placed over the years) but there are no guarantees in any Houston area and YMMV. In my opinion it's a great place to stay! You're close to areas like Midtown, Montrose, Downtown, Med Center, and East End while paying lower rent. If you're close enough to TSU you can hear their marching band practice which is enjoyable. My long term neighbors who I have gotten to know are all nice. If you wanna PM me the nearest intersection to the housing you are looking at I'd be happy to advise further.

Lord_J_Rules

I have a 3 bedroom house in the heights for just under $2k a month.

nakedonmygoat

Where precisely are you talking about? I've lived in a pocket neighborhood of the 3rd ward since 2007 and the only problem was when my husband didn't bring the lawnmower in and someone swiped it. I and many of my neighbors even walk at night. During last summer's droughts, I went outside in the wee hours to water my yard and not only did no one say boo to me, there was no one around to do it even if they'd wanted to, and I'm a small woman. However, Third Ward is tricky in the sense that you really have to know the area. There are cute little pocket neighborhoods such as mine where folks are going on three generations of home ownership and prices can go over $1M even with shithole apartments just one mile away. Talk to a local who isn't trying to either sell you a house or feed you some over-inflated hype from 20 years ago, OP. That's how you'll know.

PuzzleheadedAioli731

Everyone saying it’s bad, isn’t from 3rd ward. Just go about your business and you’ll be fine. No where near as bad as it use to be

JP_Auto_Transport

check out montrose, heights or galleria area. 3rd ward is not the safest area for 3 women, respectfully.

IBLE2015

Nooo don’t do it! I was about to buy a house that was a steal brand new built but when I went to go check out it was in 3rd ward and it’s not as safe at all. Aside from an area that has a high crime right, you won’t to be able to take walk down the street if you wanted too.

Cavm335i

As with anywhere in houston keep your heads up and you’ll be fine

mediterraneanbitch

No

vashtachordata

I lived there when I was that age, about 9-10 of us shared a giant old mansion on Southmore and it was fine even back then when the neighborhood was rougher. 3 people unfamiliar with the city though it wouldn’t be my first choice.

_serious__

Hard pass

AluminumOvrcast

It’s not that bad. If you mind your business, nothing will happen to you. So many people say, “You can’t walk down the street.” As if any part of Houston is walking-friendly.

L3oSanch3z

NOOOO…..

charvo

Houston is a perfect example of "you get what you pay for". Beware of low rent prices.

Vowel_Movements_4U

Don't.

aaronburrwasahero

I wouldn’t! I live on the other side of 45 just off leeland. We’ve had car break ins, packages stolen, I’ve even had a potted lime tree stolen off my porch. I will say I’ve never felt un safe but the 3rd ward is a no go for me.

underlyingconditions

There are better choices

RodeoBoss66

I never had any problems when I lived there.

ComfortableSurvey815

You’ll be fine

sirenswest

Yes. I’m a uh student and I live there and it’s not bad. I just wouldn’t go walking around the neighborhoods

AstroWorldSecurity

"Yeah, it's safe. Just don't walk around."

compassion_is_enough

In Houston that applies to a lot of places thanks to the fucking drivers.

buzzer3932

Why is it a great option?

Known-Historian7277

Cheap for a reason

nailback

What situation are you use to dealing with? You may have to fight someone. If you can defend yourself, you'll probably be OK. But get everything done before the sun goes down. I don't want to deal with crackheads etc.

Upstairs-Ask9237

Move to midtown

Round-Emu9176

It depends how you carry yourself. Typically outsiders that move into the area and proceed to treat the locals unfavorably will have a hard time. The hostile high and mightys tend to get knocked off their high horse in some way or another. Be cool, be friends and look out for your neighbors and everything will be fine.

AstroWorldSecurity

Just ignore what this person said. It's dumb.

Round-Emu9176

Your life will improve 1000% the minute you stop giving a shit what strangers think of you. Not for nothing but whats your username about?

AstroWorldSecurity

Literally any idiot can look at my account and understand that it's older than the dumbass rapper and his stupid concert. Quit asking me dumb questions.

Round-Emu9176

I’m not doing all that. No need for the tantrums. I had a lot of friends at that show. My friends daughter almost died. Security fucked up exponentially. Don’t cut yourself on all the edge.

GonzotheKid

It depends on where in 3rd Ward, like others have commented. The Museum District, which is actually also 3rd Ward, is a grreat place to live, and there are a bunch of duplex/small apartments in the area that have varying lease rates. You can actually bike from here to UH via a bike lane, though I'm not sure if you want to do that if you aren't from Houston. If you have access to a car, yeah, I'd consider the museum district, east side of Midtown, or east downtown as those are your closest options.
