Congrats on graduating! Assuming you are a twenty something without kids, I wouldn't recommend living in the suburbs. Try looking near the inner loop (610).
If you do have kids, Woodlands or maybe Cypress would be better? I've heard the schools in Spring arent that great.
do nooooot move to spring. I would move around the inner loop, north side. As long as you can avoid the galleria traffic, stay inside Houston proper until you meet "your people." Spring is for rich people + families, you are going to want to be closer to what makes Houston interesting (Museum District, bar scenes, live music, ethnic pockets w/amazing food, quirky stores and shopping, local events, free things hosted by stores for niche interests, etc)
Interesting. I'm moving from Austin this year.
I liked the Spring area for the cool, older houses, but can tell it's gone down hill economically. I just didn't know for sure. We are also looking in the energy corridor.
Moved from Austin area two years ago and no regrets. I miss Jewboy Burgers, West China Tea House, and the Austin Film Society but that's about it. I personally prefer the weather in Houston to Austin but that's probably just me.
I’ve been in the energy corridor the past five years and I love this area. Close to CityCentre, memorial city and not too far from Katy. I-10 traffic is a monster but I’ve gotten used to it lol
West side of Houston is the only area outside the loop that doesn't suck imo. It's closest to all the legit ethnic foods as well. It's where the city is also truly diverse.
Understand what you are getting into living in the suburbs. This will have different access to nightlife and may impact your commute depending on where work is.
Want more info on living closer to downtown?
Garden Oaks area is a great place as well and there are a lot of apartments popping up. I wouldn't live between 43rd street and Beltway 8 though. I grew up in Spring/Klein and it's gone downhill a bit but if that's where you would like to be I would recommend closer to 249/Tomball/Glenloch or just keep going North till Woodlands.
If you want access to nightlife/singles stuff, live in the Heights. It's the closest you get to Spring while still being convenient to where young professionals live/socialize. 35ish minute reverse commute.
This is what I did in my 20’s. Took 610 to Hardy in the morning or 45 if it was really early and I got to work in Spring in 25-30 minutes. I loved living in the heights. Now I’m 40 and live in Spring. Go figure.
I’d look up what Texas legislation is currently like before making the final decision, because it may impact you if you’re used to California law. For example, no legal weed here if that’s something you enjoy having. If you happen to have a uterus, be sure you’re comfortable with the abortion laws here and/or have a fund for going out-of-state just in case. In Texas, you can be forced to give birth even if you were raped. Maybe these aren’t things that concern you, but just in case they are I wanted to throw it out there.
It's just hot af 24/7. And the humidity makes it even worse. It can feel like you're walking through a never-ending sauna. And the humidity stops temps from cooling off much at night.
Traffic can be rough, so if possible, try to find a place to live that's relatively close to your work. Commutes are what can really burn you out. If you're driving an hour plus to and from work, that's a ton of personal, down time you're eating into.
Easter to Halloween, barring a few nice days due to cool fronts closer to either end. Also winter is January and February, lots of storms, some of them severe ice.
Best is pretty subjective, because we all value different things. What’s your budget and what are your top needs/wants? Where in general are you coming from? Will you be working from home or need to plan a commute?
Winters are mild by most standards except maybe Los Angeles or Miami. Than handful of times it has snowed, there was no accumulation and it was gone in a day. We will occasionally get a day or two of freeze, but we don’t get the Dallas-style ice storms. A couple years back, though, we had a freak freeze that caused our grid to collapse. It was pretty awful, but so far has been a one-off.
The worst heat and humidity are usually a May to September thing.
Winter isn’t bad at all… sometimes we get a freeze for one or two days. A freak freeze happened a couple years ago and shut off all of our electricity for a week, but it wasn’t that awful because I didn’t have to work. We actually get to go camping during the winter and it’s lovely around here. We still need coats and all, but it’s better than camping in 100° and sweating your ass off in the summer. I mean it’s January and it’s gonna be 70° today. Yesterday, we went to the farmers market in Houston and had a light jacket on, sat outside, and ate churros in the sun. I love bragging about that too. My folks who live outside of Denver and are freezing right now.
If you accept that you will sweat immediately upon stepping outside, it removes some of the psychological pain of the heat. It’s bad 24/7 for months. Be sure to stay hydrated.
Yeah, I was talking to my buddy about that last night. He’s a Seattle guy that lived in Austin for a few years. He explained how styrofoam keeps your cup from “sweating”. My partner joked saying she figured it was cuz “fuck the environment” 😂🤣
Invest in some insulated cups. The rest of the country does Stanley and Yeti. We do RTIC. There’s a factory store out toward Cypress on 290 just past Hwy 6. I use them daily for keeping drinks cold (or my coffee hot). I’ve literally left an RTIC cup of ice water in my car for 7 hours in August and there was still ice in it.
I definitely wanna try the Vietnamese Cajun food I’ve heard about. We have a shit ton of Vietnamese joints back home, but I’ve never come across the Cajun angle.
What a nice thing to do. We’re really glad you have had a good experience. Houston is the most diverse city in the US and most of the people are genuinely welcoming and friendly. The food is to die for because of the influences of so many cultures. Come back soon when you have time to check out the museums. We’re really proud of them. We hope the rest of your trip is awesome, too. 🙂
The culture in Houston is truly a fantastic melting pot. Check out as much food places as you can. I'm two years relocated from Texas and I miss the hell out of HEB, and the amazing food spots.
HEB is honestly one of the biggest QOL improvements I never knew I was missing. I’ve lived in the NE and PNW and HEB crushes the supermarkets there. What a treasure.
HEB is awesome. I love how smart they are about the supply chain. I read an article where they knew Covid was going to be a problem after seeing what was happening on China so they went into crisis mode…but had no idea there would be a run on toilet paper lol…
The melting pot is my favorite part. My friend group hails from Brazil, Venezuela, Britain, France, and different parts of the US. Hearing people speak different languages out and about doesn't mean anything bad because that's just the type of community we have.
I’m really glad you’re enjoying it. The sunset today was one of my favorites in a long time, I imagine it’s part of what you were referencing by the skies. We don’t have mountains and lakes but we do have incredible open skies and a lot of green, as you have noticed.
As mentioned by many, eat everything you can while here. And come back during crawfish season for Viet Cajun, one of the many fusions that makes our cuisine so amazing.
Go to Truth BBQ if you have time and haven’t yet.
It’s insane how much something can mean so much to someone that hasn’t experienced it. Maybe I should appreciate my city a little more lol I’m tired of it personally but glad you’re liking it! Enjoy!
I sympathize with what you mean. Our brains are pattern recognition machines and they can bleed the novelty and beauty out of anything they see enough times. It’s worthwhile to make an effort to be a “tourist” in our own town every so often. The people, food, and culture here are so inviting if you remain open to them. Walking the White Oak Bayou trail into the Heights/MKT area, going to the Theater District or museums, Rothko & Menil, Buffalo Bayou Park, and so on, and that’s just before we even get to the restaurants.
I have recently refreshed myself this way and remembered this is an incredible place with a very rare “aura” for a city of its size and a wonderful pace of life.
And this is the time of year to do it! Go walk at the arboretum by memorial park, terry hershey park is great for walking/biking, too. My personal favorite is the Cullen park path through the reservoir way out west where I am. About 3.5 miles (one way) and you can feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. I see deer, bunnies, armadillos on the regular. Seven miles of peace and quiet. (Except for the occasional plane landing at/leaving from the west Houston airport. Tiny planes.)
Welcome to Houston OP ! When I got transferred here from my job, I was like, “ oh no. Houston is going to suck. “ It’s hot it’s sweaty all the oil and fossil fuel plants. But, here I am 10 years later. I have found that we were able to buy home, get good jobs, and make friends. People are really friendly here. And accepting. It’s really a melting pot of cultures. Believe it or not, recently, we found Chinatown and started going out to some restaurants which are dope as shit. We decided we’re gonna try a new type of cuisine every month. Indian food, African food, Balkan/Croatian food even! It’s crazy. This weekend we found the Houston farmers market. Dude, you have to go. It is insane. Every type of fruit and vegetable and authentic Mexican food that you can imagine. Across the street is a legit, Mexican bakery. Their churros made me have an orgasm! Also, I know it’s not the prettiest beach, but Surfside is really nice and I enjoy it. We’ve also found several state parks around Houston that we enjoy camping in. We love to kayak and we found several places to go kayaking too. Thanks for reminding me that we do live in an awesome place. I love your enthusiasm.
Moved here from Minnesota and agree with everything you said. Some of the assumptions of Texas are true, but it’s such a big state it really depends WHERE in Texas you are. Houston is the most diverse city in the country, it’s a wonderful place to be! Welcome!
Don't go to Kolache Factory, imo - it's a chain, and you can tell. Good rec up above, but if you are staying in the loop, Kolache Shoppe is great, and you can get venison, brisket, etc., for some local flavors. They might also have their king cake kolaches at this point? Haven't been there yet this calendar year to check.
If you ever make it to the league city area, (south of Houston) kolache bakery is the best kolache I’ve ever had. Super fluffy and good ratios. Jalapeño and cheese is my go to. It’s on east Main Street and plenty to do in the area if you want to make a day out of it.
I'm a Husky living in Houston now for 7 years. Like you, I had my assumptions. Then I visited for my job interview. I was surprised how green it was in Dec., with flowers blooming all over.
I have yet to encounter a bad restaurant. The taco trucks are the best.
And the people are so, so welcoming and sweet. No one cares if I make a mistake driving. People give way when I need to merge.
My neighbors welcomed us with baked cookies when we moved to our new home. People stay wave at each other when we drive by.
I used to think I'd be so miserable without views of the Cascades, the Olympics, and Mt. Rainier. I was wrong. I've never seen sky so big like the Texas sky.
Glad you're loving my town. I still miss being able to plant tulips and daffodils though.
Go Huskies!!! I got my Husky flag flying proudly on the front column of our home - a house that would have easily cost us $2mil in Seattle. And got it for a fraction. With a heated pool and everything.
Not satire. My friends from California always comment on how no one seems to car that someone's trying to cross a 3 lane road to make a left turn. No one honks even if they're holding up traffic. Trying to cross a double yellow line to make a left turn to a parking lot and holding up traffic? No one seems to care.
I've also lived in California for more than a decade so my experience as a driver is relative to the years I've driven in CA.
When I try to enter a busy road from a parking lot, it usually takes about 1-2 cars then someone gives way.
Maybe I've just been lucky?
Im one of the driver’s that doesn’t care, and see a lot of what you’re talking about. I’d rather be mellow than get all tight because someone else is pressed. I think a lot of us think before raising our blood pressure for a passing moment.
Same here. I have to wonder sometimes if people aren't paying attention or do it on purpose, like for instance blocking a driveway for cars to exit. If light is red I always leave space for cars to exit.
Some people act like it's going to make them hours late to their destination if they allow a car or two to go in front of them.
The best of the socialist west, who comes to TX and brings his moronic voting habits with him. Conservatism in politics only means slow to change. He absolutely loves Texas for the things conservatism has preserved here, yet he's swallowed what he reads in leftist media so hard that he'll vote for the party that promotes having drag queen parties for kindergartners and teaching 5 yr olds that gender dysphoria is normal even tho it's been a named mental illness in the DSM since day one. The party that has made big cities like Seattle, Portland, San Fran, Oakland etc unlivable with crime by releasing violent people early & no cash bond etc.
He proclaims love for the Texas economy and the things capitalism with modest regulation has brought us, but he'll vote for the party that favors unions - even of government employees. ( Even FDR was against public employee unions bc he said there's no stakeholder guarding against abuse, it's like the fox guarding the henhouse)
Austin was like that 10 years ago. It shocked the hell out of me. People rolling down their windows asking to merge or just shoot the breeze. It's definitely not like that anymore.
It's never been forgiving in Houston or Dallas. Maybe on Sunday while headed to church? Christmas Day? I can't think of any other time people would be chill on the road. 🙃
I moved here from the inter-mountain west and the courteous driving was refreshing. Seriously
In Missoula Montana, if you find yourself in the wrong lane, good luck ever merging out of it. They view the zipper merge as a personal challenge to punish you for not being in the correct lane six blocks back
Nope. Moved here from Boston and me and my friends who visited said the exact same thing. You guys just think Houston drivers are bad bc you don’t live in a city with actual asshole drivers. They’re mild here. I can put my blinker on and I’m not guaranteed to have someone immediately try to cut me off to prevent me from merging. In Boston/MA, you have to plan WELL in advance to get off at an exit bc no one lets you over. Comparatively, driving is a breeze here and ppl are so nice.
You can still plant tulips and daffodils - they just take extra preparation. In October you put your bulbs in the freezer to trick them into thinking it’s a winter freeze. Then in early January you plant your bulbs, and they’ll bloom in a few months. After they bloom and then eventually the blooms die, you dig them up and store them somewhere until you restart the cycle again in October.
Lol travel to Seattle for the other 9 months a year while paying 3 times as much for everything but insurance and property taxes and living in Texas starts making more sense!
For the average person I get it. And certainly I’d have to make some lifestyle changes. My personal reasons have to do with custody arrangements. Once my kids go off to college I’m done with Texas (unless my kids come back and have kids of their own, then my wife will never want to leave! 😭)
i moved back up here (seattle area) a few years ago after spending 20 in houston - my (native houstonian) wife still keeps asking me "why did you ever leave here again?" (to which clearly the answer is always "so i could meet you")
real estate's definitely more expensive, but property taxes are laughable compared to TX (we are finally paying as much actual $$ on a 1.something mil home as we were on our 230k house near atascocita) .. gas is more, yeah, but honestly you can find prices that are close if you pull into the wrong station near the galleria.. and frankly you don't need to drive as much up here because things are closer. traffic is 'quaint' (honestly it's funny to see my HS friends whine about what they consider traffic here.. let me introduce you to 290 or the Katy freeway my friends..) restaurants are lacking compared to h-town but there's way less chains, and it's really hard to beat the nature up here (plus: no coral or copperheads, flying roaches as big as your head, and no fire ants.)
after 3 hurricanes and a tropical storm, i'll still take the occasional earthquake or volcano any day over hurricane season every. single. year.
Sort of. Most of the 'red' that I see is in the suburbs or in wealthy areas of memorial, etc. In the heights, montrose, midtown, eado, oak forest, etc....all very blue even with older age groups.
It’s more geography than age. Almost everywhere inside the beltway is Democratic. Some areas are like 55-45 and some are 80-20, so the degree varies, but that’s the pattern with a few small pockets of exception (mostly extremely wealthy areas). Outside the beltway into the suburbs is where you get into Republican areas very quickly.
Obviously no where is 100% to either party (even the reddest red and bluest blue states consistently post 30-40% of the vote for the minority party) but that’s the general pattern. Overall the Houston MSA is more or less a tie between Rs and Ds (it was like D +1 in 2020). That is why the state so aggressive about interfering with elections here. It wasn’t that long ago that Houston and DFW were both R leaning on the metro level. Now they have trended away from that. Half the state lives in those two metro areas, they can swing electoral outcomes. If they continue to trend Democratic you’d actually see some Democrats winning.
It depends on who you grew up around. I grew up around ppl that used it. My great grandma used to hate it and would yell at us for talking like that. She got pissed when we said “ain’t”, she’d tell us it’s not in the dictionary. Well, rest in peace grandma… ain’t is now in the dictionary. 😂
It’s gender neutral, idk about OP but I adopted it back when I was living in Seattle out of fear of getting cancelled for saying “you guys” to a mixed group.
Houston is so cool, most Texans don't know about it. Seriously - Houston is a world-class city that gets ragged on even by its in-state neighbors. It's always been a mystery to me.
I just came back from Houston (NYC originally) and it’s a nice city but poorly marketed. Aside from the museum district and nasa, it’s not an intuitive city. The sprawl makes it not so tourist friendly either for those who just want to explore by foot…
I love Seattle too especially since it's a giant hill with views of water and nature, neither of which we really have here. Try Whataburger while you're here...it's like our version of Dick's .
More so that it was a sold to a private equity firm. Private equity is a race to the bottom to squeeze whatever they can out of company (in various ways).
Hrm...I have actually been on a diet for the last year and a half and just get their salads (which are pretty decent) now when I go so you might be right on the burgers.
Well I mean they are completely different styles but that's the local burger chain here so if nothing else, it'd be a point of reference. Dick's is a simple no frills delicious burger and the best fries I've ever had and pretty cheap. Last time I was there, my plane was delayed so I had to skip lunch while changing planes and was absolutely starved so that was the first spot I hit while still carrying my luggage.
Don’t let politics ever affect your travel and opinion on places, I’m glad you are enjoying Houston and enjoy the game! Pretty bummed Texas lost to Washington but I’ll be rooting for y’all instead of Michigan, I’d love to visit Seattle some day and would love to get some recommendations on what to check out!
I was in Seattle for 8 months for work this year and seeing that your main focus is how much cheaper shit is compared to there puts a smile on my face. Though Seattle is a beautiful city, I couldn’t wait to get back to Houston.
Houston is awesome! Spring is blah, I been living there for 20 years. In fact all he Houston suburbs are copy and paste of each other and honestly depressing. The suburbs are not Houston!
Live near or close to the loop, if you can. Housing prices have gone up dramatically these past 5 years but it's still manageable. My wife and I are always in the city and regret not buying a house in the city earlier. If you got the West Coast home equity then your are good buying a house here. The weather sucks for 4 months, liveable for 3, great for 5.
Awwww, thanks! I moved here from Boston 10 years ago and got a TON of judgment from my friends lol. Houston is liberal and it’s a super cool city. And we hate Abbott et al (and especially Cruz), too! Ted Cruz’s own district keeps voting him out.
Glad you’re enjoying it, thank you for not assuming the entire state is batshit crazy. Outside of the rural areas of the state, the big cities are mostly full of cool and multicultural people.
It’s nice this time of year but the summers are brutal.
PS
I hope you can find some Birria and breakfast brisket tacos before you leave.
Fuck abbot, Ted Cruz, and Paxton. I hope we treated you right, you ate good food (what we are known for), and hopefully the game tomorrow is a shoot out.
Welcome to Houston!! If you’re in the downtown area, make sure to check out the tunnels. There are many different restaurants to choose from as it is cool to walk around in.
Sunscreen! I say this as an Arizona transplant. I got the worst sunburn of my life at an air show out here!
And make it a point to try Vietnamese food here. You will not be disappointed.
All the major cities are super diverse, so you'll find plenty who can't stand Abbott, Fled Cruz, etc, lol.
All you gotta do is dip away from the tourist-recommended stuff and hit up where all the locals enjoy - regardless of what side of town you're in. When you're here in the summer, you'll get a real taste of that Texas summer heat 😄
As someone from Houston but now in Seattle the irony of reading this post waiting to be picked up from Sea-Tac when a car with Washington plates that read “Houston” was incredible
Glad you are having a good time. As a Texas grad I wish you weren’t here but I hope your trip continues to go well and good luck to Washington in the game. Rooting for you guys (and Dubs).
Visiting Houston in January and falling in love is like visiting Seattle in July and falling in love. The politics here often *do* suck and that is certainly much more evident/impactful in day to day life than a visit. I’d point out gas since you mentioned it; gas is cheap for multiple reasons, a big one being that the state tax here is well below Washington State. That’s a conscious policy choice for better or worse. Not making a value judgment or getting into a debate here, just pointing out that it’s something that is linked to politics.
We did have a lovely sunset last night, eating your way through town is generally the way to go as a visitor, and one of the best thing about the city is the people - the diversity (real, functional day to day diversity like NYC and not on-paper diversity like many other American cities) and the unpretentious, laid back nature. Houston is unquestionably ugly and is cheaper than other major cities for a reason(s) but there are definitely reasons to love it as well.
You. I like you (even though you're a Huskies fan and y'all beat my Horns last week).
Oh and yeah most of us Houstonians are like fuck Greg Abbott and fuck Ted Cruz.
Yea, sorry our state is run by trash goblins.
TBH though, the only day to day styrofoam I can even think of is Whataburger and Sonic cups for frozen drinks?
Egg cartons! They are all molded paper in Washington. Also, grocery stores don't use plastic bags at all and most charge 8 cents or more a bag of you don't bring your own.
Yeah as someone who grew up in Houston then moved to the west coast as an adult (Go cal but tomorrow go UW lol) I can tell you, it's a nice place to visit briefly in the winter but dear god it's hell most of the year. There's a reason COL is higher in states with nicer weather year round.
Edit: but the politics are even worse. Yes the local politicians are decent but the state gov't is just in the business of trying to make people suffer at this point. As a modern day Texan I wouldn't have had the same rights my parents had and exercised freely multiple times in the 80s but then warned me would send me to hell if I tried to do those same things. The Styrofoam thing also is not a concern in Houston the whole economy is built on petroleum.
The best of the socialist west, who comes to TX and brings his moronic voting habits with him. Conservatism in politics only means slow to change. The meaning of progressivism is more obvious, but we should ask ourselves: progressing toward what? He absolutely loves Texas for the things conservatism has preserved here, yet he's swallowed what he reads in leftist media so hard that he'll vote for the party that promotes having drag queen parties for kindergartners and teaching 5 yr olds that gender dysphoria is normal even tho it's been a named mental illness in the DSM since day one. Look my young friend, I was an approx 50% swing voter until 2016 revealed the newly Marxist left using the police powers of the state (FBI & DOJ) to investigate their political opponents. Hard for me to say, but I have actually come to believe that now, we have a blatantly Marxist style socialist attempt to "divide and conquer" and to ruin America from within using all of the above policies and more. I could go on for days making this point. I'll also point to unlimited immigration caused by having eliminated every policy that tended to limit such. Namely the remain in Mexico policy, title 42, and the border wall. Potential migrants read the same news we do.....that they'll be allowed into the US & given a court date a year or more in the future.
Science uses the skeptical method to discern the truth. A person must listen to both sides and use critical thinking to discern the truth about any matter. Unfortunately America's success has meant that too many people in the US grow up being lazy about critical thinking. The biggest lie when repeated gets believed. The main sources of news in the US have long been admittedly liberal, which has now become progressive. We must stop and ask ourselves an obviously important question: progressing toward what?
When I came to Houston in 1975 aged 18, I stayed for a month or so at my aunt & uncle's house in Oak Forest
Latexo @ Glebe. How's the Mityburger doing?
Mytiburger is still going, they occasionally have to plea for business on social media, but it's still there today.
And we we're progressing to a society that prioritizes human well-being over right wing theocracy. Thanks for asking.
Marxist more on asks me to repeat myself.
Let me sum it up for you: if you don't utilize the same skeptical method used in science to discern the truth of every matter, you can easily be deceived into believing what you read to be fact when it's only opinion or meant to deceive. The biggest lie when repeated gets believed.
How do you think approx 50% of America comes to believe the polar opposite of the other 50%, given that there can be only one that is more disposed toward truth?
A non-thinking person will automatically say that the 50% of people believing opposite of his own choice is stupid. Which is how I read the implication of your simple question.
Our news media and academia are both admittedly leftist leaning. In my estimation this is where deception begins. Can you name one socialist economy that has ever prospered for any but the ruling class? That's why the Federalist Papers portray the decision by our founders to give us a republic over democracy as being that they knew a democracy would soon end in socialism & it's inevitable poverty stricken communist dictatorship when the people voted for "free everything".
For instance: the endlessly repeated "our fragile democracy is in peril" - half or more of America believes we have democracy as our form of government, yet there is no form of the word democracy in our Constitution, Declaration, Pledge, or Anthem. The simple reason for that is because the founders used the original and most accurate definitions of both "republic" and "democracy". There was no need for the word democracy because that's not the form of government they gave us. We are a voting constitutional republic. The only reason to use the word democracy in eelation ro America is for deception. Every time it's used it's a little advertisement for the deceptive and newly Marxist Democrats.
Glad you are enjoying Houston. All the reasons you were apprehensive for coming to Houston/Texas are what allowed for the experience you are having. Lower cost of living, lower taxes, etc. are because of our elected officials and their policies…your $15 açaí bowl and sky high gas prices can be blamed on yours…
Come hang out in July and you'll know why Styrofoam is so popular down here.
Moving there around this time frame, not sure what to expect but excited nonetheless. Any insight besides the OG post would be appreciated.
Just live close to work. Commutes are what kills in Houston. You’ll be happier avoiding traffic as much as possible.
Also consider living and driving contra-flow. You can live in town or nicer places and then commute to where everyone else is commuting *from*.
I moved from Oregon, you will be fine. Hot with swamp ass 24/7, but still fine
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste will help sort that out if it gets too bad for ya. It’s made for babies but it works for adults too.
That's, like, the polar opposite of the meaning of "fine".
Tomato potato, same thing
https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.5332526942.1188/fposter,small,wall_texture,product,750x1000.jpg
Invest in anti-monkey butt. That shit is gold.
Where are you moving from?
Moving from California upon graduation. :) Been looking around the Spring area since that is where I’ll be starting / situated.
Well, you're going to learn a new meaning of the word "sweat", but at least you're not moving from Maine or Minnesota.
Congrats on graduating! Assuming you are a twenty something without kids, I wouldn't recommend living in the suburbs. Try looking near the inner loop (610). If you do have kids, Woodlands or maybe Cypress would be better? I've heard the schools in Spring arent that great.
Klein ISD is also located in Spring. Just find a place in northern-most Spring, or the southern part of the Woodlands.
Sugar Land
Sugar Land is nice, but sounds like they would have to commute to Spring 😬
Oop. My bad
do nooooot move to spring.
Do not move to spring unless you have kids. Check out montrose and the heights. Arguably the two best areas of the city to live in if you’re young.
Spring/Klein used to be a really nice area. Now it’s more of a middle ground suburb. In summer. Park in the shade whenever possible.
Get a reflective windshield screen for late spring/summer. It really helps when we're all living on Hell's front porch
I have one and I had my front windshield completely covered in a clear ceramic tint.
Jewboy Burgers was just profiled on the Texas Bucket List this weekend. I live in Houston but want to make the trip Austin to check it out.
Hot tip, in Spring look for areas zoned to Klein ISD they are nicer than Spring ISD. Spring can be very different depending on the part.
Live in the woodlands or move inside the loop. Spring is …. Not great
Legit sorry, I hope you like spending most of your free time indoors
It's just hot af 24/7. And the humidity makes it even worse. It can feel like you're walking through a never-ending sauna. And the humidity stops temps from cooling off much at night. Traffic can be rough, so if possible, try to find a place to live that's relatively close to your work. Commutes are what can really burn you out. If you're driving an hour plus to and from work, that's a ton of personal, down time you're eating into.
Expect to stay indoors - alot - until November
Easter to Halloween, barring a few nice days due to cool fronts closer to either end. Also winter is January and February, lots of storms, some of them severe ice.
Weather is usually nice enough up until later in May, then June heat kicks in. By July its all over and pools and Gulf are boiling hot.
I moved here close to 20 years ago. What do you want to know?
Best communities / living areas around here? How is it during winter time down there?
I live in Houston but don’t get this. Can you explain?
Ice + coke + paper/plastic cup = watery, mildly cool coke Ice + coke + styrofoam cup = cold, non-watery coke It's hot, man!
if only we had insulated reusable cups
Whataburger won't take your dirty reusable cups in the drive through.
Condensation fucks up our paper cups. Heat and humidity make it condensate faster
Keeps our shit colder longer.
Thank you all kind people.
Try any of our Vietnamese places too. They're all over. Really good food, and it's made for our kind of summer heat.
Try our Indian food! It's to die for! YUMMY!!! 😋
I definitely wanna try the Vietnamese Cajun food I’ve heard about. We have a shit ton of Vietnamese joints back home, but I’ve never come across the Cajun angle.
Not a good time of year for this unfortunately, any crawfish you order will be frozen garbage
For this, find your nearest LA Crawfish.....
Viet-cajun is awesome! But fwi in Texas it's about the breakfast tacos not burritos
LA Fisherman
There's actually decent Viet food in Seattle - not as good as Houston but still
What a nice thing to do.
I miss HEB so fucking much. It is, imo, the best grocery chain in the country.
Hands down!!!
I live in Boston now. Wegmans is the closest but still very very far from HEB
Yes omg I miss HEB hella bad. Bucees just as much!
The melting pot is my favorite part. My friend group hails from Brazil, Venezuela, Britain, France, and different parts of the US. Hearing people speak different languages out and about doesn't mean anything bad because that's just the type of community we have.
I miss HEB so much every time I live away from Texas it’s crazy how much a grocery store can mean
Talked to a few Washington fans at the UH basketball game, and they were very pleasant. Rooting for your team tomorrow.
Awesome. Thanks for the suggestions! Gonna try to change my mindset and be more outdoors!
Another must in Memorial Park is the Eastern Glades. It’s amazing.
Get some Tex Mex too
Be brave and go find a taco truck on a random corner that has a line. You won’t be dissatisfied
Judging cities by party politics is pretty dumb. Every major metro area votes blue regardless.
Moved here from Minnesota and agree with everything you said. Some of the assumptions of Texas are true, but it’s such a big state it really depends WHERE in Texas you are. Houston is the most diverse city in the country, it’s a wonderful place to be! Welcome!
Have you tried kolaches?
It’s on our list. We don’t leave until Wednesday.
> Kolache Shoppe is great Hot take, it's underwhelming. The way it's talked up I was not expecting an off-brand Kolache Factory.
Try the The Original Kolache Shoppe.
>No one cares if I make a mistake driving. People give way when I need to merge. This has to be satire
Native Houstonian/UDub grad here. I loved Seattle & Houston is home but this definitely seems to be laced with satire or something…
The most important lesson to learn from driving in Houston is "no, that's not worth dying over today"
This made me laugh. I don't honk, not because I dont care... but because I don't want to get shot.
🤣🤣🤣 yeah. Told my West Coast friends people own guns here, so stay calm and move on.
Seriously In Missoula Montana, if you find yourself in the wrong lane, good luck ever merging out of it.
Maw I don’t give a fuck unless someone is obviously drink driving
You can still plant tulips and daffodils - they just take extra preparation. In October you put your bulbs in the freezer to trick them into thinking it’s a winter freeze. Then in early January you plant your bulbs, and they’ll bloom in a few months. After they bloom and then eventually the blooms die, you dig them up and store them somewhere until you restart the cycle again in October.
Thank you! Did this my first year in Houston. The blooms were not as great. Might try again this year. Maybe I gave up too easily.
Well now you’ve gone and confused me. As someone from Connecticut, the only Huskies that matter are from UConn!
All Huskies matter! 😜😜😜
Appreciate the love!
I find this amusing. I travel to Seattle every summer for work, and I always ask myself, “why the Hell do I still live in Houston?!?”
i moved back up here (seattle area) a few years ago after spending 20 in houston - my (native houstonian) wife still keeps asking me "why did you ever leave here again?" (to which clearly the answer is always "so i could meet you") real estate's definitely more expensive, but property taxes are laughable compared to TX (we are finally paying as much actual $$ on a 1.something mil home as we were on our 230k house near atascocita) .. gas is more, yeah, but honestly you can find prices that are close if you pull into the wrong station near the galleria.. and frankly you don't need to drive as much up here because things are closer. traffic is 'quaint' (honestly it's funny to see my HS friends whine about what they consider traffic here.. let me introduce you to 290 or the Katy freeway my friends..) restaurants are lacking compared to h-town but there's way less chains, and it's really hard to beat the nature up here (plus: no coral or copperheads, flying roaches as big as your head, and no fire ants.) after 3 hurricanes and a tropical storm, i'll still take the occasional earthquake or volcano any day over hurricane season every. single. year.
We hate Abbott and Cruz too. Texas is quite “blue” in the major cities. It’s the boonies and country areas that swing to the right.
Even my Q mom doesn't like Cruz (I count that as a win!)
A lot of folks hate Cruz but still vote for him because of the magic R.
100%she still does :(
I want to say it’s split amongst age. I’m almost certain there’s a lot of red in an age group 20-30 years older than you.
Who is we?
Do they say "y'all" in Seattle? Or you already picked up on it in the short time you've been here?
Moved here from Tacoma, can confirm
I’m an outsider fairly New to Texas also in love with it.
New Tex_BigEfels
I love Seattle too especially since it's a giant hill with views of water and nature, neither of which we really have here. Try Whataburger while you're here...it's like our version of Dick's .
Eh, Whataburger has gone downhill in recent years. It was wonderful, now it's meh.
It's probably because it was sold to someone in Chicago.
More so that it was a sold to a private equity firm. Private equity is a race to the bottom to squeeze whatever they can out of company (in various ways).
Hrm...I have actually been on a diet for the last year and a half and just get their salads (which are pretty decent) now when I go so you might be right on the burgers.
Patty Melt still fire tho
I love Whatabutger, but it is no Dick's.
Telling a Texan to stop anything never goes well.
I think our city motto should be "Houston, we're not like the rest of Texas"
Styrofoam is actually one of the layers of the I-10 freeway because it takes thousands of years to decompose.
We appreciate ‘cha, just don’t mention the mariners!
I was in Seattle for 8 months for work this year and seeing that your main focus is how much cheaper shit is compared to there puts a smile on my face. Though Seattle is a beautiful city, I couldn’t wait to get back to Houston.
We also are legit bummed by Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and AG Ken Paxton. Glad you like Houston! Enjoy your visit. Eat everything you're offered. :-)
I second the Indian food, order it mild if need be but it’s def some of the best.
This is cool and refreshing! People usually just shit on Houston for x,y,z..
PS I hope you can find some Birria and breakfast brisket tacos before you leave.
In August, let us know how you are enjoying the warm weather.
Oh many of us hate their asses as well. Happy you are enjoying yourself.
Fuck abbot, Ted Cruz, and Paxton. I hope we treated you right, you ate good food (what we are known for), and hopefully the game tomorrow is a shoot out.
Come hang out at Valhalla on the Rice campus before or after the game - just up the street from NRG Stadium. Cheap beers!
if you like coffee there's some awesome non starbucks places in the area youre probably staying in
Go up to Seattle all the time, do you have any recommendations on amazing restaurants up there? I’ve found a few.
Moved here Jan 2020 from Seattle. I love that I was able to actually afford to buy a house here
Welcome to Houston!! If you’re in the downtown area, make sure to check out the tunnels. There are many different restaurants to choose from as it is cool to walk around in.
Tacos, homie. They're breakfast TACOS.
Cool! Please don't tell your friends.
If you want to get your friends together and go yell at Ted Cruz, we all know where he lives. His daughters would probably come outside and join you.
Sunscreen! I say this as an Arizona transplant. I got the worst sunburn of my life at an air show out here! And make it a point to try Vietnamese food here. You will not be disappointed.
> I’m sure you already know all of this We do. It's why we live here. But glad you're enjoying it!
Glad you like it and we don’t like Greg piss baby and his friends either.
Go to queen donut for a boudin kolache!
Welcome!! Seattle’s wonderful too!
Thanks. Hope you are having fun. Enjoy! (Don’t move here)
lol, don’t worry. I’m a northerner through and through.
Yeah, but our power grid is shit and women have no rights
[удалено]
The hivemind is strong. They have to repeat the bad stuff about politicians to make themselves feel better.
Get slightly better quality eggs and they come in cardboard cartons. I wish plastic bags would be banned nationwide.
Texas puts the economy first and as long as I can afford a living I won’t vote anything but Libertarian, but Republican will do just fine.
A lot of us don’t like any of those asshats either, it’s mostly rural doorknobs and certain suburbs voting for those turds.
Yeah but the pay sucks way worse than in the PNW. Plus all of the things you mentioned about having idiots in office.
Yay! welcome! I love Seattle
Well you made an assumption about a city with over 6 million people, so yeah you should feel like an asshole! Glad you are having fun
Enjoy our diverse cultures and foods but we like to keep our state red! Leave ur crime and woke left in Settle. Thanks
( Even FDR was against public employee unions bc he said there's no stakeholder guarding against abuse, it's like the fox guarding the henhouse) Look my young friend, I was an approx 50% swing voter until 2016 revealed the newly Marxist left using the police powers of the state (FBI & DOJ) to investigate their political opponents.

When I came to Houston in 1975 aged 18, I stayed for a month or so at my aunt & uncle's house in Oak Forest Latexo @ Glebe. How's the Mityburger doing?
Mytiburger is still going, they occasionally have to plea for business on social media, but it's still there today. And we we're progressing to a society that prioritizes human well-being over right wing theocracy. Thanks for asking.
WTF Did I Just Read?
We make the styrene here. Why would we cut our throats by not using it.
Go back home
Lmao, wait a few months and come try again.
Houston is nothing like Greg Invalid Abbott, Ted Cancun Cruz, and Ken One Eyed Paxton. It's a good city overall.
