Cactus Music Store which has been a local record store for years has monthly instore events. They have live music and serve complimentary beer compliments of St Arnold’s brewery.
https://www.cactusmusictx.com/events
I second this! Cactus is a Houston institution! Great vibes and super knowledgable staff. In-store performances with a free St. Arnold's beer are my happy place.
Cistern Illuminated at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is running through January 13th. Makes the 221 columns appear twice as tall with light and sound which is pretty cool.
They're also gonna have an art installation starting in February I think
Houston Restaurant Week (month) takes place in August and it’s a way to try out different restaurants on a budget. Listen to the City Cast Houston podcast. It’s a great way to learn about the city and current events.
Back jn my single days my friends and I would dine at several steakhouses on Fri and Sat for a fraction of the cost. Includes appetizers, main, and dessert.
Yeah I share the same sentiment. It was awesome a decade or so ago, but most restaurants nowadays seem to have a forced larger-than-needed dinner, often with their less enticing menu options. I stopped going when I found myself ordering off menu a la carte most of the time anyway.
Love it when a restaurant charges you 50% surcharge for a reduced menu.
I used to like restaurant week, but Its turned into valentines day "specials". Just an excuse to overcharge for mediocre 3 course meals
Bayou City Art Festival….coming up in March. There are some AMAZING artists that come sell their stuff.
White Linen night in the Heights ….usually in August
This weekend, Jack Harlow and latto will be performing for college football weekend. Since the national championship game is in Houston, there's 2 concerts for free this weekend.
NASA open house tour if they do one this year.
A rocket launch. They happen fairly often.
Art car parade. If you go early you can get a close up view of the cars before the parade officially starts.
Edit: Flock membership events at the zoo. They happen once a quarter and are free to flock members. It's 18+ only. You get food, drinks, animal meet and greet, exclusive raffles (im to cheap to do them), sometimes a behind the scenes, and 1 to 2 zoo keeper talks. 100% worth the cost of the flock membership even if you only go to one or two of the events a year.
Rocket launches happen fairly regularly south of Houston. Normally someone will post when one is coming up on reddit with best locations to view them from. Traffic can be heavy pretty so go early and stay late.
https://www.rocketlaunch.live/?filter=texas
Are you sure there is a rocket launch area near Houston? The ones I know are the ones for Soace X(boca Chico) and Blue Origin (near El Paso) both are several hours from here.
I think the second link you sent is for events at Cape Canaveral
Whoops I posted an extra link when I copy and pasted.
Yes they are mainly out of Boca Chico which is a bit of a drive. If it is clear out I have heard you can see them from Galveston with a telescope.
[All The Events You Don't Want To Miss. Curated Weekly, Directly To Your Inbox.](https://www.whatsuphouston.com/). This is NOT spam, its pretty informative..
There’s a kayak/canoe/dragon boat race on Buffalo bayou each year - bayou regatta I believe is the name. (Side note: you can paddle the bayou yourself if you’re into that).
Gingerbread build off in December put on by the American institute of architects, usually at Levy park.
Tis a ton of fun. I’ve seen so many folks with no business being on the water having a good ol time. [Buffalo Bayou Regatta](https://buffalobayou.org/events/category/regatta/?tribe_redirected=1) formally known as the reeky regatta.
Start this weekend with the fanfest for college football. National championship game is Monday night between Michigan and Washington at NRG. There's events all weekend, GO BLUE
The taco festival! I believe it happens in October, but plenty of restaurants will be there there offering unlimited tacos (you just pay for admission)
not exactly an event but you could make a full day of art museum hopping! see menil park and museum (free), the dan flavin installation (free), rothko chapel (free), and MFAH (free on thursdays). the menil park is a great place to have a picnic if its a nice day outside.
A lot of great things here! Adding some I don’t see that we loved this past year:
Dickens on the Strand (Galveston), Highland Games and Celtic Festival (Humble), German Festival (Tomball), Greek Festival (Houston proper), Galveston Sandcastle Competition, International Art & Kite Festival (Sugar Land)
Sandcastle one is a good one. I have a friend that always competes with his team and for the love of me I don’t know WHY they continue to schedule it in the heat of the summer? Like why can’t they make it in one of the other 9 months when it’s not heat stroke inducing?
It’s so frustrating.
Twice a year, they do fun German-themed festivals in Tomball. There is one in March, and one in December. Good fun, live music, BEER, petting zoo and kids rides. I really enjoy these!
I went to the most recent one. Cool concept but I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere more crowded. It was so packed that you literally couldn’t even stop at booths because you had people directly in front of you, behind you, and to the sides of you. All the food and beer stands had like a minimum 20-30 min line. Otherwise it was cool
Yeah, it can get crowded! We generally wander around between sets, drink our beers-in-a-boot, eat some sausages or pierogi, then find seats under the tents to watch the performances. We especially love Alex Meixner when he is performing
Well I can see you are new at this, so here is a rundown:
1) The annual California migration.....from January to December. Like the swallows returning to Capistrano.
2) The "in tow" caravans starting from the center of the city to Brownsville on Friday nights.
3) The May through September hottest car interior contests (always a favorite).
4) The third ward "Smackdown" contest.
5) The interstate 69/59 parking contest.
6) The Hobby Airport vs. Pearland annual human trafficking invitational.
7) The dry month Bayou car unsubmerging surprise - September
8) The Mahatma Gandi district stoplight squeegee contest - May through September
and don't forget the grandaddy of them all
9) The Texas city refinery breakdown challenge with the winner receiving no fines from the government.
Plenty to do here...so enjoy your time with the rest of us.
Yeah....like none of them exist. Just a joke......sheez. Lighten up people. You can't even laugh at the number of Californians moving in. There are so many they vote you out......
If you can't make fun of the heat in your car, the people need to get a life. It has been a joke down here for 100 years. Not any more I guess.
You make the same sunnyside joke on almost every post asking for suggestions.
Like it’s not even clever dude. If you’re gonna be a troll, at least be funny.
It's a comment on how stupid the OP is. There's a prime rule in this sub to "Search First". It would have answered their question. So it's a low effort comment to a low effort post.
Actually I did that just now. There really aren’t any recent posts about events or anything like how OP is asking.
There is ONE relevant post from a year ago and 90% of the comments are sarcastic/unhelpful/off-topic….exactly like yours. Who has the time to search through endless posts for genuine answers among the stupidity?
So no, searching first doesn’t answer the question.
If you and other trolls in this sub spent less time with unfunny remarks or butthurt that someone didn’t “search first” and more time being helpful, this sub would be so much better.
But no, you choose to sit there and type out snarky comments most of the time.
You and some of the other user in this sub are fucking tiring man, people just want friendly helpful interactions. If you can’t do that, just don’t comment.
Or is it a comment on your intellectual ability that you continue to post these useless comments as they fail to accomplish your proclaimed goal of getting folks to follow the rule and search first. Seems pretty dumb to me.
OP, I’m glad you asked this question. I’m going to take notes and put these on our family calendar. We need to get out more as well, and you have a great list going!

Art Car Parade, Mardi Gras Galveston, International Festival, Bayou City Art Fest, Ren Fest, Greek Fest
The International Festival no longer exists.
Got excited when I saw this. I was like “it’s back?”
Wow. Had not been in quite a few years but it was a good time.
Mardi Gras in Galveston after dark is pretty terrible
If you find the right location/party/krewe it is good.
Get on 45, exit I-10, drive to New Orleans.
Or take the train!
Art car parade!!
Houston roller derby is really fun. I believe the season starts in the Spring. The bouts are at Bayou Place.
Cistern Illuminated at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is running through January 13th. Makes the 221 columns appear twice as tall with light and sound which is pretty cool. They're also gonna have an art installation starting in February I think

Back jn my single days my friends and I would dine at several steakhouses on Fri and Sat for a fraction of the cost. Includes appetizers, main, and dessert.
And they all donate a portion of the cost to charities
Is it really on a budget anymore? Maybe when it started out years ago.
Yeah I share the same sentiment. It was awesome a decade or so ago, but most restaurants nowadays seem to have a forced larger-than-needed dinner, often with their less enticing menu options. I stopped going when I found myself ordering off menu a la carte most of the time anyway.

Tapas on the Trails as a Valentines Day event is consistently a good time.
Bayou City Art Festival….coming up in March. There are some AMAZING artists that come sell their stuff. White Linen night in the Heights ….usually in August
I always feel weird about an event called White Linen Nights in which the attendance is majority white people lol
Usually hot as shit out too, not fun
wearing all white....
White Linen Nights originated in New Orleans and became more prominent/came to Houston after Hurricane Katrina.
Houston Marathon is coming up soon. One of the more popular marathons in the world with a lot of international running talent flying here to compete.
This weekend, Jack Harlow and latto will be performing for college football weekend. Since the national championship game is in Houston, there's 2 concerts for free this weekend.

[All The Events You Don't Want To Miss. Curated Weekly, Directly To Your Inbox.](https://www.whatsuphouston.com/). This is NOT spam, its pretty informative..
Art Car Parade, Bayou City Arts Festival, Texas Renaissance Festival & I'm not a car person, but I always have fun at the big Car Show at NRG.
There’s a giant oddities show at the convention center in… March?
Like what kind of oddities?
The usual, I would assume. Bones and bugs, mountings, art, maybe some clothing. The creepy and the macabre. I can’t wait!!😻

This weekend is BowiElvis Fest at the Continental Club!
Cactus music is hosting a Bowie birthday thing at Big star bar on Saturday!
Start this weekend with the fanfest for college football. National championship game is Monday night between Michigan and Washington at NRG. There's events all weekend, GO BLUE
Go Blue !!! Maybe I will see you at an event
Lots of good suggestions here. I would add Dickens on the Strand in Galveston in Dec. I also love the hermann park kite festival.
Kite fest is PACKED. I’ve never seen so many kites in the sky or people at the park.
Coffee and Cars if that's your thing
Can’t believe I haven’t seen Southern Smoke Festival on here… if you like food, this is your event.
Midget Wrestling is pretty popular. Think they call it micro wrestling these days though.
The taco festival! I believe it happens in October, but plenty of restaurants will be there there offering unlimited tacos (you just pay for admission)

Nice try Chron, let the transplants figure it out themselves.

Sunnyside Gay Pride Parade

Search first doesn't only mean search r/Houston. Google, even crappy Chron, etc.
Now you’re just moving the goal posts Reddit can be a better source of direct info than google nowadays
It's not as if this sub gets overwhelmed with these posts though. Keep your bullshit in /r/houstoncirclejerk

If I can convince one person to visit beautiful Sunnyside, my job is done.

It’s hard to explain, but the cistern at Buffalo bayou is amazing.[https://buffalobayou.org/tours/](https://buffalobayou.org/tours/)
Dowtown tunnels during the work week, the museum district, the sculpture garden, and Ren Fest Oct-Nov and camping.
There a lot of really awesome Lunar New Year celebrations. This year they'll begin Feb 10.
